WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 2011–12
2 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 2011–12
Our graduates include 26 Rhodes Scholars, 40 Watson Fellows, 27 NCAA Postgraduate Scholars and numerous doctors, business people, government leaders, professors, artists, and teachers. We’re not shy to say that our campus is one of the most beautiful places you’ve ever seen. Its 13,000 forested acres are crisscrossed by 65 miles of trails, streams, waterfalls, and great views to discover and enjoy. While the Sewanee community provides a myriad of educational and recreational opportunities due to its elegant natural surroundings, the University is more than just another pretty campus. It’s a natural treasure right at our doorstep where learning and real world solutions intersect. The hallmark of a Sewanee education is challenging academics paired with close faculty-student relationships. One hundred percent of Sewanee classes are taught by professors — a faculty which includes Guggenheim and Fulbright Fellows and Rhodes Scholars — and 100 percent of Sewanee faculty members also serve as student advisors. At Sewanee, learning is exploration. Students are encouraged to think for themselves, with interested professors who are experts in their fields as their guides. Sewanee is the Mountain, and the Mountain is us — a place for adventures of the mind, body, and spirit.
The cornerstone of everything we do is the Honor Code — our pledge to lead a life of integrity and truthfulness. All incoming students sign their names to the code and all students sign their name and write “pledged’’ on all classroom work. Sewanee is a nationally-recognized liberal arts college. According to the National Survey of Student Engagement, Sewanee is one of the nation’s top performing colleges in terms of student engagement. Students who spend four years on the Mountain find it a place to challenge ideas, build lasting relationships, and feel safe and welcomed into a caring community.

SEASON OUTLOOK 2011–12
With the return of five experienced seniors and the addition of eight first-year players to the team, the Sewanee Tigers enter the 2011-12 basketball sea-son with high hopes, hoping to bounce back from a disappointing injury-filled season that saw the overall record slip to 2-23. After an exciting 100-94 win over Covenant College in the opening game of the 2010-11 season, the Tigers were able to add only one more to the win column during the remainder of the season.
Fielding the largest team ever during his nine-year tenure at Sewanee with 18 players on the roster, Coach Dickie McCarthy will once again turn to the fast-paced, high-pressure Grinnell system to challenge the always tough SCAC schedule. Relying on a full-court pressure defense, the three-point field goal and rapid, multiple substitutions which characterizes the Grinnell system, the Tigers will attempt to wear down their opponents.
Seniors Claire Elliott, Alex Ginsburg, Dani Kabbes, Logan Miller, and Virginia Zakas all return making this one of the most experienced teams in Sewanee women’s basketball history. “These five young ladies have stuck with this basketball program through some very tough times over the past three seasons. I am tremendously proud of their persistence. We are so fortunate to have them around to set a great example for the younger players,” said Coach McCarthy.
Adding to the excitement of Sewanee’s high-intensity style of play will be junior Dana Middleton at point guard. Middleton, a mid-season transfer from Division II Belmont Abbey College at semester break in 2010-11, was able to lead the team in scoring average (13.5 points/game) after joining the team in January. Middleton will share the point guard duties with senior Claire Elliott, an All-SCAC honorable mention selection last season, and junior Heather Baier. Freshman Jamie Samociuk will also see action at point guard
Senior Logan Miller and sophomore Paige Lowe will be relied on for their outstanding three-point shooting ability at the right wing position in the Tigers’ fast break offense. Freshman McKenzie Jones will also see a lot court time at the “2” spot.
Defensive specialists, senior Virginia Zakas and junior Dee Bradford, will play the left wing, the position that sets the tone for Sewanee’s relentless full-court pressure. Freshmen Devon Gunn and Emily Culbertson will be counted on to provide depth there.
Senior Alex Ginsburg, sophomore Clarissa Medley and first-year players Michelle Howell and Miracle Woods will share time at a forward position. Ginsburg, one of the Tigers’ most versatile players, has been called on to play every position on the floor during her four-year career at Sewanee.
The post position should be one of Sewanee’s strong suits during the 2011-12 season. The return of four-year starter and former All-SCAC performer Dani Kabbes and the addition of freshmen Alex Friedl and Kayla Sewell will make up a strong corps of inside players. Kabbes, recovering from off-season ankle surgery, hopes to return to her early 2010-11 form, which saw her score 35 points, only two points shy of the school record, and pull down 16 rebounds against Covenant College.
After opening season games that feature matchups with traditional rivals Emory University and Agnes Scott College, the Tigers jump quickly into their always tough SCAC schedule with an early December game at in-state rival Rhodes College in Memphis. As the rotating SCAC schedule turns against them, Sewanee will face nine conference road games and only seven at home.

SOCIAL LIFEThe picturesque Sewanee campus of 13,000 acres at an altitude of nearly 2,000 feet on the Cumberland Plateau experiences the radiant beauty of every season.
Complemented by this inspiring backdrop, Sewanee students can avail themselves of a wide spectrum of social and cultural activities.
Student choices include intramurals and varsity sports, fraternities and sororities, the Sewanee Outing Program, Chaplaincy Outreach Program, Habitat for Humanity, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Volunteer Fire Department, and Emergency Medical Service.
Live music venues, performing arts events, and student-run production companies offer contemporary plays and musicals.
The world is a little more real here, and the perspectives you can gain are limitless.
TEAM UNITYThe team spends time each year on community service projects, participates in an annual free children’s basketball clinic, and gives organized support to other Sewanee athletic teams. Our players are involved in extracurricular activities on campus.
ACADEMICSSewanee student-athletes are here to earn a nationally-recognized and re-spected education. Team members are annually named to the conference academic team as the squad strives to earn a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Practice schedules are set to accommodate the player’s class schedules. Conference games are played predominantly on Fridays and Sundays, which limits missed class time and time away from campus.
Considering Basketball at Sewanee? At Sewanee, basketball is more than a game ... it’s an experience!
