GEO focuses on Community Capacity Building and Empowerment. Project/activities overview GEO's mission is to facilitate one million good stoves in 5 years (2008 to 2012), in partnership with Community, Support Organizations, Scientists and funding agencies. GEO is also into research and development of Good Stoves, so far has developed 15 good stoves, which are declared as creative commons. GEO shares its knowledge and experience on good stove technologies through websites created, provides online support and conducts capacity building programs. Every day on an average 200+ people from different parts of the world are accessing the knowledge created by GEO on good stoves. Every week at least 4 people seek online support on Good Stoves technologies, some of them in turn are adding their knowledge and skills in improving the Good Stove designs. Currently, GEO is creating a resource center for research and development of good stoves and also one enterprise center for production of 5000 stoves with community participation. Results reporting GEO is working in partnership with a network of organizations covering about 100 thousand families on Good Stoves for facilitation and dissemination in parts of India. All the research and development on good stoves was self funded till date. GEO could facilitate more than 300 Good Stoves directly. It is helping communities in different parts of the world through sharing designs, technology, knowledge and experience. Awareness on good stoves is created to the people in rural areas on the availability of efficient technologies for cooking through field level demonstration of the stoves. Participating in the meetings conducted by the Government to share ideas on Good Stoves need and facilitation through various existing government programs. In this year initiatives are being taken up to facilitate 5000 Good Stoves. The charcoal from the Magh series woodgas stoves is being used for improving the fertility of the soils although on a minor scale, but has multiple benefits including carbon sequestration. Next steps, goals, commitments GEO will continue its efforts in achieving the one million good stoves mission through direct and indirect approaches. Work for policy and advocacy change in rural energy and especially for promotion of good stoves, continue research and development of Good Stoves and dissemination of knowledge and experience. Facilitate Capacity building to communities, micro-enterprises development with community groups, share the experience in seminars, conferences, workshops, groups and networks, and partner with organizations or agencies. GEO will continue research and development of Good Stoves. http://www.e-geo.org Chencu Tribal Woman cooking on Magh-1 t-lud woodgas stove Lambada Tribal Woman cooking on three stone stove A forester in the Himalayas using Magh-1 t-lud woodgas stove

GEO is contributing to the following areas RURAL ENERGY, TERRA PRETA, ENVIRONMENT, CLIMATE CHANGE (Mitigation and Adaptation), SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE, WATER, DISASTER MITIGATION AND ICTs.

Aim of GEO is to Innovate, Facilitate and Implement practical Science based next solutions that help achieve Equilibrium between Human and Natural Systems, promote Earth System Governance and Sustainable Development for the betterment of Communities and towards realizing its objects. GEO focuses on Community Capacity Building and Empowerment.

Project/activities overview

GEO's mission is to facilitate one million good stoves in 5 years (2008 to 2012), in partnership with Community, Support Organizations, Scientists and funding agencies.

Results reporting GEO is working in partnership with a network of organizations covering about 100 thousand families on Good Stoves

for facilitation and dissemination in parts of India.

Next steps, goals, commitments

GEO will continue its efforts in achieving the one million good stoves mission through direct and indirect approaches.

Adaptability and Sustainability of GOOD STOVE technologies is ensured based on the following aspects

Acceptability : The stoves designed should be according to the peoples utility, culture and aesthetics.

Biomass : Flexible use of different types of locally available biomass and less requirement of biomass as compared to existing stoves.

Cost : Relatively recurring low-cost for fuel, maintenance and also stove.

Design: Easy to construct and maintain.

Ergonomics : Sitting posture before the stove should be convenient

Flames : Good Heat transfer to the pot – Conduction, Convection and Radiation and greater control of heat as per requirement and Less loss.

Greater Safety : Safety from heat and flames to women, children and whole family.

Health : Very less smoke from the stove, it should not affect the health of user and their family.

Interest : Communities interest in adopting GOOD STOVES should developed through awareness.

Joint technology : Apart from Community, Government, Support Organizations’ and Scientists role is envisaged in development and dissemination of good stoves.

Knowledge : Through Capacity Building Programs communities knowledge on the advantages of a Good Stove should be propagated.

Life : The life of a stove should be considerable as compared to the existing stoves.

Monitoring : There should be monitoring and feed back for improvement of technology and it is a continuous effort.

No smoke : No smoke or very Less smoky stoves should only be used, smoke is the major cause of Health impacts, less efficiency, Global warming, etc.

Operation : The stoves operation should be easy and the user should be able to cook all types of traditional food.

Participatory Technology : Technology development should be Participatory incorporating local community Knowledge for successful adaptation.

Quality of the Stove : Stoves should be long lasting preferably made with locally available good quality material.

Research : Research should be focused on simple, affordable (low cost), accessible and efficient Good Stove technologies.

Skills : Easy to operate and use the stove and skills should be imparted to youth, women and local masons in construction of stoves.

Technology : Technology should strive for increasing efficiency of the stoves in use.

Utility : Optional designs should be made available, which improves the utility and adoptability of the stove.

Versatility : Spatial (Geographic), Temporal, socio-economic, environmental, human skills aspects should be considered for designing the stoves.

Weather : The stove should be durable and be rustic to the local weather conditions.

X – Researchers should strive to discover the ‘X” unknown factor’s for improving the energy efficiency in stoves.

Youth : Youth should be given top priority for creating awareness and should be trained on construction and maintenance of Good Stoves.

Zeal : Zeal for a common cause and to be part of mitigating climate change should lead for active participation of all stakeholders in developing, facilitating and using Good Stoves.
