AnnualReport2010 1

Dear Friends of Nursing:

The fiscal year ending 30 June 2010 included the closing of a Sigma Theta Tau International biennium and the start of a new biennium, which marks the beginning of my tenure as Foundation board chair.

The Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation for Nursing board and its Fellows Committee members celebrated 29 new Fellows and two new Pillar Society donors at the Heritage Society dinner during the 40th Biennial Convention in November 2009. The convention launched the Nurse Faculty Mentored Leadership program, supported with a grant from The Elsevier Foundation. The Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy, supported with a grant from The John A. Hartford Foundation, celebrated the completion of its first cohort. And, the Maternal-Child Health Nurse Leadership Academy completed its third cohort while initiating plans for adapting the model in South Africa, both with the ongoing support of Johnson & Johnson.

The conclusion of the US $3.5 million Brick Paver Campaign for Nursing Excellence benefiting the leadership, scholarship and 21st century permanent funds at the Foundation was celebrated at the convention. Contributions to those funds have resulted in a 45 percent increase in awarding research grants and leadership education grants over the past four years. And yet, our need to raise additional donations grows annually because there are still grant requests from nurses around the world we are unable to fund.

The Foundation board is grateful to all of its donors for supporting nursing scholarship and leadership. We are pleased that annual donor retention increased from 40 percent to 43 percent this past fiscal year. We ask all of you to continue to support the growing need for nursing leadership and research grants, while inviting your friends and colleagues to join you as a Foundation donor. Our combined donations will greatly impact nursing’s future.

With gratitude for your support of nursing,

Joanne Olson, PhD, RN2009-11 Foundation Board Chair

US$3.5millionpavercampaignsuccesscelebratedThe completion of the US $3.5 million Brick Paver Campaign for Nursing Excellence, launched in 2003, was celebrated during the convention with a reception in the Joan K. Stout board room at STTI headquarters. As a result of contributions made during the convention, the goal was exceeded and more than US $3.5 million in cash and pledges were raised from members, chapters, foundations, corporations and friends of nursing.

Foundation Board Chair Marcia Stanhope and STTI President-Elect Karen Morin thanked donors and commended the committees and task forces that assisted in increasing the Foundation’s permanent funds benefiting nursing scholarship, leadership and STTI’s future. Guests were able to walk through the garden and take photos of their pavers.

HeritageSocietymembersenjoyeleganteveningMore than 150 major donors and their guests attended the 2009 Heritage Society dinner at a private club on the circle in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, where they were honored for their extraordinary commitment to the Foundation. At the start of the dinner, 2007-09 Foundation Chair Marcia Stanhope and Foundation board member and Fellows Committee Chair Joanne Olson welcomed 29 new Virginia Henderson, Sigma Theta Tau and Billye Brown Fellows and two new Pillar Society donors. In addition, they shared how the Foundation impacted nursing and health care during the past biennium through research grants, leadership education grants and membership subsidies.

Throughout the evening, donors and their guests enthusiastically participated in a silent auction raising more than US $2,300 in support. Auction items were generously contributed by Heritage Society donors and included teddy bears with hand-stitched bibs, a handmade purse and an autographed copy of Why Retire? authored by STTI Past President Fay Bower.

More than 100 biennial convention attendees rose early Sunday through Tuesday and raised more than US $3,800 for nursing research when they participated in group exercises sponsored by Indiana State University College of Nursing, Health, and Human Services.

FoundationfortheFutureofAgingfundsnewtooltoassessnurses’geriatricknowledgeDeveloped with support from the Foundation for the Future of Aging, the Geriatric Nursing Knowledge Assessment (GNKA) tool evaluates the RN’s knowledge in nine major competency areas common to geriatric nursing; identifies their strengths and areas for improvement; and recommends resources designed to ensure quality care and life for patients and residents. GNKA is currently the only assessment available specifically designed for long-term care nurses.

According to the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing, less than 1 percent of all registered nurses (RNs) are certified as gerontological nurses and only 3 percent of advanced practice nurses are certified in geriatrics. “The Foundation for the Future of Aging is committed to addressing workforce-related issues as America faces an acute shortage of registered nurses and other caregivers just as the demand for skilled care is on the rise,” said Jan Thayer, board president of the Foundation for the Future of Aging. “We are delighted that our first grant has helped the dedicated nurse educators and nursing professionals.”

GNKA is one of several products and services being developed by STTI’s Center for Nursing Excellence in Long-Term Care™ in collaboration with experts from the Hartford Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence, skilled nursing facilities, national providers, trade associations and geriatric consumer groups. The Center’s mission is to support the knowledge, professional development and leadership growth of nurses who provide care to older adults.

TheElsevierFoundationsupportsglobalsummitonnursefacultymigrationTwenty-one expertsfrom12 countries convened near Geneva, Switzerland, in late June 2010 to explore current patterns, types and causal and contributing factors of global nurse faculty migration, a phenomenon where nursing faculty leave their country of origin to work elsewhere. The summit was convened by the International Council of Nurses and STTI with US $100,000 in support from The Elsevier Foundation.

Expert contributors representing academe, policy bodies, professional associations, government agencies, trade organizations, migration and economics identified reasons faculty members pursue opportunities in a country other than their own. They cited reasons such as higher pay, career opportunities, better working conditions and provisions for post-basic education.

“The ability to educate more highly skilled nurses is critical to improving health care quality across the globe,” said David Ruth, executive director of The Elsevier Foundation. “Only by taking these steps to understand how migration contributes to the nurse faculty shortage can we truly begin to affect change. We are proud to be at the forefront of this initiative.”

This was the first time an interdisciplinary group of leaders proactively addressed the critical need for qualified nursing faculty globally.

Maternal-ChildHealthLeadershipAcademymodeltobepilotedinSouthAfricaWhile the third Maternal-Child Health (MCH) Leadership Academy, supported by Johnson & Johnson, presented its posters and celebrated the completion of its cohort during the 2009 Biennial Convention, maternal-child health and midwifery nurse leaders from Africa also met to explore adapting and implementing the Academy model on their continent to improve maternal-child health outcomes. This meeting was hosted with support from Johnson & Johnson and resulted in a planning grant from Johnson & Johnson to Sigma Theta Tau International Foundation for Nursing to develop a South Africa Academy pilot in late 2010 through early 2011.

Maternal-ChildHealthLeadershipAcademyfourthcohortreadiestolaunchWith funding from Johnson & Johnson Corporate Contributions, STTI’s International Leadership Institute brought the 2010-2011 MCH faculty group together in March 2010 to select 20 mentees and 20 mentors from the U.S., Canada and Switzerland. The faculty also worked on continuing to improve the Academy curriculum using feedback from previous programs and discussed ways in which to expand and enhance the research, evaluation and reporting process.

The Maternal-Child Health Leadership Academy is an intense and career-changing experience for nurses committed to leading health care practice changes to improve the quality of health care for childbearing women and children up to five years old. The 18-month curriculum includes face-to-face meetings; online discussion forums; and regular, structured communication between and among fellows, mentors and expert faculty consultants. Upon completion of the program, participants will be recognized and celebrated during the 2011 Biennial Convention in Grapevine, Texas, USA. Mentees will present a poster describing their leadership journey and the clinical impact of their MCH project.

STTI’sInternationalLeadershipInstitutelaunchessecondgeriatricacademyclassIn June 2010 and with support from The John A. Hartford Foundation and additional support from Hill-Rom and Northwest Health Foundation, STTI’s International Leadership Institute launched the second cohort of the highly successful Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy (GNLA). GNLA has become a premier opportunity for nurses dedicated to influencing policy and geriatric health outcomes. The 2010-11 class represents 12 states.

The Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy experience helped me develop the leadership skills and knowledge to advance the care of older adults through innovation. As a result, I am a much better mentor, my employer has benefited and I gained the confidence to pursue a PhD. — GNLA Fellow Kathy Wright, MSN, GCNS-BC, Summa Akron City Hospital, USA

GNLA was developed in partnership with the Hartford Foundation’s Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence and is designed to build geriatric nurse leadership capacity in health care settings serving older adults across the United States. Mentors and fellows work for 18 months through this intense and comprehensive leadership curriculum. Activities include face-to-face meetings; online discussion forums;

and regular, structured communication between and among fellows, mentors and expert faculty leaders.

Upon completion of the program, participants will be recognized and celebrated during the 2011 Biennial Convention in Grapevine, Texas, USA. Fellows will present a poster describing their leadership journey and the institutional impact of their GNLA project.

It’s amazing to see how much these new nursing faculty grow and change in such a short period of time. Not only are they developing the transformational skills they need to be leaders in nursing education, their projects are resulting in innovative teaching pedagogies, evaluation methods and curriculum design which will transform nursing education in the 21st century. — NFMLD Mentor Carol L. Huston, MSN, MPA, DPA, FAAN, STTI Past President and Director,

School of Nursing, California State University, Chico, USA

At no time has it been so important to develop leaders in nursing education. NFMLD provides opportunity for an emerging leader to work on a project with an experienced mentor to hone leadership skills while transforming the educational system in the leader’s school of nursing and better prepare nurses to meet future health care needs. — NFMLD Mentor Diane M. Billings, EdD, RN, FAAN, Chancellor’s Professor Emeritus,

Indiana University School of Nursing, USA

Since starting NFMLD, I have taken on new leadership roles -- becoming the faculty president for our department as well as the president of our STTI chapter. I now see teaching, leadership and scholarship as independent dimensions of my faculty role. I am getting great support from my mentor who has encouraged me to plan strategically and see how specific steps fit into the larger picture. I am working with our department chair to develop a faculty retreat that will support our efforts at curricular redesign.

— NFMLD Scholar Michael Clark, DrNP, CRNP, Assistant Professor, Department of Nursing, College of Health Professions and Social Work, Temple University, USA

With 2009 funding from The Elsevier Foundation, STTI’s International Leadership Institute brought together participants from 16 states and 28 universities for the new Nurse Faculty Mentored Leadership Development (NFMLD) program workshop conducted in April 2010 in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. In addition to the workshop, mentors will be engaged for 18 months via online discussion forums and regular communication between scholars, mentors and expert faculty leaders.

Research shows that new nurse faculty members who have worked successfully with a mentor have higher job satisfaction and increased promotions and mobility than those without mentors. Mentored nurse faculty members are also more productive in obtaining competitive grants, leading professional organizations and publishing in scholarly books and journals articles.

Each participant was selected in a competitive process and was required to design a team-based project to improve nursing education. Project titles include: Learning in Simulated Environments, Overcoming the Evidence-Based Practice Gap and Integrating Gerontology Content into APN Curriculum.

Upon completion of the program, participants will be recognized and celebrated during the 2011 Biennial Convention in Grapevine, Texas, USA. Scholars will present a poster describing their leadership journey and the institutional impact of their NFMLD project.

Helpingnursesheal, leadandlearn…Contributions to the Foundation made it possible for members to receive support to attend the 2009 congress and convention, renew their membership and conduct research. Each year the Foundation receives more requests for support from around the world. And, each year, those who receive support want donors to know how much their generosity is appreciated. The grant you gave really encouraged me to take one step further. This encourages me to present the study approved for oral presentation at convention. It means a lot and gives me the strength to move ahead.

— Hasina Amin Panjwani, RN, BScN, Pakistan, 2009 Convention Leadership Education Grant Recipient

This leadership grant was very important because I improved my knowledge on evidence-based practice. As a professor at the University of Sao Paulo, I can spread this knowledge and experience to nursing students from different areas. — Renata Cristina Silveria, RN, PhD, Brazil,

2009 Research Congress Leadership Education Grant Recipient

Assessment Technologies Institute representatives Robert Schroeder and Sheryl Sommer were on hand during the 2009 biennial convention to present the 2009 Educational Assessment Nursing Research Grant to Patsy H. Fasnacht (center), PhD, CNE, faculty coordinator for the Division of Nursing, Lancaster General College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

If there is an inadvertent error, we apologize and ask that you call the Foundation at 888.634.7575 so we may revise our records accordingly.

Having become an honor society member as a graduate nurse some 20 years ago, I have personally benefited from leadership development opportunities afforded to me through membership and scholarship support. It is incumbent on all of us to pay this wonderful gift forward by supporting an organization that has done so much for us.

— Ken Dion, RN, MSN/MBA, President & CEO, Decision Critical, Inc., Virginia Henderson Fellow, Billye Brown Fellow, USA

“It is my belief that if every nurse would participate in giving small amounts it will go a long way in improving funding.”
