Message from the President and Interim Executive Director It is amazing to see how far we have come since Apna Ghar opened its doors in 1990. Now, in its twentieth year, the vision of the five founders has taken shape into more than a crisis hotline and an emergency shelter. This journey has been possible be-cause of the tremendous support of our donors, funders, volunteers and friends. As we reflect back at FY 2010 [the period between July 2009 –June 2010], two things stand out: first, the fiscal challenges we faced and secondly the steadfastness of our Boards of Directors and Staff. In spite of a decrease in funding from some sources, our staff continued to provide high quality services to our clients. Staff and the Board of Directors continued to explore new resources to weather the economic storm our nation faced. Our rewards came in the form of witnessing the transforma-tion of our clients who had little to no hope for their future when they first arrived at Apna Ghar’s doors because they had lost their home, family, legal status and mone-tary resources to becoming empowered survivors. With your support, these individu-als moved from a place of despair to leading productive lives free of any violence as they received education, stable housing, employment and gained legal status to pur-sue dreams for themselves and children. Their success stories validate the work we do, restore our trust in their resilience and renew our hopes for a better future for them and our community. On behalf of these individuals and the Board of Directors, we thank you for your on-going support of Apna Ghar, Inc. (our home). Sincerely, Surinder Nand M.D. Rambha Radhakrishnan M.D. President Interim Executive Director

Betty’s Story of Courage

“Betty” arrived in the US a year and a half ago from Central Asia. She came to the

US with her daughter to seek corrective treatment for some of her daughter’s dis-

abilities, but Betty knew she could not return to their home country after her

daughter’s surgery, because she had endured over 16 years of severe domestic vio-

lence and sexual abuse at the hands of her husband who was also an alcoholic.

Even after Betty and her daughter moved out of their home, he stalked and har-

assed her. Betty got little to no response the 9 different times she tried to get assis-

tance from the police in her home country, and she knew that if she returned there,

she would be in grave danger, and it would only be a matter of time before her

husband harmed her and her daughter again.

Betty was referred to Apna Ghar for services after her daughter’s surgery from the

hospital where she’d received the treatment. Apna Ghar’s legal advocates accom-

panied her to appointments with immigration attorneys who determined what kind

of relief she and her daughter might be eligible for under US laws. In addition they

referred her to the agency’s emergency shelter where Betty and her daughter re-

ceived intensive case management that included finding the right school and pro-

grams for her daughter. The advocates also arranged for translation services since

Betty and her daughter only spoke their native language. They also assisted her in

receiving counseling services at a sister agency where one of the Asian languages

that she spoke was also spoken.

Betty’s attorneys decided that the best course of action would be to apply for asy-

lum based on domestic violence. The current administration passed regulations in

2008 allowing victims of domestic violence to seek asylum in this country, so this

was a new type of case for the attorneys. The client and her attorneys received let-

ters stating that the client had been approved for asylum after just 5 months mak-

ing it a groundbreaking case in the US. Her case indicates great progress being

made towards providing better immigration options for survivors of domestic vio-

lence. Betty and her daughter are now looking forward to a fresh start and new op-

portunities. As asylees they also have access to public benefits that can help them

secure stable housing and healthcare. Our agency continues to work with them

through this process and we will also assist them with their legal issues relating to

becoming permanent residents and eventually citizens of the United States.

Testimonial From A Client

Dear Apna Ghar Advocate,

Your help, guidance and support has been extremely helpful in my getting this

far with my immigration status, something I never thought I could get on my

own. Thank you for giving me this opportunity and for providing me with such

an excellent lawyer. Please convey the good news of my status being approved

to the concerned people at Apna Ghar and especially to my counselor. Thanks

once again to Apna Ghar for the immense support, help and encouragement

that helped me get through one of the toughest phases of my life. I could have

never achieved any of this without all of you and I will be forever grateful for

that.

“Ayana” Apna Ghar client

Anna’s Story of Courage

“Anna” is from the Caribbean. She married her high school sweetheart in her home country

after completing a bachelor’s degree in Biology and came to the US with him. However, her

husband became extremely physically and emotionally abusive towards her after their arrival

in the US, constantly controlling and manipulating her. He also prevented her from continu-

ing her education further which was devastating to Anna. Anna had 3 children during the

course of her 20 year marriage and all the child rearing responsibilities were left to her. Anna

came to Apna Ghar in 2007 seeking a change in her life circumstances. Apna Ghar’s advo-

cates assisted her in finding legal representation to obtain an order or protection against her

abusive husband, and eventually a divorce. They also assisted her in finding representation to

self-petition under the Violence Against Women Act because her husband had never peti-

tioned for her and thus Anna did not have work authorization or a social security number.

Anna is now a permanent resident of the United States. Anna also received intensive individ-

ual counseling services at Apna Ghar. Over the years, Anna has regained her self confidence

and has rebuilt her life after enduring years of abuse. Though she has a degree in Biology she

has been cleaning homes to support herself and her family. In 2010 she completed a medical

billing and coding course, and with funding from Ashima’s Progressive Education Fund, she

can pay for the licensing classes, exam fees, books and supplies. Anna is keen to work in a

doctor’s office and she is very grateful for this opportunity to continue her education and

work towards financial independence. It is a major step in her journey towards empowerment

and will have a long lasting impact on her life. Anna says,

“I could never have gotten as far as I have without Apna Ghar. You have helped

me put my life back together and see that something different is possible for me. I

cannot tell you how much your support means to me.”

Stride Against Violence Fundraising Event

Participants in Apna Ghar’s annual Stride

Against Violence are warming up for the 5K

fun run/walk. Each year, Apna Ghar raises

awareness about domestic violence and helps

raise funds for our important programs and ser-

vices. This year’s event was held on September

13, 2009.

Art Therapy Exhibit

Seven women depicted their journey to end domes-

tic violence in their lives on October 19th at the

Mess Hall in Rogers Park. These women from In-

dia, Africa, China, Mexico, and United States; with

different languages, religions, cultures and back-

grounds all found support and commonalities while

creating drawings in Apna Ghar’s weekly Art Ther-

apy group. Through the process of ending an abu-

sive relationship, each woman explores themes of

loss, grief and despair; then new hope found in fol-

lowing their desire for respect, love, and a new life.

Soiree in the Suburbs

On March 7, 2010, Apna Ghar’s Associate

Board hosted an educational dinner to raise

awareness on domestic violence. The Honor-

able Judge Ketki Steffan of the Cook County

Circuit Courts, former Assistant State Attor-

ney and her role in assisting the passage of

legislation to allow judges to place GPS de-

vices on stalking perpetrators, the Honorable

Steffan along with an AG client engaged the

over 70 guests on the depth of domestic

violence’s devastation to each individual

who is a victim, to their children and

family and to the community. The din-

ner, Soiree in the Suburbs, was held at

Raza’s Restaurant in Oak Brook.

Capital Campaign Dinner

On November 1, 2009 Apna Ghar hosted

a Capital Campaign Fundraising Dinner

to help pay for Apna Ghar’s new shelter,

which was purchased in September, 2008.

The above “Tree of Empowerment” will

reflect the names of all Shelter Space Do-

nors and will be displayed at the Apna

Ghar office.

Advocating for Progress

In May 2010, Apna Ghar’s Super-

vising Legal Advocate, Neha Gill,

presented and co-facilitated a 3-day

administration. Shelters for

survivors of gender-based violence

in the region function not only as

residential facilities but the entire

organization operates out of them

because of safety concerns.

Neha also participated in a White

House briefing in February 2009

focused on addressing

immigration-related challenges,

language barriers, and transnational

abandonment.

Awards and Recognition

In 2010 Apna Ghar is honored to have been

recognized in the following ways:

• Chicago Commission on Human

Relations Advisory Council on Immigrant
