Head Coach Dean Hayes Throughout the recent history of Middle Ten-nessee track and field, there have been two constants – vet-eran coach Dean Hayes

and a legacy of championship perfor-mances. A renowned track and field coach both in college and professional circles, Dean Hayes has gained great respect since coming to Middle Tennes-see 44 years ago . His men’s teams dominated the Ohio Valley Conference, and the women’s teams have duplicated that success since Hayes took over the program in 1987 . Both squads have continued their successes in the Sun Belt Conference, capturing 15 of the 34 indoor and out-door titles for which they have been eligible since joining the league seven years ago . Overall, Hayes has guided the pro-grams to 29 OVC titles, 15 Sun Belt championships, and 18 NCAA Top 25 finishes. Forty-eight of his athletes have earned 82 All-American honors, four have become national champions and a number of them have gone on to compete internationally in the Olympic Games, World University Games and Pan-American Games . There could have been more awards, but Middle Tennes-see did not sport a track program from 1987 to 1990 . Hayes has added 13 Sun Belt Coach of the Year awards to complement his 15 OVC Coach of the Year honors, which included 10 in a row from 1977 to 1986 . He was inducted into the Blue Raider Hall of Fame in 1982 and the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 . Hayes became a member of the Illinois Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 and was

inducted into the Mason-Dixon Athletic Club Hall of Fame in March 2005, and in December 2008 he was inducted into the U .S . Track & Field and Cross Coun-try Coaches Association Hall of Fame . In May 2009, a formal dedica-tion took place to rename the outdoor track faciilty in his honor as the Dean A . Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium . The announcement regarding the renaming of the stadium happened earlier in the spring, and the dedication was timed to coincide with the Blue Raiders hosting to the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships . Following the 1981 season, the Divi-sion I Track and Field Coaches Associa-tion voted Hayes the NCAA Outdoor

Coach of the Year . Hayes served as president of the TFCA in 1982-83 . In his first attempt at a Sun Belt Cham-pionship, Hayes delivered . The Middle Tennessee women took first place in Mi-ami, Fla ., in 2000, and Hayes earned his first Sun Belt Coach of the Year award. Since taking its place in the Sun Belt full-time prior to the beginning of the 2000-01 academic year, Middle Ten-nessee has captured 14 of the 30 league titles in indoor and outdoor track and field. Hayes and his charges were instrumental in capturing the school’s first-ever Vic Bubas Cup, the league’s all-sports trophy, in 2001, when the track programs garnered three SBC ti-tles. The teams played a significant role

Head Coach Dean Hayesin Middle Tennessee winning the Bubas Cup in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008 as well . Hayes has indeed put Middle Tennes-see on the world map in terms of col-legiate track and field. However, Hayes’ experience is not limited to the collegiate level . He has coached several teams sponsored by either the United States Olympic Com-mittee or USA Track and Field . His international experience began at the first Olympic Sports Festival in Colorado Springs, Colo . (1978), and has included working as the head coach at the World University Games in Kobe, Japan (1985); Goodwill Games in Se-attle, Wash . (1990); World Cup in Lon-don, England (1994); World Champi-onships in Athens, Greece (1997); and again at the Goodwill Games in New York City (1998) . The Naperville, Ill ., native also has served as an assistant at several inter-national meets. In addition to the first Olympic Sports Festival, Hayes worked as an assistant at the World University Games in Bucharest, Romania (1981), the World Championships in Helsin-ki, Finland (1983), and the Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea (1988) . Because of Hayes’ international suc-cess, numerous foreign athletes have sought out Middle Tennessee as their college of choice . Hayes’ most successful collegiate ath-letes at Middle Tennessee have com-peted in the NCAA triple jump, an event in which Hayes specializes . He coached NCAA champions Tom-my Haynes (1974) and Barry McClure (1972, 1973) as well as NCAA high hurdle champion Dionne Rose (1994) and his most recent national champion, Blue Raider Mardy Scales in the 100-meters (2003) . Hayes also guided Ro-land McGhee to nine All-American hon-ors, and both McClure and Greg Artis won All-American honors seven times .

Keith Vroman begins his sixth season at Middle Tennes-see and his second as a full-time assistant for the Blue Raiders . Vroman is currently in his ninth year of coaching and brings with him the experience of two distance running programs steeped in tradition, Eastern Kentucky University and Grand Valley State University . Vroman’s experience in distance running has helped the Blue Raider cross country teams make consistent strides in addition to strong showings during the distance events in

the indoor and outdoor track seasons . Seven men and three women have earned All-Sun Belt honors under Vroman’s tutelage, including at least one male in each of the last five years. Vroman was hired full-time during the summer of 2007 and helps in all areas of the program, including recruiting and meet management . The Ludington, Mich ., native earned his bachelor’s in physical education, his mas-ter’s in health education and an M .S . in sports administration at Eastern Kentucky, where he competed in cross country and the steeplechase .

Asst. Coach Keith Vroman

Asst. Coach Roger Kerr Middle Tennessee assistant track and field coach Roger Kerr has quite an extensive resume, which includes more experiences than most head coaches around the country . Then again, Kerr has a solid history as a head coach . The former head coach at Arizona State, Illinois State and Evansville is still involved in collegiate track and field competition for one simple reason – the Iowa native enjoys teaching and working with young athletes . In his 12 previ-ous years with the Blue Raiders, Kerr has focused much of

his energy on working with sprinters, hurdlers and weights . Kerr also deals with team equipment and helps with recruiting duties . Kerr earned his bachelor’s and master’s in physical education at the University of Iowa, where he was a three-year star on the track and field team. By the time Kerr graduated from Iowa in 1963, he held Hawkeye records in the 600 and 660 as well as a share of the indoor and outdoor mile relay . Both the 600 and 660 records stood for more than 20 years . Upon earning his master’s, Kerr became the head coach at the University of Evansville for both men’s track and field and cross country before moving on to Pur-due University . In his six years at Purdue, Kerr served as head coach of the men’s cross country team while working as an assistant to the men’s track and field pro-gram . Kerr also earned his Ph .D . in educational administration while at Purdue .

Led by Festus Chemaoi, the entire squad finished within 45 seconds of each other . Junior William Songock stole many of the early season headlines . The 2008 Sun Belt Outdoor track 5,000 meters champion did not lose a step over the summer, taking second place in his first two races. Songock finished one second behind winner Caleb Swartz of Belmont University at the Belmont-Vanderbilt Opener . The team placed second overall behind Belmont . The team then competed in four races that as tune-up opportunities: chances to run longer courses against stronger competition before taking the field at the Sun Belt Championships in Bowling Green, Ky . Highlights included a fourth-place team finish at the Memphis Twilight Classic and all male runners setting season-best times in an 8,000 meter race at the Greater Louisville Classic . Heading into the conference championships, Middle Tennessee was projected top team in the Sun Belt coaches’ poll. Unfortunately, the team finished third behind champions Western Kentucky and runner-up UALR after William Songock was unable to finish due to an injury . Festus Chemaoi and David Emery were named to the All-Sun Belt team for the first time in both of their collegiate careers .

Coming off a third-place finish at the 2007 conference championships, the Middle Tennessee women’s squad continued to enjoy success in 2008 . Led by 2007 All-Sun Belt Zamzam Sangau, 2007 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year Marla Bailey, and 2005 All-Sun Belt Ashley Comstock the team finished second in the conference, the highest since joining the league .

Like the men’s team, the women began the season at the Agnes Scott Invitational in Atlanta, Ga ., taking the top four finishing positions. Sangau led the women, taking first overall, with Comstock and Bailey taking second and third, respectively . Sangau continued her dominance throughout the season, earning top 10 finishing spots in five of the next six races including a first-place finish at the UTC Invitational with a time of 11:07 in the two-mile race . Teammates Bailey and Comstock also recorded top ten finishes at the UTC Invitational placing seventh and ninth, respectively . The women’s conference season ended at the Sun Belt Championships in Bowling Green, Ky ., where, as predicted in the SBC coaches poll, the team placed second overall behind host Western Kentucky . Sangau highlighted her season finishing second overall with Comstock finishing ninth for the second All-Sun Belt award of her career . The team concluded its season at the NCAA South Regional Meet, placing 17th with Sangau finishing 16th for her second straight All-NCAA South Regional Team accolade . Bailey and Comstock were the next Middle Tennessee finishers, placing 74th and 77th, respectively .

enhAncemenT The Student-Athlete Enhancement Center (SAEC) at MTSU houses the academic support system and the Blue Raider Athlete Skills for Success (B .R .A .S .S .) Life Skills Program for all 17 Division I-A sports . The center is housed at Johnny “Red” Floyd Football Stadium on Raider Drive . The facility opened its doors on January 4, 1999, to the delight of student-athletes, coaches and administrators . Blue Raider student-athletes can take advantage of the library-like atmosphere as they report for their required study hall hours under the watchful eyes of director Jim Rost; assistant director and coordinator of B .R .A .S .S . Wynnifred Counts, and assistants Debbie Carroll and Angel Nathan . The center consists of administrative offices, fully equipped individual and group tutoring rooms, a computer center, and spacious study carrels equipped with task lighting . Services provided by the center include help with registration and preregistration, help with study skills, and updates on NCAA legisla-tion . The center uses an innovative objective study table program, which includes daily mentoring and constant tutoring . Tutors in various subjects are scheduled in the tu-toring rooms throughout all hours of op-eration, and all tutoring takes place at the center . The SAEC staff is responsible for daily monitoring of the student-ath-letes’ progress, providing daily reports to coaches and meeting with the entire coaching staff weekly . The mission of the center is to help stu-dent-athletes take skills learned on the field and turn them into positive prepa-ration for life after college . The center is also committed to meeting the changing needs of student-athletes . It continues to promote partnerships between the Uni-versity, the NCAA, and the Murfreesboro community to help achieve its goals . In addition to providing the academic support needed to be successful in the classroom, the center is committed to meeting the needs of student-athletes in life skills development through the very popular B .R .A .S .S . pro-gram . As B .R .A .S .S . coordinator, Counts is dedicated to helping prepare student-athletes for life after college . Blue Raid-ers volunteer, when possible, to help teachers and students at elementary and middle schools throughout Rutherford County during the academic year . In 2006, the Athletic De-partment began a mentoring program with the city schools in which student-athletes and coaches help tutor kids . In the spring of each year, Special Olympics at Middle Tennessee uses Blue Raider student-athletes to run each event . Career night and substance and alcohol abuse semi-nars are yearly, well-attended events . The Student-Athlete Enhancement Center is just one way that Middle Tennessee is helping to prepare student-ath-letes for life after college .

Sun BeltconfeRence

While there are 31 NCAA conferences that sponsor mul-tiple sports, the Sun Belt is one of only eleven to participate in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) and Football Bowl Subdivision . The Sun Belt was formed in 1976 with six mem-bers competing in four men’s sports, and today comprises 13 institutions of higher learning while sponsoring 19 cham-pionship sports for men and women . The Sun Belt Conference entered its 34th season in 2009-10 with a proud history of athletic and academic success . The conference sponsors 10 women’s sports - basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball; and nine men’s sports - baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, swimming and diving, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field. Each of the 19 sports has seen numerous team and individual accomplishments, and 12 Sun Belt Conference schools are currently graduating their student athletes at a rate higher than their school’s student body . All Sun Belt schools are committed to excellence in the 21st century and facility upgrades and expansions are occurring on virtually every campus . Because of its status as a member of the Division 1-A football coalition, the Sun Belt Conference has a permanent seat on the NCAA’s 17-member Board of Directors . As a result, the conference has a crucial voice on some of the most pressing issues in college athletics and will always have a role in the implementation of any future NCAA legislation and guidelines . The conference continues to utilize television to grow and promote the league . Adding volleyball, baseball and softball to the conference’s television package has resulted in more national and regional television exposure for the league than at any time in its history . The conference’s regional television package enables live telecasts of Sun Belt events to reach over 20 million households . Additionally, ESPN televised the conference’s men’s basketball championship game for the 28th straight season in 2008, marking its longest affiliation with any conference in the country. The Sun Belt Conference has partnered with JumpTV Sports, Inc . to deliver a full-service, customized, public and premium web site to provide fans with a broad range of real-time information and content about the conference’s athletic teams . The Sun Belt is one of the few conferences in the nation to provide video highlights and features on its web site from each of the league’s respective championships . This technology is a great recruiting tool: enabling anyone in the world with internet access to view the conference’s championships. Fans in five different countries viewed the conference’s most recent soccer championship . The Sun Belt Conference is led by Commissioner Wright Waters, who is in his ninth full year as commissioner . He was named the conference’s fourth commissioner in February of 1999 following the tenures of Vic Bubas (1976-1990), Jim Lessig (1990-1991), and Craig Thompson (1991-1998) . The league’s annual all sports champion is awarded the Vic Bubas All-Sports Cup, named after the conference’s first commissioner . The conference office has been headquartered in downtown New Orleans since 2000 after moving from its surburan location of Metairie, La .

spoRTs medicine Health care is one of the most important aspects of a stu-dent-athlete’s life, and no university is more committed to keeping athletes healthy than Middle Tennessee . The Sports Medicine facility provides MTSU student-athletes with one of the finest athletic training facilities in the nation. Head Athletic Trainer Drew Shea and the Sports Medicine staff have set liberal hours to make sure each student-athlete has his or her needs met . The Sports Medicine facility opens at 6 a .m . each morning and doesn’t close until all student-athletes have been treated . The Sports Medicine facility contains a complete injury rehabilitation center, new rehab equipment, two full-size whirlpools, a dressing area for athletes, and a private office for the team physicians . In the summer of 2008, the facil-ity added new Mondo Ramflex flooring which will provide a safe and healthy environment for the student-athletes . There is no waiting in the Sports Medicine facility since there are nine taping stations, multiple state-of-the-art modalities, and a new rehabilitation area . All of the equip-ment in the facility is top of the line . Athletes can use a full-stride treadmill, a stairmaster, and an exercise bike during their rehabilitation . One of the most recent additions to the equipment is a $15,000 K-Laser which helps speed up the healing process, enabling student-athletes to return to com-petition at a faster rate . The latest piece of equipment that aids the Sports Medi-cine staff is a new state-of-the-art computer system that tracks injuries, rehab protocols, medications, and surgeries . The new computer system allows each ath-letic trainer to keep student-athlete rehabilitation programs moving forward at as rapid a pace as pos-sible . The facility also contains a fully stocked physician’s examination room for the resolution of any minor is-sues that a student-athlete have, which saves time for both student-athletes and staff . There is also a C-Arm portable X-Ray machine on site . Shea and his assistants each have an office in the Sports Medicine facility, and there is work space for the nine graduate assistants. Each office is self-con-tained, allowing private consultations with injured student-athletes .

Strength and

condiTioning One of the biggest changes in college athletics over the past few years has been the attitude toward strength and conditioning . Performing in the weight room has become just as important as on-the-field competition, and Middle Tennes-see has one of the very best staffs in the nation committed to making student-athletes the best they can be . It all happens in the Blue Raiders’ 10,000-plus square foot weight room facility located adjacent to the north end zone of Floyd Stadium and designed for use by all Middle Tennes-see student-athletes . It is a strength training area that rivals any in the country . The weight room has been described by many people as better than any in the immediate area, in-cluding those at SEC and Conference USA schools . The facility, which opened in January of 1999, greets stu-dent-athletes with over 20,000 pounds of plates and dumb-bells, but the sheer volume of weights is not the most impres-sive aspect of the room . It is equipped with nine full power racks, nine elevated platforms, and nine half-racks . Hammer strength equipment rounds out the room with five ground-base jammers, a dead lift, a leg press, a leg curl, and a leg extension . Other Hammer strength equipment in the facility includes a bench press, a military press, a rowing machine, neck machine, pull-up, and pull-over . An impressive array of dumbbells is also provided for the student-athletes’ use . Two sets each of dumbbells rang-ing from five to 150 pounds are kept on racks around the room . Mirrors ring the walls of the room to help student-ath-letes ensure that they are using proper form throughout their workouts . Cardiovascular equipment such as treadmills and stationary bikes are also available . Other state-of-the-art amenities may also be found in the weight room . A television with cable and a state-of-the-art sound system has been installed for the enjoyment of the student-athletes. Three offices for the strength coaches are located in the facility, along with restrooms and a hospital-ity area . The weight room also provides direct access to the football stadium, gameday room, and individual meeting rooms and is in close proximity to the Blue Raider Practice Complex . The gameday room is used not only by the Blue Raider football team on game days and for film break-down but also for press conferences, classes, and other functions . The meeting room is fully equipped with high-tech audio/visual equipment to enhance learning .

Director of Athletics • 5th year • Northern Colorado, 1983 The landscape of college athletics

has changed drastically over the past decade and that renovation also has been demonstrated at Middle Tennessee, particularly during the four-plus years since Chris Massaro was named director of athletics on April 8, 2005 .

Proving to be a true visionary, Massaro has helped revolutionize the Blue Raiders’ Athletic Department while helping pave the way for even greater success in future years .

During his short but highly successful reign, Massaro has overseen unprece-dented success not only in the University’s athletic programs but also in regard to

academic success, facility upgrades, and a proven record of hiring coaches who have thrived under his watch . Under Massaro’s leadership, the Blue Raiders have captured the Sun Belt’s all-sports trophy three times in five years. Since his arrival, Massaro has enhanced the Blue Raiders’ broad-based, 17-sport program . Among the accomplishments included in the last four years: • The Athletic Department has captured 18 Sun Belt Conference champion-ships and earned 12 coach of the year honors . • The athletic program has had a record 15 nationally televised events during his four-year tenure . • Middle Tennessee’s football team earned an at-large invitation to the Motor City Bowl in 2006, the first bowl appearance during the Division I era. • The women’s volleyball team reached the Sweet 16 for the first time in 2007 . • The men’s golf team received its first-ever at-large invitation into the East Regional in 2008 and subsequently advanced to the National Champion-ship, where they finished 15th in the country. They backed up that effort with another NCAA regional in 2009 . • The women’s basketball team appeared in back-to-back NCAA Tourna-ments in 2006 and 2007 and returned again in 2009 . The team narrowly missed reaching the Sweet 16 in 2007 after earning a No . 5 seed . • The Middle Tennessee tennis doubles team of Marco Born and Andreas Siljestrom won the National Championship in 2007 – the first NCAA doubles title in Athletic Department history . • The Middle Tennessee track teams have combined for four conference . titles. The 2007 men’s outdoor squad finished No. 21 in the nation while the 2009 women’s indoor team ranked tied for 30th . • The Blue Raider baseball team captured the regular season and tourna-ment championship in 2009 and advanced to the NCAAs . Massaro’s success at Middle Tennessee doesn’t stop with the athletic teams . There has been a tremendous track record for hiring quality coaches, with head football coach Rick Stockstill, women’s head basketball coach Rick Insell, and men’s golf coach Whit Turnbow – and all Massaro hires – each earning Sun Belt Coach of the Year in their first seasons, and men’s tennis coach David McNamara won the Sun Belt and Coach of the Year honors in his second season . In all, Massaro’s guidance has provided coaches with the resources to produce 18 conference titles, 19 NCAA postseason appearances, one Sun Belt Conference Athlete of the Year, and 12 Coach of the Year awards . Academic enhancement has also skyrocketed under Massaro’s leadership . Massaro, who was appointed to a panel on APR Improvement Plans for the 2007 NCAA Convention, inherited a football program with a national-low score of 812 and saw it increase to a current 990 (on a 1,000-point scale) in 2009 . As a whole, the Athletic Department has improved from a 908 score when Massaro was hired to an impressive cumulative (four years) score of 951 in 2007-08 . All 17 Middle Tennessee sports teams achieved passing marks of 925 or higher in 2006-07 with four teams turning in a perfect mark of 1,000 . In 2007-08, 16 of 17 teams topped the 925 mark . Massaro, who spent 20 years at the University of South Carolina prior to his appointment at Middle Tennessee, also overhauled the annual Blue Raider Ath-

letic Association’s annual giving program, which resulted in a record number of members and financial giving in 2008, indicating the fourth such year record numbers have been realized . The annual campaign has improved 40 percent since his arrival . Facility upgrades also have been at the top of Massaro’s impressive list of accomplishments . He completed a $6 million capital campaign for the new baseball stadium and initiated a series of major renovations to existing athletic facilities during the previous three years, including a state-of-the-art soccer and track complex . Most recently, a state-of-the-art golf performance center was completed in December 2008 . In the midst of numerous upgrades, Massaro also has initiated generous contributions that made it possible to install a new synthetic surface in Floyd Stadium for the 2006 season . Additionally, new videoboards – one for foot-ball and two inside Murphy Center – were installed in 2007 . In a span of four years, Massaro’s hiring practices have been regarded as excellent. On Dec. 12, 2005, he made his highest profile hire when he selected Stockstill to take over the football program . Stockstill became just the second head coach in the I-A era and led the Blue Raiders to a league championship and a bowl appearance in his first season. Two days following his hiring, Massaro was pressed into action to find a replacement to lead the nationally recognized women’s basketball program . Massaro made his first hire when he brought on board legendary high school coach Rick Insell to take over the program . Both Insell and Stockstill won cham-pionships in their first seasons on the job. Massaro has also made a significant upgrade in the Blue Raider football schedule . During the summer of 2005, he announced a home game in 2007 that made Virginia the first team from the highly regarded ACC to visit Floyd Stadium . He quickly added a second ACC member when Maryland agreed to make the trip to Murfreesboro in 2008, and the Blue Raiders rewarded him with a 24-14 upset . On his 100th day on the job, Massaro made one of his biggest announcements: a five-year contract with the University of Memphis to play football that started in 2007 . The Tigers will become the first in-state Division I-A (FBS) football team to play the Blue Raiders in Murfreesboro . Massaro has also worked out a home-and-home series with Mississippi State that will see the Bulldogs coming to Floyd Stadium in 2009 – making them the first SEC program to play in a Sun Belt stadium – and nearby Georgia Tech that will have the Yellow Jackets coming to Murfreesboro in 2011 . In March 2008, Massaro made another big move when he announced a four-game series with neighboring rival Vanderbilt of the SEC . The series begins in 2015, and the teams will play twice in Murfreesboro and twice in Nashville . The Glenwood Springs, Colo ., native joined the South Carolina staff under the Ohio University sport administration program in 1985 . Massaro helped usher the Gamecocks into the SEC and learned under legendary athletic direc-tor Dr . Mike McGee . Massaro earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Northern Colorado in 1983 and his master’s degree in sport administration from Ohio University in 1986. At UNC, Massaro was a five-year football team member . Massaro is also heavily involved in community ser-vice projects and organiza-tions . He is a member of the Red Cross Board, the City Golf Commission and the Rutherford County Sports Council Executive Commit-tee, and he served on the search committee for the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce president . Massaro and his wife, Cindy, have four children: Hank, Lainey, Rachel, and
