Do not attach anything to the head re- straint stalks. Doing so could impairActive Head Restraint function.

The Active Head Restraint moves forward utiliz-

ing the force that the seatback receives from theoccupant in a rear-end collision. The movementof the head restraint helps support the occu-pants head by reducing its backward movementand helping absorb some of the forces that maylead to whiplash type injuries.

Active Head Restraints are effective for collisionsat low to medium speeds in which it is said thatwhiplash injury occurs most.

Active Head Restraints operate only in certain

rear-end collisions. After the collision, the headrestraints return to their original positions.

Properly adjust the Active Head Restraints asdescribed earlier in this section.

    32/407

There are three basic types of child restraintsystems:

    Rear facing child restraint

    Front facing child restraint

    Booster seat

The proper restraint depends on the childs size.Generally, infants up to about 1 year and lessthan 20 pounds (9 kg) should be placed in rearfacing child restraints. Front facing child re-straints are available for children who outgrowrear facing child restraints and are at least oneyear old. Booster seats are used to help positiona vehicle lap/shoulder belt on a child who can nolonger use a front facing child restraint.

    WARNING

Infants and children need special protec-tion. The vehicles seat belts may not fitthem properly. The shoulder belt maycome too close to the face or neck. Thelap belt may not fit over their small hipbones. In an accident, an improperly fit-ting seat belt could cause serious or fatalinjury. Always use appropriate child

restraints. All U.S. states and Canadian provinces or terri-tories require the use of approved child restraints

for infants and small children. See Child Re-straints later in this section.

Also, there are other types of child restraintsavailable for larger children for additional protec-

tion.NISSAN recommends that all pre-teensand children be restrained in the rear seat. According to accident statistics, childrenare safer when properly restrained in therear seat than in the front seat.

This is especially important because your vehicle has a supplemental restraint sys-tem (Air bag system) for the right frontpassenger. See Supplemental restraintsystem later in this section.

    Infants

Infants up to at least 1 year old should be placedin a rear facing child restraint. NISSAN recom-mends that infants be placed in child restraintsthat comply with Federal Motor Vehicle SafetyStandards or Canadian Motor Vehicle SafetyStandards. You should choose a child restraintthat fits your vehicle and always follow the manu-facturers instructions for installation and use.

Small ChildrenChildren that are over one year old and weigh atleast 20 lbs (9 kg) can be placed in a forward

facing child restraint. Refer to the manufacturinstructions for minimum and maximum weiand height recommendations. NISSAN recomends that small children be placed in crestraints that comply with Federal Motor Veh

Safety Standards or Canadian Motor VehSafety Standards. You should choose a crestraint that fits your vehicle and always folthe manufacturers instructions for installaand use.

    Larger children

Children who are too large for child restrashould be seated and restrained by the seat bwhich are provided. The seat belt may no

properly if the child is less than 4 feet 9 inc(142.5 cm) tall and weighs between 40 lbs kg) and 80 lbs (36 kg). A booster seat shouldused to obtain proper seat belt fit.

NISSAN recommends that a child be placed commercially available booster seat if the shoder belt in the childs seating position fits closthe face or neck or if the lap portion of the sbelt goes across the abdomen. The booster sshould raise the child so that the shoulder beproperly positioned across the top, middle p

tion of the shoulder and the lap belt is low on hips. A booster seat can only be used in seatpositions that have a three-point type seat bThe booster seat should fit the vehicle seat a

    without the booster seat.

    WARNING

Never let a child stand or kneel on anyseat and do not allow a child in the cargoareas while the vehicle is moving. Thechild could be seriously injured or killed inan accident or sudden stop.

    PREGNANT WOMEN

NISSAN recommends that pregnant women useseat belts. The seat belt should be worn snug, and always position the lap belt as low as pos-sible around the hips, not the waist. Place theshoulder belt over your shoulder and across yourchest. Never run the lap/shoulder belt over yourabdominal area. Contact your doctor for specificrecommendations.

    INJURED PERSONS

NISSAN recommends that injured persons useseat belts. Check with your doctor for specificrecommendations.

    PRECAUTIONS ON BOOSTER

    SEATSWARNING

Infants and small children should al-ways be placed in an appropriate childrestraint while riding in the vehicle.Failure to use a child restraint orbooster seat can result in serious injuryor death.

Infants and small children should nevbe carried on your lap. It is not possibfor even the strongest adult to resist tforces of a severe accident. The chcould be crushed between the adult a

parts of the vehicle. Also, do not put tsame seat belt around both your chand yourself.

NISSAN recommends that the boostseat be installed in the rear seat. Acording to accident statistics, childrare safer when properly restrainedthe rear seat than in the front seatyou must install a booster seat in tfront seat, see Booster seat instaltion in this section.

A booster seat must only be installeda seating position that has lap/shoulder belt. Failure to usethree-point type seat belt with booster seat can result in a serious jury in sudden stop or collision.

Improper use or improper installatof a booster seat can increase the rior severity of injury for both the chand other occupants of the vehicle acan lead to serious injury or death in accident.

Do not use towels, books, pillows orother items in place of a booster seat.Items such as these may move duringnormal driving or a collision and resultin serious injury or death. Booster seats

ar e designed to be used with alap/shoulder belt. Booster seats are de- signed to properly route the lap andshoulder portions of the seat belt overthe strongest portions of a childs bodyto provide the maximum protection dur-ing a collision.

Follow all of the booster seat manufac-turers instructions for installation anduse. When purchasing a booster seat,be sure to select one which will fit your

childand vehicle. It may not be possibleto properly install some types ofbooster seats in your vehicle.

If the booster seat and seat belt is notused properly, the risk of a child beinginjured in a collision or a sudden stopgreatly increases.

Adjustable seatbacks should be posi-tioned to fit the booster seat, but asupright as possible.

After placing the child in the boosterseat and fastening the seat belt, makesure the shoulder portion of the belt isaway from the childs face and neck andthe lap portion of the belt does not

cross the abdomen. Do not put the shoulder belt behind the

child or under the childs arm. If youmust install a booster seat in the front seat, see Booster seat installationlater in this section.

When your booster seat is not in use, keep it secured with a seat belt to pre- vent it from being thrown around incase of a sudden stop or accident.

    CAUTION

Remember that a booster seat left in aclosed vehicle can become very hot.Check the seating surface and bucklesbefore placing your child in the boosterseat.

Booster seats of various sizes are offeredseveral manufacturers. When selecting booster seat, keep the following points in min

Choose only a booster seat with a lacertifying that it complies with Federal MoVehicle Safety Standard 213 or CanadMotor Vehicle Safety Standard 213.

For example, if alow back booster seat 1 is chosen, thevehicle seat back must be at or above thecenter of the childs ears. If the seat back islower than the center of the childs ears, ahigh back booster seat2 should be used.

If the booster seat is compatible with yourvehicle, place your child in the booster seatand check the various adjustments to be

sure thebooster seat is compatiblewith yourchild. Always follow all recommended pro-cedures.

All U.S. states and Canadian provinces orterritories require that infants and smallchildren be restrained in an approved childrestraint at all times while the vehicle isbeing operated.

Supplemental front-impact air bag system:The NISSAN Advanced AirBag System can helpcushion the impact force to the head and chest ofthe driver and right front, passenger in certainfrontal collisions.

Front seat-mounted side-impact supple-mental air bag system (if so equipped): Thissystem can help cushion the impact force to thechest area of the driver and right front, passenger

in certain side impact collisions. The supplemen-tal side air bag is designed to inflate on the sidewhere the vehicle is impacted.

Roof-mounted curtain side-impact androllover supplemental air bag system (if soequipped): This system can help cushion theimpact force to the head of occupants in frontand rear outboard seating positions in certainside impact or rollover collisions. In a side impact,

the curtain and rollover air bags are designed toinflate on the side where the vehicle is impacted. In a rollover both curtain and rollover air bags aredesigned to inflate and remain inflated for a shorttime.

These supplemental restraint systems are de-signed tosupplement the crash protection pro-vided by the seat belts and are not a substitutefor them. Seat belts should always be correctlyworn and the occupant seated a suitable dis-tance away from the steering wheel, instrumentpanel and door finishers. See Seat belts earlierin this section for instructions and precautions onseat belt usage.

The supplemental air bags operate onlywhen the ignition switch is in the ON orSTART position.

After turning the ignition key to the ONposition, the supplemental air bag warninglight illuminates. The supplemental air bagwarning light will turn off after about 7

    WARNING

The front air bags ordinarily will notinflate in the event of a side impact, rearimpact, rollover, or lower severity fron-tal collision. Always wear your seatbelts to help reduce the risk or severityof injury in various kinds of accidents.

The front passenger air bag will notinflate if the passenger air bag statuslight is lit or if the front passenger seatis unoccupied. SeeFront passenger airbag and status light later in this

    section.

The seat belts and the front air bags are

most effective when you are sitting wellback and upright in the seat. The frontair bags inflate with great force. Evenwith the NISSAN Advanced Air Bag Sys-tem, if you are unrestrained, leaningforward, sitting sideways or out of posi-tion in any way, youare at greater risk ofinjury or death in a crash. You may alsoreceive serious or fatal injuriesfrom thefront air bag if you are up against itwhen it inflates. Always sit back againstthe seatback and as far away as practi-

cal from the steering wheel or instru-ment panel. Always use the seat belts.

The driver and front passenger seat bbuckles are equipped with sensors thdetectif the seat belts are fastened. TAdvanced Air Bag System monitors tseverity of a collision and seat belt uage then inflates the air bags. Failureproperly wear seat belts can increathe risk or severity of injury in accident.

The front passenger seat is equippwith an occupant classification sens(pressure sensor) that turns the fropassenger air bag OFF under somconditions. This sensor is only usedthis seat. Failure to be properly seatand wearing the seat belt can increa

the risk or severity of injury in an acdent. See Front Passenger air bag astatus light later in this section.

Keep hands on the outside of the steeing wheel. Placing them inside t steering wheel rim could increase trisk that they are injured when the froair bag inflates.

NISSAN Advanced Air Bag System(front seats)

This vehicle is equipped with the NISSAN Ad-vanced Air Bag System for the driver and rightfront passengerseats. This system is designed to

meet certification requirements under U.S. regu-lations. It is also permitted in Canada. However, all of the information, cautions and warn-ings in this manual still apply and must befollowed.

The driver supplemental front-impact air bag islocated in the center of the steering wheel. Thepassenger supplemental front-impact air bag ismounted in the dashboard above the glove box.The supplemental front air bags are designed toinflate in higher severity frontal collisions, al-though they may inflate if the forces in anothertype of collision are similar to those of a higherseverity frontal impact. They may not inflate incertain frontal collisions. Vehicle damage (or lackof it) is not alwaysan indication of proper front airbag system operation.

The NISSAN Advanced Air Bag System has dualstage inflators. It also monitors information fromthe crash zone sensor, the Air bag Control Unit(ACU), seat belt buckle sensors, occupant clas-

sification sensor (pressuresensor) and right frontpassenger seat belt tension sensor. Inflator op-eration is based on the severity of a collision and

seat belt usage for the driver. For the right fro
