Welcome to the 2009 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Championships, hosted by Elmhurst College.

With the help and support of our fans, member institutions, administrators, coaches and student-athletes, the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin enters the 2009-10 academic year as its 64th season of competition, 24th for women’s sports.

The Wheaton women’s cross country team enters this season as the two-time defending conference champions, having won this event 10 times. The North Central men have won every CCIW championship dating back to 1974.

The CCIW, recognized as one of the “Best Small-College Conferences in the Nation,” has seen its share of success throughout its time, with 35 NCAA Division III national championships in 11 different sports won by our member schools.

Since the 1991-92 academic year, the CCIW has remained consistent in its membership with eight academically superior institutions, including Augustana, Carthage, Elmhurst, Illinois Wesleyan, Millikin, North Central, North Park and Wheaton. In 2007, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, located in Terre Haute, Ind., joined the CCIW as an associate member for men’s and women’s swimming.

The CCIW, which sponsors 21 sports, has carried a long tradition of excellence dating back to its inception in 1946, helping student-athletes grow in their athletic as well as educational experience. The CCIW looks to continue that tradition and remains dedicated to helping our student-athletes towards success.

On behalf of the CCIW and its member schools, we would like to thank you for your support of our athletic teams and hope you enjoy your experience at all CCIW events.

Enjoy the championships.

Sincerely,

Chris Martin Mike KrizmanCommissioner Assistant Commissioner/ Sports Information Director

CCIW Sportsmanship StatementThe Colleges and Universities of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin believe that good sportsmanship is an integral component of intercollegiate competition. The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin wholeheartedly embraces the NCAA position that in order for good sportsmanship to prevail, coaches, student-athletes and fans must display respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility before, during and after all athletic contests. The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin encourages fans to enthusiastically support their team, recognize the outstanding performance of opponents and always exhibit good sportsmanship in their words and actions.

Entering its 64th season in 2009-10, 24th for women’s sports, the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) enjoys a reputation as the “Best Small-College Conference in the Nation.” In NCAA Division III competition, CCIW schools have accounted for 35 national championships, including 12 in men’s cross country, six in men’s basketball, four each in football and men’s outdoor track and field, two apiece in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and volleyball, three in women’s soccer, one in women’s outdoor track & field, one in men’s indoor track and field and one in women’s indoor track and field. Elmhurst College won a pair of NCAA Division III Volleyball Championships (1983 and 1985), and North Central College won a women’s basketball title (1983) before the conference began sponsorship of women’s athletics in 1986-87. During the 2004-05 academic year, the Wheaton women’s soccer team and the Millikin women’s basketball team added two more titles as both won their respective national championship. Wheaton women’s soccer won two more national titles in the 2006 and 2007 seasons while Illinois Wesleyan picked up the title in both women’s indoor track and field and women’s outdoor track and field in the spring of 2008. The conference was formed with nine charter members (Augustana, Carthage, Elmhurst, Illinois College, Illinois Wesleyan, Lake Forest, Millikin, North Central and Wheaton) on April 26, 1946, in Jacksonville, Ill., and opened competition in the 1946-47 academic year as the College Conference of Illinois. In 1967, the name was changed to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, to

recognize Carthage, which moved to Kenosha, Wis., in 1962 and Carroll, which entered the conference in 1955. Carthage left the conference in 1952, but returned in 1961. The CCIW sponsors 21 sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, volleyball and wrestling. As is often the case with athletic conferences, CCIW membership has experienced several changes since its inception. After Carthage left in 1952, Illinois College withdrew the following year. Elmhurst and Wheaton withdrew following the 1959-60 academic year. Wheaton rejoined for all sports but football in 1967 and for football in 1970. Elmhurst rejoined in the fall of 1967 for all sports but football and for football in the 1968 season. Carroll joined officially with the 1955 spring sports seasons. Carthage returned in the fall of 1961, and North Park entered the following fall. Lake Forest dropped out at the end of the 1962-63 season. The last member to leave the CCIW was Carroll following the 1991-92 season. In 2007, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, located in Terre Haute, Ind., joined the CCIW as an associate member for men’s and women’s swimming. Now eight members and one associate member strong, the CCIW continues its tradition of athletic and academic excellence.

The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin exists to serve a select group of private colleges and universities of similar size and heritage, which share a deep commitment to superior undergraduate education and a common perspective on the role of intercollegiate athletics in that education. The conference supports the following principles that distinguish the CCIW and its approach to intercollegiate athletics:

* Student-focused approach - CCIW schools place the highest priority on the overall educational experience of the individual student. Athletics are viewed as an important element of a well-rounded education. Student-athletes are integrated into the mainstream of the entire student body, receive no special privileges and are encouraged to participate in other campus groups and activities. The conference supports the active recruitment of student-athletes as a means of achieving the educational aims of each member institution.

* Broad based athletics programs - The CCIW program is wide-ranging in scope, with meaningful competition and championships offered in numerous sports. Each member institution offers a broad based program of intercollegiate sports and seeks widespread student participation in that program.

* Fairness and equity - CCIW schools are sensitive and responsive to the needs and interests of both male and female athletes, and are governed by principles of fairness and equity in its approach to funding, staffing and overall support for all sports. Each member institution is expected to fully comply with all NCAA, CCIW and institutional rules and regulations in the operation of its athletics program.

* Overall excellence and national stature of the conference - The CCIW seeks to continually develop and strengthen itself with the goal of recognition of the premier NCAA Division III athletic conference. The CCIW seeks to promote keen competition, the highest level of sportsmanship and the strongest performance possible in each sport. Regular participation by member institutions in NCAA regional and national competition is an ongoing conference goal.
