Transcript of 2011-12 ECU SA Annual Report
This year, the Division of Student Affairs completed our Strategic Plan through the year 2014. Our Student Affairs Educators launched a strategic planning process to mobilize the Division around the opportunities of focused identity and priorities development as well as challenges such as sustainability and financial austerity. This process intentionally aligned the SA Strategic Plan with East Carolina University’s Strategic Action Plan and the institutional emphasis on effectiveness, as well as positioned the Division to achieve distinctive contributions to student success. Our strategic planning was, and continues to be, a process of collective leadership and collaboration resulting in an outcomes-focused approach to galvanize the Division’s future work.

Our 29 departments and more than 280 Student Affairs Educators have experienced some wonderful accomplishments where partnerships, collaboration and teamwork produced high-quality, student-focused events, programs and services that are significant factors to our ECU students’ success.
• Completed Strategic Plan - Our new plan articulated our identity, vision, priorities, mission and goals as well as expected outcomes and measureable results. This plan aligns institutionally and provides a culture of evidence and improvement through 2014.
• Professional Development – Our second year continued to show growth and success. Our audience has grown from just a divisional resource to serving our campus partners, faculty, staff and students. Speakers and presenters covered topics such as leadership, health & wellness and enhancing your communication. The number of programs and participants has doubled compared to last year.
• New Student Welcome and Convocation and Plunge into Purple – More than 2,000 students attended the New Student Welcome and Convocation at Minges Coliseum. Convocation, which is followed by Pirate Palooza at the football stadium, kicked off six weeks of program intended at engaging first-year students called Plunge into Purple.
• Chancellor’s Student Leadership Academy (pictured above - Chancellor Steve Ballard talking with students during the opening reception) – ECU started the Chancellor’s Leadership Academy in 2008 to help our university professionals, faculty and staff understand the concepts of leadership and grow to become stronger leaders. This year, the Division of Student Affairs adapted the university model, but tailored it toward students, so they can work on becoming better leaders as they prepare to enter the work force.
