For more than 50 years, the Baltimore Orioles have worked hard to give back to the local community, becoming involved in a variety of area programs and initiatives. Through OriolesREACH, the team seeks opportunities to reach out to our neighbors and help our fans improve their daily lives. In addition to partnering with existing charities and organizations, the Orioles have also established a collection of initiatives under the current ownership group. This book serves as a brief summary of some of the efforts that have taken place during the past year both at Oriole Park and throughout the community.

This Annual Report is dedicated to the memory of Shannon Obaker, the team’s Director of Community Outreach who passed away in 2007 at the age of 29 after a brave fight against cancer. Many of the initiatives covered in this book were spearheaded by Shannon during her time with the Orioles. To further celebrate her life, OriolesREACH recently established Shannon’s Fund to help the families of patients being treated at the University of Maryland Medical Center. To find out more, please see page 35.

OriolesREACH by the Numbers50,000,000 - This season, Oriole Park will become the fastest ballpark in history to welcome its 50 millionth fan.

9,000,000 - The Baltimore Orioles Charitable Foundation and Baltimore Orioles, Inc. have donated more than $9 million to local organizations since 1993.

1,000,000 - The Orioles and owner Peter Angelos donated $1,000,000 to the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation in 2007.

700,000 - The OriolesREACH High Five Fundraising Program has helped local groups raise more than $700,000 since 2005.

200,000 - More than $200,000 was raised at last year’s Brian’s Bash for the University of Maryland Hospital for Children.

40,000 - More than 40,000 children have experienced Oriole Park through the OriolesREACH Gameday Experience Program.

800 - Since 2007, OriolesREACH has partnered with more than 800 different organizations to help our community.

400 - Current and former Orioles players, as well as the Oriole Bird, have made more than 400 appearances this year at community events.

Player and Mascot Appearances

One of the best examples of the Orioles reaching out into the community is when Orioles players themselves appear all over town. Even the Oriole Bird has “flown” to over 200 destinations in the community since the 2007 season. This year, fans have had the opportunity to meet their favorite players including Brian Roberts, Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, Luke Scott, Daniel Cabrera, Kevin Millar and many more at locations throughout Birdland such as the ESPN Zone, Chick-fil-A restaurants, local shopping malls, and many other stops.

Summer Reading Program

OriolesREACH teamed up with the Maryland State Department of Education’s Division of Library Development and Services (MSDE) to launch the statewide Summer Reading Program. Designed to encourage young people to “Catch the

Reading Bug,” the program rewards students who complete a reading log with prizes, including tickets to an Orioles game at Camden Yards. Plus, one student from each library system will be recognized in a pre-game ceremony with Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nancy

Grasmick at Oriole Park before the Orioles vs. Red Sox game on August 19. Last summer, more than 150,000 students participated in the Summer Reading Program. Registration forms and reading logs are available at all Maryland public libraries for students of high school age and under.

Baltimore CityYouth Clinic

The Orioles hosted their annual youth clinic at Carroll Park in Baltimore City with over 300 Baltimore City kids on Saturday, May 31. Freddie Bynum, Luis Hernandez and Ramon Hernandez were joined by Orioles first base coach John Shelby and former Orioles Al

American Red Cross Blood Drives

In June, OriolesREACH teamed up with the University of Maryland

Medical Center and the Baltimore City Fire Department to host the first of a series of American Red Cross Blood Drives. Participants at the June event got the chance to meet several Orioles greats from the 1983 World Championship team and even received an exclusive baseball celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the 1983 season. Plus, everyone who donated blood also received free tickets to an upcoming Orioles game.

Reviving Baseball in Inner City (RBI)

League

Funded by the Baltimore Orioles Charitable Foundation and a grant from the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, the Reviving Baseball in Inner City (RBI) League was founded to help Baltimore City kids build healthy self esteem while learning baseball skills in a fun and safe environment. In addition to sponsoring the summer-long league, the Orioles hosted more than 300 Baltimore City kids for a day of RBI League games at Oriole Park on June 26.

Orioles visit Walter Reed Army Medical Center

The Orioles visited the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC on June 27 before their game in Washington against the Nationals.Led by manager Dave Trembley, the players and coaching staff spent the day meeting wounded soldiers, signing autographs, handing out souvenirs, and thanking those who sacrificed so much for their country.



For the fourth season in a row, Orioles reliever Jamie Walker will donate $200 for each relief appearance and for each strikeout this year to the U.S. Army Emergency Relief Fund – a group dedicated to providing emergency financial assistance to active and retired soldiers and their families, including the spouses and children of soldiers who died while on active duty. In recognition of this unwavering commitment to the community, in 2007 Walker was the Orioles nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, recognizing the player who most exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, and community involvement. Walker also was honored with the Disabled American Veterans Commander Award for his extraordinary dedication to veterans.

Brian’s Baseball Bash

Last August, OriolesREACH and Brian Roberts hosted the second annual Brian’s Baseball Bash, a fundraising event for the University of Maryland Hospital for Children. The special evening for fans at the ESPN Zone in Baltimore included silent and live auctions of sports memorabilia to help the children at UMHC. Through the hard work of Brian and the OriolesREACH team, and the generosity of Orioles fans, more than $200,000 was raised.

This year’s event will take place on Sunday, September 14.

Orioles Celebrate the Holiday Season

Last December, Brian Roberts, Jeremy Guthrie and Jamie Walker led a group of current and former Orioles in hosting area children at the 29th Annual Orioles Children’s Christmas Party at the ESPN Zone in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Playersserved lunch, played games and signed autographs for the kids while the Oriole Bird and Orioles staff members handed out presents.

In addition to actively participating in the holiday party, Roberts, Walker and the OriolesREACH team also partnered with the Baltimore City Police and Fire Departments to present several needy Baltimore area families with gift cards to Wal-Mart and led the families on a special shopping spree for holiday presents and household items.

OriolesREACH Gameday Experience

Program

Each year, the Orioles and OriolesREACH invite more than 10,000 children from disadvantaged areas in the region to experience the magic of Orioles Baseball. By partnering with various local non-profit and youth groups, OriolesREACH is able to provide children with free game tickets, concessions vouchers, an Orioles t-shirt, cap and transportation to and from the game. So far in 2008, several Orioles players have taken part in the program, including Daniel Cabrera, Jeremy Guthrie, Ramon Hernandez, Adam Jones, Adam Loewen, Kevin Millar, Melvin Mora, Dennis Sarfate, George Sherrill and Jamie Walker. More than 40,000 children have experienced Oriole Park through this program since its inception.

Buses for Baseball

On June 17, OriolesREACH hosted Buses for Baseball, a program created to give youth in need an opportunity to attend a Major League Baseball game. The Buses for Baseball program allowed kids battling cancer from the Belanger Federico Foundation – a foundation formed in the memory of former Orioles shortstop Mark Belanger – to visit Oriole Park for a unique evening that included free tickets

and souvenirs, concessions vouchers, transportation to and from the park and a visit with Orioles players including Brian Roberts, Adam Jones, Melvin Mora, Matt Albers, Chad Bradford, Alex Cintron and Garrett Olson.

The Buses for Baseball program is a Major League Baseball Player’s Association initiative and has provided more than 7,000 children the opportunity to watch a Major League Baseball game.

Junior Orioles Dugout Club

The Junior Orioles Dugout Club presented by Chick-fil-A offers an affordable way for kids and their families to enjoy Orioles Baseball and receive exclusive rewards. The Dugout Club serves as a “mini plan for mini fans” ages 6-14, in which kids receive tickets to 10 specially selected games, a hat, membership card, backpack and more for just $17. Family members and friends can also purchase tickets to Dugout Club games for just $6. Again this season, in partnership with Chick-fil-A, OriolesREACH donated $5 for every kit sold at a Chick-fil-A restaurant to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Program Since the program’s inception in 2005, the OriolesREACH High Five Fundraising Program has helped thousands of area non-profit groups, civic organizations, school and youth groups, and more raise more than $700,000. The program is very easy to execute; groups can sell either Orioles tickets or Orioles ticket voucher books in a variety of price ranges and seat locations to their loyal friends and supporters and earn up to $5 for every ticket sold. Special “Super Fundraiser Dates” allow the organizations to earn even more.

Throughout the 2008 season, Orioles fans 55 and over were invited to enjoy special discounts and giveaways during select games at Oriole Park. Giveaways included seat cushions, travel mugs and tote bags.

Orioles FanFest

In 2008, Orioles FanFest was held at Oriole Park for the second consecutive year and attracted more than 10,000 fans for a day long celebration of Orioles Baseball. Fans enjoyed the opportunity to watch the 2008 Orioles take batting and fielding practice, and enjoyed player autograph sessions featuring the entire team, fan forums, interactive games, museum exhibits and a special memorabilia sale that raised more than $30,000 for the Orioles Charitable Foundation.

2008 Opening Day Ceremonies

The OriolesREACH season of giving began in earnest on Opening Day as the team arranged for 80 members of local Boys and Girls Clubs to line the orange carpet holding Orioles flags during player introductions. Participating clubs included The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Franklin Square, Glen Burnie Boys & Girls Club and The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Middle River.

“Take Me Out to the Ballgame” Contest

During the first week of the 2008 season, the Orioles invited all fans to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” the unofficial anthem of baseball, by showing off their vocal skills and team spirit in an open casting call for singers. Ten finalists were chosen by Orioles staff from hundreds of entrants to compete in an online fan vote on orioles.com. The winner, Samantha Ayers of Fredericksburg, VA, led the Oriole Park crowd in singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the 7th inning of the Orioles vs. Nationals game on Sunday, May 18.

CollegeTown Heavy Hitter Program

More than 500 local college students cheered on the O’s at the April 4 game as part of the CollegeTown Heavy Hitter program. CollegeTown, an organization that works to bring Baltimore colleges and universities together, teamed with the Orioles to provide tickets to several Baltimore-area colleges and universities. Students were recognized on the centerfield MASNvision board, and representatives were honored during a pre-game ceremony.

54th Annual Safety Patrol Day

On April 5, OriolesREACH hosted the 54th Annual Safety Patrol Day at Oriole Park. More than 10,000 tickets were distributed to safety patrol students throughout Maryland in appreciation for their service to their schools. In a pre-game ceremony, the Maryland Law Enforcement Officers honored Nicole Epstein, a student at North Chevy Chase Elementary School, for her outstanding performance as a Safety Patrol Officer.

The Orioles and the Greater Baltimore Committee hosted the Annual Lunch with the Orioles on April 3 at the Sheraton Baltimore City Hotel. 20th Annual 5K Home Run and Fun

Walk

OriolesREACH teamed with the Oriole Advocates, a volunteer group who works with the Orioles to help foster a love of baseball and improve the lives of area children, to host the 20th Annual 5K Home Run Fun Run/Walk on April 13 at Oriole Park. Fans had the opportunity to run a 5K around the neighborhoods surrounding Oriole Park, with a finish line on the centerfield warning track. Or fans could elect to participate in a one mile run/walk around Oriole Park. Proceeds each year benefit youth activities in the Baltimore community.

Jackie Robinson Day

The Orioles honored Jackie Robinson, the first African-American player in Major League Baseball, on April 15 as part of Major League Baseball’s celebration of Jackie Robinson Day. Also celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the Jackie Robinson Foundation, OriolesREACH provided 750 tickets and special Jackie Robinson t-shirts to kids from the Baltimore Reviving Baseball in the Inner City (RBI) Program and students from Baltimore City schools including Carver High School, Forest Park High School, Woodlawn High

School, Randallstown High School, City College, North County High School, Digital Harbor High School and Wallbrook High School.

Orioles centerfielder Adam Jones wore Robinson’s #42 during the game and also helped honor Paige Knowles, a junior at Johns Hopkins University, and Sayam Ibrahim, a senior at Georgetown University, in a pre-game ceremony as winners of the Jackie Robinson Scholarship Award. The Jackie Robinson Foundation has given grants to more than 1,200 students from 43 states totaling more than $16 million in scholarships.



Little League Days

Thousands of area Little Leaguers were able to spend a day in the big leagues as the Orioles hosted two Little League Days this season on Sunday, April 20 & Sunday, May 18. The annual events bring local Little League players and coaches to Camden Yards to participate in a pre-game parade on the warning track around the field. In addition, Orioles players line up in the dugout to greet each Little League player as the parade passes by.

Field Trip Day

On Thursday, May 1, thousands of area elementary school students learned about the science of weather during the first-ever Field Trip Day, a fun-filled day of learning and baseball at Oriole Park. Presented by MASN and WJZ, the day provided a unique educational opportunity for students in grades 3-8 to take part in a fun and interactive program about weather. Activities included a morning workshop conducted by WJZ’s First Warning Weather Team that taught students about clouds, lightning, tornadoes and more. Orioles Head Groundskeeper Nicole Sherry discussed how these weather patterns affect the playing field at Camden Yards, as well as the impact on the game itself. The day also featured live weather experiments and a weather balloon launch atop the visitor’s dugout. After the lessons, the kids stayed to cheer on the Orioles against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Girl & Boy Scouts Night

The Orioles hosted more than 1,000 kids and family members from the Girl & Boy Scouts of America at the Orioles vs. Nationals game on Saturday, May 17. Each participating scout received a specially designed Orioles Scout Night badge. Also, the Boy Scouts helped to perform the evening’s color guard ceremony while members of the Girl Scouts sang the national anthem.

Bike to the Ballpark Day

In conjunction with National Bike to Work Day, OriolesREACH and Jeremy Guthrie celebrated Bike to the Ballpark Day on Sunday, May 18. Fans that biked to that day’s game were able to purchase Upper Reserve seats at a discount.

Guthrie’s support of the program stems from his upbringing in the cycling mecca of Oregon. An avid



cyclist, he bikes from his home in the Inner Harbor to Camden Yards for each home game. Guthrie also participated in a ceremony for Bike to Work Day at City Hall with Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon. National Bike to Work Day is a nationally celebrated day that promotes bicycling as healthy and safe option for commuting to work.

Orioles Celebrate Memorial Day

In celebration of Memorial Day, the Orioles hosted several events at Oriole Park in honor of those who proudly serve our country through military service. An official swearing-in ceremony, a special National Anthem performance, and a Color Guard ceremony with members of the USS Carl Vinson all highlighted the day. In addition, the Orioles, in conjunction with Major League Baseball, paused play at 3:00 p.m. to show a video in observance of the National Moment of Remembrance, which honored Americans who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

The Orioles hosted the 27th Annual Brooks Robinson High School All-Star Game of Maryland at Oriole Park on Sunday, June 15 after the Orioles vs. Pirates game. Each All-Star team, Maryland North and Maryland South, was made up of 15 student-athletes, four alternates and three coaches from across the state.

Union Night

More than 18,000 members of the AFL-CIO attended the Orioles vs. Pirates game on Friday, June 13 in a celebration of Union Night. AFL-CIO members from Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia and Pennsylvania attended the game and took part in special pre-game ceremonies.

U.S. Army Birthday

On June 14, the Orioles helped to celebrate the 233rd birthday of the United States Army with special ceremonies and events at

Oriole Park. Reliever Jamie Walker participated in a special cake cutting ceremony with representatives from the Army. Plus, an official swearing in ceremony was also held on the field before the game.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Day

On Father’s Day, the Orioles teamed up with Major League Baseball and the Prostate Cancer Foundation to raise awareness of prostate cancer. Players wore special light blue wristbands and helmet decals during the game. In 2007, Prostate Cancer Awareness Day raised more than $2.6 million for research efforts throughout Major League Baseball.

26th Annual Buddies Night

The Orioles welcomed nearly 2,500 members and supporters of the Police Explorer Scouts Police Athletic League for the 26th Annual Buddies Night at Oriole Park on June 18. Members of the Baltimore Police Youth Choir performed the National Anthem, and the Baltimore Police Department presented the colors prior to the game. This year, $18,000 was raised for local PAL Centers and Explorer Scouts through the Buddies Night program.

Wild Bill Hagy’s Birthday

Celebration

No fan was more symbolic of “Orioles Magic” than William “Wild Bill” Hagy. So to celebrate what would have been Wild Bill’s 69th birthday, the team held a night in his honor. The club dedicated June’s T-shirt Tuesday to Wild Bill by providing the first 10,000 fans attending the Orioles vs. Astros game on June 17 with an orange Orioles shirt with Bill’s name and the number 34… a tribute to the section at Memorial Stadium he made famous with his O-R-I-O-L-E-S cheers. Later this year, Wild Bill will become the first recipient of the Wild Bill Hagy Award, an award given to fans who demonstrate exceptional commitment in supporting the team, making him the first fan ever to be inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame.

Orioles Wives Silent Auctions

Last June, OriolesREACH and the Orioles Wives partnered to conduct silent auctions at Oriole Park to benefit the Family Crisis Center and St. Vincent’s Children’s Center. More than $40,000 was raised for these worthy organizations.

O’s Honor Negro Leagues; Draft Bert Simmons

Prior to the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft on June 5, each MLB club selected a former Negro Leagues player as part of the Special Negro Leagues Draft. The Orioles selected Bert Simmons, a long-time Baltimore resident, who played for the Baltimore Elite Giants in 1950 as a pitcher and outfielder. Simmons is actively involved with the Baltimore-based James Mosher Little League Baseball Association, known as the oldest continuously operating

African-American youth baseball league in the country. Simmons was recognized at Oriole Park on June 19 by throwing out the first pitch and attending the game with players and coaches from the league.

Last September, the Orioles celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Baltimore Black Sox’ 1932 championship season. That year, the Sox never received the proper recognition since their league folded midseason. Current Orioles players and coaches wore 1932 Baltimore Black Sox replica uniforms during the game that were later auctioned off at orioles.com to raise more than $17,000 for the Orioles Charitable Foundation.

Play Sun Smart Campaign

In a partnership with the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), Major League Baseball, and the Players Association, OriolesREACH kicked off the Play Sun Smart Campaign on June 21. Designed to

raise awareness about skin cancer prevention and detection, the program will run throughout the summer. The Orioles will distribute sun safety cards to fans and show sun safety messages on the centerfield MASNvision video board at Oriole Park.

OriolesREACH, in conjunction with the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation and the Taylor Hooton Foundation,

hosted the 2008 National Promoting a Lifetime of Activity for Youth (P.L.A.Y.) Campaign at Oriole Park on June 30. Members of the Junior Orioles Dugout Club spent the day learning about living a more active, healthy lifestyle with fun exercises and question and answer sessions with Jeremy Guthrie and Head Athletic Trainer Richie Bancells. The P.L.A.Y. Campaign was created in 2004 by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society and has conducted more than 35 events in 20 Major League Baseball ballparks.

Latino Night and Cardboard to

Leather Collection

In July of 2007, the Orioles celebrated Latino Night at Oriole Park with a series of special events designed to honor baseball’s rich Latino cultural influences. Several Latino players greeted fans before the game at a party with live music in the Bullpen Picnic Grove.

Fans were also invited to donate new or gently used baseball equipment at the game to underprivileged children as part of the Oriole Advocates’ annual Cardboard to Leather Collection drive. Items were donated to the Sebaco Valley League, a Nicaraguan youth baseball league with more than 500 participants. A silent auction was also held that raised nearly $5,000 for the League.

This season’s Latino Night and Cardboard to Leather Collection presented by Legg Mason will take place on Saturday, July 26 at Oriole Park.

Honoring Cal’s Hall of Fame

Last July, in conjunction with Cal Ripken, Jr.’s induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the Orioles honored Cal’s career by making significant contributions to the charity in his father’s name. The Orioles and owner Peter Angelos pledged a donation of $1 million to the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, and OriolesREACH hosted a silent auction at Oriole Park where fans could also help in contributing to this worthy cause. An additional $29,000 was raised for the Foundation, helping their mission of using baseball and softball themed programs to help teach critical life lessons to disadvantaged young people across the country.

21st Annual Food Drive

Breaks Records

Last August, the 21st Annual Orioles Food Drive was held at Oriole Park to benefit the Maryland Food Bank. OriolesREACH, teaming with the Orioles Wives, Oriole Advocates, MASN and WJZ, collected non-perishable food items and cash donations for the Maryland Food Bank. More than 8,000 pounds of food were collected and distributed to soup kitchens, food pantries and emergency shelters throughout Maryland. A record-breaking cash donation of $30,000 was used to purchase turkeys for underprivileged families in Maryland for Thanksgiving.

This season, the 22nd Annual Food Drive will take place during the Orioles vs. Yankees series August 22-24 at Oriole Park.

This season, corporate partner Kelly & Associates has once again pledged a donation of $2,000 to the University of Maryland Medical System’s R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center for every save recorded by an Orioles pitcher. In 2007, $56,000 was raised to help UMMS save lives.

The Baltimore Orioles Charitable Foundation and the Baltimore Orioles, Inc., support many civic and charitable organizations with the goal of enriching the lives of individuals throughout Birdland. Since the ownership group led by Peter Angelos purchased the team, the Baltimore Orioles have donated more than $9 million to support various organizations in the Orioles’ community.

CareFirst and the Orioles Team Up to

Help Children

Each time an Orioles pitcher records a strikeout in 2008, CareFirst BlueCross/BlueShield will donate $25 to the YMCA of Central Maryland’s Y Healthy Kids Program. In 2007, the YMCA received $25,000 from the partnership.

“Giant” Support for Area Programs

On May 31, Orioles’ corporate partner Giant Foods presented a check to the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University of Medicine for $1 million and a check to the Children’s Cancer Foundation for $500,000. The money was collected through Giant’s Triple Winner Game, a scratch card promotion that gave shoppers the chance to win prizes for donating to fight pediatric cancer.

Last September, Sakrete Concrete and the Orioles presented a check for $8,600 to HomeAid, a leading national non-profit provider of housing for the homeless. Through the Sakrete Diamond Play of the Game program, funds were raised during each Orioles home game to help the homeless in the Baltimore area.

The Orioles and OriolesREACH recently established Shannon’s Fund, a $50,000 endowment at the University of Maryland Medical Center to provide financial assistance to cancer patients and their families. Created in memory of Shannon Obaker – the team’s Director of Community Outreach who bravely fought cancer for over a year before passing away in January 2007 at age 29 – Shannon’s Fund will be administered by the University of Maryland Medical Center. Funds will be donated to cancer patients and their family members as need arises to assist with the general expenses associated with the treatment process, including hospital parking, alternate housing, food costs and household bills.

People who knew Shannon knew of her passion for helping others, especially children and animals. In her role as Community Outreach Director, Shannon coordinated charitable donation requests, scheduled player appearances in the community and arranged special visits for sick children who wanted to meet their baseball heroes. The Orioles and the Obaker family believe that the most meaningful way
