REVIEWING LAST YEAR’S GAME The DePauw defense recorded its first shutout in two years and Jeremiah Marks rushed for three touchdowns to tie the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference career scoring record as the Tigers took a 21-0 victory at Rhodes. DePauw improved to 7-2 with its third straight win and finished SCAC play at 5-2, while the Lynx dropped to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the SCAC. “Our defense played tremendous football today,” head coach Matt Walker said of DePauw’s first shutout since a 34-0 win at Sewanee in 2005. The Tigers scored on their second possession after Jevon Pruitt returned a Rhodes punt 40 yards to the Lynx 5. On the second play from scrimmage, Marks put the Tigers up 7-0 with a 2-yard run.

On the ensuing possession, Rhodes drove to the DePauw 23, but Chris Catalanotto missed a 40-yard field goal with 4:15 left in the first. Early in the second Brendan Smith missed a 37-yard field goal try for the Tigers after DePauw drove inside the Rhodes red zone. Midway through the second, DePauw drove to the Rhodes 16, but Spud Dick’s keeper on fourth was short of a first down. The Lynx then drove to the Tigers’ 26, but an incomplete pass gave the ball back to the Tigers. The Tigers’ second score was set up after Rhodes fumbled Adam Hill’s punt and the Tigers recovered at the Lynx 16. Marks rushed in from the 1 to make it 14-0 with 5:46 left in the third. Marks then made it 21-0 with his third score of the day as he rushed from two yards out on the first play of the fourth quarter. The touchdown lifted his career total to 54 touchdowns and 324 points which tied Centre’s Tim McDaniel (1988-91) for the all-time SCAC record in both categories. The Tigers outgained Rhodes 319-175 includ-ing a 145-88 margin on the ground. Marks finished with 87 yards in 27 carries, while Curtis Moore added 50 yards in 14 tries. Dick completed 19 of 34 passes for 174 yards with six going to Alex Koors. Charles Hoggard led Rhodes with 59 rushing yards in 19 tries, while quarterback Matt Ungashick completed 7 of 20 for 87 yards. J.J. Costello and Jevon Pruitt each finished with six tackles and Grant Wright led the way with 2.5 tackles for loss. Tarren Collins recorded DePauw’s only interception in the win. DANVILLE, Ky. — Centre scored on its first pos-session of the second half and took a 14-13 lead, but DePauw responded with 13 straight points over the next three minutes and claimed a 27-14 win over the Colonels in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams. DePauw took a 13-7 lead into the halftime, but Centre drove 62 yards in 11 plays and opened the second half with Tyler Hinkel hauling in a 22-yard scoring pass from Grant Conliffe with 10:06 left in the third. John Starks added the extra point which gave the Colonels the 14-13 advantage. Following a Centre personal foul on the point-after, the Colonels were forced to kick off from their own 15 which resulted in the Tigers beginning on their own 45. Jon Ellis carried for runs of 11 and 5 yards before quarterback Spud Dick teamed with Alex Koors for a 39-yard scoring play with 9:04 left. Jordan Havercamp’s extra point lifted DePauw to a 20-14 lead. DePauw linebacker Tarren Collins sacked Conliffe for a 10-yard loss to the Colonels’ 3 on the first play of Centre’s next possession before Grant Wright recovered Conliffe’s fumble on the next play at the Centre 2. After a loss of yards and a DePauw penalty, Dick and Koors teamed again for an 11-yard score with 7:15 remaining in the third. The DePauw defense stopped Centre on downs twice over Centre’s final four possessions with Chris Scarver and Stacy Crawford ending the other two drives with interceptions. After the teams exchanged three punts each to start the game, DePauw’s Nick Etzcorn caught a 2-yard score from Dick with 14:23 left in the second which capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive. Ellis’ 3-yard run with 10:34 remaining in the half wrapped up a 4-play, 79-yard drive and included a career-best 64-yard pass play from Dick to Koors. Centre’s lone score came on the next drive as Conliffe connected with Chase Porter for a 20-yard score with 8:15 left in the half. Dick then completed a 39-yard pass to Koors to the Centre. On the second down play, Koors seemed to have caught a touchdown strike from Dick but Centre’s Alex Ubelhart ripped the ball from Koors’ grasp for the in-terception and touchback. Koors matched the second-best single-game receiv-ing yardage total by a DePauw receiver with 220 yards on just eight catches. The 220 yards also ranks second in SCAC history and is the most in a game between SCAC opponents.

DePauw 31, Birmingham-So. 21October 11

GREENCASTLE, Ind. — In a tale of two halves DePauw rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit with 24 straight points over the final 22 minutes and took a 31-21 victory over visiting Birmingham-Southern. DePauw improved to 4-1 with the win, while Birmingham-Southern dropped to 1-4. The Tigers committed four first-half turnovers and surrendered 315 yards of offense in the opening 30 min-utes, but allowed the Panthers just two first downs and 39 yards over the final 30, while scoring on four straight possessions. DePauw took the opening kickoff 83 yards in 11 plays and Spud Dick tossed a 2-yard scoring pass to Nick Etz-corn (pictured), but the Panthers’ Eric Nordgren hauled in an 80-yard pass from running back David Langston on the first play of the ensuing series to tie the game at 7-7. A pair of Walter Arrington touchdowns, one receiving and one rushing, pushed Birmingham-Southern’s lead to 21-7 at the half. DePauw stopped the Panthers on the first series of the second half and Bryan Mulligan appeared to take the punt return all the way back but the Tigers were whistled for an illegal block inside their own five. The Tigers then embarked on a 12-play, 97-yard drive capped by Brayden Dahlstrom’s 4-yard run. Jordan Havercamp’s point-after was off the mark and Birmingham-Southern still held a 21-13 lead with 6:50 left in the third. DePauw forced the Panthers to punt on the next drive and again the Tigers were called for a penalty inside their own 20 after Mulligan returned the punt to the Birmingham-Southern 44. Beginning at their own 9, the Tigers proceeded to drive to the Panthers’ 2 before being faced with a fourth down. Following a timeout, Havercamp was called on for the short field goal attempt, but holder Michael Engle took the snap and flip it over his head to Havercamp who scampered to the right corner of the end zone for the score. Dick teamed with Mulligan for the two-point conversion and the Tigers evened the contest at 21-21 with 14:10 left. DePauw’s defense came up big again as Ryan Woo-dard and Kyle Sherer sacked Joe Thigpen on third down at the Panthers’ 11. Following a punt, the Tigers took over on the Birmingham-Southern 49 and needed just three plays before Dick connected with Alex Koors for a 38-yard score with 11:55 left to make it 28-21. The Panthers were called for penalties on back-to-back plays on the next drive forcing a third-and-30 situation. Thigpen’s pass to Luke Chapman covered 27 yards, but a delay of game penalty moved the ball back to the DePauw 41.

Trinity 45, DePauw 32October 18

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — DePauw closed to within 31-26 early in the fourth quarter, but host and 11th-ranked Trinity scored 14 unanswered to take a 45-32 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win. The Tigers dropped to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the SCAC, while Trinity (ranked 11th in the latest coaches’ poll and 18th by d3football.com) remained unbeaten at 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference. DePauw reached paydirt first as Mitchell Willsey scored on a 2-yard run with 6:04 left in the first to make it 6-0. Trinity came right back, though, and took a 7-6 lead with a 7-play, 72-yard series capped by Bryant Wilson’s 27-yard pass to Chris Coleman with 2:18 remaining in the first.

The ensuing Trinity kickoff sailed out-of-bounds and the Tigers started on their own 40. Willsey rushed for six yards on the first play before Spud Dick completed a 12-yard pass to Nick Etzcorn and connected with Bryan Mulligan for a 42-yard score which made it 13-7 with 1:00 left in the first. The hosts, however, scored on each of their next two possessions with Al Furlow scoring on a 4-yard run and Wilson teaming with Riley Curry for a 44-yard scoring pass to make it 21-13. Near the end of the half, Trinity drove to the DePauw 7, but Kyle Sherer blocked Peter Licalzi’s field goal try. Licalzi opened the second half with a 42-yard field goal to push the lead to 24-13 and Trinity attempted an onside kick. Trinity was ruled to have recovered the kick, but was whistled for a penalty for touching it before it traveled the required ten yards. After the re-kick, the Tigers drove to Trinity’s 27, but Jeff Jones picked off Dick’s pass at his own 20 and returned it all the way for a score which made it 31-13. DePauw then put together a 12-play, 74-yard drive with Dick scoring on a 2-yard keeper to close the gap to 31-20 with 2:27 left in the third. Following a long kickoff return, Trinity converted a third down on its next possession, but DePauw’s Chris Scarver picked off Wilson’s pass at the DePauw 22 and returned it to the Trinity 25. Four plays later Dick tossed a 14-yard strike to Etz-corn to make it 31-26 with 13:49 left in the game, but the two-point conversion pass failed. Trinity responded as Wilson completed 4-of-5 passes including a 20-yard score to Furlow with 10:15 remaining to push the lead to 38-26. Dick was intercepted on the first play of DePauw’s next drive by Chris Collier, but Trinity fumbled at the DePauw 2 on its second play. Trinity’s Dobby Adamson recorded the hosts’ third interception of the day when he picked off Dick on the third play after the fumble. Wilson and Coleman teamed for a 9-yard score with 4:19 remaining which extended the margin to 45-26. Dick drove the Tigers 63 yards in eight plays and connected with Etzcorn for a 9-yard score with 2:09 left. The try for two failed and Trinity recovered the ensuing onside kick and was able to run out the clock. Trinity outgained DePauw 472-353 and converted on 10-of-13 third-down situations while possessing the ball for 36:11. Willsey paced DePauw with 37 rushing yards in nine attempts, while Dick completed 24 of 45 passes for 310 yards and three touchdowns. Alex Koors caught seven for 114 yards and Mulligan also hauled in seven for 83 yards. Furlow rushed for 90 yards on 16 carries and Wilson was 28-of-35 for 295 yards and four scores. Curry caught 11 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown and Coleman had eight for 93 yards and two scores. Sherer led the DePauw defense with 13 tackles, while Ryan Preuss added nine. Marc Hoeppner and Tarren Collins each added eight. Dennis Grebe paced Trinity with nine stops and Baron Rabe added seven.

DePauw 37, Colorado Col. 34October 25

GREENCASTLE, Ind. — Alex Koors’ 5-yard touchdown catch from Spud Dick on fourth-and-goal with 13.1 seconds left forced overtime and Jordan Havercamp’s 20-yard field goal in the first extra session gave host DePauw a 37-34 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Colorado College. DePauw improved to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the SCAC, while Colorado College dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-5 in the conference. The game, just the second all-time meeting between the two schools, went to overtime for the second straight year after DePauw took a 41-40 double-overtime win in Colorado Springs last year. The Tigers opened overtime with a 17-yard pass from Dick to Mitchell Willsey and a 6-yard toss from Dick to Koors, but the drive stalled at the Colorado College 2 and Havercamp nailed his third field goal of the day. On Colorado College’s ensuing series, quarterback Jon McDonald picked up two yards on the first play before Drew DeVilbiss stopped Luke Northam for no gain on the next play and McDonald tossed an incomplete pass on third down with pressure from the Tigers’ Tarren Collins. Brickell’s 41-yard field goal attempt was just short of the crossbar. DePauw took a 21-14 lead into the intermission and extended that lead to 24-14 when Havercamp nailed a 28-yard field goal with 5:42 left in the third. The drive was kept alive by punter Adam Hill’s 33-yard pass to Brayden Dahlstrom on a fake punt from the DePauw 38. Colorado College came right back as Justin Alexander scored on an 8-yard run with 2:35 left in the third which capped an eight play, 74-yard drive and closed the gap to 24-21. Matt McDermott picked off Dick’s pass at the Colo-rado College 47 on DePauw’s first scrimmage play after the touchdown. McDonald then teamed with Ryan Nich-ols for a 28-yard pass play and the hosts were whistled for a face mask which moved the ball to the DePauw 12. McDonald picked up one yard on first down and then ran in from the 11 with 1:35 remaining in the third. Alex Fitch blocked Brickell’s extra-point attempt, but Colorado College led, 27-24. DePauw attempted its third straight punt fake on the first play of the fourth, but Colorado College stopped Hill for a 2-yard loss. The guests quickly drove to the DePauw 14, but Brickell’s 31-yard field goal try was wide right. After stopping DePauw and forcing a punt, Colorado College started on its own 41 and drove to the DePauw 10, but the Tigers’ Fitch blocked Brickell’s 28-yard field goal attempt with 7:25 left. Starting from their own 14, the Tigers needed seven plays to drive to the Colorado College 13 where Haver-camp tied the score at 27-27 with a 31-yard field goal with 6:12 left. DePauw appeared to catch a break when Jon Mc-Donald fumbled on second down of the next series and Wrona recovered. However, Derrick Karazsia fumbled

on the very next play with McDermott returning it to midfield. Alexander converted a fourth-and-1 with a 6-yard run to the DePauw 35 before Northam rambled 27 yards to the DePauw 1 on a third-and-three. Sean Farrell followed it up with a 1-yard score with 1:41 left and Brickell’s point-after made it 34-27. Following a short kickoff, DePauw started on its own 35 and Dick completed six straight passes to the Colorado College 10. Following an incomplete pass, Dick’s 9-yard strike to Dahlstrom put the Tigers’ on the Colorado Col-lege 1. Dick’s third down sneak was whistled down just shy of paydirt forcing fourth down with 17.3 seconds left. Colorado College called timeout, but DePauw was whistled for a false start prior to the ensuing snap and the ball was moved back to just outside the 5. Dick then found Koors in the end zone and Havercamp knocked in the game-tying PAT. Dick, who completed his first 11 passes of the day, finished with a career-high 404 yards on 32-of-44 passing. Bryan Mulligan hauled in 10 for 115 yards, while Koors caught eight for 82 including two scores. Karazsia, who missed the last two games to injury, totaled 95 rushing yards on 21 carries as the Tigers finished with 523 yards of offense. McDonald rushed for 71 of his team’s 243 rushing yards and scored twice, while Farrell added 65 and a score and Alexander followed with 53 yards and one touchdown. McDonald completed 7-of-16 passes for 166 yards and a score with David Mauro, Alexander and Northam each catching a pair. Collins led the DePauw defense with 12 tackles fol-lowed by Marc Hoeppner with 11 and Sherer with 10. Fitch blocked two kicks and raised his season total to five. Buddy Ferreira paced Colorado College with 14 followed by Saul Levy with 11 and Brendan Ross with 10. Mike Hart and Ferreira each had sacks in the loss with Ross and McDermott recording interceptions and McDermott recovering a fumble.

DePauw 31, Austin 28November 1

SHERMAN, Texas — DePauw scored on its final two first half possession and the first two of the second half on the way to a 31-28 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win at Austin College. DePauw improved to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the SCAC with the victory, while the Kangaroos dropped to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the conference. “I was especially proud of the fight our team displayed today,” head coach Matt Walker said. “We play in a competitive, tough conference and each week is a battle. We fought hard today.” Austin jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first after Scooter Means scored on an 8-yard run with 6:30 left and capping the Kangaroos’ opening drive. Early in the second, DePauw’s Jordan Havercamp was called upon for a 32-yard field goal attempt, but the Tigers were whistled for a false start. Austin’s Matt Finke then blocked Havercamp’s 37-yard attempt. Austin took advantage and drove to the DePauw 1, but Ryan Huffman stopped Andy Braly and Means, on both third and fourth down, respectively. After a pair of Jon Ellis runs netted two yards, Dick tossed a third-down screen pass to Ellis and the freshman streaked down the left sideline before cutting across the field. Alex Koors delivered a block which allowed Ellis to take it in for a 97-yard score. Havercamp’s point-after knotted the score at 7-7 with 4:54 remaining in the half. On the ensuing series, the Kangaroos drove to the Tigers’ 4 before Tyler Doane sacked Braly for a 10-yard loss on third down. Jonathan Hersh’s 31-yard field goal try was wide to the right. Starting from his own 20 and with 1:29 left in the half, Dick completed four of five passes and drove the Tigers to the 3. On third down Dick teamed with Bryan Mulligan for the score which gave DePauw a 13-7 lead with just six seconds left in the half. After the Tigers stopped Austin on the opening drive of the second half, Mulligan returned a punt 45 yards to the Austin 18. Four plays later, Ellis made it 20-7 on a 1-yard run. The hosts quickly responded as Zach Mamot scored on a 49-yard run with 9:29 left in the third, but the Tigers extended the lead to 28-14 on Dick’s 2-yard pass to Mitchell Willsey and a two-point conversion toss to Mulligan with 6:42 remaining in the quarter. Early in the fourth, Austin drove to the DePauw 4, but again the defense kept the hosts out of the end zone on fourth-and-goal with Michael McNelis and Huffman credited with the stop of Matt Burton. Austin closed the gap to 28-21 on Braly’s 17-yard pass to Ed Amerson with 9:32 left which capped a 7-play, 62-yard drive. DePauw, however, put together a 12-play, 46-yard possession over the next 6:41 with Havercamp nailing a 38-yard field goal with 2:44 remaining and push-ing the lead to 31-21. Braly tossed a 5-yard scoring pass to Ross Hasten with 54 seconds left to trim the Tigers’ lead to 31-28, but Steve Valdiserri recovered the onside kick and the Tigers were able to run out the clock. Dick completed 21 of 33 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns. His 321 total offense yards pushed his career total to 5,978 which broke the school record of 5,754 held by Jeff Voris (1986-89). Dick’s 5,982 career passing yards are just 53 shy of Voris’ school-record 6,035. Ellis rushed for 82 yards on 23 carries and caught three passes for 131 yards for 213 all-purpose yards.
