During his inaugural year as head coach, Brown posted a very successful 18-11 overall record and a 13-9 mark in the Sooner Athletic Conference. He led the Rangers to a tie for fifth place in the SAC during that season, coached an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American, an NAIA Academic All-American and five SAC All-Confer-ence selections. Brown was a full-time assistant for three seasons, helping Northwestern to a 57-39 record and making it to the NAIA National Championship “Elite Eight” during the 2006-07 season, a feat no other Ranger team has met.

Brown was an assistant coach for two years at conference foe University of Science and Arts. At USAO, he was in charge of recruiting and helped with numerous other aspects of the Drover program.

Prior to USAO, Brown served as the assistant coach of the men’s and women’s program at Otero (Colo.) Junior College. Both teams won the conference championship with the women going 27-5 and the men ending with a 21-9 record.

Brown resides in Alva with his wife Cathy and daughters Melody (10), Sarah (3) and Meghan (1).

BOB BATTISTI - DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

A T H L E T I C D I R E C T O R

Dear Ranger Alumni and Fans,

In September 2007, President Janet Cunningham announced the school’s intentions to improve the football and baseball venues to meet the needs of a modern-day collegiate athletic program. Northwestern has termed this athletic renaissance the Vision for Victory Campaign. Projects included as part of this campaign include a new football locker room, which will include space for athletic training and strength training facilities, a new press box and public use facility, permanent seating and new dugouts at the baseball field, and a new indoor practice facility for our baseball and softball teams.

To complete all these projects, Northwestern must raise approximately $4.5 million. The challenge lies in the fact we must rely on private donations to fund this project.

We would ask that you consider a commitment to the Vision for Victory Fund. We are counting on your gift to continue to provide our current and future student-athletes with the very best Northwestern has to offer.

Sincerely,

Bob Battisti, Director of Athletics

Battisti currently is working with his coaches to ensure that athletic facilities remain a high priority for improvement. Under his leadership, the softball field has added a new seven-inning scoreboard, rebuilt the dugouts and added a new press box. The men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms have been totally renovated with new custom lockers, new carpet, computers and signage. The soccer field underwent changes as well with a new scoreboard, new press box and improved player benches. The school is nearing completion for a “Vision for Victory” campaign that results in an upgrade of the football and baseball venues. This $4.5 million project includes construction of a new football locker room, construction of a new football press box and public use facility, construction of permanent seating and new dugouts at the baseball field and construction of a new baseball locker room and baseball/softball indoor practice facility. These facility upgrades will directly impact at least 220 student-athletes.

Battisti brings a wealth of intercollegiate athletics experience and a history of pride in being a Ranger. A veteran of 28 years in collegiate coaching, he was the Men’s Basketball Coach at Northwestern from 1986-2007. During that time Northwestern won six conference titles and finished in the NAIA’s top 25 seven times. Battisti finished with a 409-295 overall collegiate record including a 374-265

Bob Battisti is in his 24th year with the Northwestern Oklahoma State University athletic program. For 21 years he served as the men’s basketball coach and is beginning his third season as the Director of Athletics.

Named as Athletic Director on May 3, 2007, Battisti has devoted many hours to move the athletic program forward. In conjunction with the faculty senate, Battisti has implemented a mandatory course performance check for all sports and mandatory study hall sessions. In addition, he has developed the Student-Athlete Handbook that places an emphasis on student-athlete conduct, eligibility and academic responsibilities.

mark at Northwestern. He led the Rangers to the NAIA national tournament five times including an “elite eight” finish in 2007. Battisti’s finest season was that of 1993-94 when the Rangers posted a 29-2 overall record and finished ranked #2 in the final national poll after advancing to the “sweet sixteen” of the NAIA national tournament. While at Northwestern he was named conference coach of the year five times and was selected as the NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1994 by Basketball Times. During his tenure, Battisti has coached three All-Americans and five Academic All-Americans.

Before coming to Northwestern, Battisti served as an assistant coach at Bethany (Minn.) Lutheran College for three seasons before earning his first head coaching position at Lakewood (Minn.) Community College. After three seasons there, he joined the staff at the University of Minnesota for two years.

Battisti, born in Warren, Mich., received his bachelor’s degree in health and sports science in 1981 from Minnesota State University-Mankato. He furthered his education with a master’s degree in education in 1985 from the University of Minnesota. He and his wife Shelly, have one son, Cooper, age 13.

Dear Ranger Fans:

Thank you for your support of our basketball programs at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. I offer me best wishes to our coaches and players in their quest for a Sooner Athletic Conference championship.

Percefull Fieldhouse continues to provide our teams with one of the best home court advantages in the NAIA. In the past few years, we have completed major renovations of our locker room facilities for both the men’s and women’s teams, providing our student-athletes with very comfortable spaces to call home. I offer my thanks to the many donors who have invested in our basketball programs.

I hope you will join me in supporting the young men and women who represent Northwestern on the court this year. I am confident you will be proud to call them Rangers.

Cunningham becomes just the second alumni and first woman to become president of the institution.

In appointing Cunningham to the University’s top post, the Board of Regents cited her leadership abilities, experience and vision for Northwestern, qualities that inspired confidence among the University’s many stakeholders.

Cunningham was named executive vice president in 2002 after serving 12 years as vice president for fiscal affairs. As executive vice president, Cunningham served as the second highest ranking officer at Northwestern, developing and administering the university’s fiscal operations, with additional direct control over student services, intercollegiate athletics, auxiliary services, physical plant, financial aid, information technology and economic development.

She joined the faculty at Northwestern in 1979 and continued teaching until 1985, when she became an instructor at the University of Oklahoma while her husband attended law school there. She returned to teaching at Northwestern in 1988.

Cunningham earned a doctorate in education from Oklahoma State University and has both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northwestern. She also has completed professional education at the Institute of Educational Management at Harvard University and through the College Business Management Institute at the University of Kentucky. In 2001, she became a graduate of Leadership Oklahoma.

A leader in civic affairs, Cunningham serves on the executive committee of the Alva Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Woods County Economic Development Association. She also has served in numerous volunteer capacities with organizations connected to the Alva Public Schools.

Cunningham and her husband, Rick, a local attorney, have four children: sons Brett, Tanner and Drew, and a daughter Allison.

What began as a basketball con-ference has become a dominant grouping of some of the best athletic programs in the NAIA.

The Sooner Athletic Conference began in 1977-78 with Bethany Nazarene College (now South-

ern Nazarene University), Oklahoma Baptist University, Oklahoma Christian University, Phillips University and the University of Science & Arts of Okla-homa. Only one of those charter members is no longer with the conference, which has since added to its strength.

John Brown University has twice been an expansion team in the confer-ence, joining the league in 1980 and then re-joining the SAC in 1995 after a 12-year absence.

Oklahoma City University dropped out of the ranks of NCAA Division I in 1985 and took up residence in the SAC, beginning in the 1985-86 season.

Lubbock Christian University and Wayland Baptist University left their inde-pendent status behind and were admitted as the first Texas members of the SAC in 1994, replacing USAO, which opted to leave the league that year.

St. Gregory’s University, applied for membership and was granted associate member status and competed for the conference crown for the first time in 1998-99.

Charter member Phillips University was closed in the summer of 1998 due to financial instability.

USAO, which had dropped out and joined the Red River Athletic Conference, applied for and was granted membership in the SAC during the 1999-2000 school year.

Northwestern Oklahoma State University was added to the conference as a full member in the 2001-02 academic year.

Mid-America Christian University and Rogers State joined the league and became full members in 2007-08.

The Sooner Athletic Conference has had a proud heritage in the NAIA. In men’s basketball, a SAC team has played for the national championship 13 times and has been in the finals in 13 of the last 17 seasons. USAO won the national crown in 2002, beating Oklahoma Baptist in an all-SAC title tilt, John Brown won the 2005 crown and Oklahoma City won it all in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008.

In women’s basketball, SAC member Southern Nazarene won four NAIA titles from 1994-97, with OCU going on a four-year run of its own, winning championships from 1999-2002. SNU then upset OCU in the 2003 and 2004 title games. Lubbock Christian was the talk of the 2006 tournament, advanc-

ing to the championship game. In 2009, both Oklahoma Baptist and Oklahoma City reached the national semifinals. OBU has been to the tournament for each of the last 13 years, which is the longest active stretch.

Additionally, Oklahoma Christian has been a long-time regular at the NAIA Tournament and seven SAC schools were in the 32-team tournament in 2004. The SAC has had at least four entrants in each national tournament since 1997 and has had five or more entrants in each of the last five seasons.

But basketball is just the tip of the iceberg of success in the SAC.

In track, Oklahoma Baptist won the 2005 and 2007 women’s indoor national title and both OBU and Lubbock Christian have won national men’s track champion-ships in the 1990s, with the Bison adding another outdoor men’s title in 2007. Wayland Baptist captured both the women’s indoor and outdoor national titles in 2008 and 2009.

Lubbock Christian won every men’s cross country national title from 1990-97.

In baseball, Lubbock Christian won the national title in 1983 2009 and Okla-homa City has reached the finals in every season from 2002 until winning the title in 2005, among their league-best nine appearances. OBU also has appeared twice. Oklahoma Christian, Wayland Baptist, Southern Nazarene and John Brown also have made appearances in the national tournament.

In men’s golf, Oklahoma City won the national championship in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007 and was the runner-up in 1991. Oklahoma Christian was runner-up in 2001 and won it all in 2009, when four SAC teams were in the final top 12. Wayland Baptist was runner-up in 2007.

Southern Nazarene won the women’s golf titles in 1999 and 2002, with OCU finishing as runner-up in 2001, 2003 and 2004 before claiming the 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 national crowns.

Over a span from 1993-2002, Oklahoma City was in the national softball cham-pionship game 10 times, winning it all in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002 and again in 2007. They also were runner-up in 1986. OCU has reached the national tournament a national-record 19 times. Lubbock Christian threw its hat in the ring in 2008 and came away with a national title. St. Gregory’s was the national runner-up in 2009. Oklahoma Baptist has made it to three tournaments, while Oklahoma Christian has made it twice. The SAC carries an impressive 129-52 record at the national tournament.

Oklahoma Christian won the men’s tennis national title in 2003 and Oklahoma City claimed the national championship in a four-year run from 1998-2001. The OCU men were also runners up in 1994 and 1995.

In women’s tennis, Oklahoma City was a national runner-up in 1999.

Each year the national championships bear out what the member institutions believe: the Sooner Athletic Conference is simply the best small college confer-ence in America.
