What is the AIM?The Accelerative Integrated Methodology (AIM) is being used in!thousands of schools around the world and has been referred to as a revolution for second language teaching and learning!AIM is a unique, multi-faceted program in that it uses gestures, a specifically researched ‘pared down’ language, stories and musicto rapidly develop students’ fluency.!

Conference Programme:The AIM conference begins socially with champagne on Sundayevening from 5:30pm at QPO (186 High Street, Kew) after over-seas/interstate attendees have settled in. The conference hasextensive programming from 9am until 5pm each day and you willbe able to pick the workshops which suit you, your teaching andyour interests. We will be running specific workshops for thePrimary, Upper primary and Secondary levels as well as interestingworkshops on AIM related topics. A conference dinner ($30 perhead) will be held on Mon. 19th at Saychol (Thai) (229 Highstreet, Kew) for all interested attendees. And finally, the confer-ence will conclude with cheese, wine and a chance to debrief at5pm on Tuesday!

KEYNOTE SPEAKER:Jenny McKinney Melbourne Jenny is a practising AIMteacher, currently at CareyBaptist Grammar School inKew. She is the Director ofHearsay Language LearningDownunder and is the HeadPresenter for AIM LanguageLearning in Australasia.

Jenny has 18 years experienceteaching French, German and

Japanese, from Prep. to Year 12 and is part of a team of teacherswho are pioneering the AIM Program in Mandarin.

Jenny runs workshops around Australia, New Zealand and Asiawhich not only provide teachers with an insight in to the AIMProgram, but also show how the program unfolds to include all thegrammar refinements (written and oral) necessary for languagecompetency.

Richard SmithOttawa, CanadaRichard has been teachingFrench for the Ottawa-Carleton District School boardsince 1999. He establishedhimself as an energetic teacherprepared to employ innovativemethods of instruction whichhe did in 2004. He discovered

the Accelerative IntegratedMethodology and has never looked back. From kindergarten toGrade 8, success was immediate with his students. Motivating,challenging and inspiring young minds became a fun and engag-ing experience for all.

Richard also has expertise in Balanced Literacy in the AIM class-room and getting the most out of your student’s written work.Since 2005, Richard has been giving AIM workshops acrossCanada, Europe and Australia. In June 2009, Richard was hired byhis school board as a full-time French Instructional Coach. He isnow back in the classroom teaching grade 7 & 8 students atGlashan Public School in Ottawa. Drawing on many years of expe-rience with AIM, Richard’s passion pushes him to continue advis-ing and coaching teachers on ways to achieve the same success.

Debbie Summers, SydneyDebbie has worked as an AIM teacherfor the past four years in a Sydney pri-mary school and has been a presenterat the 2008, 2009 and 2010 NationalAIM conferences in Melbourne.

Her teaching career includes workingas an A level French Examiner( HSC equivalent) in the UK and 10years as a French and German

teacher from prep to year 12 in NSW.She has lived for long periods of time in both France and

Germany and has a post-graduate diploma in TESOL.!

Debbie has a very hands on approach to teaching, and her enthu-siasm is positively contagious. Debbie states that one of her pro-fessional aims is to inspire children to love languages as much asshe does. Adopting the AIM teaching method has allowed her tosee a marked improvement in engagement, discipline and enjoy-ment amongst her pupils.!Debbie’s expertise with the early yearsis not to be missed!

Debbie has also introduced the first Parents' AIM French Class inAustralia which has been highly successful.

OUR PRESENTERS:

Edite SammonsOntario, CanadaEdite has taught coreFrench since 1980 in boththe public and independ-ent school systems inOntario. In 1999, afterobserving AIM creatorWendy Maxwell’s coreFrench classes, Editebecame the first teacher topilot the AIM in her grade

one core French classes. Edite was subsequently awarded the Havergal Chair for TeachingInnovation, allowing her to travel to British Columbia to continuetraining alongside Wendy Maxwell.

For several years now, Edite has been an AIM presenter, consult-ant, and writer, as well as a full time French teacher. Edite hasgiven AIM training workshops to thousands of language teachersacross North America and Holland.

As of June 2011, Edite is retiring from teaching French, and willtake on the role of Curriculum Services Consultant with AIMLanguage Learning for Spanish.

Sharon Rong, MelbourneSharon was introduced to gesture-based approaches in 2010 and iscurrently working with a team ofeducators at Carey, developing andteaching the AIM for Mandarin.Prior to this role, Sharon taughtChinese at Doncaster PrimarySchool for 13 years. She has been

a Leader for the Chinese Teacher’sNetwork (Primary) at EMR (East Metropolitan Region, DEECD).Sharon has shared her experiences and expertise by giving presen-tations at EMR workshops and hosting many network meetings.Her professional qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts, GraduateDiploma of American Studies (Beijing Foreign Studies University)and a Diploma of Education from the University of Newcastle,NSW.

Wendy Zhang, MelbourneWendy is a also one of the team ofeducators at Carey, developing andteaching the AIM for Mandarin andhas been responsible for developingmuch of the curriculum materials todate. Wendy was trialling AIM materi-

als at Melbourne Grammar School in2010 and her professional qualifications include a BachelorDegree of Bioscience (Tianjin Normal University) and a Master of

Teaching (Primary) from La TrobeUniversity.

Margaret Fuary, MelbourneMargaret is Head of Chinese atGrimwade House, MelbourneGrammar, where she has taughtsince 1991. In recent years she hasexperimented with the AIM withamazing results and has undertakenresearch into Bilingual Immersionprograms. She has presented at the

last three annual Australian ChineseLanguage Teachers’ Conferences on the above subjects; and in2010, presented at the Melbourne AIM conference. Her publica-tions include a workbook, “Hao Ji Le” designed to complementthe computer program “Tai Hao Le” and “Lai Wan Youxi”.Currently, she is involved in developing a P-6 Curriculum Mapwith a team of teachers from four schools, a project funded bythe Becoming Asia Literate Grant in Schools program.
