A sermon by The Reverend Dr. Patrick O'Neill shares that the traditional greeting of the African Maasai tribe

is "Kasserian ingera," which means "How are the children"? And the traditional response, even among Maasai

who have no children, is "Sepati ingera" which means "All the children are well." You see, the Maasai measure

the welfare of their society by how well they take care of their least powerful members, the children. They

know that when the children are well, the tribe as a whole is well.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters mission is all about how well our children are doing, and can do in the future.

We know that some of them struggle to do well and we're here to help. For more than 100 years nationally

and 47 years in Hawaii, we have been a vital part of helping children make positive life choices with the

help of individual, volunteer mentors. The year 2010 was no exception and here are some highlights of our

year in review:

In addition to serving 611 children on Oahu and Kauai, 2010 included several firsts for Big Brothers Big Sisters

of Honolulu. We expanded our signature fundraising event, Bowl For Kids Sake, to our Kauai region in Febru-

ary. This Garden Isle event had a Willy Wonka theme, the Ooompa Loompa Bowl, and raised nearly $15,000

in its first year. And speaking of Kauai, we hired Kaulana Finn to be our first Kauai Community Director. It was

quite an achievement to increase our workforce there by 50% for a total of three staff now!

In March, we held our first Bigs Networking Night as an opportunity for our volunteer mentors to meet, share

experiences and enjoy time together in a fun setting. The event is now a monthly occurrence in different

locations and provides a great way for our volunteers to stay connected with each other, their case manag-

ers, and our agency.

The month of June included a first-time community-wide event for us. It was called Family Fun Day and was

held at Moanalua Gardens. People from all over Oahu were treated to music, food, games and crafts along

with informative health, social service and safety booths. It was wonderful to expand our reach beyond the

children and families we already serve.

Our 24th annual Bowl For Kids' Sake on Oahu was held in August and raised an incredible, record-breaking

sum of more than $300,000. This was 75% more than our previous high the year before! Many thanks go

out to everyone who participated or supported this event as we continue to grow it to be bigger and better

each year.

As 2010 drew to a close in December, we were honored to host a visit from Big Brothers Big Sisters of

America CEO Karen Mathis. It was the first time our agency was visited by the national CEO, and with barely

a year completed, Karen spent several event-filled days with us. She shared her vision for a better future for

all children in America and the role Big Brothers Big Sisters can and should play in that future.

So we entered 2011 inspired and motivated to do all we can to serve more children in Hawaii and achieve the

dream of one day being able to say "All the children are well." We know and appreciate that this can only

be accomplished with the guidance and support of outstanding volunteers, a strong and committed board of

directors, and dedicated staffers.

Our sincere thanks go out to all of you who support us with gifts of time, talent, goods and money. We know

you receive satisfaction from seeing your contributions make a positive difference, and we encourage you to

do even more so we can one day achieve the dream of "Sepati ingera"!

Aloha and Mahalo,

Five years ago, a group of medical students from the John A. Burns

School of Medicine (JABSOM) collaborated with Big Brothers Big Sis-

ters of Honolulu to create a unique health-focused mentoring pro-

gram, they named "Kuaola". The name is based upon the Hawaiian

concept of an adult leading the way for a child.

The pilot program was launched in January 2008 with the help of

several collaborators. including Kamehameha Schools (KS), the John

A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) and the Honolulu Academy of

Arts (HAA). The medical students from JABSOM served as the men-

tors and the mentees were 7th grade students from Nanakuli High

and Intermediate School. The pilot program had three goals: first, to

increase interest in science and health of adolescents in an under-

served area of Oahu; second, to increase the level of social respon-

sibility and commitment to service learning of medical students; and

third, to promote health and disease prevention programs using men-

torship and a variety of activities focusing on health, culture and art.

Due to the success of the pilot program, Kuaola was institutionalized

in the JABSOM curriculum and became available as a Community

Health and Service Site option for all first year medical students.

Within a year, it was the most sought after Community Health Site at

JABSOM.

These successes were shared internationally in August 2010 when Big

and myself were invited to discuss the program at the Pacific Region Indigenous Doctors Congress (PRIDoC)

conference in Whistler, Canada. During the formal presentation, Dr. Voloch and I discussed the history, pur-

pose, current status and future of the program while Big Sister Mandy shared her experience in the program

with her Little Sister Adriane.

Although Big Sister Mandy and Little Sister Adriane have graduated from their official BBBSH match, they

still maintain a close relationship through email, phone calls and Facebook. Currently, Mandy is in her 3rd

year of medical school and Adriane is a sophomore at Nanakuli High School and ranked first in her class.

The success of Kuaola continues as it embarks on another year with new mentors and mentees. An extension

of the program is currently in the works to track previous Littles progress and to allow previous matches to

reconnect and be paired again.

The story of the 8-year friendship between Amanda Weston, the

2010 Community-Based Big Sister of the Year, and her Little Sister

Jasmine is one of struggle, commitment and unbreakable bonds.

Amanda, an attorney with the law office of John H. Price, met Jas-

mine as a 10-year old child in the midst of her parents' separation,

drug abuse, and illness. Fast-forward to the present day, and Jasmine

is a confident and beautiful 18-year-old young woman. Through the

years, the two have built a relationship and share their favorite ac-

tivities with one another. They attend poetry slams and movies, hike,

shop, and try different restaurants. Jasmine's mother says that, "this

match is an example of the program at its best. The relationship is

a source of stability and support. They are the best of friends and

Jasmine can depend on Amanda. The relationship is a source of

2010 Community-Based Big Brother of the Year is Solomon "Kolo"

Kauinui, an engineer at Hawaiian Telcom and realtor with Dower

Realty, Inc. Kolo and Little Brother Cody, 15, have been together

for seven years. Cody grew up never having met his father. As a

youngster, he struggled with school and has been challenged by

learning disabilities. Fortunately, with the support of his mother and

Kolo, he is a happy and well-adjusted young man. Currently, he is a

sophomore at Kaimuki High School and a gifted soccer player. Over

the years, the friendship that Kolo and Cody share has matured

right along with the teen. In the beginning their activities consisted

of cartoon movies, later the two started training at the gym together

and now that Cody has a girlfriend, they go on double dates - most

recently a dinner out to California Pizza Kitchen. Cody's mother

said, "Kolo has given Cody something to look forward to each week.

He lights up when he knows he's going somewhere with Kolo. I am so

glad that Kolo has come into our lives. This is a wonderful program.

I am so very thankful for all the organization does for Cody and I". T: Cody and mom LeeAnn (left) with Kolo, wife Michelle and daughter Eva in 2010. B: Cody and Kolo in 2005.

gram, they named "Kuaola".

JABSOM.

These successes were shared internationally in August 2010 when Big

with informative health, social service and safety booths.

Harvey Rackmil Dennis Brown
