Idaho State GOLF AND TENNIS Quick Facts

Why the Bengals? How did Idaho States athletic teams become the Bengals, when there just arent any to be found in the region? A good question. Originally, when the school was the Academy of Idaho in 1902, the schools athletic teams were dubbed Bantams, and it stayed that way until 1917, when J.A. Fogt became head football coach. Now Idaho Tech, the teams nickname was changed to Tigers, in part due to Ralph Hutchinson, who was the Director of Physical EducationandAthletics.HutchinsonwasagraduateofPrinceton(theTigers),sohefoundedtheschoolsfirstbooster club, the I Club, and brought the Tiger mascot with him. When the school became the University of Idaho-Southern Branch in 1927, the nickname switched to Bengals, although many newspaper and yearbook accounts refer to the team by both Bengals and Tigers. The freshman teams during this time suffered the unfortunate distinction of the nickname Kittens. As a branch of the University of Idaho, the schools colors were black and gold, just like the Vandals, and althoughtheofficialcolorsswitchedtoblackandorangesometimeinthe1940s,thefootballteamworeblackjerseys with gold trim through the 60s. The squad also used red numerals for a while in the late 1940s, and the squads 1970 home jerseys were more red than orange. It wasnt until 1971 that a truly orange jersey was used by thefootballteamforthefirsttime. The schoolsofficialcolorsareblackandorange(PMS165),and the trimcolor isgold (PMS137),a smallremembrance to harken back to ISUs rich history.

    ABOUT IDAHO STATE UNIVERSITY

Idaho State University is aCarnegie-classifieddoctoralresearch and teaching institution that draws students from around the world. It meets the growing demand for higher-education services with seven collegesArts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Health Professions, Pharmacy and Technologyand a graduate school. Together, they offer nearly 280 certificate, bachelors, masters, doctoral and post-doctoral programs. ISU is the state-designated lead institution for health-professions education. Founded in 1901 as the Academy of Idaho, Idaho State University initially offered college-prep and industrial courses.Initsfirst100years,the

school underwent considerable growth and change. Forty students were enrolled in Pocatello in 1902; today, about 14,000 students attend classes at the main campus and at centers around the state. More than 2,000 graduate annually. Idaho State Universitys role in higher education has grown dramatically. In 1927, legislation was passed making it the University of IdahoSouthern Branch. In 1963 it became Idaho State University. At

that time there were 3,500 students, four colleges offering six bachelors and eight masters degrees, and a trade and technical school with 14 programs. Current enrollment includes about 2,500 students attending ISUIdaho Falls, and more than 2,500 attending classes at ISUBoise, ISUTwin Falls, and centers in American Falls, Blackfoot, Coeur dAlene, Hailey, Preston and Soda Springs. Located in Pocatello, ISU is a short distance from several prominent recreation areas, foremost among them Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, and Sun Valley. ISU students enjoy unrivaled outdoor activities, from skiingtobackpacking,bicycling,river-running,andfishinginIdahos famous blue-ribbon trout streams.

The original campus consisted of a four-block area of 8 1/2 acres donated by the citizens of Pocatello. Today, ISU has 105 buildings and 1,103 acres. The university offers cultural events and athletic programs featuring local, national and

The Idaho Accelerator Center at ISUs research park allows for researchers and national laboratories to

    utilize special nuclear facilities.

The clock tower is one of the newer additions to the Pond Student Union Building, which houses ISUs official bookstore, several dining

options, a game room, a billiards hall, and a

    bowling alley.

The columns on Red Hill are a Pocatello landmark. They are atop of Red Hill, which overlooks Davis Field, which is home to Idaho States track and Womens Basketball programs.

The newest addition to the campus is the Rendezvous Center, which will house apartment-

style student housing, a dining hall, and classrooms, and the building is seen as a bridge

between the upper and lower campuses.

This view of the quad was taken from the Pond Student Union Building, and it showcases the beauty of both Idaho State and Pocatello. The trees located in

the center of the picture are part of ISUs Arbor Walk, and the

mountains that border Pocatello to the east majestically watch

    over the campus.

ACADEMIC SERVICES Everyacademicinstitutionsfirstresponsibilityis to prepare its students for the best opportunity to graduate with their fullest potential. Idaho State understands this responsibility very well and instituted the Student-Athlete Support Center for its student-athletes, to enable them to balance the time requirements for both academics and athletics with the ultimate goal of obtaining their degree. Under the direction of Nancy Graziano, and assisted by a strong and caring staff, the Student-Athlete Support Center provides a variety of services with that in mind. The centers function begins even before a student-athlete sets foot on campus with transcript evaluation, and continues in helping the newcomer make the transition from high school or junior college to college. When they arrive at ISU we want it to be a positive experience, Graziano says. The Student-Athlete Support Center serves as a liaison for the student-athlete to all services available to the student population as a whole, including but not limited to career counseling, the

counseling and testing office, the academic skillscenter, the registrar, financial aid, the placementoffice, postgraduate scholarships, and any otherstudent services. The office also provides tutoring, helpsthe student-athlete stay on track for graduation and NCAA eligibility, provides advising on general education courses until a major course of study is selected, and helps with career choices with the idea in mind that a college education can be more meaningfulwhenacareerisdecidedon.Theofficealso makes presentations on drug and alcohol awareness available to the student-athletes. Even though our graduation rates are good, we are constantly striving to improve them, Graziano says. The creation of the Student-Athlete Support Center is a positive step in that improvement. The refurbished Student-Athlete Support Center was dedicated in 2003 and is located on the south side of Holt Arena. As part of the refurbishment, student computers and additional space for

academic counseling were added, bringing added benefitstothestudents. The department continues to expand, as in 2008, an expanded study center in Turner Hall was opened. The new center was funded with a $40,000 grant obtained by Matt Steuart from the NCAA. The new study area features over a dozen computer stations, a quiet room, and has available tutoring for the student-athletes.

    bengal village

In September of 2006, Idaho State University unveiled the Athletic Facilities Master Plan, a plan that features several new facilities and practice areas that will change the look of the upper section of the Idaho State University campus. The new all-encompassing complex will be called Bengal Village and it is the focal point of the Athletic Facilities Master Plan, which was the culmination of an 18-month process. Bengal Village now serves as the tangible long-term vision for Bengal Athletics.Bengal Village centers itself around Holt Arena, and it includes an indoor practicefacility, anewoutdoorsyntheticturfpracticefootballfield, abasketballarena, a new softball complex, tennis courts, and a new building connecting variousnewfacilitiesthatwillhousenewoffices, anacademiccenter, weightrooms, training area, and locker rooms, along with a potential Hall of Fame and meeting space.Papenberg Field (named after a lead gift of $1.6 million from Sylvia Papenberg and her late husband Done) will be located on the east side of Holt Arena where a parking lot is currently located. Miller Ranch Stadium will be located on the site of the current South Practice Field. The parking lot to the east of the currentpracticefiledwillbecomethesiteofanewindoorpracticefacilitythatwouldincludea60-70yardfootballfieldthatcanbeusedbythefootballteam

as well as other ISU athletic teams. The facility would also include three indoor basketball/volleyball courts as well. The north side of Holt Arena will be the site of the new basketball arena, which when completed will seat approximately 7,500 fans. The new basketball complex will be connected to Holt Arena. On the south side of Holt Arena, on the site of the current South Practice Field, a new softball complex will be constructed, using Holt Arena as a hitters backdrop. The plan will also include several upgrades to Holt Arena, including seismic improvements, heating and ventilation improvements, new turf, and acoustical improvements, along with the addition of a new press box and donor suites.Centralized and connected to the indoor practice facility and Holt Arena will be a new building designed with locker rooms, a permanent Hall of Fame, offices, trainingroom, meetingrooms, andpotentialboosterareasaswell.Thisbuilding will have access to both Holt Arena, the indoor practice facility, the softballcomplex, andtheoutdoorfootballpracticefield. The plan was developed in conjunction with the vision statement developed by ISU Athletics and the Planning Committee. The goal was to develop a plan that is both enviable and practical for meeting the needs of a NCAA Division I athletic program. The Bengal Village concept took 11 months in all from the start of meeting in November of 2005.

The Big Sky Conference enters its 46th year of athletic competition in 2008-09. The Big Sky is an NCAA Division I member in all sports, with member institutions classified in theFootball Championship Subdivision (formally I-AA). The Big Sky returned to a nine-team format in 2006 with the addition of the University of Northern Colorado after spending five years as an eight-member league.

The current lineup includes Eastern Washington, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State*, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Portland State, Sacramento State and Weber State. The league has become one of the strongest Division I conferences in the West and is a national leader in I-AA football. The Big Sky Conference was established in 1963 by six charter members Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga, Montana, Montana State* and Weber State. Those six schools formed the foundation of the Big Sky before the league expanded in 1970 by adding Boise State and Northern Arizona. Gonzaga left the Sky in 1979 and was replaced by Nevada, which gave the league eight members. The conference grew to nine schools in 1987 with the addition of Eastern Washington. The 1990s saw change in the makeup of the league, beginning in 1992 when Nevada departed and put the Big Sky back at eight teams. In 1996 Boise State and Idaho

left and at the same time the conference added Portland State, Sacramento State and Cal State Northridge. The Big SkymaintainednineteamsforfiveyearsbeforeCalStateNorthridge departed in the spring of 2001.With the addition of Northern Colorado, the Big Sky spreads across seven states spanning from thePacificOcean tothe Rocky Mountain Front. The Big Sky is represented along the entire west coast with schools in Washington, Oregon and California. League schools also range up and down the Rocky Mountains with institutions in Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and now Colorado.Of the eight western-most states in the contiguous United States only one, Nevada, is not represented in the Big Sky.On Feb 25, 1963, the name Big Sky was adopted by the six presidents of the charter members as the name of the new conference. The name Big Sky originated in a novel written by the late A.B. (Bud) Guthrie of Great Falls, Mont., in 1947 entitled The Big Sky. Jack Hollowell, a former Montana advertising director, promoted the Big Sky theme for the Treasure State, and Harry Missildine of the Spokane Spokesman-Review called for the newly formed

league to be named the Big Sky Conference in his column dated Feb. 20, 1963.The Big Sky sponsors championships in 14 sports, including mens and womens cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, basketball and tennis. In addition, there are also championships in football, and womens Womens Basketball, golf and Womens Basketball. The 2007-08 season will mark the 20th year that the Big Sky Conference will sponsor championships in womens sports. The former Mountain West Conference existed from 1982-88, sponsoring championships for womens sports at the same institutions the Big Sky had mens

programs. The Big Sky merged with the Mountain West in 1988, forming one league for both men and women.Doug Fullerton, the fifth commissioner of the Big SkyConference, will enter his 12th year at the helm. Fullerton took over the Big Sky on July 1, 1995, replacing longtime commissioner Ron Stephenson. Stephenson served the league for 14 years. Steve Belko was the commissioner from 1977-81 while John Roning held the post from 1971-77. Thefirst leaguecommissionerwasJackFriel, whoservedfrom 1963-71.

    kellie hooperHead Coach

    Idaho State, 1998First Season

Kellie Hooper enters her first season as the head coach for the Bengal womens golf team. She led the Bengals to a fourth place finish at the Weber State Invitational during the fall season with junior Sadie Venn posting the lowest round of the season with 78 (+7) strokes to tie for seventh place in the tournament.

Hooper graduated from Idaho State in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. She was a member of the 1994 womens Big Sky Championship team and served as team captain in her senior season. In 2009, Hooper took the ISU womens golf team to the Big Sky Conference Championship as a volunteer coach. The team went on to place the best they had in five years.

I am pleased to have Kellie join the Bengal coaching team, Idaho State Athletic Director Jeff Tingey said. As a former student-athlete at Idaho State University, she will fit in well as the leader and coach of our womens golf team. I have the upmost confidence in her abilities.

Hooper currently serves as a board member at the Oregon Trail Country Club. She is also a past board member and club champion at Winghaven Country Club in O Fallon, Mo.

I have a strong pride for the ISU Bengals, Hooper said. I graduated and played here. This is my home. Im thrilled about this opportunity to be the head womens golf coach. The Bengals sense of commitment to excellence and pride will be what sets them apart this season. They are a group of individuals that posses great talent and as a team you will see them succeed. Keep an eye out for the Idaho State womens golf team, youll be proud.
