WELCOME TO WEST COAST GREEN 2010! If you are holding this conference guide today, I congratulate you for being a part of a groundswell of positive change. It is a privilege to be here with you at this time of tremendous opportunity. Together, we represent a growing human network dedicated to ingenious and inspired solutions.

Our conference is designed to be a reflection of the enormous potential within each of us and to provide groundbreaking strategies coupled with fuel for the human spirit. We recognize that innovation is the foundation on which all future forward ideas must be built. To underscore its importance, our theme this year is - The Power of Ten - which celebrates the exponential change generated by collective intelligence. This is the externalization of an inner truth: that we are undeniably connected as one planet and one people. Therefore, it is only fitting that we gather here to celebrate human inventiveness, knowing that there is infinite power in innovation and right action.

On behalf of my team, we stand humbly before you, connected to and cognizant of all who have dared to think differently, taken the other path and in doing so did nothing short of improving our world to the power of ten.

With tremendous gratitude and respect for the infinite and irreplaceable person that you are.

Office of the Mayor Gavin Newsom City & County of San Francisco

GREETINGS FROM THE MAYOR OF SAN FRANCISCO On behalf of the City and County of San Francisco, it is my great pleasure to host West Coast Green 2010, the world’s leading conference on green innovation for the built environment. The importance of greening our cities has never been clearer. Sustainably constructed buildings are critical to everybody’s health. They preserve natural resources, minimize personal health risks, and mitigate climate change. But it can’t stop there. Buildings are just one facet of the complex system that constitutes the whole built environment – from transportation to utilities to waste treatment. I’m very encouraged to see events like West Coast Green that enable every component of the system to meet in one place and find the best solutions together. Bringing all our resources to building the smartest, most sustainable cities possible is one of the best investments we can make. San Francisco has long been a leader in the green economy with one of the most aggressive programs in the country for green building standards in the private commercial and residential sectors interfacing with the clean energy and clean technology sectors to develop innovative solutions for some of our biggest environmental challenges. If you want to be part of this effort, you’re in the right place. West Coast Green leads the way in showcasing the best thinking of our time and plants the seeds for some of the best solutions in our future. You are the key to spreading this important information. Welcome to San Francisco, and enjoy the conference! With warmest regards,

Gavin Newsom Mayor

The Home Depot Foundation has made a commitment to invest $400 million in communities over the next ten years. This will help support the creation of 100,000 affordable homes, built

responsibly, and the planting of over three million community trees. While we count the homes that are built and the trees that are planted, the true impact of this work will be measured by the

A NOTE FROM OUR EDUCATION DIRECTORAs the pace of change has accelerated, West Coast Green has evolved to stay ahead of the curve. From our beginning, five years ago, with greener building materials and design, we have grown to incorporate clean technology, energy policy, emerging business models and now the smart grid and electric vehicles. Each year we put our finger on the pulse and craft a program about what’s pushing the needle of human potential, constantly exploring ways to tap the power of innovation and entrepreneurship to build vibrant, resilient communities.

This year we’re addressing scalable solutions and exploring the Power of 10! There’s power in the 10% improvements we can each make in our daily lives, and power in the 10X solutions that can transform all our lives. So this year we honor both capability and possibility by asking: “What’s Your Power of Ten?” At West Coast Green our power is to have 100 speakers hold 1000 conversations that inspire 10,000 people to make a positive difference. So our power is really YOUR power. It is all of our partners, advisors, sponsors, faculty and attendees who bring West Coast Green to life, and we thank you all for creating it with us.

Enjoy!

Few businesses have stepped up to provide products and services that help shift people’s habits accordingly. IDEO’s work in behavior change highlights the tremendous opportunity for goods, services, and new business models to not only survive in change, but also thrive on it.Chris Waugh, Practice Lead, Consumer Experience Design, IDEOChris Waugh is a leading member of IDEO’s Consumer Experience Design practice in California. He has been involved in a variety of IDEO innovation breakthroughs ranging from food and beverage to personal banking. MULTI-MODAL TRANSPORTATION: SOLUTIONS FOR MOBILE URBANISM

ROOM C235Urban infrastructures are underperforming around the world. Using natural systems, we can improve site and building performance without increasing energy use. However, urban environments are often hostile to ecology, inspiring today’s designers to blend technological and natural solutions into an integrated urban fabric. This presentation explores how ecosystem services can be used to enhance the performance of the built environ-ment.

Josiah Raison Cain, Co-Founder, Design EcologyJosiah has been greening major projects for over 18 years. His synthesis of design, technology and environment to optimize building and infrastructure performance has been featured at Cascadia, Dwell, Esalen, Harvard, Sunset Magazine, HGTV and the NY Times. He is the Director of Sustainable Design at UCB Extension, and visionary de-signer of ecological urban environments.
