Head Coach: Brian EtzkinAssistant Coach: Jay Tee

With four letterwinners returning and a strong freshmen class, the Cleveland State men’s tennis team is posed to capture their fifth straight Horizon League Championship during the 2011-12 season. Among those returning are two-time first team All-Horizon League honoree Yannick Goossens and reigning Newcomer of the Year, Matt Kuelker.

“This season we will have to work very hard to hold our place in the Horizon League since we now have a target on our backs. The biggest thing is that somebody will have to beat us because we are not going to give it away,” Etzkin said.

To open the season, the trio of Goossens, Kuelker and Ali Shabib will play at the top of the lineup. Goossens is the most experienced of the group, returning for his senior season ranked fifth on CSU’s all-time ca-reer singles wins list with 67.

“On any given day, Yannick can be the best player in the league. I’m hoping that he can put everything together for his senior year and go out on top,” Etzkin said.

Kuelker, who was named the Co-Newcomer of the Year, returns for his sophomore season as one of CSU’s top singles players. Kuelker post-ed a 22-12 singles record last season and was one of two Vikings to go undefeated in league play.

“Matt is a self-described all-court serve and volley grinder. He can do almost anything on the court and he is good at exploiting his opponent’s weaknesses,” Etzkin said.

Ali Shabib, one of four newcomers on this season’s team, has already shown that he can be one of the top players in the league after leading the Vikings with a 6-6 record during a tough fall schedule.

“Ali has been a new weapon for us this season, and he has a great en-ergy on the court for us. Throughout the fall season the team was already rallying around his energy that he had on the court,” Etzkin said.

Jorg Van Der Vloet and Nolan Marks are two more newcomers for CSU this season, and can both play at a high level and will be com-peting for CSU in the middle of the lineup.

“Jorg improved so much throughout the fall season and he has a very high ceiling of where his game can go. He strikes one of the cleanest balls and he is very demanding of himself which will allow him to play towards the top of the lineup this spring.”

“Nolan has been focusing on developing his game so that he doesn’t have to depend so much on his serve and it showed through-out his play last fall. He will always have his live arm and because of that he is one of the hardest players on our team to break,” Etzkin said.

Following strong fall seasons, Matt Ford and Jay Jones will be competing for the No. 6 spot in the Viking lineup for the spring. Last year, Ford posted a 16-16 singles record including a 6-1 mark in league play, while Jones played in just 11 matches.

“Matt got better as the season went on last year, and I am looking for that same progress again this year. He has the experience of win-ning the clinching point in the Horizon League Championship, and because of that I believe in him and know that I can count on him to do the job.”

“I am really proud to see the progress that Jay has made over the past two seasons, he has worked a lot on his own and it has paid off. This year he has a chance to earn a spot in the starting lineup for the first time and I am very excited to see that,” Etzkin said.

Ben Shklyar rounds out CSU’s roster for the spring season, joining the Vikings as a talented freshman who has the ability to earn a spot in the lineup throughout the year.

“Ben definitely has the ability to move up the lineup this season, he is a big guy who has some weapons on the court. I expect to see him in the starting lineup at some point this season,” Etzkin said.

Entering the spring season, CSU’s doubles lineup is still undecided, as Etzkin will have multiple options to work with. One of the top options for the Vikings will be Goossens and Shabib, after their 8-5 fall season.

“Yannick and Ali have proven that they can win against top teams after their record that they posted during the fall. Both of them are also capable of playing with other teammates to make the doubles lineup that much stronger,” Etzkin said.

Another doubles option this season will be Kuelker and Van Der Vlo-et, who posted a 4-2 record during the fall.

“Matt and Jorg will definitely see some doubles action this spring. They had some good runs during the fall and they proved that they can play together at a high level,” Etzkin said.

The trio of Shklyar, Ford and Jones will also be in the running for a spot in the doubles lineup, as all three have shown that they can be suc-cessful in the doubles rotation.

“Matt, Ben and Jay are all definitely options for us in the doubles line-up this spring. All three of them have shown that they can step into the rotation and play quality matches for us,” Etzkin said.

HeaD CoaCH // 10tH season

Success is becoming commonplace for Cleveland State tennis coach Brian Etzkin. As he enters his 10th season with the men’s tennis program, Etzkin is ready to lead the Vikings to their fifth straight Horizon League Championship and fifth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Last year, Etzkin led the Vikings to their fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, after guiding the team to its fourth straight Horizon League Championship (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011). Under Etzkin, CSU has posted 15 or more wins for the past five seasons, including back-to-back 20-win campaigns during 2009 and 2010.

Etzkin became the head coach at CSU in 2002-03, taking over a men’s program that was in dire need of rebuilding. The change came almost overnight, as the Vikings won nine matches during Etzkin’s first year, six more than the previous two years combined. In his time thus far, Etzkin has built a men’s program that is one of the most consistent in the league. The team has finished third or better in six straight years and the four conference championships mark the first in program history.

The winningest coach in school history, Etzkin reached an impressive milestone dur-ing the 2008-09 season, recording his 100th career victory with the men’s program. Entering the 2011-12 season, Etzkin has an overall record of 137-90 at the helm of the Vikings.

Thanks to his accolades, Etzkin is a three-time Horizon League Coach of the Year, earning the honor following the 2010, 2009 and 2007 seasons. In addition, he was named the 2009 ITA Midwest Regional Men’s Coach of the Year.

Etzkin has mentored six all-league first team honorees, including four-time nominee Phil Orno (2007, 08, 09, 10) who was also named the Player of the Year as a sopho-more. Two Vikings have earned Newcomer of the Year honors under Etzkin; Matt Kuelker last season and current assistant coach Jay Tee who won the award during 2003.

The Vikings are just as impressive off the court also, as Rob Fox, Jay Jones and Aris Spirtos were all named ITA Scholar-Athletes last year and the men’s team has re-ceived ITA All-Academic honors twice, during 2009 and 2007.

Three Vikings have also been awarded the Horizon League Herb Foster Sportsman-ship Award, including Fox who earned the honor last season. Steven Wipprecht (2009) and Brad Groleski (2006) also earned the accolade during their time at CSU.

Etzkin has also encouraged his players to become community leaders. Over the past 10 years three members of the men’s tennis team have been involved with the Cleveland State Student-Athlete Advisory Council, including Wipprecht and Tee who each served as the council president. Wipprecht served in the role during the 2008-09 season, while Tee served as president during 2005-06. Groleski also served as the vice president during the 2006-07 season.

In addition, the Vikings have gotten involved in many community service projects over the years, including working at the Cleveland Food Bank and adopting a sec-ond grade class at Marion-Sterling Elementary school in downtown Cleveland. At the food bank, the student-athletes do anything from sort and package food to put together boxes that will be sent out to those in need. When the Vikings visit the elementary school, they assist students with their reading, comprehension and vo-cabulary skills.

Etzkin was born in Cleveland and raised in Wooster, but returned to Northeast Ohio after working as an assistant men’s tennis coach at Michigan State. While with the Spar-tans, he assisted in every aspect of the program, including serving as recruiting coordi-nator.

He also worked as the assistant tennis professional at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility in addition to being the Tennis Director and Head Pro at Walnut Hills Country Club. Prior to working with Michigan State, Etzkin spent two years as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s teams at Western Illinois University from 1998-2000.

Etzkin also coached the 2002 Midwest Junior Davis Cup team to the national champi-onship in Columbia, S.C. He is an active United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Certified Teaching Pro.

Etzkin played college tennis for four years at Southern-Illinois University-Carbondale, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology. As a senior in 1998, he received GTE Aca-demic All-American honors and was a two-time Missouri Valley Conference All-Aca-demic selection.

He later returned to school, earning a master’s degree in sport management from West-ern Illinois in 2000.

Jay Tee, a former standout in the men’s tennis pro-gram at Cleveland State, is returning for his third season as an assistant coach with the Vikings.

Last season Tee helped guide CSU to its fourth-straight Horizon League Championship, and its fourth-straight appearance in the NCAA Tourna-ment.

Tee was a member of the men’s team from 2002-06 and compiled more than 40 wins in singles, playing mostly at the No. 2 position. He is ranked 10th on the all-time singles wins list at CSU and recorded a 58-46 doubles mark, playing mostly at the No. 1 position.

The 2002-03 Horizon League Newcomer of the Year, Tee was selected to the All-Horizon League second team four times throughout his tenure at Cleveland State. He also served as president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as a se-nior.

Tee graduated from CSU in 2006 with a degree in history and served as an As-sistant Tennis Professional at Lake Toxaway Country Club in North Carolina in 2007. He then held the position of Director of Junior Development at the Asheville Racquet and Fitbess Club from 2007-09.

For the fourth straight season the Cleveland State men’s tennis team earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after claiming the Horizon League Championship for the fourth time in program history. On the season, four players recorded at least 20 singles wins, just the second time in school history the feat has been accomplished.

The Vikings, who tallied a 16-8 overall record last year, recorded their fifth straight winning season and their sixth under head coach Brian Etzkin. CSU was a perfect 7-0 during league play for the third straight season, including 7-0 sweeps over Youngstown State and Valparaiso.

CSU’s success started during the fall, as the Vikings combined for a 47-44 singles record during fall tournaments and a 31-28 doubles record. The tandem of Rob Fox and John Haley were the only Vikings to capture a title during the fall season, as they won the Doubles Flight A at the Ball State Invitational.

The trio of Yannick Goossens, Matt Kuelker and Fox represented Cleveland State at the exclusive All-American Classic in early October, with Goossens picking up the lone singles win for the Vikings.

The Vikings had a successful outing at the ITA Midwest Regional Cham-pionship, as four players advanced to the Round of 16 in singles and doubles action combined. On the singles side, Fox and Kuelker both won two matches to advance to the

Round of 16, while the doubles teams of Goossens and Kuelker and Fox and Haley did the same.

CSU had a rough start to begin the spring season, as the Vikings fell at Western Michigan and Michigan State. Etzkin’s squad rebounded with four straight wins over the next two weeks, including victories over St. Bonaventure and Xavier.

Over the next seven matches CSU managed just two victories, defeating Duquesne and Youngstown State. Two of Cleveland State’s losses during that span came to top-15 opponents though, as CSU fell at No. 3 Ohio State and at No. 12 Kentucky.

Cleveland State ended the regular season on a eight-match win streak which in-cluded six league victories. During that span the Vikings were led by Haley who notched eight singles victories, while the trio of Matt Ford, Fox and Kuelker each won six.

After a perfect 7-0 Horizon League season, the Vikings earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament and received a bye into the semifinals. CSU cruised to a 4-0 victory over No. 4 seed UIC in the semifinals, advancing to the Championship match for the fourth straight year where they met No. 2 seed Green Bay.

The Vikings got out to a 1-0 lead in the championship match after earning the dou-bles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Kuelker put CSU up 2-1 after earning a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles and was followed by a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win from Haley at No. 5 to give the Vikings a 3-1 lead. Ford then clinched the title for CSU with a 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles, sending the Vikings to their fourth straight NCAA Tournament.

For the third straight season, Cleveland State traveled to 10th-ranked Kentucky for their first round match of the NCAA Tournament. CSU struggled against the Wild-cats, as they suffered a 4-0 setback to conclude the 2010-11 season.

Kuelker and Goossens were each honored for their work throughout the season, Kuelker earning Co-Newcomer of the Year honors along with a second team all-league nod and Goossens earning first team all-league honors. Fox was also hon-ored by the league, as he was named the Herb Foster Sportsmanship Award recipi-ent.

In its 33rd season of operation in the 2011-12 academic year, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as leaders and role models. The Horizon League membership features ten public and pri-vate institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic perfor-mance (competition), academic achievement (learning), community outreach (service), and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experi-ence. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic univer-sity experience for the student-athlete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the princi-pals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports - nine for men (baseball, basket-ball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and div-ing, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and vol-leyball). The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s vol-leyball, and for the first time in League history, women’s golf. The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national office.

A ProuD hISTorYFounded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference

with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s

sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the con-ference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University.

Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joined in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007.

On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive posi-tions.

AThLETIC SuCCESSIn the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed unprec-

edented success on the national stage, highlighted by Butler’s sec-ond consecutive appearance in the NCAA men’s basketball champi-onship game appearance where the Bulldogs fell to Connecticut, 53-41. The Horizon League has compiled a 19-11 record in the past nine years in the NCAA tournament, ranking seventh among all col-legiate conferences for winning percentage.

Green Bay’s women’s basketball team became the league’s first team to reach the Sweet 16 in 2011, knocking off Michigan State in the second round before going toe-to-toe with No. 1 seed Baylor in the regional semifinals. The Phoenix earned a No. 5 seed in the tourna-ment, going 34-2 on the year and holding a perfect 16-0 mark in Horizon League play.

Men’s soccer has tasted victory in seven out of the last nine years (Milwaukee 2002-05, UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In 2011, Butler was consistently ranked in the top 10 of the nation, earning the No. 13 national seed after becoming the last unbeaten team in the country. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last six seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06). Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

ACADEMIC SuCCESSHorizon League student-athletes also excel in the classroom as

more than 500 have been named to the Academic Honor Roll each of the past nine semesters for carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better, including more than 700 for the last four semesters. 24 stu-dent-athletes were named to ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District teams in 2010-11, while six earned Academic All-America honors.

CoMMuNITY SErVICEIn addition to its athletics success, the Horizon League has

secured a well-earned reputation for its community service initia-tives. Each January, member institutions partner with local elemen-tary schools for an art, music and essay contest highlighting the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with winners recognized at League games on the weekend of MLK Day.

The Horizon League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also has continued a tradition of working with youth in Indianapolis

during its annual summer meeting. In addition, SAAC is partnering with Special Olympics, putting on events for olympians in each community. Several League men’s basketball coaches coached barefoot to support Samaritan’s Feet and Coaches vs. Cancer initiatives, and the League’s schools and fans donate to Komen for the Cure for breast cancer aware-ness during its annual women’s basketball championship.

On campus, student-athletes have raised money and awareness for such causes as breast cancer, diabetes and hurricane relief, while hosting blood drives, neighborhood clean-ups, Big Brother/Big Sister programs and more.

SPorTSMANShIPOne of the Horizon League’s points of emphasis is fostering colle-

gial environments for competition among student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans in a pro-active approach. Among the vehicles is the Ethical Conduct Pledge, which is signed each season by student-athletes, coaches, officials, and campus and League administrators. Its purpose is to make all the involved groups aware of the Horizon League expectations of behavior during conference events.

DEMogrAPhICSHorizon League institutions boast a combined enrollment of more

than 130,000 plus nearly a quarter-million living alumni centered in the League’s Midwest footprint. League media markets include five of the nation’s top 35 in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis and Milwaukee, covering more than ten million television households and encompassing more than nine percent of the nation’s television audi-ence.

goVErNANCEThe Horizon League is governed by a Board of Directors comprised

of the ten member institutions’ chief executive officers. Dr. Ronald Berkman, President of Cleveland State, serves as Board Chair through June 30, 2012. John Parry, Director of Athletics at Cleveland State, serves as chair of the Executive Council, and Beth Goetz, Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator at Butler, is the Vice Chair and Shelia Patterson of Cleveland State serves as chair of the Faculty Athletics Representatives.

LEADErShIPJonathan B. (Jon) LeCrone is in his 20th year as Commissioner of

the Horizon League, having been named to the position on May 11, 1992, and is the fifth-longest tenured commissioner among the 31 Division I conferences. He is the fifth commissioner in League history, succeeding Daniel B. “Tucker” DiEdwardo (1989-92), James W. Shaffer (1984-89), Cecil N. Coleman (1980-84) and James J. McCafferty (1979-80).

LeCrone is in the final year of a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Leadership Council after completing a five-year term on the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee.

VISIBILITYThe Horizon League has enhanced its media visibility with a num-

ber of initiatives. The League is in a three-year agreement with ESPN that includes selected regular-season men’s basketball action (ESPN2) and the men’s championship game (ESPN) and features increased exposures each year on ESPNU plus inclusion in the annual O’Reilly ESPNU BracketBusters, one of college basketball’s premier in-season events.
