The President and Athletics DirectorUniversity Interim President

Dr. Linda LamwersDirector of Athletics

Dr. Edward M. Matejkovic

Dr. Edward Matejkovic begins his 14th year as the director of athletics at West Chester University.

Under his guidance, West Chester’s athletic program has soared to unprec-edented heights, accomplishing goals never before imagined. The Golden Rams captured fi ve Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) team titles during both the 2006-07 and 2007-08 campaigns. As a result, West Chester has claimed runner-up plaudits in the Dixon Trophy standings and placed a school-best 12th nationally in the U.S. Sports Academy Director’s Cup Division II standings.

In the spring of 2008, West Chester’s women’s lacrosse squad won its second national championship in the last seven seasons, reaching the title game for the fi fth consecutive year. The men’s swimming squad also matched its highest fi nish at the 2008 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving championships with a third-place show-ing.

Scholarship allotments have grown, along with the number of full-time coaching positions across West Chester’s 24 intercollegiate programs. All of these changes have helped the university achieve its unparalleled suc-cess on the fi eld.

Additionally, Matejkovic has helped spearhead a facility upgrade movement at the university that has resulted major upgrades to the newly dedicated Vonnie Gros Field behind Sturzebecker Health Science Center and a brand new state-of-the-art track surface at John A. Farrell Stadium. In conjunction with the new track surface, Farrell Stadium’s football fi eld received a brand new playing surface as the natural grass was replaced with FieldTurf.

Matejkovic’s experience and success as an athletic administrator have earned him involvement in several conference and regional committees. Most recently, he was elected president of the D2 Athletic Director’s As-sociation by his peers. Matejkovic is a past president of the PSAC Executive Committee and continues to serve the PSAC on numerous other committees. He is also a member of the ECAC Board of Directors and the ECAC Finance Committee. He served as president of the ECAC during 2002-03.

An active member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Matejkovic served on the NCAA Student Athlete Reinstatement Committee, the NCAA Division II East Region men’s bas-ketball championship selection committee. He also served on the NCAA Football Task Force – a committee reviewing scholarship allocations in the sport.

The Coatesville, Pa., native earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from WCU, and his doctorate in Sports Administration/Athletic Facility Management from Temple University. Matejkovic joined the staff of SUNY Brockport in 1984 where he fi rst served as an assistant professor and coordinator of the sport management program.

As head football coach from 1986-94, he racked up more wins in a single season, and in a career, than any coach in the school’s history.

In 1990, he was named Brockport’s athletic director and promptly turned the program around in just four years. Along with the successful Golden Eagles football team, Brockport’s wrestling program won a national title and its volleyball team captured four straight SUNYAC crowns.

On September 22, 2001, Matejkovic was inducted into the Brockport Athletics Hall of Fame. In June of 2003, he was selected to the Temple University “Gallery of Success.”

Matejkovic resides in Exton, Pa., with his wife, Debra (WCU ’82). He has two daughters, Jennifer Fitzgerald and Leigh (WCU ’98) Martini and one son, Jude. He is also the proud grandfather of two grandchildren: Max Edward Martini and Audrey Judith Fitzgerald, who were both born in 2008.

Beginning July 1, 2008, Dr. Linda L. Lamwers, West Chester University’s provost and vice president for academic affairs, assumed the duties of interim president. She will serve in that position while the University conducts a search for a new president. Dr. Lamwers came to West Ches-ter University as provost and vice presi-dent for academic affairs in 1995. Her re-sponsibilities have included oversight of an $80 million budget and fi ve colleges (Arts and Sciences, Visual and Perform-

ing Arts, Education, Health Sciences, and Business and Public Affairs), the Honors College, the Offi ce of Graduate Studies and Extended Educa-tion, the University’s library, international studies, admissions, fi nancial aid, the registrar, and student support services. During her tenure at West Chester, she has co-chaired the Univer-sity’s strategic planning process, supported the development of several new academic programs in response to local and regional needs, and fa-cilitated regional and global partnerships with a variety of educational in-stitutions and businesses. As a result of her leadership, the University has also strengthened its academic programs through accreditation initiatives and the assessment of student learning outcomes. In addition, she helped to establish a summer minority teaching program, oversaw expansion of the University’s Frederick Douglass Institute to the other 13 schools in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, and has worked with faculty to enhance teaching, research, service, and outreach. Dr. Lamwers completed her undergraduate studies in psychology at Douglass College and earned her master of science and doctorate in Cognitive and Developmental Psychology from Rutgers University. Her research has been in the areas of cognitive psychology, educational out-comes, pedagogy, planning for diversity, and minority student leadership development. Most recently, she has focused on broad higher education issues. She has published numerous articles and given more than 100 pre-sentations at regional, national, and international professional meetings. On the regional and national level, Dr. Lamwers is a member of the Finance and Development Committee of the American Council on Educa-tion Fellows Board, reviews periodic review reports for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, and serves on the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Tuition Equity Task Force. In the communi-ty, she has long been active in the Chester County March of Dimes and is a founding member of the Chester County Futures Board, which oversees scholarship and academic programs for talented high-risk, low-income high school students.

All-Time Field Hockey Coaching Records

Kathy Krannebitter begins her 24th year as head coach of the Golden Rams. She has led WCU to six Atlantic 10 play-off appearances in the past 11 seasons. In fall of 2006, the senior women’s head coach at West Chester reached a milestone never before achieved in Gold-en Rams history when she won her 200th career game along the sidelines on Sept. 23 at Colgate. The triumph offi cially doubled that of legendary head coach Vonnie Gros. Last season, Krannebitter led her team

to a 6-12 overall record, winning three of their seven conference games. Having improved drastically from the previous year, the team won four more games than they had in 2006. Under Krannebitter’s guidance, the Golden Rams fell just one game short of making it to playoffs, fi nishing fi fth in the Altantic 10 fi nal standings. Krannebitter guided the Golden Rams to the Atlantic 10 title game in 2001 and was named the A-10 coach of the year for the second time in her career that season. In 1998, she led her team to a 4-1 Atlantic 10 record and a share of the regular-season crown. In 1997, Krannebitter was named the Atlantic 10 coach of the year, after leading WCU to a stellar 15-4 mark and a perfect 5-0 Atlantic 10 record. Her Golden Rams claimed the 1997 regu-lar-season championship and were the top seed in the A-10 Tournament, where they fi nished second. Krannebitter’s outstanding coaching performance earned her the 1997 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I Mideast Re-gion coach of the year award. Returning to her alma mater as the head coach in 1985, Krannebit-ter wasted little time re-establishing the Golden Rams’ program at the national level. During her rookie year, Krannebitter’s squad posted a 10-7-3 record, then improved to 17-5 the following season to earn an NCAA Tournament bid. In 1987, Krannebitter guided WCU to a career-best 19-3-1 mark as her Golden Rams climbed as high as fi fth in the Division I ranking. West Chester earned a trip to the NCAAs and promptly shut out Penn State, 2-0, in the preliminary round, before dropping a 2-1 decision to eventual champion Maryland in the quarterfi nals. A year later, West Chester ranked 12th in the nation with an 11-7-2 record.

More recently, Krannebitter was the driving force from the sideline during West Chester’s four-year run in qualifying for the Atlantic 10 tour-nament between 2000-03. The Golden Rams were one of the conference’s more dominant programs from the late 1990s right up past the turn of the century. In 23 years, Krannebitter has earned a 205-222-16 record and in 1994 became the all-time leader in wins at the school after surpassing Gros with a 3-2 win over Rutgers. Krannebitter has guided her charges into two NCAA Tournaments, two ECAC Division I semifi nals and six Atlantic 10 Tournaments during her magnifi cent coaching career. A 1982 graduate of West Chester, Krannebitter was a member of the 1978 AIAW national championship team and the 1982 lacrosse team that fi nished seventh at the AIAW nationals. She served as an assistant fi eld hockey and softball coach at the University of North Carolina for three years before accepting the challenge to rebuild the WCU program. She has also been active in the USFHA Development Camps since 1982 and holds her USA Field Hockey Certifi cation. Following the 1997 season, Krannebitter stepped down as the wom-en’s lacrosse coach at West Chester to focus her attention full-time on the Division I fi eld hockey program. Her career as head lacrosse coach included eight PSAC Championships (1986-87; 1992-97) and one ECAC Division II title (1991). She was named the PSAC coach of the year in 1994 and 1997, and was selected the IWLCA Division II coach of the year in 1987. In 1994, Krannebitter coached the gold medal winning team at the United States Sports Festival in St. Louis, Mo.

Assistant Coach: Julie Lambi West Chester fi eld hockey head coach Kathy Krannebitter announced the hiring of Julie Lambi to her coaching staff in the spring of 2007. Now in her scond year with West Chester, Lambi also spent two previous seasons as an assistant on William & Mary’s fi eld hockey coaching staff serving as that program’s pri-mary recruiting coordinator as well as con-

ducting fi lm exchange arrangements. Previous head coaching experience came while at Dickinson College where Lambi was named an interim head coach of the program while serving a two-year stint as an assistant. Lambi organized game plans and practice itineraries as well as all recruiting efforts at Dickinson. A fi ve-year veteran of coaching, Lambi received her start in the pro-fession at University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) as a volun-teer assistant.

Lambi is a member of the Futures Coach program as well as par-ticipating in the North American Premier League, National Field Hockey Festival and Elite Performance Training Center over the past four years. In addition to her involvement in a plethora of national elite fi eld hockey instruction programs, Lambi has also lent her expertise to a variety of summer fi eld hockey camps stretching up and down the Mid-Atlantic states from Pennsylvania and New Jersey to Maryland. A 2005 graduate of Towson University, Lambi owns the school’s all-time scoring record (111 points) as well as goals scored (44) mark. She was a fi rst team all-league performer as well as fi rst team all-region selec-tion in addition to being named to the second team NFHCA Division I squad after her junior and senior seasons. Lambi was invited to play in the North/South senior all-star game in 2004. Lambi graduated magna cum laude from Towson with a degree in Sport Management and a minor in Business Administration. She was a Colonial Athletic Association scholar-athlete award winner and an NFH-CA Division I Academic All-America squad recipient.

Younger, Hungrier Golden Rams Prep For ’08 West Chester University’s fi eld hockey squad showed tremendous improvement dur-ing the spring as head coach Kathy Krannebitter continues the program’s rebuilding process. As the 2008 season draws near, the Rams expect to be fi erce competitors in the Atlantic 10, after fi nishing in fi fth place a year ago just one game out of a playoff spot. The team showed moments of brilliance with big wins over St. Louis, LaSalle and Rich-mond, ending the Spiders’ 44-game unbeaten streak against A-10 conference foes in the pro-cess. “Missing the conference tournament by one game last season left a bitter taste with the team,” Krannebitter said. “So, we are all look-ing forward to this season with high expecta-tions from each and every player.” Seven seniors, including Marisa Holzman, Desiree Walker, Jackie Eddy, Lauren DuBois, Anna Schleicher, Emily Smith and Brittney Harding lead this otherwise very young roster into the 2008 campaign. Along with bringing a wealth of playing experience to the team, these seniors share vital leadership roles as they look to lead WCU back to the promised land of post-season play. To do that, West Chester must replace its top two scoring leaders from a year ago, both of whom were all-conference picks and among the A-10 leaders in scoring as well. A very talented freshman class with a reputation for burying the ball in the back of the net should mesh with the returning starters to help ease that transition. DuBois, team co-captain, leads the attack with her exceptional instincts for the game and

remarkable ability to create scoring opportuni-ties. DuBois fi nished fourth on the team last sea-son in goal scoring (3) and total points (8). She will head the young attack, which also includes Brittany Cislak, Amanda Wynkoop and Alex Swayze. Swayze is coming off a very impres-sive freshman campaign, placing third on the team in points (5) and goals scored (12). She was named to the Atlantic 10 all-rookie team as a result. Swayze is a threat to any defense and has the ability to create penalty corners and con-vert them into goals with her outstanding stick work. With the loss of Shelly Brooks and Sara Conrad, the Golden Rams are relying heavily on their bench to contribute to the offensive at-tack. Paige Karcher, Taylor Morganti and Erin Colozzi will be providing depth to the forward line. Each is coming off a freshman season in which they saw little playing time. However, their roles will all increase exponentially this fall as Krannebitter and her coaching staff search for offensive productivity up front. Freshman Kate Zunksi, an outstanding goal scorer with a solid high school and club background, heads that rookie class that needs to contribute. Leah Angstadt, a teammate of Zunski’s on her High Styx club team, will be utilized in many roles on the fi eld for the Golden Rams. Angstadt also comes from a solid high school program and is a great playmaker. Kristen Foore, an exceptional athlete from Pennsylvania state runner-up Palmyra, brings her excellent offensive skills to the Rams’ fold. She has the ability to be very dangerous in the circle with her elimination skills and shooting abilities. Another strong striker, who will be looking to compete for signifi cant playing time is Alyssa Gallen. A local product out of Rus-tin High School, Gallen is a dual athlete, who brings athleticism and intensity with her to the forward line unit. Gallen is very dynamic and does whatever it takes to get the ball in her pos-session. The development of this group will have a dramatic impact on how dangerous West Ches-ter University’s attack is in 2008. If the rook-ies develop and perform to their expectations, Krannebitter and her staff feel the Golden Rams offense will be just fi ne. “Maintaining possession, keeping the pres-sure on teams in our attacking end, minimizing our own mistakes and playing with confi dence are the keys towards a successful run in the At-lantic 10 playoffs,” Krannebitter added. Those possessions will be won in the midfi eld and mis-takes can be minimized with the upperclassman leadership that exists in that group. Holzman, team co-captain with DuBois, anchors a strong midfi eld as she comes off a great spring season. Holzman’s intensity level

contributes greatly to her successful, aggressive style of play as she looks to be another strong contributor to the offensive attack. Holzman perfected her skills at the Macabi Games in the spring – an experience that has really aided in her development. Jacki Eddy, another co-captain, will be a key factor in the midfi eld as well. Together, Eddy and Holzman should provide the founda-tion for West Chester to control the middle of the fi eld and orchestrate the game plan. Eddy portrays a very patient, yet persistent presence in the team’s role of solid defense. That is how she complements Holzman out on the fi eld. Other important midfi elders expected to add to the Rams’ dominant midfi eld are Bethany Wong and Donna Doubet. Wong is the backbone of the midfi eld and a two-year returning starter. She is a great defender with the ability to break through any opponents’ defensive scheme. Anna Schleicher will also be competing for playing time this season. Schleicher saw time last year and is expected to contribute more consistently in 2008. Abbie Derr will also be competing for playing time and provides depth in the mid-fi eld. The Rams’ strong defensive unit will be led by senior captain Desiree Walker. She will look to replace one of last year’s starters, Niki Doga-nes, who was named all-conference honorable mention. The Golden Rams should have no prob-lem adjusting to their new playing style. Among key players, who will be contributing greatly to the defense, is Emily Smith, a transfer student from UMBC a year ago, who is the Rams’ only returning starter on defense. She possesses great instincts and stick skills in the back that thwart

Junior Bethany Wong anchors the mid-fi eld for the Golden Rams again in ’08.

Junior goalkeeper Joelle Zarefoss is the backbone of West Chester’s

defense.

many scoring opportunities. Patti Loughlin, an-other very dangerous player with outstanding defensive skills, and Jessica Brown, a solid and confi dent player who possesses strong tackling skills and tough man defense, will be expected to contribute to the Rams’ defensive unit. Goalkeeper Joelle Zarefoss and Brittney Harding lead the backfi eld from the cage, as the two keepers have been extremely important in solidifying the team’s defense. Both keepers possess strong communica-tion skills and have an outstanding work ethic that will help to keep the team together this sea-son. Each saw signifi cant playing time last year, which will make for a very competitive atmo-sphere in goal during the preseason camp. Another up-and-coming goalkeeper is Emily McNiff, who has shown tremendous im-provement and continues to grow in her techni-cal and communication skills. The Rams look to open the season with Lehigh and will face some tough out-of-confer-ence competition, including defending national champion North Carolina, Penn State, Rutgers and Towson. With such a challenging non-conference slate, the team hopes to gain momentum as they face their conference opponents in October. For the third consecutive year, the Von-nie Gros Classic will highlight West Chester University’s 2008 home slate. The 3rd Annual event features a rematch of last year’s national championship game when North Carolina takes on Penn State. Also dotting West Chester’s home sched-ule is Ursinus, who fi nished third nationally in the fi nal Division III polls, in the annual Eleanor Snell game. The West Chester-Ursinus rivalry is

believed to be one of the oldest fi eld hockey ri-valries in the country. The Golden Rams plan on honoring former legendary head coach Vonnie Gros by naming the turf fi eld behind Sturzebecker Health Sci-ence Center before the contest with Ursinus. The ceremony is expected to bring back many of the Golden Rams’ former great fi eld hockey alumni, who will pay homage to their innova-tive mentor in such a fi tting tribute. Vonnie Gros Field will be offi cially dedicated on September 28, 2008. In addition to the fi eld-naming ceremony, West Chester University will also be celebrating its 50th year of women’s sports in intercollegiate athletics. The fi eld hockey program was one of those pioneer sports that went varsity during the 1959-60 campaign.

Kathy Krannebitter enters her 23rd season at the helm of her alma mater. She has 200 career wins to her credit and guided WCU to its 400th career win last season.

Senior Lauren DuBois will be the focal point of West Chester University’s offensive attack in 2008.

Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll

West Chester boasts one of the richest tra-ditions in college fi eld hockey history and that is a tribute to all of the student-athletes and coach-es, who have gone through the university and contributed to the success of the Golden Rams for half a century. West Chester University continues its prog-ress towards a conference championship, which has eluded the traditionally historic program since 1999. A talented freshman recruiting class has the Golden Rams faithful excited about the fall season ahead. If West Chester is to return to the postsea-son, Krannebitter needs to develop those talent-ed freshmen quickly and mold a midfi eld that can create turnovers, generate some offense and still support the defense. Seven seniors will give the otherwise youthful roster a solid foundation on which to build. With a number of one-goal losses a year ago behind them, West Chester University may be on the verge of breaking its playoff drought in 2008.
