Theyear2011willgodownintheSeattleArtMuseum’shistoryasoneofmonumentalachievement.WecelebratedrecordattendanceandanensuingboosttothelocaleconomythroughourexhibitionPicasso: Masterpieces from the Musée National Picasso, Paris.Morethan405,000visitorscamefromnearandfartoseethiscollectionof150worksthathadneverbeforeleftFrenchsoil.Membershipreachedanall-timehighof48,000.

SAMDowntownhadarobustyearwithmultipleexhibitionsandinstallations,whiletheSeattleAsianArtMuseumhostedtwospecialexhibitions,andtheOlympicSculptureParkfeaturednewworksbylocalandnationalcontemporaryartists.ApartfromPicasso’siconicworks,SAMDowntownvisitorsweretreatedtoabanquetforthesenseswithNick Cave: Meet Me at the Center of the Earth.Nick’s“Soundsuit”sculptures,combiningfashion,recycling,danceandsoundinvadedthestreetsofSeattle,confrontingoursurroundingswithvividcolors.

AtSAAM,ChinesecontemporaryartistWangHuaiqingwasshowcasedin A Painter’s Painter in Contemporary China,anexhibitionof26oils,watercolors,prints,andpencilworksfromthe1970stothepresent.Onelarge-scaleworkwasdisplayedatSAMDowntown.InModern Elegance: The Art of Meiji JapanpresentedscreenpaintingsandhangingscrollsfromKyoto’sfinestmodernmasters.ObjectsalsoincludedcloisonnéenamelwareandextravagantlygildedSatsumaearthenware.

OlympicSculptureParkcontinuedtoamazeandinspirebothSAMandthecommunity.Seattleiteshaveembracedthepark,usingitforeverythingfromdogwalkingtoyoga,dancingtofamilypicnics,orsimplyenjoyingtheartandplants.Thepark’sdesignhelpedSAMearnSalmon-Safecertificationforrestorationofaformerbrownfieldsiteandtheadjacentbeachandinter-tidalareas.Theparkalsowasrecognizedforuseofnativeplantbeddingsandinterpretivesigns,andforeffortstoconserveirrigationwaterandtreatstormwaterrunoffthroughrestoredsoils.

Alloftheseactivitiesstrengthenthemuseum’sbondswiththecommunityandspeaktoSAM’scommitmenttoreachingabroadaudience.Ouraimistonurturewithinourcommunityalastingrelationshipwiththearts.Wearehonoredtosharewithyouourannualreport,whichhighlightsthemanywaysSAM“ConnectsArttoLife.”Wearegratefulforourdonors’support,whichmakesitpossibleforustopresentimportantexhibitions,enhanceandprotectourcollections,andofferfreeeducationalprograms.YourcontinuedinvolvementensuresanexcitingandpromisingfutureforSAM.

AsthefirstmajorexhibitionofPabloPicasso’sworkintheNorthwest,theshowwasamilestoneforSAMandourregion,makingalastingimpactonSAMandtheSeattleareaasamonumentalartisticachievementandaneconomicdriver.

Visitorsweretreatedtoacollectionof150worksofart,including75paintingsandsculptures,complementedbyaselectionofdrawingsandprints.Everymajorperiodfromtheartist’sprolificoutputovereightdecadeswasrepresented.

THIS LANDMARK EXHIBITION:

• Attracted405,297visitors,makingitthemostpopularexhibitioninthehistoryofSAMDowntown.

• RankedasthefourthmostattendedexhibitionintheU.S.during2011.

• Engagedmorethan40,000children,teensandadultsinSAMEducation&PublicProgramsrelatedtoPicasso.

• Introduced35%ofPicassovisitorstoSAMforthefirsttime.

• GrewSAMmembershiptoanall-timehighof48,556,including13,662newmembers.

• Createdpartnershipswithmorethan150localorganizationsandbusinessestomaximizetheopportunitiesarisingfromhavingthisexhibitionindowntownSeattle.

• Generatedanestimated$66millionineconomicimpactforWashington,ofwhich$58millionwasgeneratedinKingCounty.

• Supported936jobsand$29.1millioninlaborincome.

Earnedrevenuethroughadmissions,museumstoreandcafésalestotaled$8.3millionor27%offiscalyear2011operatingrevenue.Membershipandeventrevenueprovided$5.8millionor19%,withthebalanceofcontributedrevenueproviding$3.2millionor10%.

Ofthe$29.1millionintotaloperatingexpenses,$18.7million,or64%,wasprogram-related.Accessionofartobjectsthroughpurchasesgenerallyutilizedonor-restrictedfundsandarenotlistedinthestatementofoperatingactivities.

AsofJune30,2011,temporarilyrestrictednetassetsandinvestmentsrestrictedforlong-termpurposes,includingfundsheldinoutsidetrusts,were$132millionand$107million,respectively.
