President & CEOLutheran Homes of Michigan

In His Service,

The family sat around the table enjoy-

ing their noon meal, like families have

done for generations. As they ate,

they talked — but not just about news,

sports, and weather. It was obvious as

I sat and listened that this was a close

family; a family that cared deeply about

one another. A family that was “in”

each others’ lives.

One asked about the sweater being knit for a friend. Another inquired about summer plans and we learned about a desire to visit Mackinac Island. Still another wondered what it would be like to travel in a hot air balloon. A few quickly said they would do that, if given the chance. They lingered over lunch for what the modern world would view as an extrav-agant 90 minutes. The conversation never slowed.

What I witnessed at that meal was intimacy at the deepest level, revealing a richness of relationship rarely experi-enced today. But this was no “ordinary” family: This was a moment in the lives of residents of a Lutheran Home. I was blessed to spend some time with them in the warmth of their love and care for each other.

In this particular family, the average age was around 88 years. This is a family that, but for a series of “losses” in their lives, would never have known

each other. It is a close family that came together because of circumstances, but now stay connected because of what they mean to each other.

Theirs is a scene that plays out day after day within our Lutheran Homes of Michigan family. People coming together in our housing, assisted living, skilled nursing, hospice, home care and even rehab services. Finding deep connections as relationships blossom and become the seasoning for their lives. This issue of Highlights explores the variety of God’s gifts as experienced in our ministry. We should never lose sight of the fact that the true gift is one person to another – the gift of self.

In that light, we cannot miss the bless-ings that God has given us, abundantly.

Perhaps it’s time for you to “gift” your-self to someone special at a Lutheran Home. We welcome and cherish our volunteers, and you can become one easily. If you are interested, go to www.AgingEnriched.org for details on our ministries, and how to reach them. Or ask someone at the Lutheran Homes ministry you are already in touch with.

In doing so, we guarantee you will be blessed.

The Gift of Self

Lutheran Homes of Michigan’s 2009 Verse of the Year

Each year since 1998, Lutheran Homes of Michigan has selected a verse to be its focus for the year – sharing with residents, clients, staff, volunteers, and supporters in order to center the heart of the ministry on one spiritual truth.

This year, as we move through troubling, uncertain times, we are reminded of the stead-fastness of God and His unwavering love and blessings in our lives.

With that in mind, the verse chosen for this year is 2 Corinthians 5:7:

“We walk by faith, and not by sight.”

God is a God of abundance, not of scarcity.

When it was first announced that I had accepted a position with the Lutheran Homes of Michigan Foundation, some people ques-tioned my timing and judgment.

After all, why would anyone intentionally go to work in the area of fundraising during such dark economic times?

The answer is simple; God is a God of abun-dance, not of scarcity. He has a storehouse of blessings, and it would give Him great joy to pour out that storehouse onto the people served by the ministry of Lutheran Homes of Michigan.

My friend Dorothy is one of God’s special gifts.

Dorothy has lived at the Lutheran Home Frankenmuth since 2004. Even though a stroke left one side of her body paralyzed, she continues to be as active as her body will allow her to be. She has joined the Lutheran Home sewing club and has found a way to contribute in a meaningful way, even though she cannot hold a needle and thread.

A volunteer crafted a special weight that Dorothy uses to hold down cloth while she cuts quilt squares with her good hand. The club makes quilts to sell at the Home’s Christ-mas bazaar. Last year residents decided to give the proceeds of the bazaar to the City Rescue Mission, and to the Salvation Army.

Dorothy is also an encourager. Even though writing is a chore, Dorothy spends many hours each week writing cards and letters of encouragement. She always includes Bible passages and prayers. Dorothy uses the same special weight to hold stationery as she writes longhand. She has formed a pen pal bond with one young man in prison, and she recently shared a letter she received from him.

An Encouraging Word

Albert D. Kaul

He explains that her letters are some of the only contact he has with the outside world. In part due to Dorothy’s letters, this young man has formed a strong relationship with our Lord by reading his Bible. So you can see, God is using Dorothy in mighty ways despite her physical limits.

In Acts, God tells St. Paul: “My grace is sufficient for you. For My power is made perfect in weakness.” Dorothy is full of God’s grace and passes that grace on to others around her. People like Dorothy find great pleasure in sharing their gifts with others, and sharing God’s grace in the process.

The LHM Foundation exists to receive generous gifts from people like you and use them to support the ministry of this organization. The Foundation also helps to ensure that people like Dorothy have all they need, including a good home, social opportunities, and spiritual support.

That’s why I can’t think of a better time to come to work for the Foundation. It is a great joy to connect people, and their individual gifts, with opportunities to give and serve our Lord.

At The Manors in Saginaw, casual connections turned into a beautiful and spiritual addition to the campus.

Colleen Koski, administrator at The Manors, learned about a Reese carpen-ter and contractor, Tim Bauer, who makes unique crosses. She had seen his story in the local media, and contacted him about making crosses for The Manors.

Bauer, 54, is an elder and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Reese. His crosses are normally about 12 inches tall, and made to hang in homes. Each is made with different wood, with specially-fired copper representing the body of Christ. The firing, done by hand with a torch, gives each cross its own distinctive coloration and look.

“We talked for quite a while, and he shared a special story about a family who had a pear tree fall in their yard during a storm,” Koski said. “Tim took the wood from the tree (planted when the family bought the home) and made each family member a cross. Little did I know — the pear tree was from the yard of a fellow Lutheran Homes of Michigan coworker.”

“My challenge to Tim was to make us 36-inch high crosses to hang in special places at the entrances to each of our buildings. Each cross will be a different wood, to match the interiors,” Koski said.

That opened up a new opportunity for Bauer.

“I had never made one that big,” Bauer said. “In some ways, it’s easier, in some ways its harder. It’s easier because you are actually cutting and doing stuff in

more sweeping turns.”

“But I use a torch to make the colors, and with such a large expanse of copper, it’s more difficult to control the colors. You have to kind of think forward, around the next big curve.”

In May, Bauer delivered the first cross, and it was hung in Meadow View Manor, which provides memory care for residents.

“The cross is grand!,” Koski said. “When the lights reflect off the cross, you can’t help but look at it. It ended up being the right fit for us, and truly represents the feelings and meaning of our faith-based mission and values.”

Bauer said The Manors project has him thinking big. He’s already pondered how he might get a larger cross to places like Honduras, where he has done mission work. He’s not sure there is a real limit to how big of a cross he could make, if he set his mind, and his shop, to it.

“How big does God make trees? If I get the order, we’ll make it work,” he said with a laugh.

Tim Bauer can be reached at 989.233.8970, or via email at [email protected].

Who’s talented and accomplished and glamorous, in the running for Miss Michigan this month, and a long-time volunteer at the Lutheran Home Monroe?

Why, Miss Monroe, of course.

Elizabeth Wertenberger, 20, a lifelong resident of Monroe County, has been an active volun-teer at the Home for the past several years. In fact, volunteerism, and making connec-tions between seniors and youth has been the prime theme in her life.

One reason Elizabeth likes working with seniors is their rich store of life experiences and wisdom.

“It’s important not to let history repeat itself — we need to learn from the past, and not make the same mistakes,” she said.

A 2007 graduate of Dundee High School, Elizabeth is currently a junior attending the Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids. She is studying interior design with a minor in graphic design. She hopes to eventu-ally help architects design health care facilities, from hospital settings to long-term care campuses.

She put in a special guest appearance at Lutheran Home Monroe during the Country Fair last summer, complete with tiara. In the picture to the right, that’s her at the fair with Lutheran Home Monroe resident Eunice Hansen.

The Beauty of

VolunteeringEunice has lived at the home for more than a decade.

Elizabeth’s mother, Mary Ann, is a regis-tered nurse and safety nurse at the Home, working there the past five years.

Lutheran Home Monroe isn’t Elizabeth’s only “home.” Since being crowned last August, she has been to every skilled nursing home and assisted living facility in the county, and met and worked with more than 1,000 residents.

In fact, her passion is volunteerism, and that’s a prime part of her position plat-form for both the Miss Monroe and Miss Michigan competitions: “Volunteerism: Closing the gap with youth and senior citizen interaction.”

Brenda Lawrence, administrator at Lutheran Home Monroe, said Elizabeth’s energy and excitement enrich lives of seniors, their families, and caregivers.

“She created a dance program for the residents, and it was phenomenal. All the families came, and we had a recital, with the residents in Hawaiian outfits. They all loved it,” Lawrence said.

Among many other non-profit and service-minded efforts, Elizabeth is work-ing to raise funds for a Senior Olympics to take place this fall at the Lutheran Home Monroe.

As this issue of Highlights went to press, Elizabeth competed in the Miss Michigan Scholarship Pageant, and finished as third runner-up.

Congratulations Elizabeth!

Elizabeth and her mother, Mary Ann.

Two new administrators have been named at facilities in the Lutheran Homes of Michigan family.

In Frankenmuth, Jim Meyer is the new administrator at Lutheran Home Frankenmuth after earning his Nursing Home Administrator license.

Meyer is a long-time Lutheran Home employee and a Frankenmuth native.

“The examination process was rigor-ous, and being a student again was an interesting experience,” Meyer said. “I’m looking forward to leading the great team we have in Frankenmuth, and continuing our long tradition of serving seniors.”

Lutheran Home Frankenmuth marks its 40th year of operation this October. The Home serves about 138 residents in skilled care and assisted living, and has approximately 200 employees.

“We believe in promoting from within whenever possible, and Jim has a heart and the skills for serving seniors, their families and their caregivers. That’s why he was a natural choice for this position,” said David M. Gehm, President and CEO of Lutheran Homes of Michigan.

At AuSable Valley Community in Oscoda County’s Fairview, Kathie Hanert has earned her license as Nursing Home Administrator.

AuSable Valley is part of Community Caring, Inc., and is sponsored by Lutheran Homes of Michigan.

“I’m excited about this opportunity to serve in my hometown,” Hanert said. “We will continue providing excellent local care for all of our seniors, and serving their families and caregivers.”

Hanert will lead the AuSable Valley Community campus, and provide direct day-to-day oversight of the Home. The Home serves 75 seniors in skilled care and assisted living, and the entire campus has approximately 150 employees.

“Kathie’s passion for the Christian mission of AuSable Valley and for the people we serve sets her apart,” said Randy Harris, chairman of the board for Community Caring. “She has an excellent and varied background in the nursing, senior care, and health care professions.”

The campus in Fairview also includes subsidized apartments, assisted living, and independent living duplexes.

The Gift of Leadership

Award-Winning Service

Lutheran Home Frankenmuth has earned a My InnerView Excellence in Action Award for achieving the highest levels of excellence, based on customer satisfaction levels. The Home landed in the top ten percent of My InnerView’s customer database.

The award was presented at the Home in May.

“My InnerView is an independent assessment of how we are doing,” said Al Kaul of Lutheran Homes of Michigan’s corporate office. “As such, it’s a great tool we use to make sure we are doing a good job for seniors, their caregivers and their familes.”

This is the second consecutive year a Lutheran Homes of Michigan site has won the award. Lutheran Home Monroe won it last year.
