The Coastal Carolina University football squad battled against its second-ever Football Bowl Subdivision opponent but came up on the short end of an 18-0 loss at Kent State, Sept. 3. This was the season opener for both teams and the shutout was just the second in school history for the Chanticleers. The first half was a bend-but-don't-break effort by the Coastal Carolina defense, as the group managed to keep Kent State off the scoreboard and to just 1-of-8 on third-down conversions and a failed fourth-down conversion. The only scoring came after a Marcus Lott interception deep in Chanticleer territory gave Coastal Carolina the ball on its own 1. On the next play, the Chants failed to get the run out of the end zone and gave up the safety to make it 2-0 Golden Flashes with 4:36 to go in the first half. Late in the second quarter, Kent State drove down to the Coastal Carolina 6-yard line with just 16 seconds remain-ing in the period. Kicker Freddy Cortez had his kick smothered by Josh Norman up the middle and the ball bounded to Dominique Davenport, who returned it to the KSU 26 with two ticks left on the clock. However, Justin Durham's 43-yard attempt sailed wide left and the halftime margin remained 2-0 Golden Flashes. Kent State put itself in good field position after stopping Coastal Carolina on its first drive of the second half, forcing a punt from the Coastal Carolina 5-yard line. Punter Ben Erdman hit it 33 yards but Eugene Jarvis returned it 33 yards back to the 5. Two plays later, Andre Flowers went around the left in and got the ball inside the pylon for the score. Cortez hit the extra point and Kent State extended its lead to 9-0 with 7:49 remaining in the third. Jarvis again made an impact in the special teams, returning a punt early in the fourth quarter from the Kent State 42 to the Coastal Carolina 41-yard line. From there, it took just three plays for Jarvis to rumble into the end zone from four yards out and the PAT extended the lead to 16-0 with 11:57 to play. A bad snap by Jamie Perkinson on a punt went over Erdman's head and through the back of the end zone for a safety with 3:42 to go and made the final score 18-0. The Golden Flashes outgained the Chants 344-185, including 143 yards on the ground for KSU to just 78 for Coastal Carolina. The Chants' defense did hold KSU to just 1-of-13 on third down conversions, but Coastal Carolina's offense only converted on 2-of-14 third-down chances. Quarterback Zach MacDowall was 12-for-26 for 107 yards and one interception while freshman Jeremy Height led the Chants with 14 carries for 55 yards. Redshirt-junior Marquel Willis had a team-best three catches for 37 yards. Norman was among the leaders defensively with six solo tackles, one interception and the blocked kick. Kent State was paced by All-MAC running back Eugene Jarvis with 27 rushes for 141 yards and one score. Quarterback Giorgio Morgan was 21-for-35 for 201 yards and had two inteceptions, while Tyshon Goode posted six receptions for 84 yards. Jarvis also impacted the game with five returns for 77 yards.

The Coastal Carolina University football team returned to Brooks Stadium and opened their home slate with a 24-17 victory over the visiting Monmouth Hawks, Sept. 12. Monmouth got in the end zone first late in the first quarter, set up by linebacker Brian Brikowski’s 53-yard interception return to the Coastal 5-yard line. The Chanticleer defense was tough, but couldn’t withstand a 4th-and-1 plunge from David Sinisi to put the Hawks on the board. Eric McCutchen’s point after was good to give the visitors a 7-0 lead with 3:02 to go in the opening period. The Chanticleers then brought it back even on their next drive, going 77 yards in 13 plays over 6:18. Quarterback Zach MacDowell capped off the drive with a 50-yard pass to wide receiver Chris Presley, making this his first-career catch. Justin Durham’s point after was good to tie the game at seven with 11:40 to go in the second period. Coastal Carolina got the ball back on its own 13 with 2:15 to go in the first half. The Chants quickly moved the ball 81 yards in 10 plays over 2:00 before the drive stalled at the Monmouth nine. Justin Durham hit a field goal from 24 yards out, which gave the Chanticleers a 10-7 lead at the half. Starting off the second half, the Chanticleers got the ball to start the second half and quickly moved it down the field. A 47-yard pass completion from MacDowall to tight end David Duran, moved the ball to the Monmouth 5. Two plays later, Eric O’Neal finished the play with a 3-yard run with Durham’s PAT giving the Chanticleers a 17-7 lead with 11:56 left in the third period. The Hawks, on their next drive, went 13 plays over 73 yards and 7:38 on the clock, with 51 yards coming on the ground. However, the Coastal defense held at its own seven forcing a field goal attempt, which McCutchen hit from 24 yards out to cut the lead to 17-10 with 4:18 remaining in the third. The Chanticleers continued to move the ball effectively on their ensuing drive, putting together another long drive of 13 plays and 80 yards. Coastal Carolina went mostly on the ground and punched it in the end zone, with O’Neal posting his second touchdown of the game on a 4-yard dash to make it 24-10 early in the fourth quarter. The Hawks had an interception by cornerback Mike Avent at their 48-yard line, returned 11 yards to the Coastal 41 with 5:31 left in the half. Monmouth quickly struck on the second play of the drive, as quarterback Kyle Frazier connected with Ron Lauch from 19 yards out to trim the lead down to 24-17 with 5:04 to play. However, the Chanticleers chewed up the remainder of the clock, mostly on the legs of fullback Tommy Fraser, who had a pair of key third-down conversions to help run out the clock. The Chants dominated the statistics, putting together 410 yards of offense on 73 plays while limiting the Hawks to just 40 offensive plays and 174 total yards. Coastal Carolina was balanced with 207 yards of rushing and 203 of passing and converted 11 of 16 third-down opportunities while holding Monmouth to just 2-of-9 on third downs. Coastal Carolina’s ground game was paced by Fraser, with career-high’s of 14 rushes and 74 yards, while O’Neal had 17 carries for 64 yards and a pair of scores. MacDowall was 14-for-19 for 203 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Monmouth’s Sinisi was held to 84 yards on 21 carries and the one score. Frazier and Andrew Mandeville were 8-for-9 for 77 yards and one score through the air.

The Coastal Carolina University football squad struggled again with special teams and consistency, losing at Towson, 21-17, Sept. 19. On its first possession, the Chanticleers looked to score first on an 83-yard draw play by quarterback Jamie Childers but that was called back on a holding penalty. However, a miscue on special teams at the end of the drive led to the opening score of the game. A bad handled snap led to a 12-yard punt by Ben Erdman that gave Towson the ball on the Coastal Carolina 23-yard line. The Chanticleer defense held tough but on the eighth play, Tommy Chroniger connected with John Godlasky on a third-down pass for a 4-yard touchdown. Jon Boyer's extra point was good, giving Towson a 7-0 lead with 5:10 to play in the first quarter. The Tigers extended their lead with a 12-play, 83-yard drive over 6:51 on the clock. The drive was capped off by another 4-yard touchdown toss, this time Peter Athens to David Newsom. The point after was good and the Tigers had a 14-0 lead with 11:02 remaining in the first half. Coastal Carolina had an immediate answer on their next drive, taking advantage of Tre Henderson's kickoff return to the Chants' 43 and a penalty moved the drive start out to the 48. Six plays later, the Chants got on the board with a 12-yard strike from quaterback Jamie Childers to tight end David Duran for the score. Justin Durham hit the extra point to cap off the 52-yard drive and cut the margin to 14-7 with 7:58 to go in the second quarter. That would be the halftime margin in the contest. The Chants trimmed the margin again with a long drive in the third quarter. The Chanticleers moved the ball 82 yards on 11 plays, but the drive stalled out at the Towson 3. Durham came on and hit from 20 yards out to make it 14-10 Towson with 1:36 remaining in the third. The Tigers got the back ball with a short field after a fair catch at the Chanticleers' 47. It took Towson just six plays to put points on the board, as Athens connected with Newsom again, this time from 13 yards, for the touchdown. The point after was good and the host had a 21-10 lead with 11:49 to play in the contest. Coastal Carolina spread the field and picked up the tempo on the ensuing possession and it paid off. the Chants marched quickly down the field, going five plays and 64 yards in just 1:14, capped off by quarterback Zach MacDowall hitting wide receiver Brandon Whitley in the back of the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown, Whitley's first of the year. Durham's PAT again cut the lead to just four at 21-17 with 10:29 to go. The Chants had a drive going down the field and had the ball in Towson territory but an interception by Gardner snuffed out the drive and gave the Tigers the ball on Coastal's 27. Coastal had one last push in the closing minutes, getting the ball to the Towson 12. On fourth down, MacDowall scrambled and got the ball off but it bounded away from Akeem Wesley in the end zone and the Tigers held on for the win. Coastal Carolina outgained Towson 389-315, including 295 yards through the air on a combined 20-of-34, two touchdowns and two interceptions by Childers and MacDowall. The Chants only had 94 yards on 28 carries while committing two turnovers to Towson's three. Duran again led all receivers with six catches for 88 yards and one score, while Whitley had four receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown. Towson's Tremayne Dameron led all rushers with 21 carries for 84 yards, while the duo of Athens and Chroniger combined for 17-of-25 for 177 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. One key was penalties as the Chants were flagged eight times for 78 yards, including one wiping out a touchdown and another setting up a Towson score.

The Coastal Carolina University football team used a solid rushing game to defeat a pesky North Carolina A&T squad 28-7 before a sold-out Brooks Stadium crowd on Sat., Sept. 26. Battling through a scoreless first quarter, Coastal Carolina got on the board with a field goal by Justin Durham with 10:47 left in the first half. Zack MacDowall started the second quarter for the Chants and took them through 12 plays for 76 yards, which ended in a 38-yard field goal to put Coastal Carolina up three. Later in the second, linebacker E.J. Brown picked off an Aggie pass and returned it 29 yards to put the Chants in business at the A&T 9-yard line. The Chants were unable to put the ball in the end zone and settled for a 19-yard field goal by Durham with 3:52 left in the second quarter to put the Chants up 6-0. The Coastal Carolina defense held the Aggies to three and out and Jake Owen returned the ball 15 yards to the A&T 38, giving the offense a short field again. This time, the Chants punched it in the end zone, as quarterback Jamie Childers scampered 10 yards for a Coastal Carolina touchdown. MacDowall came in for the two-point conversion and connected with tight end David Duran for the pair to give the Chanticleers a 14-0 halftime advantage. North Carolina A&T finally got on the board in the third quarter, sparked by Andre Thornton's interception of a MacDowall pass to get the ball back at the Aggie 40. On the second play, Carlton Fears went over the middle to wide receiver Larry Raper for a 51-yard pass, getting the ball to the Coastal 9-yard line. Raper rushed for nine yards for a touchdown with 5:07 left in the third to cut the Chanticleer lead to 14-7. The Chants got the ball back at the start of the fourth quarter and got their advantage back on a six-play, 73-yard drive in just under three minutes. From the Chant 45, MacDowall hit a streaking Brandon Whitley for a 55-yard strike and Durham's point after made it 21-7 early in the final stanza. Coastal Carolina then put the game out of reach after getting the ball back with just over eight minutes to go. This time, it took just five plays to reach the end zone, this time with running back Tommy Fraser dashing through the middle of the line and going 39 yards for the score, making it 28-7 Chants with 4:52 remaining. On the drive, Fraser had 55 yards of rushing, including a key third-down conversion. The Chants outgained North Carolina A&T 414-239, including rushing for a season-high 304 yards, the first time over 300 yards since the Towson contest in the fourth game of last season. Coastal Carolina picked off three passes but gave up two of their own. The Chants did limit the visiting Aggies to just 4-of-16 on third-down conversions. Running back Eric O'Neal had career highs of 23 carries for 130 yards, the ninth-best single game in school his-tory. Fraser nearly made it a pair of 100-yard rushers but just missed with 16 carries for 98 yards and one score. The passing game was good for just 6-of-20 for 110 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. The Aggies were led by Mike Mayhew with 11 rushes for 84 yards, while the A&T quarterbacks combined for 8-of-27 passing for 101 yards and three picks.

The Coastal Carolina University football team opened Big South Conference action, earning a hard-fourth 20-6 win against visiting VMI, Sat., Oct. 10 at Brooks Stadium. The win was the third straight home victory for Coastal, guaranteeing a winning home record for the fifth time in seven years. VMI took the opening possession and, utilizing its option running attack for all but one play, marched down the field in 17 plays for the opening score. Quarterback Kyle Hughes dove over the pile in from the one for a touchdown. After the 81-yard drive, Jeff Sexton’s extra point was blocked by Josh Norman to give the Keydets a 6-0 lead just over seven minutes into the contest. Coastal Carolina’s first drive of the game proved to be successful, going 74 yards in just six plays and 2:02. Quarterback Zach MacDowall bought time and found wide receiver Adrian Sullivan with a 41-yard touchdown strike, the receiver’s first collegiate touchdown. Kicker Justin Durham hit the extra point to give Coastal Carolina a 7-6 lead with 5:44 to go in the first. Coastal Carolina drove downfield during the first possession in the second half. The offense powered through 65 yards in 13 plays over 5:44, but the drive stalled at the VMI 16. Justin Durham attempted a 33-yard field goal and split the uprights, giving Coastal a 10-6 lead with nine minutes left in the third quarter. After the Coastal Carolina defense forced an interception deep in its own territory, the Chanticleer offense again moved the ball, traveling 49 yards in 12 plays and chewing up 6:06 on the clock. The VMI defense again was able to keep the Chants out of the end zone, but Durham connected again, this time from 37 yards and the lead was seven at 13-6 with eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The Keydets made a push late in the fourth quarter, getting the ball down to the Chanticleer 17. On fourth-and-3, the Coastal defense made a stand, stopping the running back for a 2-yard gain, but giving the ball back to the Chants with 5:15 to play. VMI had one last chance with just over three minutes to play in the game, getting the ball on its own 38. On 3rd and 19, Hughes was intercepted by linebacker Andrae Jacobs and his 22-yard return put the ball at VMI 13. On the second play, quarterback Jaime Childers ran 13 yards into the end-zone to seal the victory. Durham hit the point-after attempt for the final 20-7 margin. Coastal outgained VMI 418-243, including limiting the Keydets to just 162 yards and no points after the visitors’ opening scoring drive. The two teams were almost even on rushing, with VMI, the league’s leading rushing team, to just 168 yards, more than 40 less than their season average. The yardage difference came in passing game, with the Chants totaling 245 yards as compared to 75 for the Keydets. Turnovers were also a major factor, with VMI giving up two fumbles and two interceptions and Coastal fumbling the ball away twice. After the opening drive and going 3-of-4 on third down conversions, the Keydets were just 2-of-14 the rest of the way, while Coastal was 8-of-13 for the contest. The Chants were led on the ground by running back Eric O’Neal, who had a game-high 78 yards on 15 carries and became the sixth Coastal and 25th Big South player to reach the career 1,000-yard rushing mark. MacDowall was 14-of-20 for 207 yards and one touchdown through the air, while Childers added a 5-of-5 for 38-yard performance. Wide receiver Brandon Whitley had a career-high 94 yards on five catches, while O’Neal also had five receptions for 43 yards. Coastal Carolina’s defense took a stand with linebackers E.J. Brown and Derrick Frasier leading the Chants. Brown led the team with nine tackles and Frasier stood out with seven tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery. VMI was led by Hughes’ 57 yards on 16 rushes and one score, with Howard Abegesah rushing 20 times for 54 yards. Hughes was 4-for-15 for 75 yards and two interceptions through the air. The Coastal Carolina University football team locked up in another classic battle with Big South Conference rival Gardner-Webb and came away with a thrilling 26-21 Homecoming victory over the visiting Bulldogs, Nov. 7. It was the Chanticleers fourth home win of the year and sixth straight win in the series. The Chanticleers struck first on their opening drive, marching 61 yards in nine plays over 3:25. Coastal made it count as quarterback Zach MacDowall connected on a 25-yard pass to wide receiver Akeem Wesley for the touchdown. Kicker Justin Durham hit the extra point to put the Chants up 7-0 with 12 minutes left in the first quarter. Coastal held the Bulldogs on their opening drive, but a Coastal Carolina fumble gave GWU the ball on Coastal’s 9. From there, it took Gardner-Webb three plays to punch it in the end zone, with running pack Patrick Hall going the final four for the touchdown. Ryan Gates made the point after to knot the game at seven with just over seven minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Chants again put together a lengthy drive, going 13 plays and 63 yards. However, the drive stalled and forced a field goal attempt by Coastal. Durham was up to the task, splitting the uprights from 42 yards out to make it a 10-7 Chant lead with 11 minutes to go in the half. Gardner-Webb took its first lead after getting a short field off the ensuing kickoff, starting at the Coastal 48. On the fifth play of the drive, quarterback Stan Doolittle hit wide receiver David Montgomery on an inside route a 9-yard touchdown. The point after was good, making it 14-10 Bulldogs with 8:41 remaining in the half. The Chanticleers were deep in Gardner-Webb territory late in the half when Marty Patterson intercepted Zach MacDowall’s pass at the GWU 1 and ran out the clock to make it a four-point halftime advantage for the visitors. To start the third quarter, the Bulldogs pushed it into the Coastal territory until cornerback Josh Norman intercepted Doolittle’s pass on the Coastal 17 and returned it 20 yards to the 37 to put the Chants back in business. From there, the hosts put together a quick six-play drive that ended on a 39-yard catch-and-run from MacDowall to running back Marcus Whitener for his first collegiate touchdown. Durham converted the PAT to put Coastal Carolina back in the lead at 17-14 with 9:45 to go in the third. Coastal moved the ball again into scoring range, but Durham’s field goal attempt was blocked and returned by linebacker Mario Brown 53 yards to put the Bulldogs in scoring position at the Coastal 11-yard line. On the fifth play, Hall got into end zone from one and the extra point put Gardner-Webb up 21-17 with one minute left in the third quarter. The Chanticleers immediately put more points on its side of the board, moving 51 yards in 11 plays down to the GWU 9 before being stopped by the Gardner-Webb defense. Durham hit his second field goal of the day, this time from 26 yards out, to cut the margin to 21-20 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the contest. After forcing GWU to a 3-and-out series, Coastal Carolina got the ball on its own 35 and started a time-eating drive down the field, using up 5:29 of the less than 10 minutes on the clock. The Chants punched the ball in the end zone on the 12th play, as Tommy Fraser bulled his way in from four yards out to put Coastal up 26-21 with 4:17 to play. Coastal went for the two-point conversion to try and make it a seven-point game, but the ball went off the receivers’ hands to leave the margin at five. The teams traded possessions, including Norman’s second interception of the game, before the Bulldogs got it back 2:59 remaining in the contest. GWU got down to the Coastal 23 and eventually faced 4th-and-15 at the Chants’ 28. Doolittle attempted to hit Perry in the right corner of the end zone, but Norman recorded his Big South record-tying third interception to seal the Coastal victory. Coastal controlled the field, outgaining GWU 473-239 and holding on to the ball more than 10 minutes more than the visitors. The 473 yards of offense was a season high for Coastal, including a season-best 332 yards of passing. The Chants were also 12-of-18 on third-down conversions while holding the Bulldogs to just 5-of-11. Fraser led the Coastal ground game with a team season-high 23 carries for 90 yards and the game-winning touchdown while also having one catch for 22 yards. MacDowall was 25-for-42 for 322 yards, two touchdowns and one interception through the air. Brandon Whitley had a game high five receptions for 45 yards, while Whitener and Marquel Wills had four receptions each. Norman had three interceptions and a pass breakup on the day, while linebacker E.J. Brown had eight tackles, including six solos and two solo sacks for 20 yards of loss. For Gardner-Webb, Hall led their ground attack with 17 carries for 68 yards, while Doolittle was just 9-for-20 for 103 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Marquis Sanders and James Perry III each had two catches for 29 yards. Patterson led all tacklers with 12 tackles, including five solos, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble.

The Coastal Carolina University football team withstood a late furious rally and held off visiting Presbyterian, 41-37, on Senior Day at Brooks Stadium, Nov. 14. With the win, the Chanticleers finished the home slate undefeated at 5-0, the first undefeated home schedule since 2005. For the second game in a row, Coastal scored on its opening drive. The drive was efficient, going 65 yards in seven plays, burning 2:39 on the clock. Quarterback Zach MacDowall buried his head behind his offensive line and scored on the 1-yard sneak. Kicker Justin Durham connected on the extra point, giving the Chanticleers an early 7-0 lead. Coastal Carolina was able to continue its control of the first quarter, this time putting together a season-long 89-yard drive over 5:12. The drive originally stalled at the Coastal 43, but the Chants faked the punt and snapped to senior running back Tommy Fraser, who scooted through the line for 35 yards to the PC 22. The offense took advantage of the new life and finished the drive, this time with MacDowall plowing two yards into the end zone. Durham kicked it through the uprights, giving Coastal a 14-0 lead. Presbyterian struck back fast in the second quarter, going 63 yards in just two plays. Quarterback Brandon Miley completed a 35-yard pass to wide receiver Sean Adegbola in the right corner of the end zone, giving the Blue Hose their first points of the game. Kicker Aaron Mayes made the extra point, putting the score at 14-7 Chanticleers with over 12 minutes to play in the second quarter. The Blue Hose continued their momentum on their next drive, this time going 10 plays on the scoring march. This time, Miley scrambled 10 yards for the score and the extra point was good, tying the game at 14 with over six minutes left to play in the second quarter. PC started moving again on its next possession, but the drive was squelched when cornerback Josh Norman intercepted Miley to give Coastal Carolina the ball back on its own 37 with 1:18 to play in the half. The Chanticleers took advantage of the opportunity, quickly moving the ball 63 yards in just six plays and 57 seconds. MacDowall connected with wide receiver Paul Nicholas, who juked the defender at the 5-yard line for the 23-yard touchdown reception, the first of his career. Durham hit his third extra point of the game, allowing Coastal to take a 21-14 lead into the halftime break The Coastal Carolina offense got the ball to open the half and started strong; posting first downs on all four of the plays in the 80-yard drive that took just 1:38. MacDowall split the defenders directly into the hands of closely-covered wide receiver Brandon Whitley for a 26-yard touchdown. Durham executed the extra point perfectly, giving Coastal a 28-14 lead early in the third. Presbyterian retaliated immediately on their first drive of the second half, marching 73 yards downfield. On the third play of the drive, Michael Ruff ran 44 yards into the Coastal Carolina end zone, and kicker Aaron Mayes splitting the uprights, allowing the Blue Hose to cut the Chanticleer lead to seven at 28-21 with just over three minutes gone in the third period. The Chants ran down field with Fraser leading the way, putting together another long drive over 72 yards over 6:07. The score came from Fraser, who powered through the defensive and stormed into the end zone on a 1-yard rush. Durham completed another PAT, upping the Chanticleer lead to 14 at 35-21. The Blue Hose offense quickly moved 32 yards downfield in just five plays, but the Coastal Carolina defense remained strong and forced Presbyterian to attempt a field goal. Mayes was able to hit a 46-yard field goal, putting the score at 35-24 Coastal with just one minute gone in the fourth quarter. The Chanticleer offense got moving again on its first drive of the fourth quarter driving 66 yards this time. MacDowall and Nicholas hooked-up again, this time for a 23-yard touchdown pass. Durham's extra point attempt went wide left, keeping the score at 41-24 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the contest. Presbyterian's offense took the ball back and put together another sustained drive, holding the ball for 5:41 as they moved it 82 yards in 13 plays. The final strike came on on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Miley to tight end Robert Bumgarner. Mayes' extra point was once again successful, making the score 41-31 with 4:54 to play. Presbyterian was successful with their on-side kick, which revived the offense with the ball at the PC 45. The Blue Hose drove it the 55 yards to the end zone, with running back Lance Byrd scored a touchdown on a 1-yard rush. However, another missed extra point, this time by Mayes, kept the score at 41-37 with just under three minutes remaining. Presbyterian attempted another on-side kick and once again regained control of the ball. The Blue Hose moved it down to the Coastal Carolina 36 and had a 4th-and-2. On a pitch option on the left side, defensive end Quinton Davis stopped Byrd for a 1-yard gain, giving the Chants the ball with just under a minute to go and sealing the victory. The two teams were relatively equal in total yardage, with PC holding a slight 487-469 advantage. The Chanticleers amassed 276 yards on the ground and 193 in the air, while PC had 220 rushing and 267 passing yards. Fraser led all rushers with his first career 100-yard game, going for 157 yards and one score on 23 carries. The 157 yards tie for the sixth most in Chanticleer history. MacDowall was 11-for-23 for 193 yards, three touchdowns and one interception while adding 69 yards and two touchdowns, both career bests, on eight carries. Nicholas had a pair of career highs on Senior Day with four catches for 82 yards and a pair of scores. Safety Dominique Davenport led the Chants with eight tackles, including seven solos, while linebacker E.J. Brown had seven tackles, including one pass breakup and an assist on a sack. PC was paced by Byrd with 148 yards on 22 carries, while Miley was 20-for-32 for 251 yards, three scores and one pick through the air. Byrd also was the receiving leader with six receptions for 46 yards. Safety Justin Bethel led all defenders with 11 stops.

The Coastal Carolina University football squad wrapped up its 2009 schedule with a 30-23 Big South Conference loss at Charleston Southern, Nov. 21. The Chants got on the scoreboard first in the second quarter, wrapping up a 10-play, 44-yard drive. Kicker Justin Durham connected on a 26-yard field goal to put Coastal up 3-0 with 10:43 remaining in the second. Charleston Southern rebounded on its next drive after putting together a 10-play march of its own over 60 yards. However, the drive stalled and John Paglia hit his 25-yard field attempt to knot the game at three with just under five minutes remaining in the half. CSU got back on the board with its next possession, putting together a seven-play, 70-yard drive over just 1:41. Quarterback A.J. Toscano scampered for 13 yards into the end zone and Paglia’s point after made it 10-3 Bucs with 1:06 to go in the half. For the second game in a row, Coastal got the ball back with a minute to go and found a way to get a touchdown. Starting on its own 40-yard line, the Chants took just seven plays and 55 seconds to find the end zone, with quarterback Zach MacDowall diving in from two yards out. The key play was a 26-yard pass completion from MacDowall to running back Tommy Fraser to get the ball down to the CSU 2. Durham hit the extra point and the two teams entered the halftime break knotted at 10. The Bucs took advantage of a short Coastal punt to re-take the lead. This time, it was a 27-yard drive that ended with a 44-yard Paglia field goal to make it 13-10 CSU early in the third. CSU then added to its lead after a Chanticleer miscue to get the ball back at the 50-yard line. It took just five plays to get on the board, as Toscano hit Kwame Krakue for an 11-yard touchdown and the extra point made it 20-10 with 8:50 to go in the third. Coastal fought back on their next possession with a long drive, taking 13 plays to go 86 yards in 5:54. Fraser plunged in from two yards out for his first touchdown of the contest to trim the margin to 20-16. However, Durham pulled his point after attempt wide left and the difference remained four with 2:56 to play in the contest. CSU pushed the lead back to seven on a Paglia field goal from 18 yards, making it 23-16 with 13:16 to play. The game was sealed when Bach intercepted MacDowall and returned it 25 yards for the score with the extra point making it 30-16 with 4:32 to go in the contest. Coastal got it close in the late going as quarterback Jamie Childers connected with wide receiver Brandon Whitley for a 37-yard touchdown pass and the point after trimmed it to 30-23 with 2:37 remaining. The Chants kicked off and eventually held the Bucs with less than 30 seconds to go, but couldn’t get off their end of the field and ended up with the loss. CSU outgained Coastal 437-371, including rushing for 239 yards to just 146 for the Chants. Both teams had three turnovers in the contest as well. Coastal was led by Fraser with 18 carries for 79 yards and one touchdown, while he also had two catches for 39 yards. MacDowall was 15-for-30 for 167 yards and two interceptions through the air while rushing 11 times for 34 yards and one score. Paul Nicholas had four receptions for 45 yards, while safety Dominique Davenport had a season-high 11 tackles and a pair of interceptions. Charleston Southern was paced by Antwan Ivey with 19 carries fro 145 yards, while Toscano was 18-for-26 for 198 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions passing and eight rushes for 45 yards and another score. Gerald Stevenson had five catches for 76 yards, while linebacker Chris Patrick led all tacklers with 13 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss.
