    I Formation This is the basic offensive formationwhere the Fullback andRunning Back line up

    directlybehindthequarterback.Itismainlyusedforrunningtheballupthemiddleofthefield(hand

    offs)butcanalsobeusedforothertypesofplays

    TFormationThisissimilartotheIformationexceptthattheFullbackandRunningBacklineup

    PassingFormationThereareseveralpassingformationsthatcanbeusedbybringingtherunning

    backsoutofthebackfieldandhavingthemlineupaswidereceivers.Splitmeansthattherearetwo

    receivers,oneontheleftsideoftheoffensiveline,theotherontheright.DoubleLeftmeansthatthere

    aretworeceivers,bothontheleftsideoftheoffensiveline.DoubleRightissimilarbuttotheright.We

    canalsocalltripleleftorrightwherewehavethreereceiversontherightorleftsideoftheoffensiveline.

    Youcanalsocombinethesesuchasdoubleleft,splitrightwhichmeansthatwewillhavetworeceivers

    MotionPriortosnappingtheball,wecanlineupthereceiversorrunningbacksinonepositionand

    thenhavethemgoinmotionandmovetoadifferentposition.Thiscancauseconfusioninthedefense.

    Anexampleisasfollows.

    PassingTreeOnceweknowthepassingformationwewanttousethenweneedtocallthepattern

    thatthereceiversaregoingtorun.Abasicsystemfordesignatingthepatternsthatthereceiverwillrun

    isthepassingtree.Thepassingtreeestablishesnumbersforthedifferentdirectionsthatthereceiver

    willrunpriortoreceivingapass.Thepassingtreeisasfollows.

    Thepassingpatternsarecalledbystartingwiththeleftmostreceiveronthefieldandworkingtowards

    theright.Eg.iftherearetworeceivers,wecouldcalla25.Thiswouldmeanthattheleftmostreceiverwouldruna2patternandthenextreceivertotherightwouldruna5pattern.

    4 DEFENSEFiveManLineFormation Thebasicdefensive formationisthefivemanline.Therearefivedown

    defensive lineman and they line upnose to nosewith the offensive lineman, This formation is good

    againstanyrunsupthemiddleofthefield.Thedefensiveendsareresponsibleforoutsidecontainment.

    FourManLineFormationThefourmanlinehasfourdowndefensivelinemanandtheylineupin

    thegaps betweentheoffensivelineman, Thisformationisgoodagainstanyrunsupthemiddleof the

    fieldand forgettingpressureon the quarterback.The outside linebackers are responsible foroutside

    containment.

    ThreeManLineFormationThethreemanlinehasthreedowndefensivelinemanandtheylineup

    headtoheadwiththecenterandinthegapsbetweentheoffensiveguardsandtackles.Thisformationis

    teams.

    KickOffFormationThekickoffformationisusedwhenevertheballiskickedtotheotherteam(at

    thebeginningofthehalvesorafterateamscores).Theteamlinesupbehindthekicker(approximately10yardsfromwheretheballisteedup)andrunsdownthefieldoncetheballiskickedtotacklethe

    playerontheopposingteamwhorecovers the football.Theimportantpartofthekickoffis tostay in

    yourlanes(ierunstraightdownthefieldsothatthepersonreturningthekickdoesnothaveopenfieldto

    runin).

    KickOffReturnFormationThekickoffreturnformationisusedwhenevertheballiskickedbythe

    otherteam(atthebeginningofthehalvesorafterateamscores).Theteamlinesupaminimumof10

    yardsfromwheretheballisteedupandisspreadoutacrossthefield.Oncetheballiskickedthenone

    playercatches the ball and the remaining players on the team attempt toblock the other team from

    tacklingtheplayerwiththeball.Itisimportantfortheentireteamtoknowwhichdirectiontheperson

    receivingtheballisgoingtorunsothattheycansetuptheappropriateblockingformation.

    PuntFormationThepuntformationisusedwhenthe teamwasunabletomove theball10yards

    down the field in two downs. On the thirddown theyelectto punt the balldown the field.Thepunt

    formationisverysimilartoaTwomanbackfieldexceptthatthequarterbackisreplacedbythekicker

    andhelinesupwellbehindthelineofscrimmage.Thecenterthendoesalongsnaptogettheballtothe

    kicker.Thekickerthenpuntstheballandtherestoftheteampursuestheballandtacklestheplayeron

    theopposingteamwhocatchesit.It isimprotantfor theplayers tostayintheirlanes(just likein the

    kickoff)sothatthereislessroomfortheplayerwiththeballtorun.

    PuntReturnFormationThepuntreturnformationisusedwhentheoffensiveteamwasunableto

    movetheball10yardsdownthefieldandelectedtopunttheballontheirthirddowntothedefensive

    team.Thepuntreturnformationcanuseanyofthetypicaldefensiveformationsexceptthatoneortwo

    playersarebackdeeptoreceivethepunt.Therestoftheplayersattempttobockthepunt (priortoit

    beingkicked)andthenrunbacktoassisttheballcarrierbyblockingtheotherteamsplayers.Thereturn
