DESCRIPTION This beautifully illustrated book combines a detailed exposition of the anatomy and function of the cranial nerves with practical coverage of clinical concepts for the assessment and differential diagnosis of cranial nerve dysfunction. An introductory chapter provides a brief overview of cranial nerve anatomy and function, skull base anatomy, classification of pathologies, and imaging approaches. Each of the twelve chapters that follow is devoted to in-depth coverage of a different cranial nerve. These chapters open with detailed discussion of the various functions of each nerve and normal anatomy. The authors then describe common lesions and present a series of cases that are complemented by CT images and MRIs to illustrate disease entities that result in cranial nerve dysfunction.
Highlights:
Concise descriptions in a bulleted outline format enable rapid reading and review
Tables synthesize key information related to anatomy, function, pathology, and imaging
More than 300 high-quality illustrations and state-of-the-art CT and MR images demonstrate important anatomic concepts and pathologic findings
Pearls emphasize clinical information and key imaging findings for diagnosis and treatment

DESCRIPTION Authoritative and lavishly illustrated, this book is a valuable compendium of surgical techniques for the most complex oncologic problems in the head and neck patient. It distills the author’s decades of experience in the surgical management of cases in which the excision of complex lesions is difficult and reconstruction is problematic. In the first half of the book, each chapter addresses cancer in a different region of the head and neck. Each chapter provides discussion of etiology, pathology, pathophysiology, and surgical anatomy, providing the necessary background for diagnostic evaluation, surgical treatment as well as nonsurgical treatment, including chemotherapy and radiation. Additional chapters cover such important topics as care for the pediatric patient, radiotherapy, restoration secondary to tumor ablation, and speech, voice, and swallowing implications following ablative procedures.
Features:
Detailed descriptions that guide the clinician through each surgical procedure
Comprehensive discussion of management strategies that provides clinicians with a solid understanding of the available treatments and the possibilities and limitations of each
Nearly 1,000 high-quality illustrations, photographs, and radiographic images that demonstrate pathologic and surgical concepts in precise detail
Coverage of the latest techniques in skull base surgery and laryngeal surgery
Valuable discussion of nursing care, nutrition, and speech therapy
An essential resource for optimizing the care of patients with advanced cancer, this book is ideal for clinicians and residents in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, oncology, and general surgery.
Donald
SALES HOOKS This book’s USP is summed up as “the management of the difficult case” in head and neck cancer surgery. There are several head and neck cancer books meant as general introductions to the subject, including our own new Genden/Varvares, and these are suitable for beginning residents. Senior residents, fellows, and practitioners, however, also need a resource for the cases that aren’t straightforward. The big push in head and neck cancer treatment has been to use primary radiation and chemotherapy, but substantial numbers of patients have been failed by these modalities. How then to successfully treat those unfortunates? This book, by the well-known and respected Paul J. Donald, is the needed resource – for the revision surgery that is required when the first surgery is a failure, or the last-ditch salvage surgery that is needed to treat a patient who has not responded to anything else.
As Dr. Donald writes, “The special feature of first importance is the quality of the illustrations. They detail precisely how to do many of these complex operative procedures. The second is to offer to the surgeons a perspective on the management of extensive disease in contrast to attempting tumor ablation by the combination of chemotherapy and irradiation. Another special feature is the detailed description on how to do a number of skull base surgical techniques. One of the best chapters in the literature in the modern surgical approach to treatment of the cancer of the larynx has been written by Dr. Bruce Pearson. This provides a unique systematic approach on the management of layngeal malignancy based on tumor extent and not on a classification system. The Chapter on Mediastinal dissection is found in very few standard texts. The chapters on nursing care, nutrition and speech therapy are extremely helpful and useful in this aspect of care of the patient suffering from head and neck cancer.”

DESCRIPTION Applying new technologies, presenting your experience, and, of course, thinking of your current practice in the light of new evidence, needs some understanding of clinical research methodology. This book is not a textbook, but a brief guidance for clinical research practice. It aims at bridging the different points of view of statisticians and clinicians, but does not replace personal meetings and discussions between both professions at the earliest step of a clinical study. We hope that you find this book enjoyable, easy to read and understand, and helpful for improving your research skills. “Me, the editors, and the authors hope that this book will help you to sort and focus your ideas when setting up a clinical study, and to understand why certain information should be expressed in this or that fashion, how data should be compiled, analyzed, and presented. This book is neither exhaustive nor complete; it just fits better into your daily business.” - David L. Helfet
