Chronic Kidney Disease is

a condition that damages

your kidneys. It de-

creases your kidneys’ abil-

ity to balance your body’s

fluids and important min-

erals in your blood, re-

move waste products

from your blood, remove

drugs and toxins from

your body, and release

hormones into your blood.

The two main cause of

chronic kidney disease

are diabetes and high

blood pressure. Diabetes

occurs when your blood

sugar is too high, causing

damage to many organs

in your body, including

 the kidneys and heart as

well as

blood vessels, eyes and

nerves.

High blood pressure, or

hypertension, occurs

when the pressure of blood against the walls

of your blood vessels

increases. If uncon-

 trolled, or poorly con-

 trolled, high blood pres-

sure can be a lead cause

of chronic kidney dis-

ease, heart attacks and

strokes. Chronic Kidney

Disease can also cause

high blood pressure.

We would like to thank Junie Sivils for being anoutstanding volunteer. He was the emcee at

The National Kidney Foundation of Kentucky

8th annual Kidney Walk. The Walk took place

on September 20, 2008 and was a huge suc-

cess.

Junie is a kidney recipient and received his

kidney from a related living donor in 1993.

From the moment I met him I was able to rec-

ognize his kindred and easy going spirit. He is

always very encouraging to others and has the

ability to transfer his contagious smile to any

audience. He has been a participant in the

U.S. Transplant Games since 1996 and even

took home a gold medal this year in three on

 three Basketball.

The reason Junie participates in the Transplant

Games is because “[I]t gives him a better un-

derstanding about life, that is, we are all the

same”. Thank you for your wonderful attitude

about life and remaining positive throughout

life’s daily struggles.

Jessica participatedin the 2008 U.S. Transplantgames where she competed in:softball toss, bowling and swim-ming. She received the teammanager’s gold medal for sports-manship. For Jessica the gameswere more than a competition tobeat out one’s opponent but an

opportunity to meet new friendsand others who share in under-standing the common strugglesheld by transplant recipients.
