Sawe, Rooney and Burger named to all-regional team McNeese State’s Joshua Sawe, David Rooney and Tinette Burger were named to the south central all-regional team. The top 25 finish-ers at the regional meet were named to the squad for both men and women.

McNeese State’s David Rooney (pictured above) ran one of the best races in his career in finishing 58th at the 2009 NCAA men’s meter cross country champion-ship. The Cowboy sophomore from Dublin, Ireland, posted a 30:32.6 clocking over the 10,000 meter course and it was the highest finish ever by a Cowboy. Team-mate Joshua Sawe ran 152nd with a 31:24.1 effort. The individual champion was Samuel Chelanga of Liberty with a 28:41.3. Rooney was also the top Southland Conference runner to finish the race as Lamar’s Francis Kasagule placed 86th. “He ran a fantastic race,” McNeese coach Bren-don Gilroy said of Rooney. “He ran smart and he had a good pace all the way around.” Sawe had entered the race as the Cowboys top performer but he went out too quick and then had trou-ble keeping up. Gilory said that the Kenya runner was in the top 10 after one mile of the race. Rooney and Sawe were the top two runners from a Louisiana school to finish. They were the first Cowboys to participate in the NCAA championship race since the late 1970s.

Dr. Robert HebertUniversity President

Tommy McClellandDirector of Athletics

Dr. Robert Hebert is president of McNeese State University and is in his 23rd year as such. He is a native of Meaux, LA, is a graduate of Louisiana-Lafayette and holds his Ph.D from Florida State. He is married to the former Lilly Ann Vincent and the couple has four sons - Greg, Chris, Gerry and Edward - all of whom are graduates of McNeese State and are physi-cians. The University has provided, for over a half century, service to its community and state and to the students who seek to secure their future through higher educa-tion. McNeese opened its doors in 1939 as Lake Charles Junior College and as a division of the Louisiana State University system. Name changes later were made to John McNeese Junior College (1940) and to McNeese State (1950) when the university separated from LSU. In 1970 the school obtained its present name of McNeese State University. The university presently has an enroll-ment of 8,413 and has over 300 fulltime faculty members, half of whom possess the doctoral degree. The university is located on 580 acres in south Lake Charles. McNeese was named after John McNeese, a pioneer Southwest Louisiana educator who served as the first superinten-dent of education in Calcasieu Parish. He was also a cattle rancher and was renowned for making the first cattle drive across the Sabine River, thus the school’s nickname of Cowboys.• established in 1939, McNeese State has an enrollment of 8,471. The university is located in Lake Charles, a city with a popu-lation of 80,000. The city is located in the Southwest corner of the state, 30 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico and 30 miles east of the Texas-Louisiana border.• McNeese’s schools of study are the Arts, Sciences, Engineering/Technology, Nurs-ing, Education, Business and the Graduate School. The school produces more teachers annually than any other university in the state.• In 1993, the Pulitzer Prize for fiction was awarded to Dr. Robert Olen Butler, then a member of the university’s Department of Languages.

Tommy McClelland is the seventh athletic director in McNeese State’s 70 year history and he has “made a differ-ence” in his three years. The Basile native and Northwestern State graduate (under graduate and gradu-ate degrees), has formulated many plans that have brought McNeese athletics to communities in Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana. In the short time he has served as the athletic director, more than $2.5 million in renovation and construction has been applied to the facilities with the turfing of Cowboy Stadium field and the completion of the Hodges Street field house. The renovation of the baseball facili-ties - field, stands, dressing rooms, field-house - was also completed and construc-tion is underway on the new $8 million Jack Doland fieldhouse. In the summer of 2008, McClelland was named as one of Southwest Louisi-ana’s “top 10 under 40” business leaders by the local magazine the Times of Lake Charles. A football and track letterman during his collegiate days at Northwestern State, McClelland is married to the former Jes-sica Stokes of Garrison, TX.

McNeese State University is located in Lake Charles, LA, a city with a romatic past and a promising future. Situated in Southwest Louisiana and only 30 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, the area’s scenic beauty and abundant natural resources - with waterways playing a predominate role - first lured settlers. Lake Charles was once a haven for pirates like Jean Lafitte who hid contra-band along the labyrinth of backwater and bayous. The city’s beginning can be traced to the 1790s when the first French set-tlers came to carve homesteads out of the dense pine forests. Barthlemy LeBleu established the first home six miles east of Lake Charles (now known as LeBleu settlement). Charles Sallier married LeBleu’s daughter and in 1803 built the first log cabin on the shell beach of Lake Charles. The surrounding area was named after the Indian Chief “Crying Eagle” which in French became Calcasieu, that name today designating the river that runs on the edge of the city and up the middle of the parish. After the Civil War, Lake Charles became a lumber town with a healthy schooner trade, swamped with orders for lumber to help rebuild the war torn South. When lumber began to wane, the city opened a deep water port in 1923, paving the way for industrial development. Today this link to the Gulf accomo-dates up to 13 ships at a time. Lake Charles is a city of 80,000 diverse people but the influence of the French Acadians is seen in local cusine, language and customs. In many of the small towns and bayous near Lake Charles, Cajun Fench is still spoken. The city is a center for international commerce with its port, abundant oil and gas resources, a sprawling petro-chemical complex and an aviation facility. It has also become a favorite vacation port with riverboat casinos bordering its waters. The city is set in the midst of a sportsman paradise - fishing (saltwater and fresh), hunting (duck, geese, deer, squirrel, rabbit, turkey), shrimping and crab-bing are staples.

The MCNEESE HALL OF FAME is located in the Doland Fieldhouses. The most recent inductee from track and field was distance runner Sita Waru (pictured at right) last year. Other former track and field athletes in the Hall are Bobby Barnes (inducted 1993), Leonard Chisholm (2007), Brian Cooper (1999), Keri Ange Guillory (2007), Bob Hayes (2000), Craig Henry (1998), Bill Jongbloed (1987), Fanahan McSweeney (1997), Dicky Morgan (1990), Fred Norris (1996), Pat O’Callaghan (2005), Ruble Scarborough (2008) and Kevin Toth (2003).
