has one of the more unique mascots in the country. Originally nicknamed the Sourdoughs, UAA adopted the Seawolf moniker in 1977.

The name Seawolf represents a mystical sea creature and, according to the legend of the Seawolf, anyone fortunate enough to view it was subject to good luck. The exact nature or shape of the Seawolf, however, was left to the imagination and thus the creature has been depicted in many forms throughout the years. The Seawolf of today was introduced in 1985. Created by the Clark Mishler & Associates Company of Anchorage in cooperation with a University committee, it rep-resents an adaptation of a more traditional Alaska totemic-like characterization of the mythical Seawolf.

“Kristy is going to be a solid all-around-er. We’ll be looking for her to score on every event in every meet,” said Stoklos. “As for Kelsey, we’re looking for her to be a team leader on both vault and floor — she’s very strong on those events. She also has a very high difficulty level on beam.” St. Louis native Maria Puricelli should be one of the Seawolves’ top bars workers and vaulters in her rookie campaign, while Canadian Leah Wilson is still working her way back from injury but should be a factor in the vault lineup. Freshmen Lindsey Mock (Washington) and Rebekah Booth (Louisiana) will both try to crack the Seawolf lineup as walk-ons.

Courtney Williams leads a promis-ing sophomore class, returning with a career-high 38.275 all-around already in the books. Stoklos looks for the Texan to perform especially well on vault and bars. Fellow sophomores Meagan Byrne and Micki Cole make it six total returnees for UAA. Byrne will be a key performer on vault and could break into the lineup on beam as well, while Cole should come back from a tough rookie year to contribute on bars, beam and floor. Stoklos went to five different states and British Columbia for his 2008 fresh-man class, spearheaded by all-arounder Kristy Boswell (New Jersey) and three-event standout Kelsey Fullerton (Texas).

When Paul Stoklos took on the challenge of moving the Alaska Anchorage

gymnastics program to the Division I level five years ago, he knew it would not be an overnight process to get the Seawolves competitive with the sport’s top schools. Now in the dawn of the 2008 season, Stoklos is beginning to see the progress made through the past few seasons, both in UAA’s scores and the recruiting scene. “Last season (0-11, 3rd place at MPSF Championships) was not one we hope to repeat in terms of dual record,” said the 24th-year head coach. “But in the general scheme of things, it was just a wobble. We still built up and had our best performances at the end of the season.” Add a deep and talented six-woman recruiting class, and the Seawolves will be on the prowl for some upsets in 2008. “We have probably the strongest team and the most amount of depth that we’ve had in years,” Stoklos said. “Right now walking into the meet season we have 12 athletes, all healthy and ready to compete. We have pretty good depth on beam and floor, but we’re a little short on bars. I still think we’re going to have the strongest team that we’ve had in the history of the program.” While youth will dominate the ros-ter (six freshmen, three sophomores), the Seawolves will depend heavily on a pair of 4th-year seniors in Jessica Portlock and Lauren Magiera. Portlock, a homegrown talent from Arctic Gymnastics Club and Dimond High, is looking to return to the all-around for the first time since capturing the 2006 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title in 2006. Now fully recovered from the ankle injury she suffered at that year’s West Regional meet, Portlock has been training well lately on all four events. “Jessica is very hungry and intense to have a good senior year,” Stoklos said. “She’s in excellent physical condition. She’s ready to go on vault, bars and floor, and we should have her back in the beam lineup by midseason.” Magiera, meanwhile, has been a steadying force in her three previous sea-sons, posting career-bests of 9.775 on beam, 9.75 on bars and 9.525 on vault. The Chicagoan even competed her first all-arounds last season and earned a second-team All-MPSF nod on bars. Second-year co-captain Brooke Nall is UAA’s lone junior in 2008. The Washington native helped to solidify the lineup last year, earning career-highs of 9.35 on both vault and floor.

records. Stoklos came to UAA in 1985 and proceeded to build a solid and tal-ented team that has had three national champi-ons, 12 All-Americans and 37 Academic All-Americans. Team performance is important to Stoklos, who wants his gym-nasts to think of their routines in terms of an overall team effort. Topping his list of stu-dent-athlete priorities, however, is academics, evidenced by the fact that his team consistently produces All-American Scholar certificates. Prior to coming to UAA, Stoklos served as a gymnastics coach as an undergraduate and grad assistant at the University of Arizona for seven years, helping to bring a fledgling program from ground level to a national ranking in just four years. Stoklos was an excellent athlete in his own right, earning varsity letters in football, track and gymnastics in high school. He was a competitive skydiver at the University of Arizona where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1981 and a master’s degree in exercise science in 1984. An avid and experienced downhill and cross-country skier, Stoklos is a member of the Mt. Alyeska Ski Patrol. He also enjoys hiking, fishing, scuba diving, skydiving and is a rated private airplane pilot. Stoklos lives in Anchorage with his girlfriend, Kim Glover, and their three canine companions, Sam, a terrier mix, and German shepherds Buck and Mora. He is also a member of the Alaska Search and Rescue Dogs.

has ever known, Paul Stoklos keeps taking the Seawolves to new heights as he embarks on his 24th season in 2008. Over the past five seasons, Stoklos has overseen UAA’s transition from Division II to Division I, and boosted

the team’s talent to its highest level ever. In fact, the 20 best team scores in program history have all come since 2004, The 2005 Seawolves set six school records, including dual-meet winning percentage, and produced four USAG All-America certificates as Stoklos captured his second consecutive Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year award. The previous season, the Seawolves won six USAG All-America certificates - including two individual national titles - and broke 16 school

In her 13th season as assistant coach for the Seawolf gymnastics team in

2008, Tami Monette has become an inte-gral part of the program. Monette was voted the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation co-Assistant Coach of the

Year in 2006, repeating the honor she won outright in 2005. Monette has an extensive background in gymnastics as a com-petitor, head coach, compulsory judge and club owner. She has served two stints as head coach for the Anchorage Gymnastics Association, from 1993-95 and from 1978-85. Monette currently serves as an age-group director at the state level. She is USA safety-certified and has served as a judge at levels five through seven. She has placed gymnasts on Region II teams to Nationals from 1985 through 1995.

Former UAA gymnast Melissa Jabaay returns to Coach Paul Stoklos’ staff in 2008 as a student

assistant coach. An accomplished dancer and choreographer, she will concentrate on the finer points with the Seawolves on floor exercise. After competing for the Seawolves in 1999, the Birmingham, Ala., native has pursued a profes-

sional performing career, working as a dancer for three seasons in various productions at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Va., and later becoming the dance supervisor in charge of casting, hiring, teaching and choreography. Jabaay (formerly Morgan) has performed in Australia, New Zealand and Italy as an Alabama Dance Ambassador and danced professionally in the Miss Alabama and Miss America Homecoming Productions. She is currently pursuing a degree from UAA in theatre with a dance emphasis. Jabaay and her husband Aaron have a newborn daughter, Cathryn Elizabeth.

Head athletic trainer Chris Volk is in her 13th season with the UAA Athletic Department.

Volk cares for the treatment and prevention of in-juries to Seawolf student-athletes, and manages the overall operation of the department’s Sport Medicine office. A 1979 graduate of the University of Dayton

with a bachelor’s degree in biology, Volk also earned a master’s degree in biology from UD in 1986. She is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. She and her husband Rick are the parents of three children — Megan (20), Cody (18) and Casey (16).

UAA graduate Nate Sagan is in his ninth year overall and his eighth as the pri-

mary media contact for Seawolf gymnastics. After internships at the University of

California Berkeley and the University of Or-egon, Sagan returned to his alma mater in 1999 and assumed head SID duties three

years later. In addition to serving as the media liaison for UAA’s 11 intercollegiate sports, he is also responsible for the department’s publications and the GoSeawolves.com website. The Kansas City, Mo., native earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism and public communication from UAA in 1997, and he is a 1991 graduate of East Anchorage High School. He and his wife Christine are the parents of two daughters -- Petula (5) and Daphne (2).

The 2007 Seawolf gymnasts finished

with an 0-11 dual record, but showed consistent improve-ment as the year pro-gressed, finishing with a season-high 190.275 score in its regular-season finale. UAA placed third of four teams at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships, top-ping rival Air Force. In just the pro-gram’s fourth sea-son as a full-fledged Division I member, UAA continued to earn national respect with road trips to Illinois State and Utah State, and a pair of home duals against Iowa of the Big Ten.

SEAwOLF FACILITIES

U AA hosts its home meets

on campus in the 1,250-seat Wells Fargo Sports Complex. The gym, which has housed Seawolf gymnastics, bas-ketball and vol-leyball since 1978, provides a comfortable atmosphere for both competitors and fans.

Seawolf gymnasts also make use of the WFSC’s other facilities — weight room, fitness center, 25-meter pool, jog-ging track and sauna — for training and recreation. The Seawolves train off-campus at the Anchorage Gymnastics Association facility in Midtown. UAA gymnastis have exclusive use of the AGA gym for proac-tice. The facility offers 12 competition beams, four sets of uneven bars and two spring floors, as well as a loose foam pit for vaulting, tumbling and bars. The gym includes almost 23,000 square feet of training space.

Senior Rachael Lehmkuhl was UAA’s Team MVP in 2007.

T he 2007-08 season is Steve Cobb’s eighth as the athletic director at the

University of Alaska Anchorage. Dr. Cobb became the school’s sixth AD when his hiring was announced Aug. 22, 2000. In his first seven years at UAA, Dr. Cobb has made a mark on of the Seawolf program with several major projects and continued success in the field of competition. In 2006-07, seven of UAA’s 11 sports qualified teams or individu-als for NCAA Championships play, including a 15th place finish for the Seawolf men’s cross country team at nationals, and NCAA berths in both men’s and women’s basketball. Under his leadership, a planning phase began this year (2007) for the construction of a new on-campus sports facility at UAA, while simultaneously overseeing the installation of a brand new gymna-sium floor and the construction of a new All-American/Academic All-American honors wall at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Two years ago, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. During 2007-08, Seawolf Legacy will surpass the $1 million mark. In 2001, Dr. Cobb was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame. He has also been instrumental in negoti-ating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Nye Frontier Classic hockey and Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champi-ons displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes to become one of the most successful NAIA programs in the nation. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, Georgia Southwestern began plan-ning and received funds to build the Student Success Center, a $22 million facility that now houses the school’s basketball teams and athletic offices. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defen-sive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State.

The University of Alaska Anchorage assumes new leadership in 2007 with Fran Ulmer

taking over as the institution’s chancellor in May. Prior to her appointment as chancellor, Ulmer served as the Director of UAA’s Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER). A former lieutenant governor and state leg-islator, Ulmer brings 30 years of experience of public policy in Alaska. Previously, she was a fellow at the Institute of Politics at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Public Policy at ISER. In the early 1980s, Ulmer was the mayor of Juneau, then a member of the Alaska House of Representatives (1986-94). In 1994, Ulmer became the first female lieutenant governor of Alaska. In that year, she was also appointed to the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission by President Bill Clinton and served on that international board for 11 years, including as chairperson, with representatives from Japan, Russia, Korea, Canada and the United States. Ulmer has participated in numerous panels, task forces, commis-sions and forums as a speaker, moderator and panelist to address the intersection of science, economics, politics and policy. She currently serves on the board of trustees of the National Parks Conservation Association, the Advisory Board of the Union of Concerned Scientists, and the Alaska Nature Conservancy Board. Ulmer earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and economics, and a law degree from the University of Wisconsin.

age home. The city’s boundary is nearly the same size as the state of Delaware. On a global scale, Anchorage is located as far north as Helsinki, Finland and as far west as Honolulu, Hawaii. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city, an international air crossroads and the business center of the state. More than 230 flights arrive daily at Anchorage International Airport. Anchorage is a recreational para-dise, boasting more than 14,000 acres of parkland and nearly 300 miles of paved and wilderness biking, skiing and hiking trails. ter (lows of 20 degrees). Low humidity also contributes to Anchorage’s com-fortable climate. The residents of the city share the Anchorage bowl with more than 1,000 Moose, which are often seen on UAA’s campus throughout the year. In addi-tion, black bears, grizzly bears, foxes, wolves, lynx, wolverines, dall sheep and bald eagles all make their homes here. Salmon fishing is more than a past-time to Anchorage residents. Red and King Salmon can be caught from the many rivers and creeks that run through the city.

est state, Texas. Although Minnesota is called the Land of Lakes, boasting more than 10,000 lakes, Alaska has more than three million lakes. Alaska has 39 different mountain ranges, three of which can be seen from Anchorage. Alaska is home to Mt. McKinley, the highest peak in North America (20,320 feet). Mt. McKinley, located in the heart of Denali National Park and Preserve, is over 200 miles north of Anchorage and can be seen from the city on clear days. Denali National Park is over six million acres and features great wild-life viewing and colorful wilderness expanses.
