Noah’s Ark was established in 1986 in response to the exploitation of poor

artisans in Moradabad, Northern India by exporters in the

unorganised handicraft sector. More than 500 artisans are now working for Noah’s Ark, choosing Fair Trade employment to create better opportunities for their families and their communities. A

portion of Noah’s Ark’s profits is allocated to run a school providing

free education to nearly fifty artisans’ children near Moradabad.

Bezalila was formed in 1994 as a co-operative structure to unite disparate workshops making Malagasy handicrafts. Bezalila provides Fair Trade employment to formerly impoverished artisans in crafts including the modelling of these recycled tin cans, called “Kapoaka”.

Our design team worked closely with Motif to develop this range made

from recycled packets, and has also given the ancient technique

of basket weaving a new lease of life. It is usual to recycle as much as possible in Bangladesh and traders buy waste materials from people house to house. The wrappers

are washed thoroughly with soap and laid out in the sun to

dry then distributed to women in their homes to be woven into baskets.

This range is made by Asha, and is hand-crafted by a producer who

is continuing his family’s artisan history as a carpenter. He is inspired by traditional antique furniture that would have been found in affluent Indian households. Both the wood and the sheets of

brass used are procured from merchants in Jaipur, and the

brass is hand-cut as well as die-cut from the sheets.

Most of the carved pieces on the next few pages are made from Shesham

wood, in a small town called Saharanpur, about 100 miles

north of Delhi.They are made by Asha and Aspiration, an organisation which aims to promote and develop cottage industries without

publicising its own work. It provides financial

assistance to all its artisans, and encourages them to send

their children to school.

Despite Kisii being one of the world’s largest producers of soapstone, it is

extremely poor. Most people in Kisii live a subsistence lifestyle, so the

income from soapstone handicrafts is vital to their existence. After the rough outline of each shape is created, the stone is placed in water and sanded until the

chiseled stone is completely smooth. The stone is painted

and the designs are hand etched into the stone to reveal the natural

white under the paint.

These gorgeous new home accessories are made from Gorara stone, an Indian soapstone and are completely hand-carved by the master craftsmen of the Agra bazaar, using traditional skills passed down through generations of artisans. Auromira Exports in Pondicherry, India makes our incense and soaps

– we have added incense cones and twelve new scents of

incense sticks to our range for 2010. The incense is made from natural oils, aromatic roots, selected herbs and flowers, and the soaps are made from 100%

vegetable materials. Auromira uses recycled

paper to make the packaging, and the designs are hand

screen-printed.

Touch of India carries out most of its work with

Muslim minorities and aims to preserve traditional embroidery techniques such as Kantha embroidery, Zardozi and Aari work. All the sequin and bead embroidery is done by hand, so pieces

such as this new floral range are extremely

labour-intensive and the work is highly skilled.

These new wallhangings from Aspiration are also made from recycled saris; in this

case the borders of saris are used in strips to create diamond

patterns. These pieces are made in Rajasthan after a centuries-old technique which originally began in Turkey where woven cloth was put on the backs of camels and donkeys to protect them from the cold

of the mountains. Nomadic tribes carried the

craft through to Asia and Afghanistan and Pakistan and

eventually to India.

The fabrics used to make these rugs are leftovers and waste pieces

from the garment industries. They are

bought from scrap merchants and large markets, according to weight. Karm Marg’s rag rug artisans are all from local villages in a rural area near

Delhi. The rags are given to the artisans who

growing trees in the world and therefore a perfect sustainable material. The cats with long tails also make great ring-holders! The production of these handicrafts in Indonesian villages prevents the artisans from having to go into the cities

These musical instruments were developed by the artisans at EMA’s production centre in

Kolkata. The artisans are from remote villages or other areas where it is

difficult to make a living. As well as their salary they are provided with food and lodgings. Most of these instruments are traditional Indian instruments, including the Dugi, Nagori and Bongo drums which have wood or clay bodies with leather

stretched across the top. For EMA, the development of skills to make these

products means the development and growth of Indian culture and tradition.
