A musical institution, Blood Sweat & Tears has left an indelible mark on the American music scene since 1968. One of the greatest horn bands in the history of popular music, BS&Ts alumni roster reads like a Whos Who of the worlds greatest jazz and rock musicians.

Starting out in Greenwich Village in New York, the band won world-wide acclaim, becoming the first in many categories: first band to tour behind the Iron Curtain, first band to have 3 hit singles from the same record, first band to combine rock with jazz, etc.

Racking up sales in the millions, BS&T earned multiple gold albums there were no platinum plaques at that time and Grammy Awards, including the most prestigious of them all, Album of the Year.

    thursday lineup

    Blue yster Cult9:15 p.m. Amphitheater

Carolyn Wonderland has the goods. A triple threat with her diverse songwriting, soulful vocals, and guitar goddess status all featured on over twenty CDs, six of which are her releases she has a pedigree in this business thats hard to match. A bit of a renegade, she likes to incorporate elements of Blues, Country, Swing, Zydeco, Surf, Gospel, Soul, and some nights, maybe even a Cumbia into the musical mix.

For nearly three decades, Blue yster Cult has been thrilling fans of intelligent hard rock worldwide with powerful albums loaded with classic songs.

Upon the release of BCs self-titled debut album in 1972, the band was praised for its catchy-yet-heavy music and lyrics that could be provocative, terrifying, funny or ambiguous, often all in the same

song. BCs canon includes three stone-cold classic songs that will waft through the cosmos long after the sun has burned out: The truly haunting (Dont Fear) The Reaper from 1976s Agents of Fortune, the pummeling Godzilla from 1977s Spectres and the hypnotically melodic Burnin for You from 1981s Fire of Unknown Origin. Other notable BC songs include Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll, Then Came the Last Days of May, I Love the Night, In Thee, Veteran of the Psychic Wars, Dominance and Submission, Astronomy, Black Blade and Shooting Shark.

Their newest body of work Curse of the Hidden Mirror reflects the intense creative vision of BCs original core trio of vocalist/lead guitarist Donald Buck Dharma Roeser, vocalist/rhythm guitarist Eric Bloom and keyboardist/guitarist Allen Lanier and the longtime rhythm section of bass guitarist Danny Miranda and drummer Bobby Rondinelli (ex-Rainbow, ex-Black Sabbath).

BC has always maintained a relentless touring schedule that brings new songs and classics to original fans and, as Bloom puts it, teen-agers with green hair. We need more people with green hair at our shows!

    Brio

    Navasota Rio

    Omar & the Howlers8:30 p.m. Amphitheater

Six rockers make up the band, Navasota-Rio, an offspring of Navasota the 70s rock band from Houston, Texas. Navasota had a reputation for supercharged shows and dynamic musical ability as the original ABC/Dunhill Records

press release stated. And now Navasota-Rio not only follows in those footsteps, but takes the supercharge up a notch or two.

Since the 1970s, ballsy blues players, renegade country pickers, and raw-voiced rockers have mixed & matched their musical styles in Austins thriving club scene. And thats where Kent Omar Dykes holds court too. And its also where hes recorded his latest Ruf album, Boogie Man, working with some of his adopted hometowns most famous songwriters and musicians.

    Bret Michaels9:45 p.m. Amphitheater

As front man for the legendary rock band Poison, Michaels has sold 25 million records and scored an amazing 15 chartbusting Top 40 singles including Talk Dirty to Me, Something to Believe In, Nothing But a Good Time and the timeless #1 smash Every Rose Has its Thorn.

Poisons music has been featured in such big screen flicks as Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Grandmas Boy and Deuce Bigelow-European Gigolo. They continue to be one of the industrys top grossing concert attractions and their 2006 20 Years of Rock CD was a bona fide Top 20 gold smash. Poisons most recent CD is 2007s PoisonD an album of cover songs that have influenced the band members over the years.

Setting his musical sights beyond Poison, Michaels released his debut solo album Songs of Life in 2003 followed by the rootsy, Americana flavored sophomore record Freedom of Sound in 2005. The current release, Rock My World was released in June 2008 and features a collection of Bret Michaels solo songs that have been featured on the Rock Of Love television series.

Rock of Love with Bret Michaels has been a enormous ratings winner for Vh1. The series has became the highest rated series on Vh1 and consistently won its time slot when aired, including multiple airings. Michaels is currently filming a third installment of the series aptly titled Rock of Love Bus with Bret Michaels as the singer is taking the show on the road this time.

I would play music whether I made it or not, Michaels told a journalist in 2002 and its that commitment to his art that continues to keep him at the forefront of the entertainment industry.

Leon Russell played on, produced, arranged, and wrote some of rock and rolls most successful and important records. He organized and performed on Joe Cockers legendary Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. The Carpenters struck gold with Leons song Superstar, Ray Charles covered A Song For You, and B.B. King covered Hummingbird. After touring with the Rolling Stones, Leon increasingly focused on his solo

career. Many performers opened for Leon in this period including Elton John, ZZ Top, Willie Nelson and Charlie Daniels. After receiving his fourth gold album for Will O The Wisp, Leon teamed up with Willie Nelson and the dynamic duo achieved success with the One For The Road record. In the 1980s Leon toured with The New Grass Revival. Leon also toured with Edgar Winter for two years and shared the stage of Austin City Limits with him. During the 1990s, he released Anything Can Happen, which was produced by Leon & Bruce Hornsby. He followed that up with 1998s Hank Wilson Vol. 3: Legend In My Time and in 1999, Face In The Crowd. Leon Russell is pop musics most anonymous big shot.

Jimi Berg Band Jul & The Chrome Wheels

Its been a long and dusty, winding road for Austin singer/songwriter Guy Forsyth thats lead to a recent surge in praise over his dazzling live shows and his rich Americana roots sound. Forsyth (vocals, acoustic, electric, & slide guitar, harmonica, ukulele, singing saw), along with

Will Landin (bass/tuba) and Rob Hooper (drums/Cajon), bring a unique mixture of styles such as folk, rock, country, and Tin Pan Alley to create a sound thats as heterogeneous, raw and compelling as America itself.

Texas Hippie CoalitionUpon first glance of the Texas Hippie Coalition, one may come to the conclusion that they are an intimidating group that lives up to their nickname band of outlaws. However, looking a little closer at lead vocalist Big Dad Ritch, bassist John Exall, guitarists Randy Cooper and Crawfish,

and drummer Ryan Bennett; its hard to ignore that they are indeed much more than meets the eye. They are a loyal and talented band of brothers who consider themselves just as much family as they are band mates. Were Texas Born, American made, southern fried red dirt metal, Says Big Dad Ritch.

Gary P NunnGary P. Nunn enjoys a near folk status in Texas as he continues to sing the praises of the state, its culture, and its colorful characters. His fans come from all walks of life and range from small children who know the words to every song; to college students who have given up hard rock for the Texas two-step; to professionals who have never set foot in a honky-tonk; to octogenarian couples who still snuggle on the dance floor.

Bleu EdmondsonA relative unknown in 2000, Bleu wrote a letter to legendary producer Lloyd Maines asking him to take a chance and produce a record for him. Maines took the young artist under his wing, producing his debut Southland in 2001, and follow-up The Band Plays On in 2002. Maines unique ability to help craft a record played a major role in Bleus rise to prominence on the Texas Red Dirt scene, and behind the strength of hits 50 Dollars and a Flask Of Crown and Travellin Man Bleus place was cemented as a regular on the Texas music charts, while word of mouth of the bands live shows spread and ignited the groundswell that continues today.

    John Gaar Band

The kaleidoscopic-country sound the band has become known for rages on. While Russellssongs move the band into beautiful and unfamiliar territory, Smith succeeds in keeping Noble Creatures, the bands newest album, close to home with what he calls, solid Gourds grooves that are sure to be new live favorites and

are guaranteed to serve as the soundtrack to barbecues and house parties from Austin to god-knows-where!

With their 80 years plus combined experience, the band John has put together will wow you with a unique sound that is unmatched today. From soulful, gitty lyrics and harmonized background vocals to the tight rythmic beat of the bass and drums, you will find your crowd dancing in the streets or at least tapping in their seats! If you are looking for that new, cutting-edge, yet traditional, sound of soulful, guitar-lickin blues then the John Gaar Band cant be beat.

    LAWS

    54

By Robert FillaFor all our out-of-state guests, the Republic of Texas Biker Rally wishes to send a hearty welcome and wish you safe riding while enjoying our great state. And for any riders unfamiliar with Texas motorcycle laws, heres a quick rundown of current regulations.

hELMETS: A DOT approved helmet is required for all motorcyclists. An exception to this stipulation exempts anyone 21 years and older from wearing a helmet if they have successfully completed a motorcycle operator training and safety course or they are covered by a health insurance plan. Proof of either is mandated by law but rarely requested by an officer. In addition, SB 1967 was signed into law last fall and reads, A peace officer may not stop or detain a person who is the operator of or a passenger on a motorcycle for the sole purpose of determining whether the person has successfully completed the motorcycle operator training and safety course or is covered by a health insurance plan.

LicEnSing: A Class M motorcycle endorsement on your drivers license is mandatory along with valid insurance and a current vehicle inspection sticker. A copy of your registration may go a long ways in avoiding prolonged roadside stops.

EQuiPMEnT: By state law, an operator cannot carry a passenger unless the bike is designed to carry more than one person, which means having both a passenger seat and pegs. (Another new law that also went into effect last year carries an age restriction, stating that no child under the age of five years old can ride on a motorcycle unless that child is seated in a sidecar. But that shouldnt be a problem for Rally attendees since the Republic of Texas carries its own age restriction 18 and older only.) Texas designates that a bike may not be operated at any time unless at least one headlight is illuminated (except for bikes manufactured before 1975). Of course the bike must have both an operating taillight and brake light along with a horn. Side-mounted or vertical side-mounted license plates are generally not a cause for alarm while at least one mirror is mandatory. Texas law states A motor vehicle shall be equipped with a muffler in good working condition that continually operates to prevent excessive or unusual noise. But if you suppress any outbursts of throttle fever. drag pipes will rarely get you pulled over.

Behavior: Safety and common sense is most imperative during the ROT Rally and burnouts, wheelies and other stunts will not be tolerated on any Austin city street. The Austin PD can be most friendly (especially during ROT). Lets do our best to keep em that way.

Ride safe and have way too much fun.

    2010 texas Motorcycle laws

    By Robert Filla

Texas is home to hot bikes, hot women and hot parties. Unfortunately its also home to some damn hot temperatures, especially during June and the Republic of Texas Biker Rally. So here are some suggestions on maintaining your cool without quenching the party.

Most important, keep hydrated. Since youre fully exposed while on a motorcycle, dehydration is your biggest enemy. Initial signs and symptoms of mild dehydration begin when the body has lost only approximately 2-percent total fluids. Ten-percent and greater is often fatal. Excessive alcohol and caffeine consumption adds to the problem by flushing the system of vital nutrients and salts. So drink lots of water.

Extended time in the sun and prolonged exposure to the wind causes an accelerated wicking effect and robs the body of fluid reserves. Wear light-colored jeans and a long-sleeve shirt while riding. The colors will help reflect the sun while the long sleeves will help retain fluids. And 100-percent cotton breathes much better than synthetics unless they are specially engineered for riding.

To aid in staying cool, a wet bandana (or even a wet shirt if needed) can aid in keeping your core temperature at reasonable levels.

Low-top boots allow better airflow than those impressive 13 stomper models. Save the taller boots for evening rides.

While wearing a helmet is always a safer bet, ditch the full-face version for something with better ventilation, a or half-helmet.

Chaps in the summer are generally more of a fashion statement than a need for protection. The black leather absorbs unwanted heat while the multiple layers of clothing trap it inside once its there. So unless your chaps are white and youre not wearing anything underneath, opt for alternative safety clothing.

Staying on the citys freeway system and rolling normally presents a much cooler ride than the available surface roads with its stop-and-go traffic. Not always, but usually.

While removing your windshield for increased airflow is an option, with temperatures often in the high 90s, it can be like riding into a blast furnace. A windscreen offers the only protection from the wind buffeting your body and without it the wicking affect of much-needed liquids from your person increases dramatically. Be your own judge slow riding through Austins maze of city streets, take it off if possible. Riding the outlying countryside, leave it on. You wont be nearly as tired or thirsty.

If possible, carry a bottle of water that can be easily accessed (even while riding) during your explorations of this great section of Texas. Theres plenty of time for beer at the party after the ride.

While at the Rally, take advantage of the events Cool Zone, a climate-controlled vendor tent and a great place to chill. If you or a friend experience dehydration problems, the Rallys First Aid Station is located in the covered vendor mall near the Cowboy Bar. Dont wait until its too late this is Texas Heat.

Stay cool ride long enjoy much.

is the oldest major barbecue restaurant in Texas continuously owned by the same family since 1932. Thats a long time to perfect your trade. Their motto is 8 Days a Week and since they are only closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas, its easy to understand their logic. As co-owners Norma and Edgar Black say, Its easier to remember when were closed than when were open. Its simple according to Edgar, You just need some salt, pepper, the right wood and a few family secrets (that he wouldnt reveal). Their rich-flavored brisket cooks for 24 hours and has been recognized by numerous media outlets including Texas Monthly magazine, Gourmet, Travel Holiday, Business Week and the Travel Channel during their Barbecue Paradise show. And its hard to argue with the experts especially when theyre not native Texans. Congratulations to the Black family for continuing the tasty tradition of this Texas staple.

so now, get out and ride and enjoy a taste of lone star history!

66 where theres smoke... theres BBQby Robert Filla

Texas stubbornly clings to its place in barbecue history with claims of perfecting the smoky goodness of beef brisket and developing the original Cowboy BBQ. One of the most noted BBQ cities in the state is Lockhart, the Official bbQ capitol of Texas. While three Lockhart BBQ locations are listed in our Self-Guided Tours section of this pamphlet, Ride #6 Hot on the BBQ Trail one missed the list due to space limitations.

kreuz Market began as a grocery store and meat market in 1900. Due to the lack of decent refrigeration, Kreuz began smoking some of their unsold cuts in an effort to save them from being

tossed out. Soon the barbecue side of the store overtook the grocery side. And they proudly serve only BBQ with a sign stating: No BBQ Sauce, No Forks, No Salads, No Credit Cards, No Kidding. They are located at 619 N. Colorado.

Another BBQ joint thats worth checking out is the Taylor caf, just up the road from the ROT Rally in Taylor, Texas. Located in the towns oldest building, the Taylor Caf has been serving up slow cooked meats for over 50 years with a honky-tonk vibe.

Located at 101 N. Main, potato salad and beans are also on the menu along with the traditional beef, sausage, ribs and chicken.

Driftwood, Texas is about 13 miles west of Austin and is the home of Salt Lick bbQ. It was constructed 30 years ago on the ranch where the owner was born. The Austin Chronicle named

Salt Lick as Best of Austin BBQ from 1999-2002. Located at 18300 FM 1826, the food is so good theyve had to erect a sign limiting your stay to 1.5 hours.

Although each smoke enhanced eatery mentioned in our #6 Tour Map and this article features only the best of Texas, in the end, there can be only one. And this years winner of the coveted ROT Pit of Perfection is blacks barbecue in Lockhart. Blacks

Constructed in the 1880s, gruene hall is the oldest dance hall in Texas. More than just a honky-tonk, Gruene Hall has evolved into an institution with

legendary performers including Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Joe Ely and Charlie and Bruce Robinson. Plus the beer is frosty and reasonably priced. Its located at 1281 Gruene Road in New Braunfels.

The Lone Star Float house is a colorful and eclectic combination offering river tubing, rafting, killer burgers and some of the coldest beer around. Based at 7430 River Road, this popular biker hangout has a third story patio that overlooks the Guadalupe River and features great views of the surrounding cliffs.

Luckys kitchen & cocktails is a full-service bar and restaurant located in Canyon Lake. Their biker friendliness is exhibited by their weekly Thursday night Bike Nights. You can find them at 18100 FM 306.

Just down the road, the Shadetree Saloon & grill is on Hwy 281 about mile south of FM 306 and just north of Spring Branch, Texas. A true biker bar in every respect, the Shadetree remains one the favorites of local riders.

Although Fredericksburg is packed with excellent eateries, The Auslander biergarten and Restaurant on Main Street remains at the top of our list due to its extensive selection of beers, the most diverse in town. They also offer authentic German cuisine and live music Thursday through Saturday.

The Willow City Loop has been dubbed one of the most famous rides in Texas with its two-lane strip of asphalt winding through tree shrouded valleys, across canyons and creeks and meadows filled with wildflowers. The knot in the Loop Saloon only adds to the areas charm. About 70 miles west of Austin at the intersection of FM 1323 and TX 16, Knot in the Loop features a 13-foot granite bar, four pool tables and cold beer and wine.

Your tour wouldnt be complete without a stop at two of the Lone Star States more noted ghost towns, Luckenbach and Albert. Located just a few miles from each other (Luckenbach on FM 1376 just south of Hwy 290 and Albert on FM 1623 just south of Hwy 290), they share a common history, are both favorite biker watering holes and exude ample amounts of Texan color.

The Waterhole Saloon offers live music, free food, horseshoes, pool tables, darts, and fun 7 days a week in a low-brow, honky-tonk style. 5244 Hwy 71 East Del Valle, TX 78617 512-247-5119www.waterholesaloon.com
