SEASONINFORMATION

SPRING OUTLOOKANDREW PUTNAM — TWO-TIME ALL-AMERICAN

Following a solid fall season where nearly all of the Pepperdine men’s golf team saw action, the Waves head into the spring 2010 season with a few clear goals in mind. “We’d like to recapture the WCC title,” said Pepperdine Coach John Geiberger, who is in his 14th season. “We’d like to win a couple of other tournaments, because I feel we’re good enough to do that. It’s been a fine line between first and fifth so far, and I didn’t feel like we were that far off this fall. We want to have a solid showing at regionals, get through that, and once you get to nationals, anything can happen.” Pepperdine is coming off a 2008-09 campaign that included a victory at the Arizona Intercollegiate, a tie for third place at the West Coast Conference Championships and a spot in the NCAA South Central Regional. During fall 2009’s four tournaments, the Waves had finishes of fourth, fifth and seventh (twice). “This fall, as a team, we did fairly well,” Geiberger said. “But we were just sort of missing out on having someone contend at each tournament, and you need that. And we didn’t necessarily have a fifth player contributing as much as a successful team needs. But overall, our guys improved and got better. I’m happy we played multiple guys in the five spot. They got their opportunities and it will help them in the spring.” It’s pretty much the same roster as 2008-09. There were no seniors last season, only one athlete departed and no new players were brought aboard. Of the nine on the fall roster, eight saw action in at least one tournament. Four of the Waves may have established themselves as mainstays in the lineup — seniors Shane Mason and Carl Smith, junior Andrew Putnam and sophomore Josh Anderson — as each of them competed at all four fall events. “Those four guys are sort of the baseline of the team,” said Geiberger, who is again assisted by Brendan von Doehren. “Things can always change, someone might not play well at times, but generally, those four have established themselves.” Putnam (University Place, Wash./Life Christian Academy) is already a two-time All-American and was the 2009 WCC Player of the Year. He ranks third all-time at Pepperdine with a career scoring average of 72.85 and has finished in the top 20 at 23 of his 27 tournaments thus far, including three of four in the fall. He had a 72.75 stroke average in the four events, with a best finish of sixth place at The Prestige at PGA West. “Andrew is trending in the right direction since he hit a little slump last spring,” Geiberger said. “He’s feeling much better about his game. Fundamentally, he’s on track. I’m excited about the fact that he can have a really good spring. He’s kind of the guy, the two-time All-American, that we expect will lead us.” After redshirting his first season, Anderson (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS)

was the team’s second-best player last year with a 73.36 stroke average, and he earned All-WCC first team honors. He began the fall with a tie for ninth place at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, but had a bumpy showing the next three times out. He averaged 74.08 strokes for the fall. “Josh was frustrated with his performances this fall and he’s looking forward to rebounding,” Geiberger said. “But if you have to choose a side of the calendar not to play well, it’s the fall. He’s

SPRING OUTLOOKCONTINUEDgot a lot of talent and upside, and once he gets back into the right direction it will really help us.” Mason (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine HS) has continued his strong play since solidifying a spot in the lineup last spring. He averaged 74.52 strokes last season, earning All-WCC honorable mention, and was down to 73.08 strokes this fall. Also a standout in the classroom, he was Pepperdine’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2008-09. “Shane is our most improved player by far,” Geiberger said. “He’s always been a hard worker but he’s even taken it to the next level because he wants to move on and play professionally. He doesn’t let a moment go by when he’s not working on something.” An All-WCC honorable mention selection as a freshman and sophomore, Smith (Laguna Beach, Calif./Santa Margarita HS) has made an excellent return from a trying junior season. He had three top 25 finishes in the fall and averaged 74.17 strokes. “Carl is a senior and still wants to improve every aspect of his game,” Geiberger said. “Mentally, he understands how to play golf better than when he was younger. It wouldn’t surprise me if he won a tournament this spring.” If those four are able to remain in the lineup, that leaves five others to battle it out for one spot: seniors Olin Browne and Jorge Mazario, juniors Austyn Karle and Andrew Widmar and redshirt freshman Johnny Mac Arthur. Browne (Tequesta, Fla./Benjamin School) played as an individual at The Prestige at PGA West and has four career tournaments under his belt. “Olin has improved a lot,” Geiberger said. “It would be great if he can get in there this spring, because he doesn’t have a lot of time left. He understands what he needs to do to get better. He’s got talent and could help us in the spring.” Mazario (Madrid, Spain/Veritas HS) was the only one of the nine not to see action in the fall, but he has competed in five events in his career. “Jorge has been around a couple of years and just needs to work on his consistency,” Geiberger said. “He’s gotten into the lineup, but he hasn’t stayed in the lineup.” The most experienced member of the five is Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep), who has played 44 rounds at 15 tournaments heading into the spring. He was in the lineup for the season-opening William H. Tucker Intercollegiate. “Austyn has played in and out of the lineup the past two years and has some good experience,” Geiberger said. “He didn’t have the best fall but he’s got a good attitude. He’s a scrappy player that never gives up on you, so he’ll be in the competition to travel to every tournament.” After redshirting last season due to a back injury, Widmar (El Paso, Texas/Cathedral HS) is starting to round back into form. He made his return to collegiate golf for the first time in a year and a half in the final tournament of the fall, the David Toms Intercollegiate. “It was great to see Andrew come back and have a solid tournament,” Geiberger said. “When he got hurt, he was just starting to carve out a really good spot on the team. He fights and grinds and works hard, and does it all in a quiet manner.” Mac Arthur (Newhall, Calif./Hart HS) also redshirted last season, his first at Pepperdine. But he made it into the lineup for two fall tournaments and got his first taste of college golf. “Johnny is learning a lot and is very coachable,” Geiberger said. “He’s got a lot of talent and is working on things that will make him better.”

COACHBIOGRAPHIES

John Geiberger has made a name for himself in collegiate golf circles. Now in his 14th season as the Pepperdine men’s golf head coach in 2009-10, Geiberger has led Pepperdine to the 1997 NCAA title and nine West Coast Conference championships. In addition to the 1997 national championship, Geiberger’s teams have appeared in the NCAA Regionals 12 times and the NCAA Championships five times. They had a streak of seven WCC titles in a row from 1999-2005 and last won in 2007. Geiberger was tabbed the winner of the 1996-97 Dave Williams Award, given annually to the National Coach of the Year by the GCAA. He has earned NCAA District 8 Coach of the Year honors twice (1997 and 2002) and is a five-time WCC Coach of the Year (1997, 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2005). During Geiberger’s time as the Waves’ head coach, he has had two Byron Nelson Award winners in Michael Putnam (2005) and Jason Allred (2002). The award is presented annually to a graduating senior and is based on golf performance, academic success and sportsmanship. Pepperdine has also captured 19 tournament titles, produced 12 All-American selections and had four national academic honorees under Geiberger’s watch. Geiberger also has coached two members of the prestigious USGA Walker Cup (Putnam and Jason Gore), three members of the collegiate USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championships (Michael Putnam, Andrew Putnam and Alex Coe) and one member of the Palmer Cup (Michael Putnam). With this blend of athletic and academic success, Golf Digest ranked Pepperdine the fifth-best program in the country in 2007, combining the strength of the program and its academic reputation. Geiberger is an active member of the Golf Coaches Association of America and recently served as chairman of the All-American Committee. A three-year letterwinner at Pepperdine from 1989-91, Geiberger’s rookie season as head coach ended in impressive fashion in May 1997 when the Waves outplayed the nation’s best teams to claim the NCAA title at the Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill., located near Chicago. Geiberger succeeded former Pepperdine teammate Todd Andrews, who resigned as the Waves’ head coach in July 1996. Inheriting a talent-laden roster and a veteran team that had finished 24th at the 1996 NCAA Championships, Geiberger masterfully prepared his squad for a dramatic late-season push that culminated with an amazing effort at the finals. While winning the NCAA team title was an impressive accomplishment in itself, the Waves made history without the immediate assistance of Geiberger, who was quarantined in his hotel room throughout the week-long road trip to Chicago after contracting the chicken pox. In the succeeding years, Geiberger’s teams continued to have postseason success. The Waves also posted top 10 NCAA finishes in 2002 (eighth) and 2004 (10th). The Santa Barbara native

graduated from Bishop Diego High School in 1986. After spending two years at The College of the Desert in Palm Desert, Calif., Geiberger transferred to Pepperdine and earned a bachelor’s degree in organizational communications in 1993. During Geiberger’s collegiate career at Pepperdine, the Waves captured WCC titles in 1989 and 1991. Playing under head coach Kurt Schuette, Geiberger earned All-WCC accolades in 1990 and 1991. He was the team’s top scorer during the 1989-90 season. In addition to playing in numerous amateur tournaments, Geiberger previously caddied on a regular basis for his father, Al, on the PGA Senior Tour for six seasons (1991-96). In the summer of 1999, the Geibergers were chosen “Family of the Year” by the Professional Golfer’s Association of America. Under Geiberger’s direction, the Pepperdine men’s golf team has hosted a semi-annual collegiate event, The Club Glove Intercollegiate, at Saticoy Country Club. During the summer of 1996, Geiberger spearheaded the first-ever Wave Round-Up, a fundraising tournament geared specifically for alumni of the Pepperdine men’s golf program, and has another fundraising tournament, “A Day with the Pros,” during the fall that benefits the men’s golf program. The event is held annually at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif. Geiberger and his wife, Elizabeth, reside in Westlake Village.

Heading into the 2009-10 campaign, Brendan von Doehren is in his third full season and fourth overall as an assistant coach with the Pepperdine men’s golf program. Von Doehren joined the Waves for the spring 2007 semester and aided a team that captured the West Coast Conference crown and made an appearance at the NCAA West Regionals. The Waves again returned to NCAA Regional play in 2008 and 2009. A three-year letterwinner at Loyola Marymount from 2003-06, von Doehren was a part of LMU’s first-ever WCC title and NCAA Championships appearance in 2006. He also served two years as team captain. Von Doehren’s best finish at LMU was a tie for third at the 2004 Santa Clara Invitational. Von Doehren is a 2002 graduate of Auburn (Wash.) High School, where he was a four-year letterwinner and served three years as team captain. He earned all-league honors all four years and placed third in the state championships as a senior. Both of von Doehren’s parents, Jennifer and James, are college golf coaches and his sister, Emily, currently works for the Southern California Golf Association in North Hollywood, Calif. Von Doehren, who earned a business law degree from Loyola Marymount in May 2006, is currently pursuing an MBA from Pepperdine’s Graziadio Business School. He resides in Sherman Oaks.

MEN’S GOLF HISTORY Winner of the 1997 NCAA Championships, the Pepperdine men’s golf team has blossomed into a nationally recognized program. The Waves have made seven appearances at the NCAA Championships since 1993, and have established themselves as a perennial national contender. No West Coast Conference program has had more success than Pepperdine, as the Waves have captured 16 WCC championships between 1987 and 2007. Pepperdine has finished either first or second at the WCC Championship 18 times in the last 22 years, and Pepperdine has advanced to the NCAA West Regional Championships in 16 of the last 17 seasons. Golf had its roots at Pepperdine’s old Los Angeles campus. Although historical records are sketchy, Pepperdine fielded its first-ever golf team in the late 1940s or early 1950s. Wayne Wright, the University’s former athletics director, served as the team’s mentor from 1965-68. When Pepperdine made its move to the Malibu campus in the early 1970s, the program was dropped. It was reinstituted a decade later in 1981-82, and Dr. Bob Gilliam, a former professor at the University, served as the Waves’ head coach for three seasons before Bob Yokoi assumed the duties in 1984-85. At this time, the University began to make a serious financial commitment toward the program. In addition to providing funds for scholarships, the program was aided by the fact that Yokoi was a staff member at the nearby North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village. Thus, team members could receive professional instruction and also benefit from consistent practice opportunities at a top-flight facility. In 1987, Pepperdine achieved its first notable success, as the Waves upset several local collegiate powers and claimed the championship of the Southern California Invitational at Torrey Pines Country Club in San Diego. The Waves’ Jim Johnson won the individual title. That particular tournament victory signaled the arrival of the Pepperdine program. Pepperdine won its first-ever West Coast Conference golf title that same year, and Johnson earned a spot competing as an individual at the NCAA Championships — a first-time accomplishment for a Waves’ player. Kurt Schuette, a player at Pepperdine for two seasons in the mid-1980s, assumed the head coaching duties in the fall of 1988, marking the first time that the University had employed a full-time golf coach. Under Schuette’s guidance, the program continued to make positive advances. Highlights included the creation of an annual fundraising tournament, building a highly competitive tournament schedule and improved recruiting efforts. Pepperdine won the WCC championship in 1989 (Schuette’s first season as the Waves’ head coach). At the 1993 NCAA West Regional in Provo, Utah, the Waves placed seventh overall, thus securing a first-ever team berth to the NCAA Championships. Under the direction of first-year head coach Todd Andrews, Pepperdine finished fourth at the 1996 NCAA West Regional at the Stanford Golf Course, thus securing an NCAA Championships berth for just the second time in school history. Pepperdine traveled to Chattanooga, Tenn., to compete against the nation’s top teams at The Honors Course, and the Waves finished 24th in the 30-team field. Pepperdine completed the 1995-96 campaign ranked #22 nationally by Golfweek and #23 in the Rolex Collegiate listing.

John Geiberger assumed the head coaching duties in the fall of 1996, inheriting a talent-laden team with extensive experience. Pepperdine used a late-season surge to advance to the 1997 NCAA West Regional, and the Waves finished ninth at the 18-team event at the Carlton Oaks Country Club in Santee, Calif. Making its second consecutive NCAA Championship appearance, Pepperdine outperformed the nation’s top teams at the Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill., near Chicago, and claimed its first-ever NCAA men’s golf championship. Seniors Jason Gore and Michael Walton finished third and fifth, respectively, in the final individual standings at the NCAA Championships, and were both All-American honorable mention selections by the

Golf Coaches Association of America. Pepperdine completed the year ranked #8 nationally by Golfweek and #15 in the Rolex Collegiate listing. In 2000, Pepperdine finished ninth at the NCAA West Regional and advanced to the NCAA Championships at The Grand National Golf Course in Opelika, Ala. Sophomore Michael Beard earned individual medalist honors at the NCAA Regional Championships and earned All-American honors. The Waves earned their second top 10 NCAA finish in program history in 2002, as they placed eighth at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. Beard tied for eighth and earned All-American honors again. The Waves made their

sixth NCAA Championships appearance in 2004 and finished 10th at The Cascades Golf Course in Hot Springs, Va. Junior All-American Michael Putnam led Pepperdine as he finished fourth. The Waves’ seventh NCAA appearance came when they traveled to Sunriver, Ore., for the 2006 NCAA Championships.

Two Pepperdine men’s golfers — Jason Allred in 2002 and Michael Putnam in 2005 — have been recipients of the Byron Nelson Award, which is presented annually by The Golf Coaches Association of America. The award is presented to a graduating senior. The selection committee considers equally a nominee’s entire collegiate academic career, collegiate golf career and his character and integrity while in college. Particular consideration is given to a nominee’s good citizenship, as portrayed by Mr. Byron Nelson over the course of his life and golf career. Allred was a two-time Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar (2001 and 2002) and a three-time West Coast Conference All-Academic honoree. He earned PING All-American third team honors as a senior. He also led Pepperdine’s Christian student-athlete group, “The Goal,” and posted six top 10 finishes in 2002. Allred finished second at the 2002 WCC Championships, third at the TaylorMade Intercollegiate and claimed medalist honors at The Club Glove Intercollegiate. “To think that someone has seen in me character and a passion for things I believe are important is encouraging and humbling,” Allred said. “More than anything I’m excited and totally thankful that Mr. Nelson was directly involved. It was an honor to have the opportunity to meet him. It’s a challenge in college to balance everything. I just try to do everything with as much joy and passion as I can. I believe that’s what God has in store for me.” In addition to becoming a three-time All-American and a two-time Academic All-American, Putnam earned All-WCC honors four times, was named the conference’s Golfer of the Year in 2003, selected WCC All-Academic on three occasions and was named All-Pacific Region three times. Putnam put together the greatest season of any Pepperdine men’s golfer in school history in 2005. He registered a school-record 70.58 stroke average in 45 rounds and produced 10 top 10 finishes, including tying for individual medalist honors at the Oregon Duck Invitational and the NCAA Championships. He finished as national runner-up following a three-hole playoff. In 2006, Pepperdine’s Alex Coe was one of five finalists for the prestigious award.

Pepperdine posted a three-over-par score of 287 to hold off a furious final day charge by Wake Forest and claim its first-ever NCAA men’s golf title on May 31, 1997, at the Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill., near Chicago. Heading into the final round, Pepperdine held a two-shot lead over tournament host Northwestern. The Waves withstood the pressure with a final-round 287. They watched their closest challengers fall off the pace and completed the four-day, 72-hole tournament with a team total of a 12-over-par 1,148 to beat runner-up Wake Forest by three shots. Wake Forest began the day in 11th place, but the Demon Deacons carded a five-under-par score of 279 to zoom up the leaderboard and make things close. Clemson posted an even-par score of 284 and finished in third place with a final total of 1,153, five shots behind Pepperdine. The Waves, making their third-ever appearance at the NCAA Championships, were seeded 24th at the 30-team event. Pepperdine competed at the tournament without the services of first-year head coach John Geiberger, who traveled with the team to Chicago but was confined to his hotel room after contracting the chicken pox. Kevin Marsh, a former player at Pepperdine from 1993-96, and Tim Wilhelm, a former Pepperdine Associate Athletic Director, assisted the team during the tournament. “It was a really tough week to miss, but, to tell you the truth, I was pretty sick all week,” said Geiberger from his hotel room after Pepperdine had secured the national championship. “But, I feel great now. I am chowing on a steak, and I have the national championship trophy here in my room ... so I must be okay.” The Waves departed for Chicago on May 24, and Geiberger indicated that he began feeling ill later that evening. “At first, I thought I just had the flu, but by Monday I knew it was something worse,” Geiberger said. Geiberger did not attend the practice rounds on May 26 and 27, and was eventually confined to his room at the Deerfield Hyatt. In fact, Geiberger never laid eyes on the Conway Farms Golf Club until he watched the live final-round coverage on ESPN. Pepperdine players inked Geiberger’s initials and 425 — his hotel room number — on the back of their hats at the beginning of the tournament as a tribute to their ailing coach. “There were so many good teams at the NCAA Championships, but, prior to the event, I was confident that we would play well,” Geiberger said. “I just prepared the team as the year went along, and in February I started to get a great feeling about the team. We had two guns (Jason Gore and Michael Walton) as good as anyone in the country, and they proved that during the tournament.” Clemson junior Charles Warren beat Brad Elder of Texas on the first sudden-death playoff hole at the NCAA Championships to claim the individual title in the 100th anniversary year of the event. Warren dropped a short par putt to claim the crown after he and Elder had tied at five-under par 279 through 72 holes. Pepperdine senior Jason Gore held a one-shot lead heading into the final hole, but suffered a double-bogey and had to settle for a third-place tie with Keith Nolan of East Tennessee State at four-under-par 280. “It was the best double-bogey that I ever made,” Gore said. “I heard that we had a six-stroke lead in the team standings, and there were 50 million thoughts running through my head so it was hard to play golf. It doesn’t matter that I did not win the individual championship because I love all of these guys and the team trophy is what college golf is all about.” Pepperdine senior Michael Walton finished fifth in the final individual standings at three-under-par 281 after firing an impressive score of 68 in the final round. “The whole week was magical,” Walton said. “Coach got the chicken pox, and Kevin (Marsh) just happened to be here. The circumstances were nothing like what we expected, but we are all great players and we knew we had to play our best golf in order to win. This is the best feeling you could ever imagine.” Junior Andy Walker tied for 20th place at four-over-par 288, and indicated that the experience of competing at the NCAA Championships the previous year was a big advantage. “We did not come here (to the NCAA Championships) to just

experience playing again,” Walker said. “There is so much you can get caught up in here, and that is what happened to us last year — we forgot to play golf. The main thing is we had fun and the whole experience has been amazing.” Adding to the story, Pepperdine had just barely advanced to the NCAA Championships. The Waves finished ninth at the NCAA West Regional, held May 15-17 at the Carleton Oaks Country Club in Santee, Calif., and edged Brigham Young by just one shot to secure the final berth.

THIS IS

“What We hope to build is much more than a beautiful campus. it Will, as you can sense, be that. but if that is all We shall have accomplished, We shall have failed. What We hope to create here, in these hills, is a spirit of place. a place Where minds Will be opened, Where lives Will be changed, Where lasting relationships Will be formed.”

PEPPERDINE• Malibu is located right alongside the Pacific Ocean, just about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Pepperdine’s picturesque campus is just a few hundred yards up the hill from Malibu Beach. The Malibu area, as well as all of Southern California, offers tremendous recreation, sporting and entertainment opportunities.

• Pepperdine’s motto is “Freely ye received, freely give” (Matt. 10:8).

• Pepperdine is an independent, medium-sized Christian institution committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values.

• Approximately 8,000 students are enrolled in five colleges and schools, including Seaver College, the flagship undergraduate school of liberal arts and sciences. A bachelor’s degree is available in nearly 40 areas of study.

• Pepperdine was ranked number 56 by the U.S. News and World Report’s list of America’s best colleges in 2009 (and is the only West Coast Conference school in the top 100).

• Pepperdine was awarded the title of “Most Beautiful Campus” by the Princeton Review in 2005.

• The student-to-faculty ratio is 13:1.

Page 33: 2009-10 Pepperdine Men's Golf Media Guide

UNIVERSITY• Students and alumni consistently cite the quality, accessibility and caring nature of the faculty and staff as among Pepperdine’s major strengths.

• There are 395 full-time teaching faculty, and 98% of full-time faculty have earned doctoral degrees. Students are provided with experiential opportunities, including research projects and internships so that their knowledge can be put to practice.

• 75% of Pepperdine undergraduates receive some form of financial assistance.

• Pepperdine University is respected both nationally and internationally. Students come to Pepperdine from all 50 states and more than 70 countries worldwide. Additionally, nearly 60% of Pepperdine’s undergraduate students study abroad at one point within one more than 20 international programs.

• Pepperdine was recently voted as having the seventh-best study-abroad program in the nation by the Institute of International Education. Study-abroad programs include Heidelberg, Germany; London, England; Florence, Italy; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Lausanne, Switzerland; and Shanghai, China.

ATHLETIC Pepperdine is classified as an NCAA Division I-AAA school (Division I schools that do not sponsor football), and the Waves are one of the very best of their kind. Since the I-AAA Athletic Director’s Association All-Sports Trophy was established, ranking the various schools on their postseason success, Pepperdine has finished in the top six every single time, including in first place twice (2004-05 and 2005-06).

In the annual NACDA Director’s Cup standings, which measures overall postseason success, Pepperdine has finished first among all of its West Coast Conference rivals for 13 straight years.

BaseballThe 1992 College World Series champions, Pepperdine baseball has recorded a remarkable 32 straight 30-win seasons. The Waves have advanced to the NCAA Championships 25 times, including five times under head coach Steve Rodriguez. Pepperdine has captured 17 regular-season WCC crowns and four WCC Championship Series titles. Twenty-nine alums have gone on to success in Major League Baseball.

Men’s BasketballOver the years, the Pepperdine men’s basketball program has made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, captured at least a share of 16 conference titles, won three West Coast Conference Tournament titles and sent dozens of players into professional basketball. Head coach Tom Asbury was one of the top coaches in the WCC’s history from 1989-94 and he has returned to Malibu to help the program thrive once again.

Women’s BasketballWith seven postseason appearances in the last 11 seasons, the Pepperdine women’s basketball team has developed into a consistent winner and a contender in the West Coast Conference. The Waves made their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2000 with an at-large bid, then captured the WCC Tournament title and subsequent NCAA appearances in 2002, 2003 and 2006, the most recent coming under head coach Julie Rousseau.

Cross Country / TrackHead coach Robert Radnoti has the goal of national prominence for his cross country and track programs. The Waves were extremely strong in these sports at their South-Central campus from the 1930s to the 1960s, with All-Americans and Olympians to their credit. However, the programs were dropped briefly when the university moved its campus to Malibu. The Waves have made great strides in cross country over the years and track was added again in the past few years.

Women’s SoccerOne of the youngest programs on Pepperdine’s campus, the women’s soccer team has quickly developed into among the strongest in recent years. Since its inaugural season in 1993, the Waves have posted 10-win seasons 10 times and made the NCAA Tournament five straight years from 2001-05. Head coach Tim Ward has helped his Waves reach the NCAA’s Sweet 16 on two occasions.

SUCCESS

Men’s GolfThe 1997 NCAA men’s golf champions and a regular at the top of the West Coast Conference’s leaderboard, Pepperdine competes with the nation’s best. The Waves have won 16 WCC titles since 1987 and have 11 straight NCAA regional appearances. Pepperdine won the NCAA title in John Geiberger’s first season and have posted two other top 10 national finishes.

Women’s GolfIn the last 16 seasons since Laurie Gibbs became head coach, the Pepperdine women’s golf program has developed into a national championship contender. The Waves have won 11 WCC titles, been to 11 straight NCAA Regional tournaments and have made nine NCAA Championships appearances. The Waves finished second in the nation in 2003 and boast four top-five finishes.

Women’s Swimming & DivingFor more than 20 years, Pepperdine has thrived in the Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference. The Waves have had nine consecutive top-five finishes under head coach Nick Rodionoff, including a program-best-tying second-place finish in 2008. Ten of Pepperdine’s 20 record times have come under Rodionoff’s watch.

Men’s TennisNo team has been more consistent then Pepperdine’s men’s tennis program, which wins the West Coast Conference title and makes the NCAA Tournament with amazing regularity. The Waves have won 40 WCC titles, including 19 in a row. Led by head coach Adam Steinberg, the Waves reached the pinnacle in 2006 and won the national championship.

Women’s TennisNo coach has been on staff at Pepperdine for more consecutive years than Gualberto Escudero, who took over as women’s tennis head coach in 1977-78. His tenure has featured WCC titles (21, including seven in a row), NCAA Tournament appearances (26, with 12 in a row) and top 25 finishes (including eight times in the nation’s top 10).

Men’s VolleyballPepperdine’s most successful program has won five NCAA men’s volleyball championships, second-most of any school, with the last title coming in 2005. The program is synonymous with head coach Marv Dunphy, who was responsible for four of the titles and has also had a long association with USA Volleyball. Pepperdine has made the NCAA Championships event on 15 occasions, including six times in the past decade.

Women’s VolleyballFor most of its history, the Pepperdine women’s volleyball program has boasted one of the nation’s top coaches in Nina Matthies, who took over in 1983. Since the West Coast Conference added women’s volleyball, the Waves have been the league’s dominant program with 10 titles. Since 1981, the Waves have made 20 trips to the NCAA Championships, including 11 in the last 12 years.

Men’s Water PoloPepperdine was the host site of the 1984 Olympic water polo competition, so it should be no surprise that the Waves excel in the sport. Pepperdine has advanced to the NCAA Championships 12 times in its history and captured the national crown in 1997. Current coach Jack Kocur was a player on that title team. The Waves have won at least a share of conference titles nine times and have finished in the top 10 in the national rankings every year since 1976.

The Pepperdine University Athletics Department is committed to a program of life skills that provides educational experiences and services in order to develop well-balanced life styles for student-athletes; to encourage growth in decision making, planning and fulfillment of career and life goals; and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the university setting.

The program is required for every incoming freshman and transfer student-athlete. Nationally recognized speakers and a life skills class are part of the program. Topics are chosen to support the following commitment purpose statements:

• Commitment to Academic Excellence — To support the academic progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation.

• Commitment to Athletics Excellence — To build philosophical foundations for the development of athletics programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student athlete.

Pepperdine University’s goal is to “strengthen lives for purpose, service and leadership” and the Pepperdine Athletics Department is a strong believer in helping its student-athletes to meet this goal. The school’s athletic teams embrace the concept of volunteerism and service to the community. Teams are regularly taking on projects that will better the lives of others.

Step Forward is an annual day held each fall that is devoted to community service, when more than a thousand Pepperdine students, staff, faculty and alumni will disperse throughout Southern California in order to lend a hand to those in need. Pepperdine’s athletic teams have been front and center as part of this event, as well as other service opportunities year-round.

COMMUNITY

LIFE SKILLS/SAAC• Commitment to Personal Development — To support the

development of a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision making skills.

• Commitment to Service — To engage the student-athlete in service to his/her campus and surrounding communities.

• Commitment to Career Development — To encourage the student-athlete to develop and pursue career and life goals.

The Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) is comprised of two student leaders from each athletic team at Pepperdine. National SAACs at a glance:

• Generate a student-athlete voice within the NCAA structure.

• Solicit student-athlete response to proposed NCAA legislation.

• Recommend potential NCAA legislation.• Review, react and comment to the governance structure

on legislation, activities and subjects of interest.• Actively participate in the administrative process of

athletics programs and the NCAA.• Promote a positive student-athlete image.

ATHLETICS DEPARTMENTPEPPERDINE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHYThe Athletics Department supports and endorses the Pepperdine University Mission Statement. At Pepperdine University, student-athletes will be provided with opportunities to achieve goals as stated by the University founder, Mr. George Pepperdine. His original statement of purpose is still the guiding principle of the University: “Therefore, as my contribution to the well-being and happiness of this generation and those that follow, I am endowing this institution to help young men and women prepare themselves for a life of usefulness in this competitive world and to help them build a foundation of Christian character and faith which will survive the storms of life.”

Intercollegiate student-athletes representing Pepperdine University will be bonafide students pursuing degree programs of their choice who enjoy the opportunity to develop their athletics abilities consistent with the high standards of academic scholarship, sportsmanship, leadership and institutional tradition.

Further, it is recognized that the Pepperdine University Athletics Program:

• is an integral part of a total university spectrum involving students, faculty, administrators, staff and patrons.

• should develop character, maturity and a sense of fair play as well as athletics excellence.• should promote pride in the University among students, faculty, staff and community

supporters.• should generate revenue to support, in part, all intercollegiate athletics teams representing

the University.• should abide by the letter and spirit of the law requiring nondiscrimination on the basis of

sex, race, creed or national origin.• must abide by all rules and regulations as set forth by the institution, the governing

conferences and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

PEPPERDINE ATHLETICS OBJECTIVESAmong the objectives of the Pepperdine University Athletics program are the following:

• to develop an awareness and understanding of the human person, including intellectual, physical, social and spiritual dimensions.

• to encourage scholarship, leadership, sportsmanship, fair play and an appreciation of opponents and amateur athletics.

• to develop teamwork, respect for authority and an appreciation of rules and regulations governing the game.

• to develop an attitude of responsibility to society.• to develop an appreciation for the beauty of physical performance and aesthetic values.• to prepare students for meaningful and satisfying careers.• to help students gain understanding and respect for individuals from other backgrounds and

cultures.• to encourage students to become involved in neighborhood and community service

activities.• to field disciplined and competitive teams seeking superior athletic performance within

established rules and ethical conduct.• to schedule appropriate competition for the athletes and teams.• to have the University’s Athletics Department recognized as an ethical leader and an

example of excellence in management, performance and conduct.• to provide superior facilities for competition, training and teaching.• to seek continual improvement in the system of intercollegiate athletics by reducing

pressures on coaches which might lead to improprieties.• to create a positive, enjoyable and fun home event experience for Pepperdine students,

faculty, staff, alumni and fans.

When the West Coast Conference first got its start back in 1952, the founders really had only one goal in mind — to create a convenient way for five Bay Area schools to play basketball. What has grown from that original vision some 57 years ago is a marvelously cohesive athletics league that is competitive at a national level in 13 sports. The eight current members of the WCC span the western coast of the United States from Canada to Mexico. Though the institutions range from the pine forests of Eastern Washington to the sun-drenched beaches of Southern California, the combined excellence in academics and athletics sets the conference apart on the national scene and draws the individual institutions together in a common mission. The WCC sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball. Originally chartered as the California Basketball Association, the five-team league included Pacific, Saint Mary’s, San Francisco, San Jose State and Santa Clara, and the first-ever men’s basketball game was played January 2, 1953. After three seasons of play under that name, the conference expanded to include Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine in 1955, and became known as the West Coast Athletic Conference in 1956. The name was shortened in 1989. The current alignment of Gonzaga University, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University, University of Portland, Saint Mary’s College, University of San Diego, University of San Francisco and Santa Clara University has remained unchanged since 1979, making the WCC the

third-most stable athletic conference in the nation. Only the Ivy League and the Pacific-10 Conference have been together longer. Women’s sports were incorporated into the WCC prior to the 1985-86 season, and the league has made steady improvements in several sports, particularly basketball, soccer and volleyball. Since joining the WCC prior to the 1955-56 season, Pepperdine has claimed 129 WCC regular-season team championships in the following sports: baseball (17), men’s basketball (12), women’s basketball (4), men’s golf (16), women’s golf (11), women’s soccer (1), men’s tennis (40), women’s tennis (21) and women’s volleyball (10). Additionally, the men’s and women’s basketball team have each won the league’s postseason tournament three times. The baseball team has won the WCC Championship Series four times. The league relocated its headquarters in the summer of 1998 to San Bruno near the San Francisco International Airport. The WCC hired Jamie Zaninovich as its commissioner in March 2008.

WCC

MPSF PCSC The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation was established during the 1992-93 academic year to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic and West Coast Conferences and other selected universities in the western United States; and to provide championship competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The MPSF was originally formed to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation; to contain the costs of competition; and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. The Federation has served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and as a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. In men’s volleyball, the Waves have won five regular season and four tournament titles. Pepperdine competes against BYU, Cal State Northridge, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Pacific, Stanford, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and USC. MPSF schools have won 14 of the 17 NCAA men’s volleyball championships since the conference was created (including one by Pepperdine). In men’s water polo, the Waves have won two regular-season crowns. Pepperdine competes against California, Long Beach State, Pacific, Stanford, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and USC. MPSF schools have won all 17 NCAA men’s water polo championships since the conference was created (including one by Pepperdine).

Pepperdine has been a member of the Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference for more than 20 years. The PCSC has allowed a number of swimming programs of all shape and size — NCAA Division I, II and III and the NAIA — who are not affiliated with a major conference to come together and participate at a championship meet. The Waves swim against Alaska-Fairbanks, Biola, California Baptist, Cal State East Bay, Chapman, Concordia, Fresno Pacific, Loyola Marymount, Northern Colorado, Seattle, Soka, UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz. Pepperdine has always been among the top programs in the PCSC and tied its best-ever finish with a second-place showing in 2008.
