    Idaho State Volleyball Quick Facts

Why the Bengals? How did Idaho States athletic teams become the Bengals, when there just arent any to be found in the region? A good question. Originally, when the school was the Academy of Idaho in 1902, the schools athletic teams were dubbed Bantams, and it stayed that way until 1917, when J.A. Fogt became head football coach. Now Idaho Tech, the teams nickname was changed to Tigers, in part due to Ralph Hutchinson, who was the Director of Physical Education and Athletics. Hutchinson was a graduate of Princeton (the Tigers), so he founded the schools first booster club, the I Club, and brought the Tiger mascot with him. When the school became the University of Idaho-Southern Branch in 1927, the nickname switched to Bengals, although many newspaper and yearbook accounts refer to the team by both Bengals and Tigers. The freshman teams during this time suffered the unfortunate distinction of the nickname Kittens. As a branch of the University of Idaho, the schools colors were black and gold, just like the Vandals, and although the official colors switched to black and orange sometime in the 1940s, the football team wore black jerseys with gold trim through the 60s. The squad also used red numerals for a while in the late 1940s, and the squads 1970 home jerseys were more red than orange. It wasnt until 1971 that a truly orange jersey was used by the football team for the first time. The schools official colors are black and orange (PMS 165), and the trim color is gold (PMS 137), a small remembrance to harken back to ISUs rich history.

    ABOUT IDAHO STATE UNIVERSITY

Idaho State University is a Carnegie-classified doctoral research and teaching institution that draws students from around the world. It meets the growing demand for higher-education services with seven collegesArts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Health Professions, Pharmacy and Technologyand a graduate school. Together, they offer nearly 280 certificate, bachelors, masters, doctoral and post-doctoral programs. ISU is the state-designated lead institution for health-professions education. Founded in 1901 as the Academy of Idaho, Idaho State University initially offered college-prep and industrial courses. In its first 100 years, the school underwent considerable

growth and change. Forty students were enrolled in Pocatello in 1902; today, about 14,000 students attend classes at the main campus and at centers around the state. More than 2,000 graduate annually. Idaho State Universitys role in higher education has grown dramatically. In 1927, legislation was passed making it the University of IdahoSouthern Branch. In 1963 it became Idaho State University. At that time there were 3,500 students,

four colleges offering six bachelors and eight masters degrees, and a trade and technical school with 14 programs. Current enrollment includes about 2,500 students attending ISUIdaho Falls, and more than 2,500 attending classes at ISUBoise, ISUTwin Falls, and centers in American Falls, Blackfoot, Coeur dAlene, Hailey, Preston and Soda Springs. Located in Pocatello, ISU is a short distance from several prominent recreation areas, foremost among them Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, and Sun Valley. ISU students enjoy unrivaled outdoor activities, from skiing to backpacking, bicycling, river-running, and fishing in Idahos famous blue-ribbon trout streams. The original campus consisted of a four-block area of

8 1/2 acres donated by the citizens of Pocatello. Today, ISU has 105 buildings and 1,103 acres. The university offers cultural events and athletic programs featuring local, national and international participants.

The Idaho Accelerator Center at ISUs research park allows for researchers and national laboratories to

    utilize special nuclear facilities.

The clock tower is one of the newer additions to the Pond Student Union Building, which houses ISUs official bookstore, several dining

options, a game room, a billiards hall, and a

    bowling alley.

The columns on Red Hill are a Pocatello landmark. They are atop of Red Hill, which overlooks Davis

Field, which is home to Idaho States track and Volleyball programs.

The newest addition to the campus is the Rendezvous Center, which will house apartment-

style student housing, a dining hall, and classrooms, and the building is seen as a bridge

between the upper and lower campuses.

This view of the quad was taken from the Pond Student Union Building, and it showcases the beauty of both Idaho State and Pocatello. The trees located in

the center of the picture are part of ISUs Arbor Walk, and the

mountains that border Pocatello to the east majestically watch

    over the campus.

Idaho State University has grown through five name changes: the Academy of Idaho, 1901-1915; Idaho Technical Institute, 1915-1927; University of Idaho-Southern Branch, 1927-1947; Idaho State College, 1946-1963. ISU has an abundance of top-flight academic programs, including nationally acknowledged courses of study in business and pharmacy, and state-designated leadership in the health professions. The university has been ranked among the national leaders in the Certified Public Accountants (CPA) examinations for the past decade, with pass rates more than three times the national average. The statistics are based on students taking the exam for the first time. As Idahos center for education in health professions and with supporting physical and biological sciences, Idaho State University offers degrees in dental hygiene, dietetics, health-care administration, nursing, radiographic science, and speech pathology and audiology. Also offered are masters programs in education of the deaf, nursing, physical therapy, and speech

pathology and audiology. A doctorate is available in clinical psychology. ISU is a leader in educator preparation, offering bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in teacher education, educational administration, family and consumer sciences, physical education and dance, school psychology, special education, and vocational teacher education, occupational-training management, and corporate training. Neighbor to the Idaho National Laboratory and home of Idahos first university-related business and research park,

ISU has a continuing emphasis on business, engineering and the liberal arts, helping maintain a solid base for other academic disciplines. Overall, ISUs students take part in more than 280 certificate and degree programs in the college of Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Health Professions, Pharmacy and Technology. If ISU doesnt have exactly what a student is looking for, the Office of Individualized Education oversees programs that provide students the opportunity to design a degree in a field not formally available at ISU. Such students can earn Bachelor of University Studies, Bachelor of Arts in General Studies, or Bachelor of Applied Technology degrees.

The Swanson Arch is one of the oldest pieces of architecture on campus.

Incoming freshmen enter the campus through the arch, and they exit after graduation. The arch is also on the

official university seal for Idaho State.

The Stephens Performing Arts Center is the jewel of Southeast Idaho. Universally lauded for its

design and acoustics, the building is the premiere concert hall in Idaho.

The Marshall Rotunda of the Stephens Center features a mariners compass replete with engravings marking the

    major donors to the facility.

ACADEMIC SERVICES Every academic institutions first responsibility is to prepare its students for the best opportunity to graduate with their fullest potential. Idaho State understands this responsibility very well and instituted the Student-Athlete Support Center for its student-athletes, to enable them to balance the time requirements for both academics and athletics with the ultimate goal of obtaining their degree. Under the direction of Nancy Graziano, and assisted by a strong and caring staff, the Student-Athlete Support Center provides a variety of services with that in mind. The centers function begins even before a student-athlete sets foot on campus with transcript evaluation, and continues in helping the newcomer make the transition from high school or junior college to college. When they arrive at ISU we want it to be a positive experience, Graziano says. The Student-Athlete Support Center serves as a liaison for the student-athlete to all services

available to the student population as a whole, including but not limited to career counseling, the counseling and testing office, the academic skills center, the registrar, financial aid, the placement office, postgraduate scholarships, and any other student services. The office also provides tutoring, helps the student-athlete stay on track for graduation and NCAA eligibility, provides advising on general education courses until a major course of study is selected, and helps with career choices with the idea in mind that a college education can be more meaningful when a career is decided on. The office also makes presentations on drug and alcohol awareness available to the student-athletes. Even though our graduation rates are good, we are constantly striving to improve them, Graziano says. The creation of the Student-Athlete Support Center is a positive step in that improvement.

The refurbished Student-Athlete Support Center was dedicated in 2003 and is located on the south side of Holt Arena. As part of the refurbishment, student computers and additional space for academic counseling were added, bringing added benefits to the students. The department continues to expand, as in 2008, an expanded study center in Turner Hall was opened. The new center was funded with a $40,000 grant obtained

by Matt Steuart from the NCAA. The new study area features over a dozen computer stations, a quiet room, and has available tutoring for the student-athletes.

Athletic Training and Injury preventionISU SPORTS AND ORTHOPEDIC CENTERIdaho States athletic facilities had already boasted of the first domed stadium capable of housing both football and basketball ever constructed on a college campus, as well as Americas fastest indoor board track. With the June 1994 opening of the Sports & Orthopaedic Center at ISU, they include the premier weight training facility in the Big Sky Conference. The 25,000-foot Center includes a 6,800-foot state-of-the-art weight training area that is reserved strictly for Idaho States student-athletes. The area has weight lifting stations, stationary bicycles, and aerobics equipment, as well as an on-site strength and conditioning coach. The Center also houses the offices of Drs. Tony Joseph, M.R. Mickelson, ISUs team physician, Steve Coker, Kenneth E. Newhouse, the offices of The Pocatello Physical Therapy Clinic with physical therapists Ric Benedetti and Dan DesFosses, and an alumni, recruitment and educational center with meeting and classrooms. It was built at a cost of $2.5 million.

The Center is a joint venture of ISU and the Portneuf Medical Center and was 14 months in construction. It is a major milestone for ISU in fulfilling its mission as the states lead institution for health care education. It serves as an educational and training facility for health sciences students, faculty, area health care providers, and the community. The Center is beneficial for ISUs student-athletes in numerous ways, aside from the enormous benefit of the areas premier weight training facility being next door to Holt Arena. First and foremost, student-athletes have immediate access to physicians and therapists as well as the equipment used in treatment and rehabilitation. The Center was built at no cost to the public. The privately-financed structure will be leased to PMC and after the two 20-year land leases have expired, ownership is transferred back to Idaho State University.

    REED GYMNASIUM

REED GYMNASIUM HISTORYThe newly renovated Reed Gymnasium has served as the Bengals home court since the programs inception. The facility has helped the Bengals to a .550 (181-148) winning percentage over the years. From 1986 through 1990, the Bengals were 52-6 (.897). The best home record belongs to the 1987 team which finished 15-0 at home. From 1994-96, the team went 23-8 (.742) at home.

Seven years ago, Reed Gymnasium underwent an extensive renovation. Included in the renovations was new seating for the entire arena, including chairback seats for the lower level. New locker rooms were built for all the teams that are housed in the facility. New scoreboards were installed on both the east and west ends of the arena and a new floor was put in as well. With the renovations, Reed Gymnasium now holds 3,241 spectators for Bengal volleyball.

The facility includes the largest indoor rock climbing wall on a college campus, a full training room and locker rooms. An attached recreational facility houses an indoor track, indoor tennis courts, and racquetball courts.

VOLLEYBALL TEAM ROOMISU recently renovated the volleyball team room with new carpet, murals, projection TV, theater surround sound, DVD, personalized player chairs, a couch, and many pictures of current and past players. The volleyball team room was made possible due to the support from the members of the Match Point Club.

Chad Teichert begins his second season at Idaho State. In his first season at Idaho State he led the Bengals to a 10-match win season, the first since 2006. He posted a 10-20

overall and 5-11 Big Sky record his first season with the Bengals.

Teichert brings to Idaho State over 25 years of coaching experience, both on the high school and club level. He is one of the top volleyball clinicians in the nation and one of the nations winningest high school coaches. Teichert has organized and conducted over 450 camps and clinics for players and teams at all levels, including high school, club, and collegiate level.

He was perhaps the most successful high school coach in Wyoming history, leading three separate schools for a cumulative record of 397-83 (.827), winning 10 state titles in 16 years, including a run of eight straight titles. Also including among his high school exploits was a 142-match winning streak in Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho. Teichert in his time sent several

athletes to Division I programs around the country. He also was an assistant coach with the National Junior Olympic Team, coaching several eventual college All-Americans and Olympians.

His teams at Cokeville (1983-93) Mountain View (1994-98) and Green River (1998-2000) combined to win 43 of the 65 tournaments they entered as well, a .661 tournament championship percentage.

Teichert, who left the coaching profession in 2000 to care for his wife Kristine during an illness, spent seven years as one of the foremost clinicians and teachers of the game. He developed and organized the highly successful State Champs Coaching Clinics, with coaches from Alaska to California to New York attending. He also

was a member for a time with the Mikasa National Advisory Board, and he worked with both Mizuno and Blocksport in securing sponsorships for the Wyoming All-Star match. He also has spent time coaching various club volleyball programs for both the AAU and USA club programs.

Teichert is a former student-athlete himself, having wrestled while at Brigham Young, where he graduated with a degree in physical education in 1982, with minors in history and English. Teichert qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 150-pound weight class in 1980. He has four children; Kami 23, Rondo 20, Tanner 16, Caleb 13. His wife Kristine passed away in 2000. Before his first season at Idaho State Teichert was married to the former Susan Bluemel of Lyman, Wyoming.

The bottom line with Chad is that he is a winner, he has made every program he has been in charge of successful and he will do the same at Idaho State University. The middle blockers that he coached were first and third respectively in the conference for hitting percentage and third and fifth in blocking. With his help the team was ranked 14th in the country in hitting and 24th in blocking.

    SEASON PREVIEW

Head volleyball coach Chad Teichert will begin his second season with Idaho State after a 10-win campaign last year for ISUs best performance since 2006. The Bengals will return four starters including Idaho States leading scorer Emily Waldron, leading blocker Sarah Carson and leading dig producer Paige Palmer. The Bengals have been working hard in the spring to continue the momentum felt toward the end of the 2008 campaign when ISU posted a four-game winning streak and a five-game home winning streak. As a team the Bengals have posted 23 double-double performances. Its hard to prophesize the future, but I think we will get off to a better start than we did a year ago. The girls have worked quite a bit this summer and weve got some pretty good talent on the floor, said head coach Teichert. Its always a new year. You think theyll do a certain thing, but you hope they rise above the level of expectation.

Idaho State returns two true seniors, Waldron and Kolay Mickelsen-Sutton, as well as redshirt senior Palmer. Waldron led the Bengals in points scored last season with 324 recording 278 kills for an average of 2.55 kills per game. She also led the Bengals in service aces with 35 and posted the second most digs averaging 2.73 per game. She is a physically

talented player who can pass serve, she is real quick so she can dig balls that some kids wont dig and shes got a good arm, said Teichert of outside hitter Waldron. Hopefully she will get on the ball and get on it quick and swing away, be in the right place on defense and maximize her talent because she does a lot of things quite well. Hopefully she will be one of the leaders. Mickelsen-Sutton returns to the floor after competing in 22 games for the Bengals last season earning 30.5 points at the middle blocker position. She averaged 1.14 kills per game and posted seven block assists. Redshirt senior and libero Palmer ended the

2008 season recording the Idaho State all-time single season digs record with 503 as she posted 23 digs against Montana in ISUs final match of the season. Palmer also notched 11 20+ dig matches and 18 service aces last season. Paiges best strength is passing and you have to pass through her to build or run much of an offense, said Teichert. If she can bring to the table what she can shes got some talent. The Bengals return three juniors, Carson, Britta Bartschi-Rhodehouse and Jenna Proost. Carson led ISU in total blocks with 97, seven of which were solo efforts. She posted 145 kills last season for 1.32 per game and recorded the best attack percentage of .243 of any Idaho State middle blocker or outside hitter. I think Sarah will even be better this year, said Teichert. Almost all the time she is a real level-headed girl, someone you can count on through thick and thin and has a lot of maturity. I think she will get better at virtually everything we ask her to do. Middle blocker Bartschi-Rhodehouse was ISUs second leading scorer recording 324 points. She averaged 2.15 kills per game hitting and posted the second most block assists for ISU with 70 notching five solo blocks. Shes got a good arm and if she can continue to improve in the attack and continue to improve in the block she will be a really good force for us all, said Teichert. Defensive specialist Proost returns to the backrow for ISU after playing in 59 games for the Bengals and averaging 1.93 digs per game for a total of 114 for the season. Returning sophomores include standout Jaclyn Hone, Karissa Legaux and Emily Beardmore. Hone was a pleasant surprise for the Bengals last season as she walked-on to the ISU squad and began to see playing time in the Big Sky Conference matches. Hone led the team in kills per game with 2.56 hitting 151 kills in 59 games. Solid in the backrow too she averaged 3.24 digs per game, the second most on the team. Legaux will be leading the setters this season after

sharing the position with senior Blakely Peppinger last year. Legaux posted 448 assists in 75 games for an average of 5.97 per set. She led the teams attack percentage with .271 making 25 kills and only six errors. She recorded 107 digs, 17 blocks and eight service aces. Beardmore, a 5-8 outside hitter, competed in 53 games for ISU posting 2.26 kills per game and producing 69 digs. She also made 14 blocks last season.

Idaho State signed two players for the 2009 season including junior transfer Haylee Thompson and freshman Breanne Van Every. Thompson, an outside hitter from Scottsdale Community College was named the Arizona Community College Athletics Conference Player of the Year in 2008 and the ACCAC Tournament MVP before helping her team to a seventh place finish in the National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament. Van Every who comes to the Bengals from Highland high school was named First Team All-Region for three straight seasons and First Team All-State in 2007. In her senior season she posted 410 kills with a .325 attack percentage, notched 110 total blocks and 303 digs. Im excited to have Breanne and Haylee aboard, said Teichert. We will have c o m p e t i t i v e practices and would like to

think that well have some players rise to the occasion in matches. The Bengals begin the 2009 season with three tournaments on the road to open a majority of their non-conference play. Idaho State opens Big Sky play on September 17 against Northern Arizona in Flagstaff.
