The Hinds Community College Eagles ended the 2013 season on a hot streak, winning their final five regular season games to finish the campaign with a 7-2 mark, good enough for an invitation to the Bra-zos Valley Bowl in Bryan, Texas.

Although Hinds fell to Navarro (Texas) College, 31-24, in the final minute, the Eagles still finished with a 7-3 overall record and a No. 18 ranking in the final National Junior College Athletic Association (NJ-CAA) poll.

Head coach Gene Murphy, the winningest active coach in the NJ-CAA ranks, returned to the side-lines for the sixth season in his sec-ond stint as head football coach at Hinds. Murphy has compiled a 159-61-5 overall record in 22 sea-sons.

The veteran head man was opti-mistic, yet cautious, heading from preseason camp into the regular season.

"We have a lot of talented fresh-men that need to continue to grow up, but we feel good about our returning players and the way we went about our preseason camp," Murphy said.

"Our expectations in this program remain high. It has always been our goal to play into November and December in the postseason to have a chance to compete for championships."

The Eagles returned key players on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, led by sopho-more quarterback James Summers (Greensboro, N.C.), who had a standout freshman campaign both through the air and on the ground.

The versatile Summers, a second team Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) All-State selection in 2013, finished 89-183 for 1,401 yards, 12 touch-downs and 11 interceptions through the air and led the team in carries (134), rushing yards (572) and rushing touchdowns (12).

The Hinds ground attack will be led by sopho-

more Tommy McCalpin (Port Gibson), who had 965 all-purpose yards (431 rushing, 48 receiving, 86 punt returns and 400 kick returns) in 2013.

Christopher Harthone (Shaw), the leading re-turner in tackles from a year ago, anchors the Eagles defense from the linebacker position in his second season.

Harthone came off a rookie season in which he recorded 36 solo tackles and 36 assists, one sack, one tackle for loss and one interception, and was selected as the Defensive Player of the Game in the Brazos Valley Bowl after recording 10 solo tackles and two assists, including a tackle for loss.

Erin Brown (Monroe, La.) and Peter Bailey (Kis-simmee, Fla.) both returned as stalwarts on the

Eagles defensive line.Brown had 34 solo

tackles and 13 assists, including six sacks and five tackles for loss in 2013, while Bailey end-ed the season with 29 solo tackles and nine assists, two sacks and nine tackles for loss.

Joseph Houston (Pelahatchie), an All-Region and MACJC All-State first team se-lection as a freshman kicker, once again leads the Hinds special teams' corps in 2014. Houston proved to be a force as a newcom-er, as he connected on 37-41 extra points and finished seven-for-nine on field goals.

The Eagles are counting on a handful of newcomers on both sides of the ball.

Barron Burns (Cleve-land), a freshman strong safety/line-backer hybrid, and Javarius Taylor (Court-land) and Charvarius Ward (McComb), both defensive backs, are three incoming play-ers on the defensive side that made an im-mediate impact dur-ing training camp.

Aldreiquis Hall (Mont-gomery, Ala.), Mar-

quez McNair (Magee) and Kendrid Ross (Taylorsville) are three wide receivers that all started in the various receiver positions utilized in the Eagles up-tempo, high-powered spread offense, and all three are pro-viding an element of height and speed to their respective positions.

The first home and South division contest for the Eagles will take place on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Joe Renfroe Stadium in Raymond.

Dwike Wilson, Wide ReceiversDwike Wilson, a former player at Hinds Community College, is in his sixth season back on the

Hinds staff, where he serves as the wide receivers coach. As the Eagles former defensive coordinator for four seasons, he developed such standouts as

defensive linemen Leon Mackey (2009 and 2010) and Dontrill Hyman (2011). Mackey was named to the 2009 All-Region team and signed with Texas Tech University, and Hyman was named to the 2011 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-American team as a freshman in 2011 after leading the state with 14 sacks.

Wilson oversaw a defense that led the state in interceptions in 2011 with 21, led by Adonis Armstrong, who signed with East Carolina University. Armstrong led the state with seven picks, including two that he returned for touchdowns.

Besides the efforts of Hyman and Armstrong was the standout play of Mitchell Hoskins in 2011. The freshman linebacker finished second in the state in solo tackles with 73 and also collected 22 assists.

Wilson played at Hinds in 1997 before serving as a graduate assistant coach in 1998 and 1999. Wilson, a Vicksburg resident and graduate of Vicksburg High School, comes to Raymond from Coahoma Community College in Clarksdale, where he spent one season on the Tigers coaching staff.

Wilson previously spent one season at North Carolina A&T University, where he was the recruiting coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He also spent one season at Murray State University, also serving as recruiting coordinator, as well as the defensive backs coach for the

Racers. Before coaching at Murray State, he spent a four-year stint at Itawamba Community College. Wilson, who was a valuable member of the Eagles 1997 State Championship team, received a bachelor of science degree from the

Preparing to become an Eagle Football CheerleaderWe are looking for well-rounded individuals with an outgoing personality and good character. We want our cheerleaders to represent Hinds Community College in a positive manner. Grades and rec-ommendations are considered as well. Good collegiate motions, tumbling and stunting are extremely important. Being talented is important but leading the crowd, having natural college expression and sharp motions with good placement are the faces of Hinds cheerleading.

Responsibilities of a Hinds Football CheerleaderHinds football cheerleading requires a major time commitment. Practice begins in the summer and goes through the spring semester. Practice is held 4-5 times per week in the early afternoon during the fall and spring semesters. Hinds football cheerleaders cheer at football games, home and away. Squad members make public appearances and perform task for the Hinds Community College ath-letic department and college.

Dr. Albert Gore (1938-1940), Baseball, Boxing, Football and Track & FieldDr. Albert Gore, a former multi-sport standout in baseball, football, boxing and track and field for Hinds

Junior College from 1938 to 1940, was inducted into the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) Sports Hall of Fame in April 2014

Gore, a Big Creek native who was named the Family Physician of the Year for the state of Mississippi in 2009, was elected vice president of the freshman class and later became captain of the Hinds football team. For his achievements in sports on the Raymond Campus, he was inducted into the school's Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.

After graduating from Hinds in 1940, Gore moved on to nearby Mississippi College, but was sent into the United States Army with his National Guard unit in November of that same year. After receiving a commission as a second lieutenant two years later, he was promoted to the rank of captain and was sent to serve in the South Pacific theater of World War II as a company commander in 1944.

Gore then re-enrolled at MC in 1946 and one year later, received his bachelor's degree in chemistry, math and physics. Along with his studies, he also excelled in baseball, basketball, football and track and field for the Choctaws and was inducted into the MC Sports Hall of Fame in 1985.

After his time spent at Mississippi College, Gore attended Tulane University and Tulane University School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree in 1951. He served his internship at the City Hospital in Mobile, Ala.

For 14 years he practiced family medicine in Bay Springs and Jackson before returning to the U.S. Army in 1966 as a colonel in the Medical Corps. Just a year later in 1967, Gore graduated from the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine and served in the military for 14 years. He received such awards as the Legion of Merit Award with two oak leaf clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Vietnam Service and Campaign medals.

Gore retired with the rank of brigadier general from the Army Medical Corps and the Mississippi National Guard in 1980, but immediately returned to the medical field, becoming associate professor of family medicine and medical director of the Family Practice Center at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. In 1984, he moved to Harlingen, Texas, and became director of the South Texas Hospital before retiring from there in 1987.

He continues to remain active at his community college alma mater, serving as a member of the Hinds Athletic Alumni Chapter. He is also a former member of the Hinds Community College Foundation Board. For his efforts, Gore received the 2006 Alumnus of the Year Award at Hinds Community College.

He was awarded the Military Physician of the Year Award, which was renamed the Albert L. Gore M.D. Military Physician of the Year Award the next year when it was presented.
