York colleGe overview York College of Pennsylvania is a private-sector, independent institution of higher education, which focuses on offeringbaccalaureate degree programs in the arts and sciences, business administration, education, public affairs, and nursing. Students may also enroll in courses leading to the associate degree and master’s degree. The College draws its 4,600 full-time undergraduate and 1,500 part-time and graduate students from some 30 states and36 foreign countries. Typically, 50% of York’s freshmen hail from Pennsylvania; 30% from New York and New Jersey; and15% from Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, and Connecticut. Others come from states up and down the East Coast andfrom abroad. Most of York’s part-time and graduate students reside and are employed in the greater York Area. The College occupies a 190-acre, park-like campus, just beyond the York city (pop. 50,000) limits, in the rolling hills ofthe south central part of the state. Close to the heart of “Pennsylvania Dutch” country, York is one hour from Baltimore; twohours from Philadelphia or Washington, DC; and four hours from New York City, Pittsburgh, or Richmond. Nearly half ofits undergraduate students reside in college housing in the vicinity of the campus. York College envisions itself as a center of affordable academic excellence and has received favorable national recogni-tion for its success in offering a higher education program of high quality at a tuition rate substantially lower than the ratescharged by institutions of similar type, scope, and distinction. York’s effective control of tuition costs stems principallyfrom the long-term, generous support of the College by its friends in the York community and its alumni. This support hasprovided both superior debt-free physical facilities and permanent endowment resources sufficient to fund institutionalscholarships and financial aid for needy students. York uses this fiscal strength in turn to provide a kind of “scholarship” toeach of its students in the form of relatively modest charges for tuition and campus housing. York College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges andSchools and has specialized accreditation for its business, nursing, allied health, and recreation programs. York College isproud of its ongoing efforts in gender equity. As per the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act of 1994, information regardingYCP’s gender equity statistics is available for review in the office of the Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation. Stu-dents can request a copy of the report from the Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation.

The Grumbacher

New beginnings. Not the beginning of a newteam, but the beginning of a prolific program. The York College women’s lacrosse team enters the2010 season no longer an expansion squad, but abonafide contender in the mid-atlantic region.

“We are building a program here at York,” headcoach Jen Dragoni said. “We have put down thenecessary foundation and now we are building up.It is going to take a lot of hard work to get to wherewe ultimately want to be, but I believe we are onthe right track.”

One of the region’s top young coaches, Dragonienters her third season at the helm of the Spartanprogram optimistic after a fantastic offseason.

“We have some great talent returning this season, players who gained valuable experience last yearand worked very hard in the offseason,” Dragonisaid. “We get to couple that with a great crop ofnewcomers who are going to push for time andlook to be instant impact players.”

The Spartans should indeed be optimistic headinginto this season. Highlighting that optimism aresenior captains Meg Foy, Kelly Vrana, and Courtney Heller. Foy, a two-year Spartan captain, is a natural leader whose tremendous ability and competitive attitude drive the Spartan squad. Foy isa fantastic all-around performer who will provideoffensive spark and defensive bite for the Yorksquad. Vrana returns as an All-Capital AthleticConference performer in 2009. A tough student-athlete with outstanding skill, Vrana is set to be thebackbone of the defensive unit in 2010. Hellercomes into the year as another exceptionally talented defender. A solid presence on the defensiveend, Heller is expected to be an outstanding playerand leader this season.

“Our three captains are simply incredible,” Dragoni raved. “They each bring something differ-ent and unique to the table. Meg [Foy] is the heartof our team and is one of the top players in the conference. Kelly [Vrana] gives us a veteran who isaggressive yet intelligent on the defensive end.Courtney [Heller] adds a solid and consistent presence on defense, and is ready for a tremendous2010.”

These three will look to lead a very young Spar-tan squad, which consists of over 70 percent under-classmen. Of the 24 student-athletes on the roster,17 are either sophomores or freshmen, while 13 arenew to the Spartan program.

“Despite adding so many newcomers, our teamhas come together and really gelled as a unit,”Dragoni said. “Being a close-knit team will play asignificant role in our ability to be successful thisyear. I believe we are headed in the right direction.”

One of the major keys to that success will beYork’s talented defensive unit. Despite their

aforementioned youth, the Green and White returnfour players who spent significant time on the defensive end of the field in 2009. Joining Vranaand Heller are Katie Mansell and Brittany Ger-aghty, juniors who each saw considerable time inthe Spartan defensive third last year. Mansell, whostarted 14 of the 15 contests in which she appearedin 2009, is a dedicated player that communicateswell with her teammates in an effort to thwart opposing attacks. Geraghty will look to draw on thevaluable experience she gained as a sophomore foran even better 2010.

Adding to York’s strong core of defenders arefour newcomers who will add significant talent tothe ranks. Katie Vautier comes to the program looking to be a solid contributor from day one.Vautier is an aggressive defender whose relentlesspursuit of the ball will gain valuable possessionsfor the Green and White. Fellow rookie Jordan Hallis another outstanding youngster with the ability tocompete for time right away. A strong defensivepresence, Hall has great stick skills and the abilityto stop opposing attacks. Michelle Moore brings agreat understanding of defensive concepts to theSpartan squad while Kerry Felton will look to addquality depth to the unit.

The Green and White’s goalkeeping unit adds toYork’s already outstanding defense. A pair ofrookie netminders brings exceptional ability between the Spartan pipes. Kelsey Evans, whohelped her high school team to a Maryland statetitle in 2009, will look to make an immediate im-pact as a freshman. Evans sports not only solidability but also a great drive to improve her skillseveryday. Tina Nicklas joins the Spartan squad as another talented rookie. Nicklas, who has outstand-ing confi-dence and asuperbwork ethic, will striveto push fortime in thecage thisseason asshe contin-ues to honeher skills.Bothgoalies willmake animmediateimpact onthe squad.

2010 SparTan women’S lacroSSe previewstrong point of our team this season,” Dragoni said.“With the mix of veteran talent and youthful exuberance that we have, I believe that we can bevery strong in the back. We will be able to be moreaggressive, more proactive in what we do defen-sively, which will help us be very difficult to scoreagainst.”

In the midfield, the Green and White host a slewof excellent players that will help the Spartansreach new heights this season. Led by Foy, who isarguably the top midfielder in the CAC, this groupreturns four starters from a season ago while welcoming a pair of stellar rookies.

“Our midfield consists of athletic players, withplenty of experience, who can get up and down thefield and do positive things for us on both ends,”Dragoni said. “We have fast, strong players that arecapable of scoring goals on the offensive end aswell as stopping attacks on the defensive end. Our midfield could become a very strong area ofour squad this season.”

The three returners are each entering their sopho-more campaigns after gaining valuable game experience in 2009, starting a combined 48 of 51contests. Ashley Kanzler had a fantastic first seasonin a Spartan uniform tallying 27 points on 23 goalsand four assists. Instant offense, Kanzler possessesmarvelous stick skills and has the ability to dodgepast defenders. She will be called upon to providedYork with steady, consistent, and sterling playthroughout the year. Meaghan Doak, who is primedfor a breakout year in 2010, was another offensiveforce in just her freshman season. After tallying 14goals last year, she will now be looked upon to leadYork’s offensive plays. With her innate ability tofind open teammates, Doak should become a greatplaymaker. Whitney Kendall, a more defensive-minded midfielder, returns for season number twoin the Green and White. A hard-working player,Kendall uses her superb defensive positioning aswell as her outstanding speed and endurance to notonly frustrate opponents but also provide a sparkfor the Green and White.

Rookies Leah Schultz and Kimberly Wayson aretwo newcomers who will be expected to be immediate contributors. Schultz is an aggressivedefender who also has outstanding stick skills thatwill help her add punch to the Spartan offense.Wayson, a two-time all-county player in highschool, is extremely dangerous in the open fieldand is able to create as well as finish scoring opportunities.

York’s attacking unit, aided by a talented midfield, should create plenty of offense for theSpartans in 2010. A mix of experienced returnerscombined with gifted freshmen will give the Greenand White a potent and dangerous attack.

Junior Molly Kerrigan opens the season as aquality leader for this group after scoring 19 goalsand dishing out five assists in her 17 games lastyear. Kerrigan, who has gained considerable experience over the past two seasons, is an aggressive and strong player who has the ability toscore in bunches. Fellow junior Katie Bowers hasimproved her skills tremendously and will look tobe a valuable asset on the offensive end this season.Sophomore Rachel Klado is set to provide veterandepth to the attack while her dedication and workethic continue to rub off on her teammates.

Kasie White, Lauren Kula, Kelsey Byrd, ChelsaeDamm, and Kara Dorsey make their rookie appearance on the Spartan roster as each looks tomake an impact. White is a very talented playerwith the ability to perform well at the collegiatelevel right away. She understands the game extremely well for a youngster while also possess-ing the ability to shoot in tight space as well as findopen teammates. Kula, a freshman with loads ofpotential, joins the attack as another immediate impact player. Her exceptional ability to “thread theneedle” with her passes as well as consistent movement should make her a serious threat on theoffensive end. Byrd, yet another outstandingdodger with a great stick, has a nose for the goalthat should pay dividends for the Spartan programboth this season and in years to come. Damm is ahard-working student-athlete who continues to improve while Dorsey, who will gain valuable collegiate experience this year, will add neededdepth to the attacking unit.

“The talent level that we have within our attackwill allow us to be very creative and very danger-ous this season,” Dragoni commented. “Our depthis another key asset this year that will allow us togo all-out throughout the entire 60 minutes. Each ofour attackers has the ability to score and, as long asthey work well together, should be able to score inbunches.”

As the optimism abounds, Dragoni knows that asquad with such a talented crop of underclassmencould be the beginning of a very bright future.

“This is going to be an extremely important season for the future of this program,” Dragonisaid. “The upperclassmen will really need to stepup each day and lead the younger players in theright direction. We have some very talented student-athletes on this roster who, no matter whattheir age is, can play high-quality lacrosse at theDivision III level.”

The Spartans’ new beginning, one filled withpromise and hope, officially begins on Saturday,February 20, when the Green and White host Mont-clair St. at York’s Kinsley Field in a 1:00 p.m. tilt.

Head Coach

Jen dragoniThird Season (18-16)

Jen Dragoni enters her third season as the head women’s lacrosse

coach as one of the top young coaches in the region. In 2008,

Dragoni’s first season at the helm, she guided the Spartans to their

highest win total in the short history of the program, going 11-6 over

their 17 contests. For her career, Dragoni has coached four of York’s

seven All-Capital Athletic Conference honorees. Dragoni’s tireless efforts have built the Spartan squad

into a solid regional program - one that should ascend the national ranks in the coming years.

Prior to York, Dragoni served as an assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Goucher College for two

seasons. She earned her master’s degree in education from Goucher as she was a Gopher from 2006 to

2007. Dragoni was responsible for assisting the head coach in all of the day-to-day aspects of running
