In just four seasons, Head Coach Maura Crowell is already the winningest coach in UMass Boston Women’s Ice Hockey history and has the second-highest win total of any current coach in ECAC East since the 2005-06 season. She enters her fifth season with UMass Boston after leading the Beacons to their highest point total in ECAC East Conference play a year ago.

In just her fi rst year with the Beacons, Crowell led them to school records in both regular-season and ECAC East victories with a 15-9-1 mark, including a 12-7-0 showing in league play. Under her guidance, UMass Boston advanced to the ECAC East semifi nals for the second time in three years, following a fi rst-ever home playoff game at the Clark Athletic Center and three of her players earned All-Conference honors.

Crowell followed her fi rst year with three more trips to the ECAC East playoffs, including a pair of semifi nals appearances. Under her direction, the Beacons have hosted a playoff game in each of the last four seasons and earned the second seed in the ECAC East tournament in 2007-08. She’s seen nine of her players earn All-Conference accolades and one named as the league’s Rookie of the Year. Crowell is already the winningest women’s ice hockey coach in school history and is the only coach in school annals to guide her team to three playoff victories during her tenure.

Prior to her arrival, she spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach with Connecticut College of the New England Small College Athletic Conference. She helped guide the Camels to their fi rst-ever playoff appearance and also served as an instructor at the Connecticut College Development Hockey Camp. Prior to her time at Conn. College, Crowell served as an assistant coach for the Saint Mark’s School girl’s ice hockey program in Southborough, MA and gained head coaching experience as the Lions’ junior varsity lacrosse mentor. The Massachusetts native remains active within the ice hockey instruction arena, having served as an talent evaluator at the Texas Affi liate Camp, which is hosted by the Texas Amateur Hockey Association and a coach and

evaluator for USA Hockey’s Rocky Mountain District Camp in Salt Lake City, Utah. She also coached at various camps throughout the summer months, including the Massachusetts Satellite Program, 14 and Under USA National Development Camp, Boston University Hockey Camp, the Hamilton College Hockey School, the Dynamic Skating program at Merrimack College and Hub City Hockey.

Crowell enjoyed an outstanding collegiate playing career at Division I Colgate University, before moving onto the coaching ranks. The left wing helped the Raiders to three straight ECAC playoff appearances, including a date in the ECAC Championship as a sophomore, and a 63-37-7 record for an impressive .621 winning percentage in her four seasons in Hamilton, NY. The four-year starter was named an Assistant Captain for her senior year and was also selected to the ECAC All-Academic team for her fi nal season. Since her graduation in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in German, she is still prominent in Colgate’s record book, ranking 13th in career points (61), 10th in career goals (29) and 19th in all-time assists (32).

The Mansfi eld, MA native starred at Saint Mark’s School on the prep level, twice leading the Lions ice hockey team in points, while earning captain status for her junior and senior campaigns. She also excelled for the Saint Mark’s fi eld hockey program and led the fi eld hockey and ice hockey teams to the New England Prep School Athletic Conference title during her career.

Crowell received the Valentine Piotrow German Prize, awarded for academic excellence in German Studies at Colgate and added a Master of Arts in Teaching degree in German to her mantle in 2004, while at Connecticut College. She has been extremely active in community service, helping to organize a “Big Sister” mentor program for Hamilton, NY girls playing youth hockey in addition to serving as a counselor at Brantwood Camp in Peterborough, NH, working with underprivileged adolescent girls in a residential setting and volunteering in the Special Olympics as a speed skating instructor in Connecticut.

Ben Conway returns the UMass Boston Women’s Hockey staff after serving in a volunteer capacity a year ago. He will take on an increased role as the Beacons’ top assistant for 2009-10 after mentoring the goaltenders for both the men’s and women’s programs last season.

His wealth of knowledge and experience was an invaluable commodity last year with a pair of fi rst-year goalies in the UMass Boston women’s hockey stable. He was also an integral cog in the men’s team’s quest for an NCAA Tournament berth, keeping the squad’s goalies sharp as they competed in the ECAC East Championship game for the fi rst time in school history.

The Western Massachusetts native was part of a senior group at the College of the Holy Cross that enjoyed the most success in the school’s history. The Crusaders posted an 82-52-13 mark during Conway’s four seasons, while making two NCAA tournament appearances and winning the Atlantic Hockey League regular season and tournament titles twice. Holy Cross also won their fi rst-ever NCAA tournament contest with an upset over Minnesota. Conway certainly did his part, owning a career goals against average of 2.56 and posted a sub-3.00 GAA all four seasons, while receiving the AHL’s Goalie of the Year Award as a junior. Conway was also named Goalie of the Week a number of times and was also named to the league’s All-Academic squad.

Conway graduated from Holy Cross with a degree in psychology in 2006 and has since played professionally for the Memphis Riverkings and the Austin Ice Bats of the Central Hockey League. He has also served as a goaltender instructor at the Gary Dineen Hockey School and the Joe Bertagna Goalie School.

Hayley Moore joins the Beacons’ staff following a tremendous collegiate career at Brown University from 2004-08.

A two-year Captain for Brown, Moore fi nished her career as one of the greatest players in school history.

The forward was a four-time All-Ivy League selection, including twice being selected to the First Team. Moore was also named to the All-ECAC squad as well as the ECAC All-Academic team and fi nished her time at Brown ranked eighth on the school’s career points (130) and goals (68) list, while playing in all 123 games in her four seasons.

Moore capped her collegiate career by being selected as just the second Brown skater to compete in the Frozen Four Skills Challenge in Denver, Colorado. Just six female position players in the nation were chosen to compete.

Her outstanding play transcended the college level with an invite to compete for a spot on the United States National Team at the squad’s training facility in Lake Placid, NY.

A native of Wakefi eld, MA, Moore graduated from Brown in 2008 with a degree in human biology.

UMass Boston hockey looks well-equipped in 2009-10 with the return of eight of its top nine point-scorers from a year ago, including its top six. The Beacons also have one of the most experienced groups of players they have ever had with six senior and a half dozen juniors lacing up the skates for them. UMass Boston lost just three letterwinners from last year’s squad and is primed to challenge for the ECAC East crown.

The Beacons top fi ve point-scoring forwards will don the Beacon blue once again this season, among them a two-time All-Conference player heading into her fi nal season of play.

Senior Maria Nasta (Andover, MA) continued her outstanding play for UMass Boston last year, earning Second Team All-ECAC honors, while ranking second in the nation with a school-record 27 assists in 26 contests. She will be counted on as one of the team’s top offensive threats once again this season and should become the third player in school annals to reach the 100-point plateau this year. The recipient of many of her helpers was junior Lauren Duran (Woburn, MA), who fl ourished in her fi rst full season as a forward. In 23 games, Duran tallied 20 goals as one of the top goal scorers in the country with 0.87 per game to rank third among the nation’s leaders. Named a Tri-captain this year, she was also an integral part of the Beacons’ potent power play unit last season, which ranked second among Division III schools with a 27.3% success rate. Duran was good for seven goals with the extra skater to rank among the nation’s best. Junior Rachel Sousa (Woburn, MA) will also be a key playmaker for UMass Boston again this season. She was the second-leading distributor for the Beacons with 16 assists, a total that was good for 12th most among ECAC East players. She will also be a key on the power play and penalty kill when not playing on one of the team’s top lines. Junior Kristen Smith (Beavercreek, OH) made a smooth

transition in her t ransfer f rom Division I Ohio State last year as one of the team’s top goal-scoring threats with 16 in 25 games to rank among the nation’s elite with 0.64 per game to stand 16th. Three of her tallies were game-winners, s h o w i n g h e r penchant to score when it counts

Junior forward Kristen Smith was one of the Beacons’ top goal scorers last year with 16 to rank second on the team

most. She has quickly established herself as a team leader and was named a Captain prior to the season.

Sophomore Kelly Gillis (Northford, CT) enjoyed a solid season in her fi rst year of collegiate hockey with 18 points, including 10 goals as UMass Boston’s top-scoring rookie. She will be looked upon to elevate her game this season and contribute to a formidable offense for the Beacons. Junior forward Katie Kirwan (Centerville, MA) worked hard in the

offseason to improve her skill and conditioning and will vie for increased time on the ice with an eye toward providing more offense as well. She should also be a solid contributor on the penalty kill.

Seniors Katelyn Lajoie (Marlboro, MA), Katelyn Pohlman (Newton, MA) and Katelyn Corsino (Belmont, MA) will all provide invaluable experience in their fourth years of hockey. Corsino was named a Captain for his season and should add to UMass Boston’s depth with her continued improvement in each of her years with the Beacons. Lajoie has been a steady player for UMass Boston and ranked fi fth on the team with six goals a year ago. She will be counted on to provide strength and offensive punch again this year, while Pohlman will give the Beacons a versatile four-year player, who can contribute either as a forward or in the defensive zone of the ice. She has

good speed and her experience will be an asset. Sophomore forward Whitney Fraleigh (Fresno, CA) also has the ability to play both ends of the ice and is a very good team player. She saw action in 25 games last year and is a coachable player, who is very dependable.

In add i t ion to an already deep offensive front for UMass Boston is sophomore transfer S a m P h i l l i p s (Scottsdale, AZ). She should make a n i m m e d i a t e impact on one of the team’s top lines after registering 14 points in 18 games, including eight goals for New England College last season. She’s a good playmaker, who also knows how to score. Freshman Alli Greenberg (Stoughton, MA) should also fi gure as one of the Beacons key offensive players in her fi rst year of collegiate hockey. She’s an aggressive, explosive skater and should see time on both the penalty kill and power play, while Allison Manzella (Framingham, MA) has good size at the power forward spot. She enjoyed an outstanding high school career and should add depth to the offense.

UMass Boston is both talented and experienced on the blue line with all of its top defensemen returning from last year’s squad.

Senior Amanda Cianciulli (Billerica, MA) returns for her fi nal season and should give the Beacons a physical presence on the ice. She’s a stay at home defenseman and excels on the penalty kill, while junior Hannah Davis (Oakdale, MN) is a reliable defender with gifted offensive skills. Davis earned ECAC East Honorable Mention honors last year and was among the top-scoring defensemen in the nation with 16 points in 24 games for a 0.67 clip to rank 14th in the country. She proved to be a key component on the power play with six goals to place 16th among the Division III leaders and is a smart, physical player with good vision. Senior Sandy Parlato (Needham, MA) will play the entire season from the blueline after making the switch last season. She’s an experienced player, who is strong on the puck and

good in the corners. She can also provide UMass Boston with some offense.

Junior Jazz Webber (Winslow, ME) made the move to the defensive side of the puck last year and made an immediate impact as a presence on the power play with fi ve of her six tallies coming with the advantage. She knows the game well and is a good skater with excellent vision and will also be a contributor on the penalty kill, while sophomore Brittany Usmail (New Hartford, NY) returns after a fi rst year that saw her play in all 26 games. She worked hard in the offseason to come into the season in top condition and has improved her overall hockey sense and skills. She possesses a good shot and will see time on both the power play and penalty kill.

Freshmen Julia Gould (Flemington, NJ) and Rebecca Murphy (Hingham, MA) enter the defensive fold for the Beacons and will add to their solid depth. Gould knows her position very well and should see quality ice time. She’s a tough, physical player with experience playing at a high level. Murphy will make the transition to the blueline in her fi rst year of collegiate hockey and is a great team player with an excellent attitude. She will vie for ice time throughout the season.

The Beacons enter the season with just two goalies, but both are back from last season and should be up to the task.

Sophomore Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, CT) was the primary goaltender last year with a school-record 1197:37 minutes and was tested against some of the best teams in the region. She responded by allowing two or fewer goals in 11 starts and posted a 3.06 goals against average for the fourth-lowest mark in school history. She also ranked eighth in ECAC East with a .905 save percentage and stopped 581 shots on the year for the second-most in school history. Freshman Jami Cudmore (Balgonie, SK) was granted a medical hardship following a torn anterior cruciate ligament that required surgery. Prior to the injury, Cudmore was very impressive with a .923 save percentage and a 3.02 goals against average against three very good opponents in Holy Cross, Saint Anselm and Norwich. She did not lose a game last year and will work hard to get back on the ice early this season.

Women’s hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has played the role of both a leader and a pioneer during the two decades that it has been involved with the game. Home to the premier Division I league in the nation, the ECAC boasts a history that gleams with accomplishments. From individual honors to contributions on the international stage, the ECAC and its players and coaches have set a high standard for excellence in the game. At the Division I level, ECAC players have 29 times achieved All-America honors, won 25 Olympic Gold Medals, and have won the Patty Kazmaier Award all fi ve years it has existed as a designation of the nation’s top player. Membership in the ECAC’s leagues has changed to meet the needs of the exploding collegiate sport as 22 teams have called the ECAC home since the fi rst championship was contested in 1984. The ECAC also sponsors hockey at the Division III level with some of the best programs in the nation residing in ECAC East and West. Members of Division III ECAC can be found in Pennsylvania, New York State and every corner of New England. Members of the East Division include Manhattanville College, The College of the Holy Cross, University of Southern Maine, New England College, Saint Michael’s College, Salve Regina University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Saint Anselm College, Castleton State College, Plymouth State University, Norwich University and University of Massachusetts Boston. The West includes Elmira College, SUNY-Plattsburgh, Neumann College, Utica College, SUNY-Cortland, Buffalo State College, SUNY-Oswego, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Chatham College. Elmira won the National Championship in 2002 and 2003, defeating Manhattanville for the title in 2003, but fell in the 2005 championship game. Plattsburgh lost in the 2006 title game, but took the trophy in 2007.

A Magical First YearWhen the puck dropped at 6:57 p.m. on November 7, 2003, it was the culmination of thousands of hours of hard work by so many people dedicated to the success of UMass Boston women’s ice hockey. Whether the Beacons won or lost that night, they represented the hopes of everything that’s good about UMass Boston. They would symbolize a concerted effort to build a program from the ground up, the right way.

Freshman forward Calli Beskosty netted the night’s fi rst goal at the 4:01 mark of the fi rst period to give UMB a 1-0 edge. Beskosty, would add another goal later in the evening and would combine with classmates, Andrea Ciarletta and Melissa Belmonte for 10 points on the night as the Beacons defeated the visiting State University of New York - Cortland Red Dragons, 5-3.

In a season where just being competitive would have been enough, UMass Boston’s women’s ice hockey team gave the campus a year to remember. The Beacons busted out of the gate, becoming the fi rst program in school history to win its fi rst fi ve games and went on to fi nish the campaign with a 13-12-1 mark. Along the way, a UMass Boston player was named ECAC East Rookie of the Week on fi ve occasions and twice had the top goaltender for the week and the week’s best player once.

The “new kid” didn’t look so wide-eyed as it consistently tested established programs throughout the season, including a 3-1 Valentine’s Day victory over the nation’s number seven-ranked team, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. It wouldn’t be the last time that the Beacons would surprise an opponent as they upended heavily favored Rochester Institute of Technology on the road, 6-4, on February 28 to advance to the semi-fi nals round of the ECAC East post-season tournament.

The magical run fi nally came to an end with a loss to the nation’s number one team, Manhattanville College, but considering UMass Boston didn’t even exist on the women’s ice hockey landscape just one year prior, it was a pretty lofty achievement and those in hockey circles took notice, selecting UMB Head Coach Laura Schuler as the ECAC East Coach of the Year. After leading the nation in scoring with 2.15 points per game, Ciarletta was named the conference Rookie of the Year and was tabbed to the league’s Second Team All-Star squad, along with freshman defenseman Kerri Zizzo. Belmonte fi nished as the Division III’s number three scorer, was named to the ECAC East Honorable mention team and was also a member of the conference All-Rookie unit with Ciarletta and Zizzo. Junior defenseman Jenn Murray was also an honorable mention selection for the Beacons.

BEACON TRADITIONBEACON TRADITION

Building a HistoryIn 2000, the University of Massachusetts Boston made a decision to add women’s ice hockey to its athletic program. It would be the fi rst new program added at UMass Boston since 1995 and it was imperative that everything would be done right to give the new program all the necessities to succeed from the beginning. Former Canadian Olympic Hockey star, Laura Schuler, was hired as the team’s fi rst ever Head Coach in the Fall of 2001. Soon, thereafter, former teammate, Linda Lundrigan, was brought on as her fi rst assistant coach. Schuler spent all of 2001-02 traveling across the region and watching prep hockey games, recruiting future Beacons to fi ll out the roster for the 2002-03 club campaign. In UMass Boston’s club season, a group of young women, who would get the puck moving for UMB, competed against primarily varsity teams and also a few club squads, while posting a very respectable 9-7-1 mark. The core of that team returned for UMB’s inaugural varsity season, along with some very good newcomers to form the foundation for UMass Boston Women’s Ice Hockey team. The Beacons entered the 2003-04 season as a member of the Eastern College Athletic Conference and compete in the East division.

Nickname and ColorsLooking to establish an identity for UMass Boston’s athletic program, the athletic department staff selected Beacons as the University nickname, and royal blue and white as the school colors in the mid-1970s.

The nickname was chosen because UMass Boston sits on Boston Harbor, where lighthouses dot the coastline. The most renowned lighthouse in Boston Harbor, or the rest of the country for that matter, is Boston Light. Located at the entrance to the harbor, the structure has guided ships to safe harbor since fi rst illuminating its beacon in 1716. The British destroyed Boston Light in 1776, but Governor John Hancock had the lighthouse rebuilt in 1781.

On September 23, 2002, UMass Boston introduced a “new” Beacon and changed its colors to Beacon Blue, Black and White.

History of the Beacon

Seeing the lightFor centuries, beacons have guided ships in the most perilous waters to safety. Quite often, a Beacon was the only light sailors could see in the black of night. The light was reassuring. Hopeful. Sustaining. It helped ships stay the course. A beacon of light has since become synonymous with any source of guidance and inspiration. The word “beacon” became part of the heritage of the City of Boston in the 1780’s, when a beacon stood on what is now called Beacon Hill. Today, Beacon Hill, the most historic and elegant neighborhood in the city, is recognized as the essence of Old Boston.

Lighting the WayPaul Finnegan, one of the fi rst administrators of athletics at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, recognized the symbolic importance of the beacon. In fact, he became a beacon in his own right. In the early 1970’s, Finnegan established intramural and recreational athletics for UMass Boston Students at the university’s fi rst campus in Park Square, with programs on the Boston Common and at the Greater Boston YMCA. Knowing that the campus would be built on Boston Harbor, where beacons guide ships from all over the world, Finnegan believed a beacon would be the ideal symbol to represent UMass Boston and its athletic teams.

Shine OnWith good reason. The beacon is a symbol of hope and guidance. As a light that is never extinguished, it represents a constant. A promise that, if you persevere, you will reach your destination. As the city’s only public university, UMass Boston guides students to a better future. It offers promise to those associated with the university that they can shine. Rise above. Realize their hopes and dreams. It refl ects UMass Boston Athletics. UMass Boston athletic teams have been known as the Beacons since 1974. In 1982, an offi cial logo was rendered. It remained for almost 20 years but this friendly cartoon character failed to capture the drive and determination of UMass Boston’s athletics. However, the new Beacon logo does exactly that. And more.

Our logo, like our program, conveys light, strength and endurance. We have an intensity of focus, a relentless pursuit to achieve. We endure in the darkest of outlooks. With a substantial international student-athlete population, we are a beacon for diversity. In fact, we are the only institution in the country with a Beacon as its mascot. Appropriately, this is UMass Boston, a university like no other.

The Universi ty of Massachuset ts Boston was established in 1964 to provide the opportunity for superior education at moderate cost to the people of greater Boston.

Starting out in a downtown Boston location, the university moved to its current 175-acre campus on the Columbia Point peninsula in 1974 and merged with Boston State College in 1982. A commuter school, UMass Boston is nationally recognized as a model of excellence for urban universities.

UMass Boston enrolled 14,117 students in the 2008-2009 academic year, with 10,478 undergraduate students and 3,639 graduate students comprising a multicultural and diverse student body. Students of all ages are enrolled at UMass Boston and students of color make up 36 percent of the university’s undergraduate enrollment. More than 90 languages are spoken in the homes of members of the 2005 graduating class.

UMass Boston’s graduate school and six colleges offer over 100 undergraduate majors, minors, and programs of study, and nearly 100 graduate programs, including 23 at the doctoral level., while the university’s 30 institutes and centers are actively involved in research and public service in the areas of public policy; gerontology; media; labor; women in politics; African-American, Latino, and Asian issues; and environmental concerns. More than 280 active research and training grants attracted a total $35.6 million in external funds—a new record of success—for the fi scal year 2004-05. Comparing fi ve-year averages shows the amount awarded UMass Boston increased a remarkable 70% between 2001 and 2005. The university employs 913 distinguished faculty members, including Lloyd Schwartz, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism.

Located in the Boston community of Dorchester, UMass Boston offers excellent views of downtown Boston, the Harbor Islands and Dorchester Bay. UMass Boston shares its campus with the John F. Kennedy Library, which offers its archival resources to UMass Boston students and instructors. The university’s own Healey Library is an information gateway to more than 600,000 books and journals on campus and to thousands of electronic information resources on the Internet.

Other academic facilities include the biology department’s three greenhouses, which host collections of plant species native to tropical, desert and temperate climates, and The Instructional Technology Center, a professional development and technology facility for faculty and staff, which opened in 1996.

Strength & Conditioning The University of Massachusetts Boston is one of the few NCAA III schools in the country to offer a year round strength and conditioning program. The varsity weight room is designed to improve all areas of athletic performance for all sports. The strength and conditioning coach is a certifi ed professional. UMass Boston’s academic advising center for student athletes is designed to help each Beacon athlete in every sport complete his or her undergraduate degree. We make sure that our students are not solely concerned with maintaining athletic eligibility. We work extensively with the faculty and professional staff on-campus, and we help our students with course selection, advising and counseling, and career and graduate school exploration. When you enroll at UMass Boston, you will get to know your advisor quite well. One of our primary focuses is freshman-year retention, so we are highly motivated in your fi rst year to work with you to develop a plan for academic success. Your advisor will meet with you on a one-to-one basis and introduce you to the Clark Athletic Center’s computer lab--a fully equipped facility open exclusively to UMB student-athletes.

Sports Medicine Quite simply, the sports medicine center at UMass Boston is one of the best in the area. It combines the best facility with the best people -- all with the goal of keeping Beacon student-athletes healthy. The sports medicine room falls under the direction of head athletic trainer Ed Perkins, a UMass Boston graduate and former athlete with the Beacons. Before taking over at UMB, Ed worked with the nationally ranked men’s basketball team at Temple University before returning to Division III athletics at MIT and at Bridgewater State College. Shannon Soares, a certified athletic trainer in her own right, is the university’s assistant athletic trainer. Shannon’s credentials include a stint with Dennis-Yarmouth High School as its head athletic trainer and two summers working with top major league baseball prospects in the prestigious Cape Cod League. What that means to you is that when you become a member of the Beacons, you are in the safest environment possible. Whether it be injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, or rehabilitation, the training staff at UMass Boston is looking out for you. Before you are eligible for competition, you will be required to undergo a thorough physical examination. You will be monitored throughout the training phase and competitive season. And the training staff works closely with your head coach to make your participation in Beacon athletics as safe as it can be. To ensure quality individual care, the training staff regularly acquires the latest and most effective modalities. The sports medicine center at UMass Boston is equipped with a four-channel electrical stimulation with combination ultrasound unit, a paraffi n bath, two hydrocollator units, a Jobst compression unit and a whirlpool bath.

The student athlete at UMass Boston has a wealth of athletic and recreational facilities available within the confi nes of the Clark Athletic Center.

The athletic center has served as the home of the Beacon basketball program since its completion in 1981.

Named for Catherine Forbes Clark, a former trustee of the University of Massachusetts system and prominent Dorchester civic leader, the Clark Athletic Center emulates its namesake by serving the University community as well as area residents throughout the year.

Considered one of the fi nest athletic and recreational facilities in Greater Boston, the complex accommodates the school’s 18 intercollegiate sports and extensive intramural program. The Center’s building houses

a main gymnasium, which includes a 3,500-seat basketball arena along with three auxiliary basketball courts and two volleyball courts, a 1,000-seat ice rink, and an Olympic-size swimming pool with a high-dive area, six 25-yard lanes and an observation deck. A weight room,

creative and combative rooms and a sports medicine area round out the interior of the structure.

Outside the building, UMass Boston boasts an eight-lane 400-meter track, eight tennis courts, a softball diamond and two multipurpose fi elds primarily used for soccer and lacrosse. The outdoor facilities also include a boathouse and dock for the sailing program as well as several recreational fi elds.

In addition to extensive use by the intercollegiate and intramural programs, the Clark Athletic Center serves as the site for numerous community activities. Included in the list of community activities are a variety of events for both youth and the physically challenged. UMass Boston hosts the National Youth Sports Program, an NCAA-sponsored summer camp for inner-city youth, as well as the Dana

Barros Basketball Camp, the All Dorchester Sports League, the Boston Youth Games, the Boston Housing Authority Jamboree, the Bay State Games and MIAA state tournament games in soccer, ice hockey and basketball.

The athletic center became the new home of the Boston Shootout, the premier high school basketball tournament in the nation, in 1997 and has served as a workout facility for the Boston Celtics and the 2000 McDonald’s All-American High School Basketball team, while also serving as the site of the Sprite Slam Jam. During the summer of 1999, the center began hosting the Shaw’s Summer Pro League, featuring current and future stars of the NBA. The center also hosts the Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs during the NBA season, serving as a practice site for both of those teams on their visits to Boston.

The Clark Athletic Center saw its most excitement for 2000 in just one night when on October 3rd, the University hosted the fi rst United States Presidential Debate of 2000. When the parties fi nally agreed to the Boston debate, the event was suddenly only two weeks away. In that time frame the Clark Athletic Center had to be converted into a debate hall and the adjacent hockey rink into a media center, replete with red carpet, approximately 700 phones, more than 70 televisions, and accommodations for almost 1,600 media representatives from around the world. The complex has also doubled as a concert venue, hosting multiple-Grammy winning artist Kanye West in 2006 as well as the O’Jays and Common in 2007.

UMass Boston also boasts one of the fi nest personal fi tness facilities in the area in the Beacon Fitness Center. The state-of-the-art recreational area provides students, faculty and staff with modern equipment in a clean environment.

Intercollegiate athletics, intramurals and recreation for students, staff and faculty are the primary programs of the UMass Boston Department of Athletics. The department offers 18 varsity sports and is a member of the NCAA’s Division III. UMass Boston has teams competing in the ECAC, the Little East Conference and ECAC East Ice Hockey. Ninety-three Beacons in seven sports have been named All-Americans. The women’s indoor and outdoor track and fi eld teams had an outstanding record of achievement, including four NCAA Team Championships and 37 individual NCAA Championships.

But the Department of Athletics has another important concern as well--service to the community. Whether it’s complimentary use of the University’s athletic facilities, coaches’ and student athletes’ sports clinics for youth groups, or holiday visits to area hospitals, UMass Boston Athletics is in the forefront of serving area neighborhoods and communities throughout the state.

UMass Boston is in a unique position as the only public university in the City of Boston. For that reason, the University has a responsibility above and beyond its mission to provide a superior higher education at moderate cost to the people of the metropolitan area. Because of its urban environment and its spacious, coastline location, the University can reach out to its neighbors and provide fi rst rate facilities for healthy, stimulating sports and recreational activities.

National Consortium for Academics and Sports member institutions develop Outreach and Community Service programs with current student-athletes and former student-athletes from the Degree Completion Program. Over the last 23 years, NCAS member institutions, through their outreach and community service programs, have reached more than 17.6 million youth nationwide with messages about violence prevention, gender sensitivity, confl ict resolution, the importance of academics and athletics, staying in school, the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and much more. Since 1985, NCAS student-athletes have given over 19 million hours of community service.

There is no one way to conduct school outreach programs. It is clear from the great work done by NCAS members that there are many ways to provide quality programs. Their diversity and contributions to our nation is extraordinary.

Community Servings – Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey teamed up to sell pies to benefi t Boston’s only free, home-delivered meals program for individuals and families with life-threatening diseases

Franklin Park Cleanup – Baseball team members spent the day ensuring that Franklin Park was a clean and safe enviroment for the community

Valentine’s Day Tea – Members of the softball team spent time with senior citizens at Harbor Point

Pink in the Rink/Pink Zone – Men’s & Women’s Ice Hockey and Men’s & Women’s Basketball all raised money for cancer research, while promoting education for cancer awareness.

Beacon Dash – Cross Country teams sponsor and run the event with proceeds going to the Early Learning Center

Bring Your Child to Work Day – Womens’ basketball ran a clinic for 30 kids along with arts and crafts

More than 150 school, charitable, government and private organizations use UMass Boston athletic facilities each year at little or no cost.

Over 2,500 people visit our athletic facilities each year, as participants or spectators.

UMass Boston’s indoor and outdoor athletic facilities are in use by visitors for over 2100 hours each year.

In 2007 the National Consortium for Academics and Sports named the Department of Athletics at UMass Boston as # 1 in the country among Division III institutions and seventh overall for Community Service.

STUDENT ATHLETE ADVISORY COUNCIL

The Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) is comprised of student athlete representatives from each of UMass Boston’s teams. The purpose of the organization is to promote all UMB sports and provide student athletes an opportunity to impact those issues that affect their daily lives.

SAAC is the student athlete’s voice and their vehicle to implement new ideas and infl uence positive change to enhance the student-athlete experience at UMass Boston.

Members of each team will nominate and select an eligible student athlete to represent their sport on the SAAC. An alternate will also be selected, in the event that the designated representative cannot attend a meeting. It is expected that each team will be represented at every scheduled meeting/event.

Throughout the year, student athletes are encouraged to communicate ideas and concerns to the respective representative of their sport.

As a student athlete at UMass Boston you will have unique opportunities to represent the University on a national level and in national programs.

NCAA CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS

The 2000-01 school year marked the department’s fi rst year as a member of the NCAA’s CHAMPS/Life Skills program. Presently, 323 institutions and six conference offi ces now participate in this NCAA supported life skills program. The NCAA mission of CHAMPS/Life Skills is “committed to a comprehensive program that provides educational experience and services in order to develop well balanced lifestyles for student-athletes; to encourage growth in decision making, planning and fulfi llment of career and life goals.”

The CHAMPS/Life Skills program will be presented this year at UMB through the development of workshops/guest speakers that address identifi ed life skill needs in the fi ve commitment areas of this program.

As part of our membership in CHAMPS/Life Skills, each year one of four student athlete nominees will attend the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference.

Five Colleges to Choose FromWhen you apply, you’ll be seeking admission to one of fi ve UMass Boston college that conduct degree programs for undergraduates. The colleges are briefl y described here. Your choice of a college means that you’ll be expected to complete a major offered by your college, but it doesn’t limit you to courses within your college. SPORTS MEDIA RELATIONS OFFICE The UMass Boston Sports Media Relations offi ce is located on the lower level of the Clark Athletic Center. PRESS ROW FACILITIES Space in the UMass Boston ice hockey press box is extremely limited, with priority given to game personnel. Media members requesting space in the press box are advised to make arrangements with UMass Boston Sports Media Relations Director, Alan Wickstrom, as early as possible.

CREDENTIALS Media members wishing to obtain credentials to UMass Boston ice hockey games must notify the Sports Media Relations offi ce at least one day in advance of the requested game. Photographers who wish to shoot from the penalty box must make prior arrangements with the Sports Media Relations Director. Media members working in the penalty box assume the responsibility for all risks.

RADIO Radio stations wishing to broadcast UMass Boston ice hockey games must make arrangements with the Sports Media Relations offi ce at least two weeks prior to the requested game. Telephone lines will be supplied by the University, provided the requested notice is given. All calls will be made on a collect or calling card basis.

MEDIA PARKING Media members should park in the upper level of the University’s parking garage. Parking passes will be made available to media members who request them in advance.

PRESS ROW SERVICES The UMass Boston Sports Media Relations offi ce will provide team rosters, pregame statistics and the ECAC East weekly report prior to the game. Shot totals will be distributed after each period and a complete box score will be available after the game.

POSTGAME INTERVIEWS A 10-minute cooling off period, recommended by the NCAA, will be strictly enforced, after which UMass Boston Head Coach Maura Crowell and selected players will be made available to media members. Postgame interviews will be conducted in the rink area near the locker room door.

PLAYER INTERVIEWS Interviews other than those immediately following a game must be arranged through the UMass Boston Sports Media Relations offi ce. The Sports Media Relations Director will see that all reasonable requests are met, and a time will be arranged so as not to interfere with the student’s academic schedule.

MEDIA WORK ROOM The Clark Athletic Center offi ce will be open following games for media wishing to fi le postgame reports. There is ample work space with power outlets and telephones.

POSTGAME FAXES The Sports Media Relations offi ce will fax a complete box score and game story to media outlets upon request. Requests should be made prior to the game.
