The Wisconsin State Honors Music ProjectThe Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) State Honors Music Project began in 1967 to provide musically talented youth with the opportunity to rehearse and per-form with the nation’s finest conductors in a professional, highly disciplined setting. In 1995, WSMA proudly sponsored the first-ever Middle Level State Honors Band. A WSMA Middle Level State Honors Choir was added in 1996, and in 1997, the WSMA Middle Level State Honors Orchestra made its debut performance.
Students in grades 6-8 who attend WSMA-member schools are eligible to audition for the WSMA Middle Level State Honors Music Project. Auditions include an individual performance and an ensemble class taught by a WSMA cer-tified adjudicator. This year, nearly 1,350 students applied to
audition for the privilege of being one of the 320 students selected for membership in the three prestigious WSMA Middle Level State Honors ensembles.
Music teachers, parents, administrators and the WSMA staff contribute time, talent and encouragement for every student involved in the State Honors Music Honors Project. Young musicians selected for these ensembles discover new levels of individual and group performance. Most impor-tantly, the effort and dedication required of each Honors participant results in a lifelong memory of their initiative, achievement and commitment to excellence as musicians and as our future leaders.

ProgramExultate Justi in Domino Lodovico Grossi da Viadana/ed. Mason Martens Walton Publications HL 08500694
Lodovico Grossi was born in Viadana, near Parma, and is mostly known simply as Lodovico da Viadana. He was a Franciscan monk and held a number of musical posts in churches and cathedrals in Mantua, Cremona, Concordia and Fano; he spent time in Munich, Padova and Rome. Most of Viadana’s musical output is sacred, written for the church liturgy. The music closely follows the texts; Viadana offers an interpretation of the words. Stylistically, his works show the transition from Renaissance to early Baroque music. While he probably did not invent the basso continuo, he is certainly one of the first composers to use it.
“Exsultate Justi” is a tuneful and imaginative setting of Psalm 33 :1-3; “a Hymn to Providence”. It was published in Viadana’s Concerti ecclesiastici (1602), the first vocal score with basso continuo, figured bass. The motet is in three parts, perhaps already in the baroque concert style: the first part is homophonic, the second is polyphonic. Double and triple meters alternate, and Viadana uses the voices to imitate the harp and lyre mentioned in the psalm text. The motet ends with a return to the homophonic first part; it is a repetition of the opening verse.
A Red, Red Rose Z. Randall Stroope Alliance Music Publications, AMP 0586
The 18th Century poet Robert Burns composed “A Red, Red Rose” as a song in 1794 at the end of his life. While Burns’ original melody is rarely heard today, his poem has inspired countless composers to set the text to music, including American composer Z. Randall Stroope. This arrangement features some of the text in Scots Language, and the words express a love that is new, but will last forever.
Wanting Memories Ysaye Barnwell Musical Source, YMB103
Dr. Ysaye Barnwell is most known for her singing with and composing music for the vocal ensemble “Sweet Honey In The Rock.” Dr. Barnwell has earned a significant reputation as a commissioned composer and arranger, author, master teacher and choral clinician in African American cultural performance. This arrangement features a repetitive melody with both rhythmic and melodic ostinati.
Travelin’ Train Rollo Dilworth Hal Leonard, HL 08749563
Based on the poem “Travel” by Edna St. Vincent Millay, this selection features American musical themes of blues, gospel and jazz. Each are incorporated to assist in celebrating the legacy of the poet. Percussive train sounds produced by the choir open “Travelin’ Train.” The first stanza of the poem has been set to a chord progression closely modeling a 12-bar blues pattern. The second verse shifts to a gospel-style chorus in a joyous celebration of excitement, leading to the third stanza in a slightly slower tempo suggesting a longing and yearning for travel experience. The selection closes with a modulation and more elaborate setting of the blues refrain.
The Arrow and the Song Joshua Shank Santa Barbara Music Publishing, SBMP 605
Commissioned by White Bear Lake High School Choir, this Joshua Shank composition is based on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s infamous poem by the same name. The text portrays something about music and the strength of friendship through a simple and beautiful melody that permeates the piece.
In 2002, the composer became the youngest composer ever awarded the Raymond Brock Student Composition Award by the American Choral Directors Association.
I Dream A World Rollo Dilworth Hal Leonard, HL 08749866
The text for “I Dream a World” is taken from a Langston Hughes (1902-1967) poem bearing the same title. His verses reflect the experiences that spoke directly to the societal issues of his time, including politics, religion and racism.
“I dream a world where man, no other man will scorn, where love will bless the earth and peace, its paths adorn. I dream a world where all will know sweet freedom’s way. Where greed no longer saps the soul nor avarice blights our day. A world I dream where black or white, whatever race you be, will share the bounties of the earth and every man is free. Where wretchedness will hang its head and joy, like a pear, attends the needs of all mankind. Of such I dream, my world!”

ProgramMarch to the Scaffold H. Berlioz arr. Carter (from Symphonie Fantastique) Oxford
The fourth movement of Berlioz Symphony Fantastique is perhaps one of Berlioz’s most recognizable and performed compositions. Berlioz claims to have composed the movement in a single night, reconstructing music from an unfinished opera. The movement opens with timpani, proceeding as a march filled with blaring horns and rushing passages. Prior to the musical depiction of his march to the guillotine and subsequent execution, there is a brief nostalgic recollection of a “fixed idea” played by the clarinet, as though representing the last conscious thought of a soon to be executed man. A single short G minor chord represents the fatal blow of the guillotine blade, followed by a series of pizzicato notes depicting the severed head rolling into the basket. The final nine bars contain a series of tutti G Major chords, seemingly conveying the cheering of the victorious onlookers.
Peer Gynt Suite #1 Edvard Grieg Luck 57515
I. Morning Mood II. Ase’s Death III. Anitra’s Dance IV. In the Hall of the Mountain King
The music of “Peer Gynt” was originally written as incidental music for a five-act play by Norwegian dramatist Henrick Ibsen. Grieg extracted two suites from the collection which have become popular today as concert music. Written in 1875, Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg captured the rising sun, the lamenting of death and, in “The Hall of the Mountain King,” the imagery of a chase scene. Painting with notes, Grieg immortalized the people, scenes and moods of Norway.
Komm Susser Tod J.S. Bach arr. Kjelland Highland/Etling
“Come, Sweet Death, Come Blessed Rest” is among Bach’s most popular works. By means of melody, Bach expresses his desire for death and heaven. Originally written for solo voice and basso continuo, the lyrics open with “Come, sweet death, come blessed rest, come lead me to peace.” The melody has been adapted and transformed by several composers and arrangers, including this arrangement published by Dr. Kjelland.
Festique M.L. Daniels Ludwig Publishing Co.
Born in Cleburne, Texas, composer M.L. Daniels received all his formal education in Texas, including undergrad and graduate degrees from Abilene Christian College and a doctorate degree from North Texas State University. Two of his compositions have been recognized by the prestigious National School Orchestra Association. The theme of “Festique” generates from the first three pitches played by the full orchestra in the opening measures. The slow middle section reverses the three pitches, but retains some of the syncopated rhythm. The original pitches return in the chorale, but without the syncopation. The chorale appears again in the last section, but is interrupted by the original syncopated theme played by the violins. From this point to the climactic ending, the struggle continues, with the non-syncopated theme seemingly dominating at the conclusion.

ProgramEncomium George Sweet Carl Fisher Publishing Co.
Meaning “a formal expression of praise,” “Encomium” contains a fresh harmonic palette from new composer George Sweet. An original fanfare for concert band, this short work highlights soaring brass fanfares, driving rhythmic percussion, and intricate woodwind figurations. The combination of heroic melodic writing and rhythmic drive makes this piece an ideal concert opener.
Overture Jubiloso Frank Erickson (1923-1996) Alfred Publishing Co.
As a composer, arranger, conductor, performer, and educator Frank Erickson’s work continues to have a positive influence on wind instrumentalists. Of his nearly fifty compositions for band, “Overture Jubiloso” remains one of his most popular with regular performances by groups throughout the world. Bold flourishes of tone color are reinforced with brilliant flowing melodic lines, and accented rhythmic ostinati are combined with virtuosic technical passages making this work a thrill for listeners and players alike.
From this Valley Gregory Rudgers Carl Fisher Publishing Co.
A fantasy on the traditional American folk song Red River Valley, this stunning composition ranges from dramatic to lush and lyrical and back. All of the forces of the modern concert band are employed to their fullest to create a work which features both delicate chamber sections and grandiose full band climaxes in the classic symphonic tradition.
Just a Closer Walk Calvin Custer Hal Leonard Publishing Co.
“Just a Closer Walk With Thee” is a traditional American gospel hymn that gained national prominence in the 1930’s and 1940s. It is perhaps the most frequently played number in the hymn and dirge section of the traditional New Orleans funeral setting. Inspirational lyrics and a soulful melody have made this one of the most recorded gospel tunes in history, and modern performers continue to program this work in concerts, recordings, and other ceremonial settings. This arrangement by Calvin Custer captures the New Orleans style beautifully and it even features a solo band of players in the opening improvisatory section—Enjoy!
King Cotton March John Philip Sousa arr. Balent Carl Fisher Publishing Co.
Composed in 1895 by “March King” John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) for the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta, GA, “King Cotton March” exemplifies the Sousa tradition. The expression “King Cotton” in general refers to the historically high importance of cotton as a cash crop in the southern United States. “King Cotton” is a typically rousing Sousa march in six-eight meter, and it presents a tuneful melody and exciting contrapuntal line that have challenged performers and entertained audiences for over 100 years. Composer/arranger Andrew Balent masterfully arranged this classic march, making it accessible to young musicians, while retaining all the excitement and energy of the original work.

WSMA State Honors Music Project
WSMA State Honors Music Project Endowment Fund
In October 2006, the Wisconsin Foundation for School Music announced its most ambitious campaign to date, a $6 million goal to endow each chair and conductor of the WSMA Middle Level and High School State Honors Music Project. With each chair endowed, a student’s cost to participate would be minimal or paid for entirely and the costs to bring in nationally renowned conductors would be covered through this endowment.
WFSM is proud to recognize the following people who contributed generously to name a chair in the Middle Level State Honors Music Project:
