MESA VARSITY HUDDLE HOLLER

Mountain Man BreakfastMountain Man BreakfastMountain Man BreakfastMountain Man Breakfast

1 lb.bacon

10-12 medium potatoes; sliced

2 medium yellow onions; diced

12 eggs; beaten

1 1/2 cups fresh mushrooms; sliced

salt and pepper to taste

1 green bell pepper; diced

3 cups grated Cheddar cheese

3 cloves garlic; minced

picante sauce

Heat a 12" Dutch oven using 18-20 briquettes bottom until hot. Cut bacon into 1 inch slices. Add to Dutch oven and fry until brown. Add onion, mushrooms, bell pepper and saute until onions are translucent. Add potatoes and season with salt and pepper. Cover and bake using 8 briquettes bottom and 14-16 briquettes top for 30 minutes. Season eggs with salt and pepper then pour eggs over top of potatoes. Cover and bake another 20 minutes. Stir gently every 5 minutes. When eggs are done,

cover top with cheese and replace lid. Let stand until cheese is melted.

Serve topped with picante sauce.

Serves: 10-12

Happy New Year! With a new year comes an opportunity to take some training. The indoor portion of Varsity Leader Specific training is coming up on Saturday, February 7th at the Mesa East Stake Center. It is located at 2228 East Brown Road. It will begin at 6:45 a.m. and last until approximately 3:30 p.m. The cost is $15 for the

indoor training.

The Varsity Outdoor training will be held at the University of Scouting at the Heard Pueblo on Saturday, February

28th. For this portion you will need to take 5 hours of courses from the following list:

• On Target

• Survival Basics

• High Adventure/Scouting for the Older Boy

• GPS

• Backpacking

• Rappelling/Climb on Safely

• Mountain Man Events

• Welcome to Varsity Scouting

Now is the time to make a goal to attend one of the Wood Badge training courses for 2009. There will be five

courses that you can choose from. They are:

““GOT SAND?”

Happy New Year. It’s hard to believe that we are in a new year. I know we are all probably thinking about

what new resolutions we can make for this year. I have several suggestions to reflect on:

• May we strive to do more service.

• May we strive to live more fully our commitments to our family.

• May we strive to live our commitments to our Heavenly Father.

• May we do those things which will make us a better person and leader.

• May we be honest with our fellow man.

• May we be honest with ourselves.

• May we love one another.

The mountains are beginning to call us for the gathering of the 2009 MOGOLLON MOUNTAIN RENDEZVOUS, I hope you are as excited as I am.

We are looking forward to having a great event and with your participation it will be one of the best.

Now is the time to get that “sand in your craw”. Show your young men what you are made of by delivering to them the promise. With your help

and guidance they can achieve much good.

There have been questions raised as to how the cook-off will

work. Dishes will be entered in three categories:

A secret ingredient will be provided and must be used in at least one dish. (Using it in ALL will definitely score points…) Below is

a rough overview of the judging.

1. PresentationPresentationPresentationPresentation: Be unique in how the food is delivered

and presented to the judges. (Maybe a tall tale)

2. Exterior InspectionExterior InspectionExterior InspectionExterior Inspection: Judges will look at the color, even-ness of cooking, volume and aroma. Don’t have any

ash or foreign objects in the food.

3. Internal InspectionInternal InspectionInternal InspectionInternal Inspection: Is it raw inside? Does it have pleas-ant aroma? Completeness of the cooking process and

creative use of the secret ingredient will be rewarded.

4. TasteTasteTasteTaste: How does it taste. (Of course!) Chew-ability and

aroma will allow be considered. Does it smell nice?


2009 Mesa District Mogollon Rendezvous Resource Guide Complied By Mike Zaccardi

Rendezvous Tips from People of the Mountain Varsity Scouts - Mesa (Arizona) District

• Go to Goodwill, or DI for fur coats, or old blankets, or old pants. For the pants just sew fringe on the side. Or just make legging out of the bottoms of old pants with

fringe.

• Blankets for capotes need to be out of a nonwoven material. Wal-Mart has a blanket that has a stamped design on it. Cost around $9.00

• Most of the time a capote needs at least 1 1/2 twin blankets to complete everything, so have two boys go in together on the second and switch up parts, ie pockets,

fringe to give the capote some WOW!

• Pull the stuffing out of the belly of stuffed animals like teddy bears and make them into hats. Perfect use of cutting cost and having a unique outfit.

• The pirate shirt in the McCall's or Butterick pattern can be used for a mountain man shirt pattern.

• Remember these items don't need to be made out of leather, the possibles bag, you could use the extra blanket from your capote, old levis, upholstery material. You

could go to an upholstery shop and ask for scrap fabric

• When making leather pants the best pattern is an old pair of your Levis that fit pretty tight.

• One team I know started out with making shirts, those boys donated their shirts to the team so two years later the next group made pants, now they had shirts and pants for the show. All was donated and put up for two years later when the next group made possible bags and hats, you get what I mean but this way the cost was

minimal and the boys really enjoyed the hand me downs and looking and feeling like a team.

Trade Item Tips

Here is a list of a few things that boys can make that don't cost much, and will increase their fun:

1. a perpetual candle that doesn't burn up, made from a six inch length of 1/2 inch copper pipe with a cap soldered to one end and a cap loosely fit on the other with a

piece of 1/4 inch tubing soldered to it. Then a wick is inserted, and the whole thing is filled with lamp oil.

2. Home-made root beer, in two liter bottles always makes a good trade item. It must be the kind made with yeast.

3. Scalp locks are a good item. Buy an old wig from the DI, cut the hair off and insert strands or clumps of it into a 22cal. shell with a string protruding out the other end

to tie to your hat.

4. Flint and steel fire kits made of a piece of file with one side ground off to a smooth edge, along with a piece of flint and the whole thing stored in a candy tin.

5. Draw-string bags are real easy to make out of leather or denim. The bags could be filled with parched corn (real easy to make) for extra interest.

6. Walking sticks made of yucca or oak saplings are easy to make. If they are carved and varnished and decorated with beads and feathers, they are even more inter-

esting.

7. A candle lantern made from an empty gallon or quart can is easy to make.

8. Survival kits can be assembled small enough to be packed in a tin can, and the whole thing wrapped in a denim draw-string bag.

9. A bow-drill fire making kit is easy to assemble and encase in a denim bag made for it.

10. A two-inch signal mirror hung from a leather thong with beads for decoration is a good trade item.
