The foundation of UND athletics is the unwavering passion

of Fighting Sioux fans, the nation’s best.

“I’ve never been to a place that’s more proud of its athletes and its athletics than UND.”

strength and conditioning

missionIt is our mission to physically and mentally prepare the student-athlete for the rigors of collegiate athletics, by implementing professionally designed, scientifically sound training programs, designed specifically to reduce the incidence of injury and help each team and student-athlete reach their full athletic potential.

PHilosoPHyWe believe that strength and conditioning is crucial to the complete development of the student-athlete. The philosophy of our strength and conditioning program is based on the belief that what occurs in the weight room and field transfers to the

playing surface. We train sport specifically with the goal of enhancing athleticism. We also believe in the importance of work ethic, attitude, accountability and mental toughness and that these qualities can be developed and enhanced through our strength and conditioning program.

At the University of North Dakota, one program, functioning behind the scenes, but which should not be taken lightly, is the strength and conditioning program. The strength and conditioning program at UND is among the finest in Division I and vital to the success of all UND athletic teams. The strength and conditioning staff commits themselves to the development of size, strength, power, speed, agility, conditioning, and body composition of each student-athlete. The goal of the strength staff is to develop the athlete and team to reach their maximum potential throughout their career while staying injury free.

Nate Baukol, director of strength and conditioning, oversees the program and facilities. Baukol has three full-time assistant coaches and one graduate assistant coach to assist him.

Together they direct and monitor the training of over 500 student-athletes in 20 sports at UND. UND also boasts some of the finest strength training facilities around. The facilities include the Ralph Engelstad Arena weight room, the Memorial Stadium weight room, and the Hyslop Sports Center weight room.

Training has become a year-round activity, with a student athlete spending as much time on physical development as any other part of their sport throughout the year. Student-athletes follow either off-season or in-season programs, which are individualized specific to the athlete and sport. Off-season programs are five days a week, summer months included.

Each athlete receives a comprehensive summer training manual to follow, given that a member of the strength staff won’t be supervising them. In-season programs are typically 45-minute sessions, two to three days per week, supervised by the strength and conditioning staff.

The Fighting Sioux volleyball program trains at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center’s Brown and Bender Performance Center, which was graciously donated by Mark Brown and David Bender during the 2005-06 season.

sports medicine

One of the unfortunate aspects of athletics is that injuries do occur. However, every student-athlete from UND athletic teams are under excellent care thanks to the UND Divison of Sports Medicine and its umbrella of staff, facilities and training.

With a staff of nine faculty athletic trainers, two graduate assistant athletic trainers and 30 athletic training students headed by director of sports medicine Steve Westereng, UND student-athletes are in good hands, returning them quickly and safely to participation.

The UND Division of Sports Medicine was formed in 1990. Additionally, the bachelor

of science in athletic training degree and the UND Center for Sports Medicine was founded. The athletic training education program was the first program in the nation to be placed directly in a school of medicine and is housed within the Department of Family Medicine, combining the efforts of the UND Athletic Training program and the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

UND’s progressive thinking makes the institution a leader in the field of athletic training. Moreover, the program’s affiliation with the School of Medicine helps both the athletic training student and the student-athlete. Completion of the bachelor of science in athletic training allows the student to sit for the board of certification exam to become a certified athletic trainer (ATC).

The student-athletes also benefit from having a wealth of competent individuals getting them back into action.

In order to be accepted into the athletic training program, which received a seven-year accreditation in 2001 (note: UND will receive word in August 2008 of re-accreditation) from CAAHEP, a student must complete 100 hours of observation, fill out a formal application, and have a minimum GPA of 2.75.

The Division of Sports Medicine also has an outpatient facility, the UND Center for Sports Medicine, which specializes in rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries. UND student-athletes, as well as the general public, utilize this facility to decrease pain, increase strength, and improve range of motion of injuries. Many of the injuries seen in the Center for Sports Medicine are significant, such as pre- and post-surgical issues. The center is staffed by Cathy Ziegler, PT/ATC, and Robin Tracy, PT/ATC, who have experience with high school, college, and professional athletes.

Whether it is reading to area school children or lending their time to countless charitable organizations or providing disaster relief, UND’s student-athletes pride themselves on their community involvement and have long been looked upon as pillars within the UND and Grand Forks communities. In 2009-10 alone, UND student-athletes logged nearly 7,000 hours of community service.

Impact Scholarships

Establishing an endowment through the UND Foundation provides an opportunity to leave a legacy at UND while making an impact on more than 400 student-athletes every year, helping provide scholarship and program support. All endowments of $25,000 or more are recognized on the Fighting Sioux Legacy Wall at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Increasing the support available immediately for scholarships is a critical during UND Athletics’ Division I transition. Impact Scholarships are helping ensure UND Athletics has the resources necessary during its move to recruit the brightest, most talented athletes and continue oering scholarship packages comparable to those being oered by our D-I competitors. Donors who fund ve-year full or partial scholarships are recognized on the Fighting Sioux Legacy Wall.

university administration

Dr. Robert Kelley began serving as UND’s 11th president July 1, 2008.

He had been dean of the College of Health Sciences and professor of medical education and public health at the University of Wyoming since 1999.

Before then, he was associate vice chancellor for research and executive associate dean of the graduate college at the University of Illinois

at Chicago, and professor of biological sciences at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and professor of anatomy and cell biology at the College of Medicine, both at the University of Illinois at Chicago. At the University of New Mexico, he served as chair of anatomy and senior executive associate dean, as well as other faculty capacities. He has also taught at the University of California, Berkeley.

Kelley earned his bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, in 1965, and his master’s degree in 1966 and doctorate in 1969, both in cell and developmental biology from the University of California, Berkeley.

Kelley has served as chair of the Assembly for the Association of American Medical Colleges, chaired the Council of Academic Societies for the AAMC, and was a member of the executive board of the National Board of Medical Examiners, which is responsible for the U.S. medical licensure examination. In addition, he has served the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on several study sections, served on the director’s advisory board for NIH strategic planning, and chaired the Minority Biomedical Research Support Program advisory committee in the NIH Division of Research Resources. That program helped support research for historically black universities, tribal colleges, and “minority-majority” institutions. He also served as principal investigator for the University of Wyoming/Northern Rockies INBRE (IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence), an NIH program which promotes biomedical research and connects the state’s community colleges with the University of Wyoming.

He and his wife, Marcia, who was a lecturer in the University of Wyoming Department of Communication Disorders, have four children.

athletics director

Brian Faison is his third year as athletics director at the University of North Dakota. Faison assumed his duties at UND in May of 2008.

Faison’s first year was a busy one, leading Fighting Sioux athletics through its first year of transition to NCAA Division I status for all of its sports programs. He secured conference membership for 16 of UND’s 20 sports in the Great West Conference, restructured the athletics department and enhanced UND’s statewide profile through community outreach initiatives and an expanded Fighting Sioux Sports Network.

In Faison’s second year, student-athletes continued their tradition of academic excellence: four student-athletes were named academic All-Americans by ESPN the Magazine; two student-athletes received NCAA postgraduate scholarships; and a school-record 111 student-athletes received academic all-conference honors.

Alumni and fan support continued to grow: annual giving to the Fighting Sioux Club set another record; volleyball set a single-season attendance record; women’s hockey finished seventh in the nation in average attendance; and men’s hockey finished second in the nation in average and total attendance.

Competitively, UND teams again enjoyed outstanding seasons: volleyball, women’s basketball and softball all won Great West Conference championships; men’s hockey won the Broadmoor Trophy, the WCHA Final Five championship, and qualified for its eighth straight NCAA tournament appearance; and football enjoyed its seventh straight winning season.

Prior to joining UND, Faison served as special assistant to the president for athletics development (2004-07) and director of athletics (1999-04) at New Mexico State University. Before that, he served as the director of development for the National Children’s Cancer Society (1995-1999). Faison gained experience in Division I administration as the director of athletics at Indiana State University (1988-1995), assistant athletics director for development at the University of Louisville (1984-1988) and assistant athletics director for promotions and fund raising at Illinois State University (1979-1984). He also had stints as the assistant manager for athletic public relations at the University of Missouri (1978-1979) and assistant director for alumni activities at the University of Missouri (1974-1978).

Faison received his bachelor’s degree in 1972 from the University of Missouri and is also a 1997 graduate of the National Planned Giving Institute.

Faison and his wife, Donna, have three sons: Jonathan, Matthew and Bradley.

The 2010-11 season marks Dick Clay’s 26th year at North Dakota

One of the longest-tenured coaches in the history of Sioux athletics, the 2010-11 season marks the 26th year of Dick Clay’s decorated coaching career at UND . It also marks a year of change for Clay, who has added the reigns of the men’s track and field and cross country programs after having served as women’s track and cross country head coach since 1985 .

The 2010 track and field season was a memorable one for the Sioux women, as Clay’s student-athletes set numerous school records . At the Great West Conference Indoor Championship, junior Jessica Butler won the 60-meter hurdles with a school-record time of 8 .98 seconds and led the Sioux to a third-place finish .At the GWC Outdoor Championship, Brenny was the runner-up in both the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs .

Also during the outdoor season, sophomore Emily Emerson was twice named GWC Athlete of the Week . UND’s quartet of Mikaela Hirst, Paige Kuplic, Cheri Boyer and Taryn Anderson broke an 11-year old record in the 800-meter relay at the Coastal Carolina Shamrock Invitational . Several Sioux athletes also recorded times, throws and jumps that have cracked UND’s all-time top-10 lists .

Clay’s women’s cross country team earned team and individual runner-up honors at the 2009 Great West Conference Championship; the Sioux finished second in the team standings while senior Brittany Brenny earned her second straight all-conference first team nod by taking second in the individual standings . Brenny was joined on the all-conference team by teammate and second-team selection Katherine Enabnit .

In 2008-09, UND’s first as a Division I program, Clay guided the Sioux to a third-place finish at the inaugural Great West Conference Cross Country Championship, where three of his runners earned all-conference honors: Brenny (first team), Mandy Gefroh (first) and Emily Emerson (second) .

Clay’s track and field team finished fourth at the 2009 GWC Outdoor Championship, highlighted by individual conference titles by Jessica Clausnitzer (pole vault) and Kristi Dahlheimer (3,000-meter steeplechase) . The Sioux also placed fourth at the 2009 GWC Indoor Championship, led by a pair of individual titles from Clausnitzer, a two-time Division II All-American, in the 60-meter hurdles and the pole vault .

A hallmark of Clay’s coaching career at UND has been academic succes, and the 2009-10 was as successful as any . Clay’s women’s track and field team boasted the sixth-highest grade point average (3 .5) in Division I last season, earning the team 2010 Division I Women’s All-Academic Track and Field Team honors by the U .S . Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) .

2010 cross country recap 29

2010-11 track & cross country

The 2010 UND cross country season will long be remembered for the dominance of new-comer Lindsay Anderson .

The Leeds, N .D ., product, who transferred to UND from Iowa prior to the season, an-nounced her arrival by winning the first meet of the season .

Anderson never stopped running, or winning, the rest of the season .

By the time the 2010 season had come to a close, Anderson had won four different meets, including the Great West Conference Cham-pionship, garnered GWC Athlete of the Year honors, All-GWC first-team accolades, and four GWC Athlete of the Week nods .

It was quite possibly the most dominant in-dividual season by a Sioux runner in program history, and highlighted Dick Clay’s 26th sea-son as UND head coach .

The 2010 sesason, however, was hardly a one-woman show .

Junior Emily Emerson (Lino Lakes, Minn .) joined teammate Anderson on the All-GWC first team after placing fifth at the conference championship, the second time in three years she has landed on the all-conference team .

Fellow junior Katherine Enabnit (Carmichael, Calif .) finished 15th at the GWC Champion-ship, giving the Fighting Sioux a trio of run-ners in the top 15 .

UND also welcomed a highly talented fresh-man class in 2010 . First-year runners Jor-dyn Dass (Hopkins, Minn .), Kahla Erickson (Grand Rapids, Minn .), Casie gates (Bismarck, N .D .), Victoria Lutz (Park Rapids, Minn .), Tay-lor Pintar (Bismarck, N .D .), Brittany Ungs (Mantorville, Minn .), and Savana Weller (Sauk Centre, Minn .) each saw significant ac-tion as first-year runners, ensuring a bright future beyond 2010 .

Those seven freshman joined a roster that also included juniors meghan Enabanit (Car-michael, Calif .) and Angela Kumm (Hutchin-son, Minn .), and sophomore Anna Lipetzky (Moorhead, Minn .), providing Clay with am-ple depth .

Anderson led the way throughout the year, taking first-place honors at UND’s Ron Pynn Classic (Sept . 4), Eastern Illinois’ Panther Open (Sept . 10), a season-ending dual at South Da-kota (Nov . 13), and, most importantly, the GWC Championship .

Her first-place finish at the conference cham-pionship was UND’s first individual confer-ence title of the Division I transition . It also resulted in Anderson being named the Great West Conference Athlete of the Year .

In addition to their All-GWC first team honors, Anderson and Emerson were also selected to the 2010 GWC Fall-Academic team, and were joined by teammates Kumm and Lipetzky .

2010-11 und track & cross country

Despite a fifth-place ranking in the 2011 Great West Conference Indoor Track and Field preseason coaches poll, 26th-year head coach Dick Clay has the ingredients in place to make a run at perennial league powers Utah Valley and South Dakota .

UND boasts a dual conference champion in senior Jessica Butler (Grand Rapids, Minn .), and a pair of distance runners who earned cross country all-conference honors in juniors Lindsay Anderson (Leeds, N .D .) and Emily Emerson (Lino Lakes, Minn .) .

That trio, along with a talented and experi-enced supporting cast, give Clay and his stu-dent-athletes plenty of reason for optimism this season .

DISTANCE/mID-DISTANCEUND hopes Anderson can build on her his-toric 2010 cross country season in which she earned Great West Conference Athlete of the Year honors and was a four-time conference runner of the week .

Emerson, meanwhile, returns to once again anchor UND’s distance runners after earning her second career cross country all-confer-ence honor .

There is plenty of experience behind Ander-son and Amerson, including the likes of ju-niors Katherine Enabnit (Carmichael, Calif .), meghan Enabnit (Carmichael, Calif .), and Angela Kumm (Hutchinson, Minn .), as well as sophomore Anna Lipetzky (Moorhead, Minn .) .

The distance and mid-distance runners will also be pushed by sophomore Taryn Ander-son (Remer, Minn .), and freshmen Jordyn Dass (Hopkins, Minn .), Kahla Erickson (Grand Rapids, Minn .), Victoria Lutz (Park Rapids, Minn .), Taylor Pintar (Bismarck, N .D .), Savana Weller (Sauk Centre, Minn .) .

JUmPS/HURDLESButler enjoyed a breakthrough season as a sophomore, winning conference titles in the 60-meter hurdles (indoor) and the 100-meter hurdles (outdoor), setting school records in both .

Behind the standout Butler, Clay boasts plenty of depth . Senior Sarah Fegley (Berthold, N .D .) and junior mikaela Hirst (Bismarck, N .D .) will contribute in both hurdles and sprints, as well sophomores megan gray (St . Cloud, Minn .) and Kirsten Haas (Belgrade, Mont .) .

Freshman Hannah Daggett (Frazee, Minn .) will be in the mix in the jumps, while class-mate Taylor Brett (Forest Lakes, Minn .) looks to make her mark in the pole vault .

SPRINTSThe aforementioned Fegley and Hirst return, as do junior Cheri Boyer (Barney, N .D .) and sophomores Paige Kuplic (Savage, Minn .) and Brittany Zander (Mandan, N .D .) .

Freshmen Brittney Bolstad (Fargo, N .D .), Brit-tany Ungs (Mantorville, Minn .) and Anne Van Hell (Forest Lake, Minn .) are also sprinters to watch .

Another freshman, Jenna gillson (Grand Rap-ids, Minn .), will compete in both sprints and hurdles .

THROWSJunior co-captain Brooke Biederstedt (Dick-inson, N .D .) is UND’s top returning thrower and was voted a team captain for the second straight year .

Her classmate, Samantha Underhill (Brain-erd, Minn .), also returns in 2011 and looks to take a step forward in her development .

A third junior, Christine Weinreich (Pismo Beach, Calif .), joins the Sioux from Cuesta (Ca-lif .) College and brings the ability to make an immediate impact in 2011 .

Talented sophomore megan Storstad (Grand Forks, N .D .) rounds out a talented quartet of Sioux throwers .

Junior distance runner Emily Emerson was named UND’s Most Valuable Runner in 2010.

Biederstedt, a junior, has been elected a team co-captain for the second straight year.

Butler won GWC titles and set school records in the 60-meter hurdles and 100-meter hurdles.

The Great West Conference is made up of 10 intercollegiate in-stitutions that range geographi-cally from New Jersey to Texas to California . The 10 member schools are spread out over seven states and four time zones, giving each school added exposure - both in terms of media and recruiting - in new destinations .The conference affiliation also generates much interest within the 10 institutions’ substantial alumni base .

The conference, which began as a football-only league, took a giant leap in the collegiate athletic world when the conference expanded to include several addi-tional sports and several new members .

Joining the league on July 10, 2008 were Houston Baptist University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, University of North Dakota, University of South Dakota, Texas-Pan American and Utah Valley University . Chicago State accepted the league’s invitation to join in October, 2008 . These seven schools joined football only members Cal Poly, UC Davis and Southern Utah University to make up the 10-member league .

In addition to football, championships conducted during the 2008-09 academic year were men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, and men’s and women’s golf . Team sports in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball begin league play in 2009-10 .

As the conference began planning for multi-team sport competition in 2009-10, several teams were added in the sports of women’s soccer and baseball to help provide a more diverse and competitive field . Delaware State, Howard and South Carolina State joined as associate members in women’s soccer, giving the Great West two, four-team divisions . The associate members, plus NJIT, make up the Eastern Division, while North Dakota, South Dakota, Houston Baptist and Utah Valley play in the West . Northern Colorado and New York Institute of Technology joined as associate members in baseball, giving the Great West eight play-ing members . Seattle University was added as an associate member in cross country and track and field in 2009 .

Officially announced Feb . 25, 2004, charter members of the Great West Football Conference were California Polytechnic State University; Uni-versity of California, Davis; North Dakota State University; University of Northern Colorado; South Dakota State University; and Southern Utah University . Conference competition began on Sept . 4, 2004 with UC Davis scoring a 52-0 win over South Dakota State and Northern Colorado notching a 15-13 win over North Dakota State .

The Great West continues its proud tradition in football and has been rated as one of the best in Football Championship Subdivision and ahead of Football Bowl Subdivision leagues such as the Mid-American Conference and the Sun Belt .

The Great West Conference recognizes student-athletes on both a weekly and full-season basis . Individual awards include players of the week; all-conference teams; an academic all-conference team; and player, newcomer and coach of the year awards . The league also crowns team champions for both regular season and post-season competition .

The governance of the Great West Conference remains primarily with the member institutions . Each member institution is represented on the President’s Council by its respective CEO . The general opera-tions and management of the Conference will be conducted by the directors of athletics and senior woman administrators (Joint Council) . Scheduling of contests, assignment of officials and certain media rela-tions functions remain with member institutions .

UND President Dr. Robert Kelley (left) and director of athletics Brian Faison announced UND’s membership into the Great West Conference in July of 2008.
