Experience. Strength. Balance. These are just some of the words San Jacinto College Head Basketball Coach Scott Gernander uses to describe this year’s squad. The 24-year head-coaching veteran is excited about this year’s squad, much like he is every year.

“I love coaching,” said Gernander. “When sports has been your life, you look forward to going to work every day. I love being around these players, I look forward to the competition, and I enjoy seeing these guys get better each and every day.”

Gernander has assembled a team with two National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I transfers, and two players who won a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) championship title last season. He has six returners, including an All-Conference selection in Marsell Holden, and has added a group of newcomers who could be as good as any he’s had in previous years.

Holden will lead the offense this year, and will be counted on for his outstanding shooting. “I’ve been lucky enough to coach some great shooters here at San Jac,” noted Gernander. “Marsell is probably one of the best ever.” Holden played in all 31 games for San Jac last season, finishing second on the team in scoring at 14.1 points per game. Newcomer Kuamaine Osborne,

his game, and while Adrian Morales and Jason Carter didn’t see much action last season, the head coach knows he can count on them to step

in when needed.

“One of our strengths this year is our balance and size in both our inside and outside game,” commented Gernander. “We have excellent shooters throughout the roster, and a lot of talent that will help us be as good as we can possibly be.”

That balance will come in the form of San Jac’s eight newcomers. They bring with them experience at the NCAA level, an NJCAA national title,

and all-around athleticism. Look for Tyree Johnson, Flavien Davis, Parrish Grant, Devin Bray, and Osborne to post big minutes this season for San Jac.

Gernander, who won his 600th game as a college head coach last season, has once again put together a solid schedule that will hopefully take his team back to Hutchison, Kan., for the national tournament. San Jac has 18 home games this season, including the annual Sam Cassell Classic in early November. Region XIV conference play will be as tough as ever, as the league is balanced, and, according to Gernander, “the strongest league in the country.”

An addition on the sideline this season is Assistant Coach Jacob Wonders. After spending four years as the head coach at Panola College, Wonders returns to San Jac, a place he is familiar with, having spent a season as an assistant coach in 2001-02.

“I’m excited to have Jacob on our staff,” said Gernander. “He’s a great compliment to our coaching team, and will bring a tremendous amount of experience to our squad.”

While last season didn’t pan out the way Gernander would have preferred, he says it was one of the most satisfying of his career. “We faced adversity at the start of the season, and those guys pulled through and really over-achieved.” He sees this year’s team doing much of the same – working hard to improve every game, fighting for a return trip to the NJCAA national tournament.

Coach Profile

Gernander led his squad to the Region XIV quarterfinals and a 20-12 overall record during the 2008-09 season. Three players went on to NCAA Division I institutions – Maurice McNeil (University of Houston), Devin McDonald (University of New Orleans), and Andrew Gonzalez (Houston Baptist University) – a sign of Gernander’s success as a head coach.

Head Coach Scott Gernander enters his 24th season at the helm of the San Jacinto College men’s basketball program, and his intensity and passion for coaching has never been more evident. Entering this season, Gernander owns a 611-154 overall record, amounting to an astounding .800 win percentage. His record as San Jac’s all-time winningest coach offers evidence of his success. He’s taken his teams to the national tournament on eight different occasions, finishing as the national runner-up twice. Dozens of players have moved on to NCAA Division I institutions, and many have gone pro following their collegiate career. Coach Gernander’s 611 wins rank 11th all-time in National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) history.

On Jan. 5, 2010, Gernander did what few before him have done. With a 103-51 win over Lone Star – Tomball, the Hall of Fame coach notched his 600th career win, making him one of just 13 active NJCAA head coaches to eclipse 600 career victories. Last season, San Jac had a young squad that finished 25-6 under Gernander’s leadership. Carrington Tankson, Dion Prewster, and Marsell Holden earned All-Region honors, and Gernander was named the Region XIV coach of the year. At one point during the season, San Jac was ranked fifth in the nation, and earned a third seed at the conference tournament.


Coach Profiles

The 2007-08 season was much of the same for Gernander, as he guided his team to the Region XIV semifinals, completing the season at 23-9, and outscoring opponents an average of 86-77. Five players went on to earn scholarships at NCAA institutions. The highlight of that season came before a single game was ever played, as Gernander was inducted into the University of Minnesota at Duluth (UMD) Athletic Hall of Fame, his alma mater. He is also a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Hall of Fame, and is an eight-time NJCAA Region XIV coach of the year.

Gernander’s protégé’s include former NBA All-Stars Steve Francis and Sam Cassell. Francis spent over 10 years in the NBA, while Cassell guided Houston to back-to-back championships, and most recently won a title with the Boston Celtics. He is now an assistant coach with the Washington Wizards. Gernander couldn’t be more proud of their accomplishments.

Gernander began his coaching career at Tower-Soudan High School (Minnesota) where he coached for seven years. He then made his way to Texas as the head coach at South Houston High School. In 1980 he was hired as an assistant coach at San Jacinto College, and was named head coach prior to the 1987-88 season. As an assistant coach, Gernander helped San Jac win three national titles.

A four-time letterwinner in both football and basketball at UMD, Gernander led the Bulldogs on the hard court in points per game as senior with 11.7. That season, he was named the UMD men’s basketball most valuable player and outstanding senior athlete.

Gernander holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Minnesota-Duluth, and a master’s degree in education from the University of Minnesota. He and his wife, Bernie, have six children: Marc, Lee (deceased), Bridget, Andrea, Paige, and Scott Robert, who is in his third year as a volunteer assistant coach with San Jac.

In June 2010, San Jacinto College Men’s Basketball Head Coach Scott Gernander completed his coaching staff with the hiring of Jacob Wonders, former head coach at Panola College. Wonders comes to San Jac with more than 10 years coaching experience.

Wonders spent the past four seasons as the head coach at Panola College in Carthage, Texas, where he helped the Ponies average more than 80 points per game each season (2006-2010). Twenty-seven student-athletes under Wonders’ tutelage continued their education and basketball careers at four-year universities, including 17 who earned scholarships to play at the NCAA Division I level.

Prior to his time at Panola, Wonders spent three years as an assistant coach at Houston Baptist University (HBU). While at HBU, Wonders was responsible for scouting, academic monitoring, on-the-floor coaching, and coordinating the Huskies recruiting efforts. During his tenure, HBU went 77-22, including three consecutive National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national tournament berths and a top-10 national ranking in points per game. During the 2005-06 season, the Huskies finished No. 8 in the nation with a 27-6 overall record, and appeared in the NAIA Sweet Sixteen for the second time in school history.

“We are so fortunate to have Jacob as our new assistant basketball coach,” said Gernander. “He has done a tremendous job wherever he has coached. He is a hard worker, a good recruiter, and has a great basketball mind. He has a great feel for people, players, and coaches, and is well respected by many in the basketball profession. We are looking forward to having him help keep our great tradition alive at San Jacinto College.”

Wonders began his coaching career at his alma mater, Central Michigan University, where he was a student assistant with the Chippewas before graduating in 1997. He then traveled to Beaumont, Texas, as an assistant coach at Lamar University, helping the Cardinals to the 2000 Southland Conference tournament championship, and a berth in the NCAA tournament. He has also held coaching stints at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho, and as a volunteer assistant coach at San Jacinto College during the 2001-02 season.

A native of Detroit, Mich., Wonders earned a degree in sports studies from Central Michigan University, and holds a master’s in kinesiology from Lamar University. He and his wife, Caren, have two children. He is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

After spending a season as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater, Sam Houston State University, Scott R. Gernander returned in 2008 to the school where his collegiate playing days began to serve as an assistant coach under his legendary father. This season marks his third as an assistant coach on the San Jac sideline.

As a graduate assistant at Sam Houston State from 2005-2008, the younger Gernander coached on teams that recorded a combined 66-27 record, and had three 20-win seasons in the Southland Conference.

The 27-year-old Gernander played as a guard at SHSU from 2003 to 2005, averaging seven minutes a game as a top reserve. The Bearkats were 31-27 during his time on the hard court. Prior to playing at Sam Houston, Gernander was a member of the San Jacinto College men’s basketball team, where he played on teams that went 57-12, won two conference titles, and were national junior college runners-up. He averaged 8.1 points per game while at San Jac.

Before playing at San Jac for his father, the younger Gernander was a first team All-District and second team All-Region guard for Coach Boyce Paxton at Sam Rayburn High School in Pasadena. He averaged 17.8 points as a senior.

Gernander received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Sam Houston State in 2006 and a Master of Arts in Kinesiology in 2008. He married Amanda Crabtree in June of 2008.

Familiar Face sees success in NBA

Cassell wins NBA title with Celtics, enters coaching ranks

A face familiar to the San Jacinto College men’s basketball program has seen success in the NBA. Steve Francis, nicknamed “Stevie Franchise,” played five seasons in Houston during the early part of his career, and later again signed with the Houston Rockets as a free agent. Francis also spent time with the Orlando Magic, New York Knicks and Memphis Grizzlies during his 10+ years in the NBA.

As a member of the San Jac men’s basketball team from 1996 to 1997, Francis helped SJC reach the national title game, averaging 12.5 and 7.5 rebounds per game. Head Coach Scott Gernander remembers Francis’ arrival in Pasadena like it was yesterday. “He was sort of raw in terms of his skills because he hadn’t played that last year,” Gernander said. “About halfway through the season, I could see his incredible talent taking over games. He’s the best rebounding guard we have ever had and he could do so many things to help you win. He played above the rim from the guard spot and was a big contributor that year.”

Ironically, Francis did not play basketball as a senior in high school in Maryland, but came to San Jac to try to restart his career. He did that and more. Gernander watched Francis guide a talented team to 36 straight wins before a loss in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament. Over the years, Gernander and Francis have remained close.

After two standout seasons at the University of Maryland, Francis was the second overall pick of the Vancouver Grizzlies in the 1999 NBA draft. He was traded to the Rockets a short time later, and San Jac fans were no doubt happy to see Francis back in H-town. He shared rookie of the year honors in 2000 with Elton Brand and was runner-up to Vince Carter in the 2000 Slam Dunk Contest. Prior to the 2004-05 season, he again packed his bags and headed to Orlando as part of a trade with the Rockets for Tracy McGrady, before returning to Houston a few years later.

“Steve called me the night he resigned with the Rockets (in 2007),” Gernander said. “We talked for about an hour. He was thrilled to be back in town as a player. He’s always kept a home here, and I know he was pleased to be able to come back to a familiar place.” In his 11 years in the NBA, Francis averaged 12 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.

Sam Cassell is another former San Jac player who enjoyed a fine career in the National Basketball Association. In 2008 he added yet another NBA championship to his résumé in what would prove to be his final season as a NBA player.

Cassell was with San Jac for two seasons (1990–1992) and averaged 23.4 points, 7.6 assists and 5.1 rebounds a contest during an All-America sophomore season. After playing the 1992-93 season with Florida State, Cassell was a first-round pick of the Houston Rockets in 1993, where he helped the team win back-to-back NBA world championships (1993–1994 and 1994 –1995).

In 17 seasons in the NBA, Cassell scored 15,635 points, grabbed 3,221 rebounds, and dished out 5,939 assists. In March 2008 he was honored as the ninth best of the 20 greatest players in Milwaukee Bucks history during the team’s 40th Anniversary Team Celebration. He was hired as an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards in May 2009.

What a journey it was for the player formerly known as ‘Sam I Am’ in Houston. Cassell was the 24th overall player chosen in the 1993 NBA draft. In the 1993 NBA Finals against New York, Cassell made several clutch baskets that helped the team eventually win the title in a seven game series. The next year, Cassell again played a big role as the Rockets advanced as the No. 6 seed in the West, ultimately winning the title again in a four-game sweep of Orlando.

Cassell spent three seasons in Houston and played for seven other teams in his 17 seasons in the NBA.

“I’m so proud of Sam for the things he has accomplished in the game,” San Jacinto Head Coach Scott Gernander said. “He has always had the drive to be great and has had a terrific career. Two titles to start with and just a solid, solid career. I’m happy for him.”

San Jacinto College’s all-time record over a 46-year span is 1,409-339 entering the 2010-2011 season. San Jac won 20 consecutive conference titles between 1973 and 1993 and has seen 18 players earn all-America honors. The 1973-1992 championships were during the years of the Texas Junior College Athletic Conference while the 1993 title was from the 13-team Texas Eastern Athletic Conference. In addition, 18 San Jac players have become NBA draftees including former Houston Rock-ets’ guard Steve Francis, and former Boston Celtics guard, and current Washington Wizards assistant coach, Sam Cassell.

co-captain of the Baltimore Ravens cheerleading squad.

Levis Francis joins San Jacinto College Central this year as its newest cheerleading coach.

A former Baltimore Ravens cheerleading co-captain, Francis incorporates coaching techniques that include sharp motions, clean routines, solid stunting, and an overall uniformed look.

“The style this year is very collegiate,” said Francis. “At the same time, we do incorporate different styles, including funk and hip-hop elements into our routines to show our versatility.”

Along with her NFL cheerleading experience, Francis has eight years of coaching experience, including five years with Los Angeles Valley College. She is certified by the National Cheerleading Association and the United Spirit Association and holds a bachelor’s degree in communication from Morgan State University and a master’s degree in physical education from Azusa Pacific University.

“In Levis, we think we got someone who can really motivate, who has a lot of experience and who is just eager to raise our cheer squad to a great level,” said Scott Gernander, Head Coach of the SJC men’s basketball team.

Francis said the team is ready make their debut year at upcoming games at the Central campus.“I am extremely excited to be here and in awe of my new team every day,” said Francis. “They are a

talented group of individuals. We are committed to working at our highest potential, supporting our teams and being of excellent service to our institution.”

Surrounded by the monuments of history, the industries and maritime enterprises of today, and the space age of tomorrow, San Jacinto College has been serving the citizens of East Harris County, Texas, for nearly 50 years. The service area includes the Channelview, Deer Park, Galena Park, La Porte, Pasadena, and Sheldon Independent School Districts, as well as portions of the Humble, Pearland, and Clear Creek school districts.

The College roots date back to May of 1960 when voters in the district approved the creation of East Harris County Union Junior College and a seven-member Board of Regents was established. The name was changed a few times over its history to its current San Jacinto Community College District, although it has always been informally referred to as San Jacinto College. In September of 1961, 876 students attended the College at its location in Pasadena. Since then, the College has grown to include three campuses, seven extension centers, a continuing and professional development division, distance learning, a dual credit program with local high schools, an early college high school in cooperation with Clear Creek ISD, and an enrollment of over 27,000 credit students each semester.

Students who attend San Jacinto College are offered a wide array of services, ranging from tutoring and advising at the Student Success Centers, to financial aid assistance from knowledgeable and well-trained financial aid advisors. Students are also provided career assessment testing and assistance with resumes and interviews for employment. San Jacinto College offers assistance with enrollment, and the special populations office provides assistance for students with certain disabilities and / or impairments.
