Welcome to PENPEX 2010

Welcome all to the Peninsula Philatelic Exhibition held at the Redwood City Community Activity Building. We are happy to continue to offer our friendly free show with a variety of dealers, exhibits, meetings, awards banquet, and silent auction. There are plenty of things to do: Our show theme is the 100th anniversary of the American Boy

Scouts. On Saturday, PENPEX will have a special Boy Scout cancel and on Sunday a special Mother Theresa cancel. Matching stamps and cachets are available for sale at the Table #16.

There are 19 dealers including the United States Postal Service and the United Nations.

The exhibit area shows off 58 frames of exquisite material along with a special 2-frame Boy Scout Stamp Collecting Merit Badge exhibit produced by Bill Barlow and Brian Jones. A professional panel of judges will award ribbons and prizes at the Awards Banquet on Saturday evening at Harry Hofbrau.

A Silent Auction will be open for viewing throughout the show. It will end on Sunday at 2:30 pm. Winners may collect their items at 3:45 pm.

Enjoy the food, refreshments, and beverages with fellow collectors. The snack bar is open Sat. 10 – 3pm and Sun. 10-2pm.

Check the schedule for group meetings that may be of interest to you. They are all open to the public.

Hey Kids!!! There is plenty for you to do. Make sure to visit the Youth Area at the far West end of the building for free stamps to all young collectors.

On behalf of the sponsoring club, Sequoia Stamp Club, and the Redwood City Activity Community Center, we thank you for attending our show, sharing your camaraderie, and furthering the hobby of stamp collecting. Celebrating Scouting

On July 27, 2010, in Fort A. P. Hill, Virginia, the Postal Service™ issued a 44-cent, Scouting commemorative stamp, designed by Derry Noyes, Washington, DC.

To create this original design, illustrator Craig Frazier, Mill Valley, California, depicted the images of two different scouts in clothing and accessories that are often part of the outdoor scouting experience — hats, packs, boots, and binoculars. At first glance, one sees the large silhouette of a scout peering through binoculars. Within this figure is another scout perched atop a mountain taking in the vista. “I wanted a level of discovery to be portrayed in the stamp itself,” Frazier recalls.

He continues, “The small figure and landscape indicate very hard, directional light coming from low on the horizon — either early morning or late afternoon. The sky has that pale blue to indigo transition that happens only at those two times of day.” (USPS Website)

Original artwork cachets are available at Table 16, along with many other original designs from Miriam Thurston.
