FOR 2009, MMNY INTRODUCES THREE EXCITING NEW WAYS TO JOIN THE JUNE 21ST FESTIVAL.

BRONX

MAKE MUSIC NOW!

musical Instrument Petting Zoo: MMNY and THE TIMES SQUARE ALLIANCE will close Music Row (W. 48th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues) for a Musical Instrument Petting Zoo. Music stores on the

block will set up drum sets, keyboards, guitars, woodwinds, brass, and strings on the street, for passersby to listen to, learn about, and test drive. Professional musicians will stop by to give short lessons throughout the day. All musicians and non-musicians are welcome. 12 – 6 pm.

Mass Appeal: Twenty-two groups of musicians that play the same instrument will band together at venues across the City to perform massive pieces arranged especially for them. From accordions to veenas,

saxophones to guitars, anyone can bring their own instrument along and join in.

Mass Appeal events are marked throughout the program, in the same color as this box. If you are a musician and you’d like to join the band, visit WWW.MAKEMUSICNY.ORG/MASSAPPEAL for full details on what to do.

musical Handshake: At the end of the day, these Mass Appeal “tribes” will gather in Central Park to share a “Musical Handshake” – a way for diverse instruments to greet each other, and begin improvisational

conversations. This year’s handshake was written by singer/harpist ELISSA WEISS, who based the motif on a birdsong she heard last summer. Say hello to your fellow musicians with this:

CBGB may be gone, but the spirit of NYC punk is alive and kicking hard.

See for yourself at the 2nd annual PUNK ISLAND, Sunday, June 21 on Governors Island, when Make Music New York transforms the ordinarily quiet outpost into a punk/hardcore paradise.

Over 70 bands will appear on twelve stages scattered around the island, as free ferries transport revelers from the Battery Maritime Building at the tip of Lower Manhattan to Governors Island.

Just like the rest of Make Music New York, all performances are outdoors and completely free.

Punk Island begins at 11 am and ends at 5 pm sharp. Ferries leave every 30 minutes from the Battery Maritime Terminal, adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry in Lower Manhattan. Take the 1 train to South Ferry Station, or the R train to Whitehall St. Station. The ferry to Governors Island is free. No alcoholic beverages, pets, or weapons are permitted.
