L 0-3 v Kenston — The first-ever meeting between the Bombers and us was supposed to be played away, but their turf wasn’t installed in time for this contest. A penalty kick nine minutes in, a garbage goal four minutes before half and a rip from 25 yards out in the final minute began our season on the wrong foot. This was the first-ever varsity game for 13 of the boys on our roster.

L 0-2 v Chagrin Falls — Conceding a laser shot from 30 yards out, seven minutes in was not the ideal start. Zack volleyed off the bar from a Triplett cross a few minutes before half - it would have been nice to be tied going in to the break. We played better in the second half, and they scored their second with five left after we pushed up another attacker in an attempt to equalize.

L 0-1 @ West Geauga — We had more shots (9-5). They had more yellow cards (3-0). They scored the only goal of the match on a questionable penalty kick - wasn’t the foul OUTSIDE the area? - and we just couldn’t put the ball in the Wolverines’ net.

W 2-0 v Firelands — Baldi scored our first goal of the year - it only took 275 minutes - as he headed in a long throw from Stanton. Triplett got the second on a dribble and rip in the second half. Want some stats? 27 shots for us, two for them. 11 corners for us, one for them. Both were season-highs - the totals and the differentials.

D 0-0 @ Westlake — This was one of our most complete matches of the year. 80 minutes of fight, commitment and teamwork kept the eventual co-SWC Champion Demons frustrated and goalless. And we did it with two starters leaving the game injured. What a great Saturday night!!!

W 5-1 v North Ridgeville — After so much difficulty scoring, this night we broke out in a big way. Moskwa scored with his left foot!! Then so did Triplett. Then Travis poked in a corner kick. In the second half, Brendon sandwiched two corner-kick headers around a Rangers’ free kick strike.

L 1-2 v Avon — This was the first of three consecutive one-goal losses. Our sleepwalking act in the first half saw the Eagles with all kinds of possession, but frustrated and goalless. We woke up and played much better in the second stanza, but the visitors went ahead on a free kick 14 minutes after the break. Baldi tied it seven minutes from time off a long throw from Stanton… but a seeing-eye strike from the far right corner of the box made it to the bottom left corner of our net with three minutes later to make the final margin.

L 2-3 @ Lake Catholic — Triplett’s opportunistic strikes - one, a cheeky lob from about 35 yards out and the other, a poke to capitalize on miscommunication between the Cougars’ goalie and sweeper - put us up 2-0 after 25 minutes. But LC clawed back to 2-1 before half; 2-2 after an hour; and won it in the final minute on a hit-n-hope volley.

L 0-1 v Holy Name — Three consecutive one-goal losses… jeez! The Green Wave scored in the sixth minute on a free kick. We pretty much dominated the rest of the match, but could… not… score. On another note, Steve got a “rellow,” as did one of their players… and so did their ciaci (yes, that’s how you spell “CHA-chee”) goalkeeper coach. It was an entertaining game… but a result that was tough to swallow.

W 5-0 @ Midview — Every time we scored, the ball went from a Pirate head to the Midview net, a school record for header goals in one match. Baldi scored a header hat-trick, Triplett dished out three assists, Kenny scored his first of the year and Brendon got a goal on his birthday. We peppered the Middies’ goal with 24 shots and Ian locked up his third shutout of the season.

L 2-3 @ Lakewood — On a windy and cold night on Bunts Road, the Rangers’ “men” taught us a lesson about passing and movement both on and off the ball. We were down 2-0 at half, thanks to two brilliant strikes from #4 in white and purple, and he finished off his hat trick after the break. We won the second half, thanks to a free kick from Stanton and a header (?) by Garibaldi (?) off a long throw from Triplett.

W 2-0 @ Vermilion — Our second straight opponent in purple and white put up less of a fight than the previous one, but it wasn’t a walk in the park for us. Kenny’s goal after nine minutes finished off a nice passing sequence from Trip to Kegan at left mid, whose cross was dummied by Baldi on its way to #16’s right foot. Our second goal was a Triplett cross/shot that was turned into the net by a Sailor defender. Too bad for them.

L 1-4 v Revere (#4 D-II in Ohio) — Solid at every position, the Minutemen needed only two minutes to get off to a 1-0 lead. It was 3-0 at half, and 4-0 in the 70th minute, but Stanton let rip from 52 yards out to keep us from getting blanked. Ian made 10 saves and Patrick made one, but nobody could save enough Chick-Fil-A sandwiches for all the varsity boys and coaches. Bummer.

L 0-1 v Bay (#1 D-II in Ohio) — We played one of our best games of the season and went toe-to-toe with the Rockets, but we didn’t react fast enough to a rebound, which they stuck in for the difference. Ian made ten saves for the second straight game.

L 1-2 v Wellington — Down 1-0 in the 66th minute, Triplett headed in a cross from Kegan to knot the match. But the Dukes scored their second with about ten minutes remaining. We threw everything at them but the kitchen sink and nothing went in. A very frustrating loss.

L 0-1 @ Fairview — The hosts got an early goal and rode their luck to a victory, as we missed a penalty for the second time this season and had periods of decent possession, but came away with nothing. Not a very pretty soccer game.

[SECTIONAL PLAYOFF] W 3-1 v #8 seed Vermilion — Brendan headed in Stanton’s corner a minute into the game. They tied it on a penalty kick four minutes later. Baldi made it 2-1 on a header from a Stanton free kick two minutes later. We sort of put it in cruise control for the final 20 minutes of the first half, but awoke in the second, with Travis heading in a Stanton corner to make it 3-1 three minutes after the break. We continued to knock on the door, but just couldn’t get in throughout the rest of the game. Two yellow cards for us was a season-high. For shame!

[SECTIONAL FINAL] W 1-0 @ #3 seed Elyria Catholic — On a cold night, on a muddy field, we did everything right on D and held out for just one goal to see us through. Moskwa’s cross from endline right to the far post was nodded back into the middle by Nate, where it hopped up for Travis (Or was it Patrick?) to smack into the lower right corner of the net. I knew they wouldn’t score on us. We played too well to let that happen. We earned this victory!!!

[DISTRICT SEMIFINAL] W 2-0 @ #2 seed Avon — Wow. Yet another game for the ages. This one had it all - fantastic finishes, sweet saves and nearly-converted opportunities. Avon nearly scored in the first half, but thanks to the left post and to Ian, nada. Kegan hammered in a flicked-on corner kick in the 33rd minute to give us an advantage at the break. After a couple Avon calls for a handball PK earlier in the half, Triplett ripped in a rebound off of yet another Stanton corner with seven minutes to go. Incredibly timely goals. LOTS of defending in the second stanza - Ian made two jaw-dropping saves off of Avon’s All-Ohio midfielder in the final ten minutes to preserve the victory. Again, I knew they wouldn’t score on us, thanks to our textbook team defending.

[DISTRICT FINAL] L 1-2 @ #1 seed Bay — We gave the Rockets all they could handle for 71 minutes, including a 1-0 deficit thanks to Nick Van Atta’s wondergoal in the 25th minute. The lead was our first against Bay since 2000 - the last time we beat Bay. But the defending district champs got two in two minutes with nine minutes remaining in the game. We tried furiously, but just couldn’t beat their All-Ohio goalkeeper again. A tough way to end both the match and the season, but everyone can be proud of how we finished the season.

A FINAL NOTE... I knew that we’d become a better team because of those eight one-goal regular-season losses. I knew that if we could get timely goals, we’d be a handful in the playoffs. I knew we could make a run to the District Final. I said it in our playoff seeding meeting and I meant it: we were the best 4-11-1 team in the state. Vermilion and EC and Avon and Bay found that out. What made this group special is that it really fit every definition of ‘team.’ The boys seemed to genuinely enjoy doing just about everything together - the activities in practice, CORE work, team meals, pre-game stuff, post-game stuff, etc. As a coach, when you have a group like this one, it makes a season like ours and a playoff run like ours just that much more enjoyable. I am really going to miss this group of seniors. For all four years, except Trav and Nate, obviously, those guys were always great to work with. Their dedication and hard work will be hard to replace. I was really happy with what I saw from the juniors and sophomores. It’s important to realize that we had thirteen boys play meaningful varsity soccer for the first time this season, and eleven of them will be back next year. I’m sure that they’ll be building off the experience they got in 2009 as they work hard in the offseason to prepare for the fall of 2010. I’d like to thank the following people in writing for helping make this season as successful as it was: all 33 players in the program for working hard all fall; the boys’ parents for letting your boys be a part of the team; my assistant coaches for helping the boys improve their skills daily; the RR schools and RRHS administration for giving us a place to play the world’s most beautiful game; the maintenance department for taking care of our fields, stadium and locker room; the athletic training staff for helping take care of the boys when they got battered and bruised; RRSO for giving the youth in our town opportunities to develop their love affair with soccer; the Lanzens for doing a great job announcing; Coach Gillespie for helping me be the best coach I can be; and last but not least, my fiancée for supporting me in every way possible.

Thanks again!! I’ll never forget the 2009 season!!!
