Kindel furniture is 100% made in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and has operated continually in the factory

Winterthur offers a rare combination of beauty, history, art, and learning. Nestled in the scenic Brandywine Valley of Delaware, Winterthur is the former home of Henry Francis du Pont, a scion of the family whose industrial achievements played a significant role in American history.

The estate was home to the three generations of the du Pont family from 1839 to 1969. Opened to the public in 1951, Winterthur now provides guests a magnificent mansion, working farms, naturalistic gardens, priceless antiques, and a view of what a country farm and estate were like in America’s past. Winterthur is home to more than 89,000 American period objects found in over 175 period rooms spanning in time from 1640 to 1840.

Mr. du Pont’s goal of educating a nation about its remarkable heritage through its objects and lifestyles continues today. The museum holds over 500,000 books and printed materials on the subject of American decorative arts. Its degree program in American Material Culture is universally acclaimed, and many of the top scholars in the field are Winterthur graduates.

Kindel selected the best-of-kind examples of Queen Anne, Chippendale, Federal and Empire furniture to be included in this collection. The complexities and details of these examples must be executed by a company whose skill and craftsmanship match those of the original artisans. Kindel, with its Grand Rapids craftsmen and women, embodies that company.

Winterthur Museum Collection

Mount Vernon is one of the best documented historic homes in America. Mount Vernon is owned and maintained in trust for the people of the United States by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, a private, non-profit organization founded in 1853 by Ann Pamela Cunningham. The estate, gardens, and farm of Mount Vernon totaled some 8,000 acres in the 18th century. Today roughly 500 acres of this historic estate have been preserved 16 miles south of Washington, D.C., on the banks of the Potomac River. The Mount Vernon collection also includes a collaboration of pieces from Tudor Place. The Tudor Place, built by Martha Washington’s granddaughter, Martha Custis Peter and her husband Thomas Peter in 1816, remained under ownership of the Peter family for six succeeding generations until 1983. Located in Georgetown’s historic district, this National Historic Landmark is a house museum distinguished for its neoclassical architecture, decorative arts collection including over 100 objects from George and Martha Washington’s Mount Vernon, and 5 1/2 acres of gardens.

The Mount Vernon Collection from Kindel is inspired by the family of America’s most famous general and president, George Washington. In association with the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, Kindel has created a collection of reproductions and adaptations of furnishings owned by the Washington family.

Dorothy Draper is America’s original interior decorator, establishing the first interior design firm in the United States in 1923. She pursued public commissions that brought her acclaim. Her work on behalf of such institutions as New York’s Hampshire House, San Francisco’s Mark Hopkins Hotel, Hollywood’s Arrowhead Springs Hotel and West Virginia’s Greenbrier Hotel exemplified her as a pioneering businesswoman and the most famous decorator of the 1930s and 40s.

Draper’s style was big and bold. She invented Modern Baroque and is known for her oversized plasterwork and dramatic use of vibrant color. Many of the pieces in this collection are designs from her corporate work as well as her own apartment at The Carlyle in New York.

Today the design firm of Dorothy Draper and Co. in New York exists under the direction of President and Owner, Carleton Varney. Carleton Varney was a protégé of Mrs. Draper and infused the Dorothy Draper Collection with his own style and vision. Varney maintains Draper’s archives and espouses her design philosophy: “the use of bright colors and the rejection of all that is impractical, uncomfortable and drab.”

Our Classic Additions incorporate new and old, from archives to adaptations all within the framework of classic design. Our goal is to bring the classics to today’s lifestyle to live with tradition in an updated way. We offer today’s consumer generations of style and design from our past.

We continue to add new styles, finishes, exotic veneers and wood species to complement our other furniture collections. Whether it is a reissue from the 1950s or an adaptation of an existing pattern, Kindel has earned a reputation for being the source for classic design.

Classic additions Collection

The Knowledge Collection from Kindel evokes a more relaxed and simple feeling. The design is elegant, but understated. Classical elements are visible in the shield back of the dining chairs and the graceful sweep of the table legs.

While the design reflects simplicity and elegance, the craftsmanship is still bench made with hand-crafted details including pin striping, and hand-painted decoration. The woods are American Cherry and Cherry veneers, Poplar and Sycamore.

Knowledge COLLECTION

The Neoclassic style is one which has endured in America since the late 1780s. Intellectually, Neoclassicism was symptomatic of a desire to return to the perceived “purity” of the arts, and the more vague perception “ideal” of Ancient Greek arts. Neoclassic furniture reflects refined designs often based on classical architecture. Design elements include, the American eagle, the ellipse, swags, scrolls, urns and columns. The style reflects the nationalist aspirations of the time.

The Neoclassic Collection from Kindel draws inspiration from the founders of this style in America: Thomas Jefferson, Samuel McIntire, Thomas Seymour, George Hepplewhite, Thomas Sheraton and Duncan Phyfe. This Collection from Kindel includes sleigh back chairs, lyre back chairs, pedestal dining tables with hand-carved paw feet, hand-painted decoration, gold accents, solid brass ormolu and gilded carvings.

Neoclassic Collection

The 18th century showcased a range of classic style and design in opposition to the extravagances of 17th century baroque. Design of this period foretold elegance in life, yet exuded simplicity, balance, and harmony. Beauty was essential and quality was imperative, the introduction of Mahogany from the West Indies provided the perfect material for furniture craftsmanship.

Kindel’s 18th Century Collection ranges in styles from Queen Anne (cabriole legs and urn-shaped splats) to Chippendale (ball-and-claw feet, pierced slats, and bow-shaped crest rails) to Federal (tapered legs, swags, and inlays). These styles have the power to turn the most ordinary room into the center of civilized sociability and peaceful grace.

The 18th Century Collection is made with the finest Mahogany solids and veneers enhanced by bench-made details such as hand carving and flushing of joints. The finishes are all hand rubbed in the tradition of the 18th and late 19th centuries, and will age to develop the rich patina seen on many of today’s finest antiques. The designs are timeless and the 18th Century as a design category is one for which Kindel has been known for decades. Kindel continues to represent this category with superior aesthetic and unmatched workmanship.

This Mahogany dining table has been adapted from a card table on display in the Phyfe Room. An urn-shaped central shaft is carved with acanthus leaves that lead to four sweeping legs, each carved with more leaves and flutes. Legs like these were popularized by Duncan Phyfe in the early 19th century and were copied by other New York cabinetmakers. The solid brass casters became popular at this time as well to prevent sharp corners from snagging woven carpets. There are several versions of this table, but shown here is the Phyfe-Style Dining Table with Satinwood Border. This table is also available with a Rosewood border, 83-018 or without a border, 83-016.

SEYMOUR DINING CHAIRS 83-082 Side Chair

These chairs have been adapted from the original chair and settee made circa 1800 in Boston by the Seymours. The originals are on display in the Montmorenci Stair Hall. Kindel has applied upholstery to the front of the chair back for added comfort and has remained faithful to the overall design. The top rail features complex construction with contrasting Satinwood veneer on the solid Mahogany crest rail. This treatment is also applied to the flaring legs and seat rails. Hand-carved reeding, rosettes, and leaf carving adorn this chair. The back features the pierced splat that was typical of the Seymours’ work.

The original sideboard is a superlative example of New York craftsmanship between 1795 and 1805. This masterpiece resides in the du Pont Dining Room of the Winterthur Museum where Mr. du Pont entertained and dined. As complex as the exterior, the interior features two sectioned drawers for storing bottles. All of the larger cupboards and drawers lock for safekeeping. The contrasting woods and complex inlay are exemplary of exquisite 19th century design and cabinetry.

NEW YORK CHINA CABINET 83-054

This china cabinet has been reproduced from an original desk-and-bookcase that was made in New York, circa 1796. It is displayed in the Lake Erie Hall at the Winterthur Museum. Made from crotch and figured Mahogany veneers and Satinwood and Walnut inlay, this elegant cabinet features four doors and three drawers for ample storage. The top cabinet has four glass doors with Federal tracery that is also veneered. The adjustable glass shelves are framed in Mahogany. The pediment, adorned by brass ball finials, is standard and typical of the Federal period.

The original of this magnificent dining table was made between 1815 and 1819 by one of New York’s premier Neoclassical cabinet-makers, Charles-Honoré Lannuier. The original table is displayed in the Georgia Dining Room at the Winterthur Museum. The large top of highly figured veneer is supported by two pedestals that consist of four hand-carved, solid Mahogany columns. The S-shaped legs feature leaf-carving on the knees and hand-carved paw feet. Crotch Mahogany veneer graces the deep apron rails.

Kindel craftsmen have adapted the graceful armchair from a set of four matching side chairs that were made in Philadelphia for Thomas and Elizabeth Edwards. Although the total number of chairs in the original set is unknown, two identical chairs are in a private collection, and a seventh was sold at Christie’s in 1985 for $104,000, a record price. This chair typifies the genius of Thomas Chippendale who combined many styles to form his own which can be seen in the Chinese bow-shaped crest rail, gothic tracery of the splat, ancient acanthus leaves on the ears, and the French bell flowers. The details on each chair represent sixteen hours of hand carving.

EMPIRE SIDEBOARD 83-025

The Winterthur Museum purchased the original sideboard at Sotheby’s 1988 auction of decorative arts and fine arts from the estate of pop artist, Andy Warhol. The majestic sideboard was probably first owned by Rebecca Gratz (1781-1869) of Philadelphia and is attributed to cabinetmaker Joseph B. Barry. Kindel has adapted this sideboard from the massive original in The Empire Dining Room at Winterthur. The classical motifs of the reeded columns with acanthus leaf capitals, the lion’s paw feet and inset foliated panels are all hand carved. The unusual lion’s head drawer pulls are solid brass reproductions. Beneath the center drawer that is fitted with a silver tray, is a mirrored back panel. The gothic-arched doors lock.


PHILADELPHIA QUEEN ANNE CHAIRS83-072 Side Chair

Crafted in Philadelphia around 1760, these Queen Anne-style dining chairs were originally part of a larger set. The side chairs are solid Cherry, and the armchairs are Mahogany. Kindel has reproduced them in the same materials. The side chair features additional egg-and-dart ornamentation at the bottom of the splat and is considered by many scholars and collectors to be one of the finest examples of the Queen Anne- style in Philadelphia. Its mate sold at Christie’s in 2002 for $666,000, a world record for a single wooden side chair. The hand-carved elements (shells, volutes, acanthus leaves, and ball-and-claw feet) of Kindel’s reproduction have faithfully captured the appearance of the originals.

TUDOR PLACE SERVING SIDEBOARD 86-004

The original of this refined, circa 1900, Georgian revival sideboard resides in the parlor of Tudor Place. The curved front has two inlaid, frieze drawers flanked by two deeper drawers. Below the drawers are doors faced in highly figured swirled Mahogany that open to reveal an ample interior with one adjustable shelf. The legs, typical of this great period in American design, taper gracefully into spade feet. Kindel has crafted this adaptation of Mahogany solids and veneers with the finest brass hardware.

George Washington purchased a pair of this original sideboard from cabinetmaker John Aitken, in 1797. They are in the large dining room at Mount Vernon. Kindel’s reproduction captures the understated elegance of the Hepplewhite style original. Crafted of Mahogany solids and veneers, this masterpiece sideboard features subtle, yet elaborate, inlay work on the front of the doors and drawers and at the top of each leg.

Crafted circa 1797, the 24 Mahogany originals of these masterpiece dining chairs were purchased by George Washington from cabinetmaker John Aitken for use in the large dining room at Mount Vernon. The back splat’s classical urn is hand carved, and the overall simple and refined lines of the chair are typical of the Federal period. Kindel’s adaptations are crafted of solid Mahogany. Nail trim, as shown, is not standard.

Dorothy Draper designed the original of these chairs in 1945 for the café and rooms at The Greenbrier Hotel in West Virginia. The swirling lines of the back splat, the French inspired cabriole legs and curved lines of the side rails evoke the glamour of the times. From our archives, this chair was originally made by Kindel in the 1950's. The simplistic lines can be traced to the finest shops of Paris during the turn of the 19th Century. A slender baluster splat flows into the curved top rail. The down-turned back supports seamlessly connect the top rail to the front rail. Grecian saber front legs support the chair frame making this a truly timeless design.

This table is based on many popular turn-of-the-century desk forms which featured fluted legs and swags. The center of this table and the cross-banded border are of figured Mahogany and Satinwood. The inlays of the border are black, Maple, and Tulipwood. The fluted legs are topped off by solid brass rosettes. The swag carvings and feet are available with gilt leaf as an option (07).

This type of table was popular in America around 1820. The tabletop features a flat-cut Mahogany center with a wide border of select crotch Mahogany. A black and white inlay line separates the center top from the border. The original of this tea table, displayed in the Chinese Parlor, was made between 1785 and 1800 in the shop of John Townsend, one of America’s premier shops in Rhode Island. The original of this Mahogany desk and bookcase, made for the Updyke family in the 1770s, is one of ten block-fronted examples drafted by members of the Townsend and Goddard families of Kingston and Newport, Rhode Island. Block fronting, or the raised-recessed-raised triad of panels with the shell as an integral part of each, is considered to be uniquely American. The last one remaining in private hands was sold at Christie’s on June 3, 1989 for $12.1 million, a world record-breaking price. The hand carving represents 37 hours by meticulous Kindel craftsmen to achieve the beautiful and precise look of the original. Seventeen drawers and six compartments line the desk, and the ten separate sections in the bookcase are channeled to allow numerous subdivisions.

This table features the uniquely American birdcage mechanism which joins the piecrust top to the shaft and allows the tabletop to either rotate freely, or be tilted up for easy and attractive storage against the wall. The legs represent the perfect S-curve of the times. Between 1985 and 1989, two closely related objects sold at Christie’s for prices in excess of $1,045,000 and again in 1995 for $1.6 million. Kindel’s reproduction is faithful to the original and requires 23 hours of hand carving to achieve the high level of ornamentation.

Large pinwheel drawer pulls made of cast brass in the shape of a flower, characterize this chest of drawers designed by Dorothy Draper. The dramatic curve of the top line along with the high scroll arms and serpentine front combine to make this sofa an American masterpiece. The solid Mahogany tapered front legs are joined by stretchers to the rear legs that rake backward sharply and add to the strength of the design. Often called a lolling or a Martha Washington chair, this solid Mahogany armchair is a reproduction of the original made around 1795 in Massachusetts. The arms and front legs are ornamented with string hand inlay characteristic of late-18th century Federal-style furniture.

The original of this Bergére easy chair was made between 1805 and 1815 in Philadelphia and is displayed in the Sheraton Room of the Winterthur Museum. The high curved barrel back is surrounded by exposed Mahogany rails that lead to the solid curved arms terminating in acanthus leaf carving and rosettes. The front legs are turned and reeded, and the rear legs rake backward adding support and drama to this magnificent design. The seat has a loose cushion.

The original circular easy chair from the Winterthur Museum was made between 1804 and 1815 in Philadelphia. The original of this reproduction lolling chair is on exhibit in the Lafayette bedchamber at Mount Vernon and is considered to be one of the more unusual forms of the period. Circa 1815, this Neoclassic lounge chair features a sleigh back and scroll arms. The rear legs continue the design of the back post, and the turned front legs are reeded in the center. There is a carved shell where the arm joins the back post. Hand painted gold pin striping is standard on the back posts, the scroll arms and on the top of the legs. The turned legs and arm details are standard in gold paint. The ormolu mounts are solid brass.

The Philadelphia Easy Chair with hand-carved solid Mahogany legs is a reproduction, circa 1750, from the Winterthur Museum. Like many of the finest Queen Anne-style chairs made in Philadelphia in the mid-18th century, this one features backward-raked stump rear legs, and arms made of two scrolls, one vertical and one horizontal, which meet to outline a flat C-shaped scroll. The arm must be hand carved by Kindel craftsmen to accurately reproduce this C scroll. A closely related chair was sold at Sotheby’s in 1986 for $1,175,000.

This Kindel reproduction from the Winterthur Museum is hand-crafted of solid Mahogany and is faithful to the original made in New York between 1810 and 1820 by Duncan Phyfe. The fine reeding on the scroll back, the seat, padded arm and arm supports duplicate the superb reeding found on the original. The curvilinear shape of this chair was inspired by the Stella Curulis or folding stool with “X” shaped base, found on ancient Roman magistrates’ chairs. The ottoman, 83 is an interpretation specifically designed to compliment the chair.

Furniture Care

PRESERVING YOUR FURNITURE

Wood is a natural product. Sun bleaching will occur when

wood furniture is exposed to sunlight. This will cause darker

finishes to lighten and sometimes cause lighter finishes

to darken. For this reason, try to avoid placing furniture

in direct sunlight and rearrange accessories from time to

time to prevent spot bleaching. Some bleaching will occur

under both incandescent and fluorescent lighting. Arrange

your furniture so that it does not sit near heat registers, air

conditioning units or radiators. Close contact with any of

these will adversely affect the finish.

At Kindel we have always believed that “less is better” when

caring for furniture. Do not use silicone waxes, lemon oil,

or other oily polishes. Silicon can damage the lacquers and

make future refinishing very difficult. Lemon oil and other

oil based polishes attract dust and grit, causing scratches

in the finish. Our finishing technique is the most refined

in the industry and does more to protect the wood than

any wax can.

For general cleaning, use a mild soap and water. Then dry

the piece furniture immediately with a clean, soft cloth.

Wood furniture requires dusting with a soft, lint free cloth.

Dusting should occur frequently, using a clean dusting

cloth that will attract dust without scratching the finish.

Kindel Furniture Company has long been known for beautiful finishes. The steps involved in finishing furniture at Kindel requires various hand operations: filling the pores of the wood, glazing the surface to add color, hand padding to reveal grain patterns, highlighting to accentuate the veneer’s beauty, and rubbing finishes to create sheen. All of these steps are accomplished by experienced craftsmen and women at Kindel, however, some variations in these processes may occur. As well wood grains and veneer patterns vary.
