Southfork News

“For the Residents, by the Residents” Merry Christmas December 2010

Christmas Past

Each Christmas I remember

The ones of long ago;

I see our mantelpiece adorned

With stockings in a row.

Each Christmas finds me dreaming

Of days that used to be,

When we hid presents here and there,

For all the family.

Each Christmas I remember

The fragrance in the air

Of roasting turkey and mince pies

And cookies everywhere.

Each Christmas finds me longing

For Christmases now past,

And I am back in childhood

As long as memories last.

A Sunny Christmas

Every year at Christmas time

there’s not a sign of snow.

Instead we spend our yuletide days

in the sun's warm cheery glow.

We have the best of Christmas things,

The lights, the gifts, the bells,

(And "snowbirds" who arrive en masse

To fill our beach hotels and homes.)

The glorious weather fits right in

With our happy Christmas mood,

And we can also walk and run

Without having to be snow shoe’d.

So don't feel bad for your (Dade City) friends

who have no snow or ice.

We think our sunny Christmas here

is a holiday paradise!

From Norm’s desk

We have had a couple of very busy months and have done some major upgrades. The new signs have been

quite a project. We have repainted the Shuffleboard structures and put up new Score Boards this summer.

We re-surfaced the Shuffleboard Courts and we only have a couple of minor items to do on them and they

should be in excellent shape. We have finally got our hedges under control and will attempt to keep them up

better.

We have some difficulty lately contacting people who change phone numbers and do not report the new

number to us. Please, if you change your number give it to us so that we can contact you if the need arises.

Please note, all of your personal information is kept under lock & key and is not given to anyone without

your consent.

I hope you have had an opportunity to look at the new signs and landscaping at the front entrance. We are

proud of the new look and feel that you will be also. If you haven’t come in the front lately, please do so

and let us know.

Norm

The Greatest Gift

The greatest gift at Christmas time is one we all may give……

A friendly smile that helps to make life easier to live.

A kindly thought, a helping hand ,to show someone we care,

To let them know how much it means to us to have them there.

The greatest gift at Christmas time costs not a cent to buy.

It’s being a good neighbor as days and months go by.

Its offering a shoulder when someone needs a lift

And so I pray this Christmas day…….

That this may be your gift!

from the Association President

Submitted by a Board Member to be used in place of my regular letter!!!!!!!

10 Ways to Stop the Homeowner’s Association

1. Don’t come to their meetings.

2. If you do come, come in late and try to be discreet.

3. Never accept an office. It is better to stay in the background and criticize. Nevertheless, get sore if you are not

appointed to a committee.

4. If you are appointed or volunteer for anything, do not attend any of the meetings. If you do attend a meeting, find

fault with the work of the other members.

5. If you are ask by a board member to give your opinion on some matter, tell them you have nothing to say. After

the meeting tell everyone how things should be done. (very common here)

6. Let the board members do the work, that’s why they were elected?

7. Never give the Treasurer the yearly dues in advance…..Wait until you get your money’s worth, and then wait a bit

longer.

8. Never encourage the Board members for a job well done, keep mum about it. You could ruin a board member by

flattery.

9. It is good to tell of your board member failings to anyone around, because they might not otherwise find out for a

long time on their own and have to wait for the gossip mill.

10. If there happen to be a few zealous workers on the board, make a loud protest against the complete board being

run by just a few people.

Hanukkah Begins at Sun down Dec 2nd

At last! At last! Hanukkah is here! The whole house is bursting with holiday cheer.

Pancakes are sizzling as hard as they can, Browning delectably crisp in the pan.

The dreidels can scarcely wait to be spun; Presents are hidden for Hanukkah fun.

And there, on the table, polished and bright, the shining menorah gleams through the night.

Like the oil lamp in ancient history, that burned on and on miraculously!

And each flaming candle proclaims the great story of the Maccabean heroes, their deeds and their glory.

Southfork Men’s Club

The December meeting will be held at the Golden Corral on Friday, December 3rd at

9am.

We would love to see all the men in our community join us for our monthly meetings

and see what we are all about. We have many interesting events in the planning for the

New Year.

One of the many things planned is the contest of the “Brothers of the Bush.”

Come and find out more about this and the many other happenings being planned!!!!

Christmas Golf Cart Parade

The Christmas Golf Cart parade will be held on Saturday, December 18th, 2010 at 5:30pm.

This is such a big event each year and the Southfork Community along with the Blue

Jay/Harmony Heights communities look forward to seeing all the decorated golf carts/scooters go

Women’s Club

On November 3rd, 46 women met in the clubhouse for their monthly meeting. All the reports were read and

approved.

Shirley Rouer of the Charity committee explained that she would like to have, Toothbrushes, Toothpaste,

Socks and Underwear placed in the Box at the Clubhouse marked Toys for Tots before December 16th. It

would greatly be appreciated.

Mary Bolin mentioned that we will have 24 meals for 4 different schools (6 each) delivered for the

holidays. The club is buying the meat and the Men’s Club offered getting the bags to put the food in along

with the Bread and Margarine. The ladies are getting the other items like Rice, Macaroni & Cheese, Yams,

2Cans each of Peas & Green Beans, Jello, Cake & Frosting.

Mary Bolin talked also of our Annual Bazaar on November 20th. The Quilters and the Yarn Hookers are all

ready and the Ladies are also making different baskets to be raffled. We also need Baked Goods to be

donated for this. Everything seems to be on schedule and we hope that this event will be a success like the

other past years.

We talked about our other Fundraiser, The Chili Supper on February 13th. The tickets will go on sale at our

next meeting on December 8th and they will be $7.00 each. We will have the Auction first followed by the

meal (all you can eat) and lastly you will be entertained by the “Oldie Newlywed Game.”

Also at the meeting of December 8th, we will have our gift exchange. The Secret Pal group brings a gift

with the name of the Secret Pal on the gift but without telling them from who it is from. The other group

will bring a gift ($10.00 approx) with their name signed who it is from. We should have a good time and

after we will be going to the Golden Corral for our Christmas meal.

At our November meeting, Shirley Tiratto introduced a Beautician from “Secretly Soft” who showed the

ladies how to make themselves beautiful with all of the samples brought in. It was very well received by

everyone.

The meeting ended with cookies and cider provided by Joann, Billie, Dee Dee and Shirley. The meeting

ended around 11:30am.

See you at the next meeting,

Marielle

Volunteering

I got to wondering if volunteers know something that the non-volunteers don’t know. Here is a short list of

what volunteers know that non-volunteers don’t know.

Volunteering gives you an opportunity to change people’s lives, including your own.

Volunteering allows you to meet people you otherwise wouldn’t meet.

 Volunteering expands your horizons.

Volunteering helps you to understand other people who are different from you.

Volunteering can give you a new perspective on your own life.

Volunteering can help you change the way you view yourself.

Volunteering gives you a chance to give back.

Volunteering lets you share a skill that you have.

Volunteering improves your physical, mental and emotional health.

Volunteering allows you to support a cause you truly believe in.

So among the lists of the joys that the coming of the New Year brings, add volunteering to that list. We

need you!

PS Don’t sit back and complain about nothing being done and no activities during the year etc. We are

looking for energetic people with new ideas and someone to organize a monthly event for each month of the

year. You can always offer to help with anything planned and give us new ideas to implement and we sure

would appreciate any suggestions!

Kitchen Supplies

Just a little reminder about the kitchen supplies. If when using any items and you see that we are low on

anything, there is a clipboard hanging on the cupboard door and just list the item or items that are low. This

helps when supplies are being purchased so that we have enough to cover for any event at the clubhouse.

Plans for the Best New Year’s Party in Years!!!!!!!

The Association has contracted “Rick Chapman” to entertain us on New Year’s Eve.

Rick Chapman entertained us in November 2009 and after his show everyone asked that he return.

He is a great entertainer and interacts with the audience and he also will have volunteers who will participate in his show. We will need Southfork people to take part in this show.

Rick has been working for the past year just planning a new show especially for us this coming New Year’s Eve.

There will be Music for your listening pleasure and to dance by. Rick has asked that you sign up for your favorite songs that you may want to hear.

There will be a lot of food to snack on and we will have the hall set up like a nightclub atmosphere with round tables versus our long tables.

Tickets are sale @ $12.50 per person.

Time of the party: 8pm to midnight

Ticket sellers are:

Sherri Glatfelter, Helen Stowe and Carol Albers.
