Gardner-Webb University (GWU), located on 250 acres in Boiling Springs, N.C., is a private, four-year, NCAA Division I institution affi liated with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. GWU enrolls over 4,000 students from 33 states and 34 foreign countries in undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs. GWU President Dr. A. Frank Bonner

Dr. A. Frank Bonner, in his fi fth year as the president of Gardner-Webb University, took offi ce on May 2, 2005, and was inaugurated on April 6, 2006. Bonner is no stranger to Gardner-Webb, having been a part of the University family since 1987. A native of Greenville, S.C., Bonner graduated from Furman University in 1969, has a M.A. degree from the University of Georgia and earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a faculty member and Associate Dean at Anderson College in Anderson, S.C., prior to beginning his career in Boiling Springs as Vice President for Academic Affairs. In 1992, Bonner was promoted to provost and senior vice president at Gardner-Webb, a post he held until assuming his current role in 2005.

After a comprehensive, national search for the university’s new president, chairman of the presidential search committee and the board of trustees, Frank Beam, said, “We came to the conclusion that we had the most qualifi ed candidate right here at the university.” Bonner succeeded Dr. Frank Campbell, who served Gardner-Webb University as president from October, 2002 until June, 2005. Active in civic life and in the community, Bonner has served on the boards of the United Way, the YMCA, and Communities in Schools, and he serves on the Cleveland County Sports Commission. He is a past chairman of the Cleveland County Chamber, a past president of the Shelby Rotary Club, and a Sunday School teacher and deacon at First Baptist Church in Shelby. Bonner is also a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. During Bonner’s time as provost, Gardner-Webb emerged as a vibrant institution for higher learning, offi cially moving from college to university in 1993. The institution’s academic reputation has steadily improved during Bonner’s time in Boiling Springs, with a tremendous faculty and consistently evolving curriculum. Bonner is married to the former Florence “Flossie” Black of Chester, S.C., also a graduate of Furman University. They are parents of two adult daughters and four grandchildren.

Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 13th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 28th year in athletics administration. The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU’s move to the Big South as a full member – which became official on July 1, 2008. Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in facilities and the addition of five new sports since arriving in 1997. A sixth sport, men’s swimming was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department.GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch’s arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last two academic years. Gardner-Webb’s final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Bulldogs’ student-athletes. GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating

Belmont University for the title. The Bulldogs also finished third in the men’s and women’s combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy. Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer team captured the imagination of faces across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and the NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifiers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Bulldogs in 2006-2007. Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football team, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984). After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Burch, 52, earned his master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and is a member of the faculty at Gardner-Webb. The couple has three children, Travis, a recent graduate of Furman University, Danielle, a sophomore soccer player at Brevard (N.C.) College and Amy (15).

The soccer fi eld, formerly known as Varsity Field, was renamed the Greene-Harbison Field in 2007, as it has received many upgrades since the fi elds inception in 1990.

Prior to the 2007 season, a permanent press box was built (left) with a video purch on top for both the home and visiting teams to fi lm the games. Also prior to the 2007 season, permanent seating (center) was put in at midfi eld to allow the spectators to be right in the action of the games.

2009 Season Outlook

The Gardner-Webb women’s soccer team was not overly thrilled with its inaugural year in the Big South Conference last season, and will look to change things around in 2009. The task will be a challenging one, as the Bulldogs, who failed to score on a consistent basis last season, will have to replace leading scorer and First-Team All-Big South selection in Angie Harvey, who graduated in the off-season. Yet the offense is not the only place in which the Bulldogs will look to fi ll holes, as Kara Krueger, Dara Goldstein, Cristin Yasinsac, Sarah Wyszynski and Kim Scercy are all gone. Krueger, a four-year starter, and Goldstein, made up the defensive third for the majority of the last two seasons for Coach Mounce’s squad, while both Goldstein and Yasinsac saw quality minutes in the middle for the Bulldogs a year ago. Wyszynski and Scercy combined to protect the goal for the Bulldogs in 2008, with Wyszynski being a mainstay in goal for the Bulldogs from her sophomore season on. However, there is high hopes for the 2009 squad, as the team returns seven players that scored at least one goal last season and a handful of veterans that are not only experienced, but have proven to be solid leaders on the fi eld for Coach Mounce. This is vital as for the second straight year the Bulldogs will be very young with 18 players on the roster being underclassmen. With one year of Big South Conference play under its belt and a combination of both experienced veterans and young exuberant talent, the Bulldogs will look to make a push in the Big South in 2009.

FORWARDS With the top-score departing for the Bulldogs in Harvey, look for senior Bailey Stevens to step up as a go to scorer for the Bulldogs in 2009. Stevens, who has seen time at both the forward and defensive positions over the last two seasons for the Bulldogs has proven she can fi nd the back of the net, scoring two goals as a sophomore before being moved to the defensive back line due to a rash of injuries to her fellow teammates. The rest of the offensive front will be comprised of underclassmen, as sophomores Paige Reagan, Megan Reimer, Tina Frost, Dawn Rollyson and freshmen Megan Frost, Mallory Adler, Sarah Morabito and Gabrielle Fennell should all see time upfront for the Bulldogs. Reagan, who was second on the team with two goals last season, and Reimer, who had one goal on the year, will both look to improve from their freshmen campaigns. Fellow sophomores Frost and Rollyson, who combined to score two goals a year ago, will also look to improve from a year ago, as both continued to see more playing time throughout the 2008 season.

MIDFIELD Perhaps the most experience for the Bulldogs will come from the midfi eld position, as senior Kasey Gladhill and juniors Melissa Battista and Sarah Keyser will all see playing time in the midfi eld for Coach Mounce’s squad. Gladhill, who has played in 57 games in her fi rst three years at GWU, including playing in all 19 last season, will continue to bring not only experience, but both toughness and intensity to the fi eld for the Bulldogs. Juniors Battista and Keyser both have played many minutes in the midfi eld for Coach Mounce and will look to compete for playing time there this season. Battista, who started 10 games last season for the Bulldogs has improved each and every year for Coach Mounce and will look to continue that trend in 2009. Keyser, who sat out last season, is a dynamic player that makes things happen from the midfi eld position, as she scored four goals and dished out eight assists in her fi rst two years at GWU. Depth at the midfi eld will come from a host of players. Sophomores Lauren Kelly, Megan Tremblay and Mackenzie Davis, who all saw a lot of playing time as freshman a year ago should all see quality minutes in 2009. Tremblay, who was named to the Big South All-Freshman Team last season, came on strong towards the end of last season, while both Kelly and Davis will compete for minutes in a crowded midfi eld. Newcomers Taylor Napoli, Jane Giesler, Michelle Jenkins and Adler have all played in the midfi eld at the elite club levels and will look to compete for playing time immediately.

DEFENSE While the Bulldogs lost both Goldstein and Kruger on its defensive back line, the experience and depth of the back line in 2009 is a confi dence builder for the Bulldogs. The defense will be led by seniors Karissa Jensen and Brooke Bull and redshirt junior Jillian Dean, as the trio have played in over 100 games for the Bulldogs over the last three seasons. Jensen, who has been a constant on the fi eld for the Bulldogs in playing in 57 games over the last three seasons, is a stopper and a great one-on-one defender. Bull, who played in both the midfi eld and defense last season as a junior transfer, is also a great one-on-one defender and is vital in the Bulldogs success in 2009. Dean, who appears to have fully recovered from an injury that caused her to miss the 2007 season, is a smart defender with size that can be a tremendous asset for the Bulldogs fi nal line of defense. Sophomores Stephanie Benshoof, Chelsea Hearne and Melissa Malone will all also see time in the defensive third for the Bulldogs, as all three bring height to the GWU defense. Benshoof, who played in and started all 19 games last season as a freshman for GWU, has very good footwork and will be a vital part of the Bulldogs success in 2009. Hearne, who played in 14 games last season, including manning the goal for the Bulldogs in two of those matches due to injuries, provides depth to the back line as she is very smart and sees the fi eld well. Malone, a tall defender as well, is good in the air and has gotten stronger from a season ago. Newcomer Melissa Fishbein, along with returners Davis and Frost, could also see time on the defensive side of the fi eld in 2009. While all three are considerably shorter than the previously mentioned defenders, the trio brings quickness, intensity and toughness to the back line.

GOALKEEPER With Wyszynski and Scercy both graduating, the Bulldogs lack experience at the goalkeeper position heading into 2009. Senior Jessica Tuggle, who played in 10 games last season, appears to be the front runner thus far. Tuggle recorded 52 saves a year ago and posted a 1.43 goals against average. However, depth is an issue for the Bulldogs as last season all three keepers were injured at one point. With that in mind in 2009, freshman Samantha Rupert could see plenty of time in goal for Coach Mounce’s squad. Rupert is a solid keeper with good hands. Hearne, who was the emergency goalkeeper last season, will again play that roll in 2009. Hearne did not allow a goal and recorded 10 saves in 144:38 minutes of action between the post last season.

SCHEDULE The Bulldogs will again face a challenging non-conference schedule in 2009, as GWU will play on the road at Western Carolina (Aug. 21), at Duke (Aug. 23) and at USC Upstate (Aug. 28) before heading home to host East Carolina (Aug. 30), the Citadel (Sept. 5) and Campbell (Sept. 7). GWU will then host the Border Classic in conjunction with Under Armor on September 11 & 13, taking on both UT-Chattanooga (Sept. 11) and South Carolina Upstate (Sept. 13) in the two day event. The non-conference slate continues with a home game versus Appalachian State (Sept. 18), a road trip to Dayton, Ohio to take on Wright State (Sept. 25), and then a home game against Francis Marion (Sept. 30). The Big South Conference slate kicks off with three straight home games against Winthrop (Oct. 3), High Point (Oct. 9) and Liberty (Oct. 11), followed by two road contests at VMI (Oct. 16) and Radford (Oct. 18). Gardner-Webb returns from the state of Virginia to play host to Presbyterian College (Oct. 23) and UNC Asheville (Oct. 25), then wraps up its conference and regular season with matches at Coastal Carolina (Oct. 29) and Charleston Southern (Oct. 31). The 2009 Big South Conference Tournament will be held on November 5-8 in Charleston, S.C. with games being played at the Blackbaud Stadium.

Since 1999, Gardner-Webb University’s women’s soccer program has been a consistent winner. Throughout their transition from a Division II program to a Division I contender, the Lady Bulldogs have won matches at a pace never before seen in Boiling Springs, putting together winning seasons in fi ve of the last eight years and winning at least eight games seven times. Much of the consistency can be attributed to head coach Kevin Mounce, who enters his 11th season at the helm of the Gardner-Webb program with the highest winning percentage of any women’s soccer coach in school history. Mounce made an immediate impact upon taking over the program in 1999, leading the Bulldogs to their fi rst winning season since 1992, and only their second since the program’s inception in 1990. He proceeded to produce winning seasons in 2000 and 2001, as well, marking the fi rst time in school history that GWU had put together three consecutive winning seasons. Mounce helped develop Gardner-Webb into a viable Division I program early in his tenure in Boiling Springs, as his teams posted an 11-9-1 record against Division I opponents

during GWU’s two-year provisional status. The 2001 season saw the Lady Bulldogs post an overall record of 15-6-1, setting a new school benchmark for wins and taking home the National Christian College Athletic Association championship in November. Following that tournament, Mounce was named NCCAA National Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year. While 2002 was a rare down season for Mounce at 5-12-1, national women’s soccer authority Soccer Buzz ranked Gardner-Webb second in the nation among fi rst-year Division I programs at the conclusion of the season. Mounce quickly got the Bulldogs back on track in 2003, rebounding with an 8-9-1 record and guiding GWU to its fi rst-ever spot in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship with a fi fth-place fi nish in the league. For his efforts, Mounce was recognized by his conference coaching peers as the A-Sun Coach of the Year. In 2004, Mounce again captained a run for the Bulldogs, leading his squad to a fourth-place fi nish in league play and another spot in the A-Sun Championship. This time, however, GWU didn’t just make the tournament, the squad advanced to the semifi nals with a win over Stetson in the opening round. Forward Leeanna Woodworth led the nation in scoring in 2004, earning A-Sun Player of the Year honors and shattering numerous school records in the process. Liz Kier and Maureen Foley also earned all-Atlantic Sun Conference honors in 2004 as the Lady Bulldogs had the type of season that successful

Head Coach Kevin Mounceprograms are built upon. The 2005 season featured four all-conference selections and one academic All-American for Mounce. Woodworth made the fi rst team for the second consecutive season, while Foley earned second-team accolades for the second straight year. Brittany Woods notched a spot on the second team after being named to the all-freshman team in 2004. Angie Harvey garnered a place on the all-freshman team. Woodworth also earned third-team Academic All-America honors. GWU posted a 5-3-2 record in A-Sun play, fi nishing third in the league. While starting several new faces and dealing with the departure of the school’s all-time leading scorer in Woodworth, Mounce and his staff started out 5-0 on the 2006 season. During the regular season the team, behind strong defensive play, recorded seven shutouts, which is the second most in a single season in school history. The Lady Bulldogs qualifi ed for their fourth consecutive conference tournament behind a 9-7-2 overall mark and a 3-4-2 league record, advancing to the semifi nals before falling to No. 2 seed Stetson. In 2007, Mounce’s team was ready for the challenge of being in the A-Sun for the program’s fi nal year. Despite facing arguably their toughest schedule in GWU’s history and having to deal with a signifi cant number of injuries, the Lady Bulldogs put themselves in position to make a run at the conference tournament by ending the season with a 1-0 victory over Campbell. However, GWU was forced out of the tournament on the last day of the season. The 2008 season saw the Lady Bulldogs make a transition, this time competing in its fi rst year as members of the Big South Conference. With 14 newcomers on the roster, Coach Mounce had his hands full in trying to get the team to come together as one. The young Lady Bulldogs, which played 12 games on the road in 2008, posted a 4-13-2 record overall. Senior Angie Harvey earned First-Team All-Conference honors, while freshman Megan Trembley was named to the All-Freshmen team. Harvey’s All-Conference honors marks the sixth straight season in which Mounce and GWU have had at least one student-athlete received postseason recognition. Under Mounce, Gardner-Webb has seen its scoring totals reach school-record levels. The Lady Bulldogs had four players score over 25 points in 1999 – including Kim O’Brien’s then school-record total of 44 (18 goals). In 2000, three players scored 16 points or better, led by Michelle Haas’ total of 31 points. In 2001, GWU had four players with six or more goals, including 12 by leading scorer Michelle Vander Vaart. The Bulldogs have had a pair of 20-point scorers in three of the last four seasons, with Woodworth emerging as one of Mounce’s most successful recruits throughout his time at GWU. Woodworth was second on the team in scoring as a freshman in 2002 with 20 points, and led the team in scoring as a sophomore with 27, good enough for third in the A-Sun. She fi nished with 59 points in 2004 and was complimented well by Kier, who netted 35 points of her own. She capped her career with 29 points during the 2005 campaign. A quality tactician and motivator, Mounce inherited a team in 1999 that had fi nished the previous season below the .500 mark. He promptly directed a young team to a then-school-record 13 wins and a spot in the South Atlantic Conference tournament fi nals for the fi rst time in school history. GWU topped national No. 1 Presbyterian in the SAC semifi nals, then

fell to Catawba in three overtimes in the championship game. With Gardner-Webb’s jump to Division I in 2000, Mounce repeated his magic. The Bulldogs fi nished their fi rst year at the highest level of college soccer with an 11-9-1 mark and fi nished third at the National Christian College Athletic Association’s national tournament in Florida. The 2000 campaign marked the fi rst time in Gardner-Webb women’s soccer history that a coach had posted consecutive winning seasons. With his team’s success in 2001, Mounce totaled 39 wins in only three seasons in Boiling Springs. Now with a 89-93-13 record in 10 years at GWU, Mounce is the school’s most successful women’s soccer coach ever. Mounce, who picked up his 100th career win in the 2003 regular season fi nale, now boasts a career ledger of 137-125-17 in two stops as a collegiate head coach – his current post at Gardner-Webb and as the head coach at Cumberland (Ky.) College in Williamsburg, Ky., from 1995-98. While at Cumberland, an NAIA school, Mounce directed the program to a single-season record for wins (19) and guided the 1997 team to the program’s fi rst-ever national ranking (15th). He also led the Indians to two consecutive regular-season conference titles in the Mid-South Conference (‘97, ‘98) and was named Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year in 1997 and 1998. His team was also the National Christian College tournament runner-up in 1997, and he was selected the NCCAA Region Coach of the Year in 1997. Mounce began his playing career at the University of Kentucky, and then fi nished his fi nal three years at Sue Bennett College in London, Ky., where he was team captain, defensive MVP, and an all-conference selection. After fi nishing his playing days, Mounce stayed onboard as an assistant and helped guide the Dragons to a small college national title in 1994-95. Mounce is the founder of the Hat Trick Soccer camp, a popular summer camp based out of Boiling Springs. He, and his wife, Amanda, along with their daughter, Peyton (2), and their new baby boy, Riley Noel, who was born on August 5, 2009 reside in Shelby, N.C.

Assistant Coaches

Sarah Currie enters her third season as an assistant coach on the Bulldogs’ staff. Currie, who spent two seasons as an assistant coach for UT-Chattanooga in the Southern Conference prior to coming to Gardner-Webb, will help the team’s progress while also returning to her home state. Currie’s responsibilities include the planning and running of practices, coordinating travel arrangements, and overseeing individual workouts. Currie also has the role of recruiting coordinator, where she monitors the communication between the school and recruits, in addition to identifying potential recruits. In the off-season, Currie works with the summer camps, including assisting with the planning, marketing and execution of the camps. Before taking over assistant coaching duties with the Mocs, Currie held an assistant coach position with Covenant Day School in Matthews, N.C.. During her time with the school, Currie helped planning and running practices. She was a member of the staff as the team won the NCISAA state championship in 2005. A collegiate standout that played on the inaugural women’s soccer team at the University of Florida, Currie helped the squad to the 1996 SEC title and its fi rst-ever NCAA Tournament berth as a center midfi elder. After two years with the Gators, Currie transferred to UNC-Charlotte to fi nish her eligibility at the sweeper position. Currie guided the 49ers to back-to-back winning seasons, advancing to the Conference-USA tournament both seasons. In her fi nal year, Currie’s team not only made the conference tournament, but also won the league title, earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament. The squad upended South Carolina by a 2-0 score en route to a second-round appearance. During her fi nal season, Currie earned all-conference honors, was the player’s MVP and was the team captain. Currie graduated in May 2000 from UNC-Charlotte with a bachelor of science in political science.

Lindsey Boldt begins her second season as a graduate assistant on the Lady Bulldogs’ staff. Boldt, who played four seasons at Iowa in the Big Ten, will primarily work with the goalkeepers. A three-time academic all-Big Ten selection, Boldt came to Gardner-Webb after a stellar career. During her senior season, Boldt started 13 matches in goal before suffering a season-ending injury. Despite her season being cut short, Boldt was fourth in the Big Ten in goals against average (0.86), third in save percentage (.810) and fourth in shutouts (six). During her fi nal two years in goal, the Hawkeyes posted a 9-3-5 record with her in the starting lineup. Boldt, a native of Wauwatosa, Wisc., brings a wealth of knowledge to Gardner-Webb after facing some of the toughest competition in the nation in addition to coaching at some top-notch camps while also being an assistant coach at Iowa City H.S. the last two years. Boldt graduated in 2008 from Iowa with a degree in communications and sports studies. She is pursuing her masters degree in sports science and pedagogy at Gardner-Webb.

2008 Season In Review

The Gardner-Webb women’s soccer team faced many challenges during its inaugural season in the Big South Conference. Head coach Kevin Mounce’s team was extremely young during the transition year into the new league and it showed at times. However, more often that not, the Bulldogs showed fl ashes of brilliance on the pitch, which means that the squad will be more than able to take on the challenges presented next season and conquer the opposition. Senior Angie Harvey garnered the most attention from many of the other teams and coaches, and it was evident as she picked up fi rst-team all-conference accolades prior to the Big South Women’s Soccer Championship. Harvey, an outstanding midfi elder, led the team in goals, assists and points despite missing multiple matches due to an injury during the regular-season opener. She also tied for the team lead in game-winning goals. Two of Harvey’s goals came via the penalty kick as well. A hard worker off the fi eld as well, Harvey was named the Big South’s scholar-athlete team. Newcomer Megan Tremblay earned a spot on the Big South all-freshman team after having a stellar rookie campaign. Tremblay, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., played in 18 matches on the season while starting nine contests. She notched one goal on the season for two points. The score came at the always diffi cult place to play, Buies Creek, N.C., as the Bulldogs took on Campbell during the middle portion of their schedule. After opening the year with a loss to Georgia Southern, the Red and Black bounced back in a big way against Southern Conference foe The Citadel. Starting a line-up that consisted of fi ve rookies and six newcomers, the Bulldogs put forth a fi ne

effort against The Citadel. In the 28th minute of play, freshman Paige Reagan fi red home a shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Just after intermission, fellow fi rst-year standout Megan Reimer posted her fi rst collegiate score en route to the 2-0 win. Both the offense and defense seemed to be clicking for Mounce’s team. GWU fi red 25 shots in the contest, 14 of them being on goal. The back line allowed just six shots on frame, all of which were stopped by transfer Jessica Tuggle. GWU’s offense struggled over the next four contests as the team was shut out in each match. After dropping the four matches by a combined six goals, the Bulldogs pounced on nearby USC Upstate, a former conference rival from a year ago in the Atlantic Sun. The Red and Black’s rookie Chelsea Hearne headed home the game-winning goal in just the 25th minute of play off a corner kick from junior Kasey Gladhill. Hearne, a formidable defender and goalkeeper for the Bulldogs, was inserted in the box for corner kicks so GWU would be able to fi nd her 6-0 frame in the air, giving the squad a better chance to gain possession and convert it into goals. A setback at East Carolina did not deter the Bulldogs from their goal of playing strong and hard in every Big South Conference match. During arguably the toughest portion of the Bulldogs’ schedule, the team would have to persevere as it squared off in the league opener at Charleston Southern Sept. 20. With the contest scoreless at intermission, Mounce injected some life into the team at the break. Nearly 16 minutes into

the fi nal stanza, Harvey banged home a ball that went off Jena Uvalle’s hands and hit the right post before fi nding the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Harvey then set up Reagan in the 81st minute for an easy goal inside the box for an astounding 2-0 advantage the Bulldogs would not relinquish. In goal for GWU was senior Sarah Wyszynski, who notched her second shutout of the season, with the fi rst coming at USC Upstate. Wyszynski stopped four shots to record her 12th career shutout, which is good enough for fourth on the list. The next match, which was at Campbell two days later, saw the Bulldogs drop a tough non-conference battle. However, during the contest, Wyszynski was also injured, forcing her to miss most of the rest of the season. Down 2-0, Kim Scercy went between the pipes and played a solid 42:14 to close out the match while GWU put a goal on the board, but was unable to tie it. Mounce’s team was unable to come out on the winning end over the next four matches, all of which were conference contests. The team’s fortunes started to turn around on Oct. 23, when the squad answered an early Liberty goal with one of its own 20 seconds later. Down 1-0, a GWU student-athlete was fouled in the box, allowing Harvey to take and connect on a penalty kick, tying the contest at 1-1. From that point forward, the Bulldogs played with more intensity and tenacity as they were once again on even footing with the opposition. At the 39:48 mark, rookie Tina Frost received a pass from Harvey and immediately played the ball on a slow, looping shot over the hands of Liberty’s keeper Ashley Nyholt, who could only attempt to run it down before the ball ended up in the

opposite end of the goal for a 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs would not give up the lead again as Tuggle stopped seven shots in the win. The victory gave GWU some much needed confi dence heading into Senior Day. Due to an injury just prior to the match, Scercy was forced to sit out the match in which she was slated to start. With Tuggle having a previous family engagement and Wyszynski being sidelined, Mounce turned to Hearne, who had played goalkeeper in high school. Hearne had a few minutes to prepare for the eventual Big South Conference champion Radford Highlanders, and played superbly. After getting one easy save in the early going, Hearne stopped three more shots en route to the 0-0 double overtime tie. Tuggle then led GWU to a 0-0 tie at High Point to close out the regular season. In similar fashion, Tuggle stuffed four of the Panthers’ shots in the contest. Due to the head-to-head win against Liberty, the Bulldogs played their way into the No. 8 seed, returning to the postseason for the fi rst time in three years. Although the Bulldogs dropped the fi rst-round match against Coastal Carolina, Mounce’s team was able to gain some valuable experience that will serve his 2009 squad extremely well. With 18 returners on the team, the Bulldogs will look to be a force next season. The Bulldogs return seven of their top eight goal scorers on the season and two of the top three student-athletes who led the team in assists. Combined with Tuggle in goal, who started 10 matches, and a highly touted rookie class, GWU will look to not only make the Big South Women’s Soccer Championship fi eld in 2009, but also take aim at its fi rst Big South Conference title.
