NEW ERA FOR OLIVET VOLLEYBALLSET TO BEGIN IN 2010

2

A new era is set to begin for the Olivet College volleyball program.

Lynnette Moster is ready to embark her first season as head coach.

Moster began her duties in time to work with her team during its

practices last spring.

“I am optimistic about our chances to have a good season,” said

Moster. “The players showed a lot of great play during the spring,

and I am hopeful it can translate into winning matches this fall. If we

improve at the rate we did in those nine practices during the spring,

we will be a great team by the end of the season.”

The good news is seven letterwinners from last year ’s team are

back. Five players, who played at the junior varsity level last year,

have also returned. When you add those 12 players to a group of

eight recruits, Moster has plenty of options to fill her varsity squad in

2010.

The most returning talent is the front row players. Senior Ellen

Schulz (Freeland) and sophomores Sam Gibson (Battle Creek/Harper

Creek) and Melanie Merchant (St. Joseph) were the top offensive

threats in 2009. Junior Heather Nicklaw (Springport) has been on

the junior varsity team the last two seasons, and is going to get a

chance to contribute at the varsity level this year.

Schulz is in her final season in a Comet uniform. Over the last

three years, she has had 652 kills and 212 blocks. A 2009 Academic

All-America® selction, she has also registered 65 career service aces.

As freshmen, Gibson had 124 kills, while Merchant ranked first on

the team with 232 kills and 25 aces.

“With Ellen, Sam and Melanie, we have a strong nucleus of

hitters,” Moster said. “Each one will contribute to our success in

different ways. Ellen does a great job attacking at the middle of the

net. Sam is an outside hitter with some crazy shots. Melanie is a left-

handed hitter who can just pound the ball down from all over the court,

particularly at the right-side. Heather is going to graduate next May,

so she will be playing her final year of volleyball for us this fall.

Senior Jenessa Hicks (Union City) is back for her final season

at Olivet. She has been the starting setter in almost every match of

her collegiate career, recording 2,065 assists. Sophomore Cassie

McDonald (Battle Creek/Pennfield) saw action on the varsity team

last year, and will get an opportunity at the varsity level this year.

“I am expecting great things from Jenessa this year,” said Moster.

“She wants to end her collegiate career on a positive note and we will

do what we can to give her that.”

Junior Mallory Schug (Climax/Galesburg Augusta) has been the

libero in most of her career matches at Olivet, collecting 612 digs.

She has also played in the front row as an outside hitter.

“Entering the season, I am not sure where Mallory will play,” said

Moster. “She has been a part of the defense in the past, but she can

also attack the ball. We are going to play her where we have a need.”

Senior Megan McCarty (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) is a returning

defensive specialist. She has played in 30 career matches and

recorded 154 digs. Senior Morgan Iloncaie (Port Huron/Imlay City)

has returned for her final year. After transferring prior to the start of

the 2009 season from St. Clair County Community College, she saw

action in 18 matches and had 154 digs.

The recruiting class consists of two junior college transfers,

another t ransfer and f ive f i rs t -year p layers. Jordy Bergeron

(Muskegon/Mona Shores) played two years at Muskegon Community

College, while Shelby Mitchell (Pinckney) was at Lansing Community

College. Originally from Michigan, sophomore Tori King (Ash Grove,

Mo.) transferred to Olivet from Central Methodist (Mo.) University.

In addition, senior Sarah Caldwell (Bronson) has been at Olivet

for her first three years and is going to play volleyball for the first

time in 2010.

The true freshmen are Hope Burnham (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo

Christian), Chelsea Meyer (Sherwood/Union City), Kaitlyn Salhaney

(Caledonia/East Kentwood), Allison Stockmeyer (Leslie/Mason) and

Megan VanderVlucht (McBain). “We are extremely excited about each

of our new players and seeing how they will contribute to the program

this fall,” said Moster.

Page 5: 2010 Olivet College Volleyball

Lynnette Moster begins her first season as

the head volleyball coach at Olivet in 2010.

Prior to joining the Olivet staff, Moster served

as an assistant volleyball coach at Georgetown

Univers i ty for the last two years. Pr ior to

Georgetown, she spent one year as an assistant coach at University

at Albany.

Moster was a four-year letterwinner at Georgia Inst i tute of

Technology from 2001-04. An outside hitter, she was a three-time

American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American. Moster

also earned 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Player of the Year,

was a three-time first-team All-ACC selection, and named the 2002-

03 Georgia Tech Female student-athlete of the year and 2002 ACC

Tournament MVP. She is the Yellow Jackets’ all-time leader in kills

(1,849) and ranks among the career leaders in digs (1,456), service

aces (193) and hitting percentage (.308).

Moster was a member of the United States national team as an

outside hitter and libero. She trained under the instruction of former

head coach, Jenny Lang Ping, who led the USA to a silver medal at

the 2008 Olympics. Moster also played professionally in Puerto Rico

with Gigantes de Carolina.

A native of Liberty, Ind., Moster earned a bachelor ’s degree in

management from Georgia Tech in 2006.

Mike Loveless is in his third season as an

assistant volleyball coach. In addition to his

coaching duties, he is a claims representative for

State Farm Insurance in Kalamazoo.

Prior to joining the Olivet staff, Loveless was a

volleyball coach in Marshall Public Schools the last 18 years, including

the last five years as the head varsity coach at the high school.

Loveless lives in Marshall with wife, Gina. They have three children,

Brittany, Kameron and Alex.
