Saving animals in

TIMES OF DISASTERS

Since January 2010, the Animal Relief Coalition

for Haiti (ARCH) – which WSPA organized just days

after the massive earthquake struck – has been

travelling with its mobile veterinary clinic vaccinating

and caring for thousands of affected dogs, cats,

goats, cattle and horses. So far, 36,813 animals have

been treated and 25,406 animals vaccinated – thanks

to your generosity. We’re also implementing a long-

term plan for Haitians to better protect themselves,

and their animals, against future disasters.

WSPA provided urgently needed assistance

in Mongolia after the most extreme weather in 30

years killed almost 10 million animals and devastated

the one-third of Mongolians who depend on their

livestock for income and survival. WSPA provided 130

tonnes of fodder and 1.3 tonnes of milk powder to

2,500 households, feeding 15,000 vulnerable animals.

Heavy monsoons caused the worst fl oods in Pakistan in 80 years, leaving 20 million animals

starving. WSPA and our partners worked around

the clock to vaccinate thousands of animals and

distribute 160,000 tonnes of feed in affected areas.

Because WSPA supporters responded to our

appeal for help, we’ve also been able to donate

much needed veterinary equipment to help our local

partners care for many more animals in the future.

Delivering

HANDS-ON AID

Four bears in Pakistan have moved into the

new Balkasar sanctuary. The sanctuary, funded by

supporters like you and managed by our partner, the

Bioresource Research Centre (BRC), will allow the 70

bears still engaged in the cruelty of bear baiting to be

rescued and enjoy freedom in natural surroundings.

Your donations helped WSPA and the Bali

Animal Welfare Association (BAWA) vaccinate

42,500 dogs against rabies on the Indonesian

island, preventing a cruel government cull of 65,000

dogs. Our success resulted in the government

authorizing a WSPA-funded vaccination project that

will immunize 460,000 dogs, an essential fi rst step

towards making Bali rabies-free by 2012.

We are continuing to educate First Nations

communities in Canada about humane population

control methods for roaming and unwanted dogs.

Thousands of dogs are in poor health while others

are not having their basic needs for food, shelter and

companionship met. WSPA is coordinating the First

Nations Dogs Working Group to develop programs

that will improve the lives of these dogs.

After it was reported that a baby bear named

Tello was being illegally kept in a fi lthy, tiny cage at

a home in Romania, a specialist team rescued him.

Tello was transported to the WSPA-funded Zarnesti

bear sanctuary, run by our member society Milioane

de Prieteni, and now thrives in his new environment,

alongside 51 other rescued bears.

Achieving great things

FOR ANIMALS

WSPA’s report Curb the Cruelty: Canada’s farm

animal transport system in need of repair, revealed

shocking evidence that millions of farm animals

arrive at their destinations stressed, injured or dead.

After 10,000 of you wrote to your MPs asking them

to support our campaign, many politicians spoke

out in favour of improving farm animal transportation

regulations and enforcement. The Canadian Food

Inspection Agency (CFIA) also announced they

are more than doubling the fi nes for violations for

mistreated and improperly transported livestock –

the fi rst increase in over 10 years. This is proof that

WSPA’s Curb the Cruelty campaign is having an

impact – and you are a big part of that success!

History was made in Spain after years of

campaigning by WSPA and the local group PROU.

Thanks to the 165,000 supporters worldwide who

signed a petition demanding an end to bullfi ghting

(over 20,000 signatures were collected from

Canadians), the Catalonian Parliament voted to

make bullfi ghting illegal in Catalonia from 2012.

Bulls will now be saved from the cruelty of the

bullring because people like you spoke out.

More than 100,000 supporters have signed

our petition to stop the brutal practice of bear bile

farming – and our efforts are starting to pay off. We’re

one step closer to ending bear farming in South

Korea – for good. Following the introduction of a bill

in September, the South Korean government began

the process that could phase out this cruel industry.

This list is not comprehensive and lists only a portion of the programs WSPA funded or carried out in 2010.
