Wall Street skidded lower Wednesday after a weaker-than- expected reading on the manufacturing sector and a jump in oil prices to $100 a barrel triggered concerns of a further slow- down in the overall economy. The major indexes each lost more than 1%. It was the blue chip index’s biggest point decline for the first day of trading in a new year. The drop indicated that concerns over the housing slump and tighter credit that weighed on stocks in the second half of 2007 will, for now, persist. The Dow fell 220.86, or 1.67%, to 13,043.96. The blue chips briefly fell below 13,000 for the first time since November. Broader stock indicators also fell sharply. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index slid 21.20, or 1.44%, to 1,447.16, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 42.65, or 1.61%, to 2,609.63. The fine was assessed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration against the automaker, which was divided last year when private equity group Cerberus Capital Management LP acquired an 80.1% stake in Chrysler. DaimlerChrysler paid the Corporate Average Fuel Econ- omy, or CAFE, fine for impor- ted passenger cars from the 2006 model year. Most of the imported vehicles from that year were Mercedes-Benz luxury cars, which are part of Daimler AG. BMW of North America had the previous record, pay- ing nearly $28 million in Octo- ber 2002 for violations related to 2001 model year vehicles. Donna Boland, a Mercedes- Benz USA spokeswoman, said the fine “would accrue to a very large extent to Daimler on the basis of Mercedes” but did not know how much of the fine was covered by the Ger- man automaker. For the 2006 model year, the average fuel efficiency of passenger cars imported by DaimlerChrysler was 24.8 m.p.g., well below the current government requirement of 27.5 m.p.g. for passenger cars. Five other automakers were required to pay CAFE fines in 2007: BMW ($5.1 mil- lion), Porsche Cars North America ($4.6 million), Ma- serati Automobiles of America ($1.4 million), Volkswagen of America ($1 million), and Fer- rari North America ($842,160). GM to slow output General Motors Corp. will slow the line at its SUV assem- bly plant in Janesville, Wis., to produce 44 vehicles per hour, down from 52 vehicles per hour beginning the week of May 10. While a worker at the plant said the slowdown is expected to eliminate 375 jobs starting on March 3, a GM spokesman said the automaker is still discussing the matter with the union and has not determined how many jobs will be affect- ed. Hyundai, Kia sales to rise Hyundai Motor Co. and affiliate Kia Motors Corp., South Korea’s biggest auto- makers, aim to increase sales 21% this year selling new cars and SUVs in China, India and other overseas markets. The automakers expect to sell a combined 4.8 million vehicles globally this year, compared with an estimated 3.97 million for 2007, Seoul- based Hyundai Motor said in a statement Wednesday. Hyundai expects to sell 3.11 million vehicles, a record. Hyundai and Kia plan to release at least five new mod- els, including the Genesis pre- mium sedan and the Mohave SUV, this year to win custom- ers from Toyota Motor Corp. in China and overcome slower growth in the United States. Dura wins loan extension Dura Automotive Systems Inc. has won a one-month extension of loans that are financing its bankruptcy reor- ganization, but said it is looking for a deal that would provide it with financing until the end of June. The Rochester Hills auto- parts company has suffered a series of setbacks recently because of tighter credit con- ditions. The company, which filed for bankruptcy in October 2006, had aimed to complete its Chapter 11 reorganization by the end of 2007. Last month, a confirmation hearing on its reorganization plan was canceled because of the company’s inability to obtain $425 million in loans to finance its exit from bankrupt- cy. Free Press staff and news services AUTO HEADLINES cient. Barring some radical break- through in the way vehicles are powered, Gioia, as other ex- perts, sees a green automotive future where a variety of tech- nologies co-exist and are lay- ered atop one another. From her point of view, that means more of everything fast- er: More hybrid gasoline-elec- tric powertrains. More electric vehicles. More engines that run on ethanol and other biofuels. More diesel. And more incre- mental improvements to the in- ternal combustion engines that run on gasoline. She also expects wide-scale changes to energy use in the long-term that could change the way vehicles interact with the nation’s power grid, poten- tially sharing electricity. “You’ll see more and more product changing to get us ready for 2020,” she said. “The technology is going to be mov- ing faster.” To understand how the ar- ray of varying technologies might grow and work together as part of Ford’s near-, medi- um- and long-term plans, though, Gioia participated in a special project at Ford. The au- tomaker used special modeling tools to map out the company’s plan over time, by balancing en- vironmental needs, customer’s wants and cost. Gioia also wanted to focus on areas where Ford could lead, not just follow the pack, on de- veloping technologies. “We asked, ‘Can we do this?’ Second of all: ‘Is it the right thing to do?’ ” For now, Dearborn-based Ford, which is still trying to bounce back from a record $12.6-billion loss in 2006, is planning a major product launch for one of those new in- cremental engine technologies, starting with the Lincoln MKS. During the Los Angeles auto show in November, Ford CEO Alan Mulally said that the cor- nerstone of Ford’s near-term sustainability plan would be a new generation of fuel-saving, gasoline turbocharged direct- injection engines. The company has said the new family of en- gines would provide customers with fuel savings between 10% and 20% without compromis- ing performance. The new MKS, for example, “will deliver the power and torque of a V8 engine with the fuel efficiency of a V6,” Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice presi- dent in charge of global product development, said in Novem- ber. “The beauty of gasoline di- rect injection is that it enables us to both downsize and boost the power of our engines.” Ford is calling the technolo- gy “GTDI” for now, but given the high volumes that Ford hopes to achieve with it, the au- tomaker likely will brand the technology in an effort to mar- ket its benefits to the public. And Gioia, who is also over- seeing the launch of several hy- brid models, including the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, al- so will lead the charge to make sure the research, develop- ment and deployment of the new technology gets off the ground. From law to engineering Growing up in Livonia, Nan- cy Gioia never set out to be an engineer or to work in the auto- motive industry. As the daughter of two schoolteachers — Dad taught business and math, and Mom taught home economics — Gioia set her sights on becom- ing a lawyer. She was a straight-A student, a Girl Scout through sixth grade and a self-described geek. “Not a car geek,” she ex- plained, “just a regular geek.” The year she was set to graduate from Livonia Steven- son High School, 1978, she got a summer job in advanced engi- neering at Ford. She was work- ing on mass airflow devices. “I said, ‘Wow, this is pretty cool,’ ” she recalled. Gioia already had been ac- cepted into the pre-law pro- gram at the University of Mich- igan at Dearborn, but she de- cided to change her major to engineering, because she could go to law school later. She also decided to focus on electronics, which was undergoing a renais- sance with new computer tech- nology. In the summer of 1980, she worked at Ford again, in the de- sign analysis group, where she investigated and analyzed acci- dents. When it was time to gradu- ate with her degree in electrical engineering, in 1982, Gioia had no intention of going back to Ford. But the automaker was doing exciting work in electron- ics, and Gioia just couldn’t re- sist. Gioia felt then, about elec- tronics, as she does now, about sustainable technologies. “There’s a whole new age coming,” she said. Contact SARAH A. WEBSTER at 313-222-5394 or [email protected]. Wall Street skidded lower Wednesday after a weaker-than-expected reading on the manufacturing sector and a jump in oilprices to $100 a barrel triggered concerns of a further slow-down in the overall economy.

The major indexes each lost more than 1%. It was the bluechip index’s biggest point decline for the first day of trading in anew year. The drop indicated that concerns over the housingslump and tighter credit that weighed on stocks in the secondhalf of 2007 will, for now, persist.

The Dow fell 220.86, or 1.67%, to 13,043.96. The blue chipsbriefly fell below 13,000 for the first time since November.

Broader stock indicators also fell sharply. The Standard &Poor’s 500 index slid 21.20, or 1.44%, to 1,447.16, and the Nasdaqcomposite index fell 42.65, or 1.61%, to 2,609.63.

Ex-DCX pays fuel fineThe former DaimlerChrys-

ler AG paid a record $30.3-million fine in 2007 for vio-lating fuel efficiency require-ments set by the federal gov-ernment.

The fine was assessed bythe National Highway TrafficSafety Administration againstthe automaker, which wasdivided last year when privateequity group Cerberus CapitalManagement LP acquired an80.1% stake in Chrysler.

DaimlerChrysler paid theCorporate Average Fuel Econ-omy, or CAFE, fine for impor-ted passenger cars from the2006 model year. Most of theimported vehicles from thatyear were Mercedes-Benzluxury cars, which are part ofDaimler AG.

BMW of North Americahad the previous record, pay-ing nearly $28 million in Octo-ber 2002 for violations relatedto 2001 model year vehicles.

Donna Boland, a Mercedes-Benz USA spokeswoman, saidthe fine “would accrue to avery large extent to Daimleron the basis of Mercedes” butdid not know how much of thefine was covered by the Ger-man automaker.

For the 2006 model year, the average fuel efficiency ofpassenger cars imported byDaimlerChrysler was 24.8m.p.g., well below the currentgovernment requirement of27.5 m.p.g. for passenger cars.

Five other automakerswere required to pay CAFEfines in 2007: BMW ($5.1 mil-lion), Porsche Cars NorthAmerica ($4.6 million), Ma-serati Automobiles of America($1.4 million), Volkswagen ofAmerica ($1 million), and Fer-rari North America ($842,160).

cient. Barring some radical break-

through in the way vehicles arepowered, Gioia, as other ex-perts, sees a green automotivefuture where a variety of tech-nologies co-exist and are lay-ered atop one another.

From her point of view, thatmeans more of everything fast-er: More hybrid gasoline-elec-tric powertrains. More electricvehicles. More engines that runon ethanol and other biofuels.More diesel. And more incre-mental improvements to the in-ternal combustion engines thatrun on gasoline.

She also expects wide-scalechanges to energy use in thelong-term that could changethe way vehicles interact withthe nation’s power grid, poten-tially sharing electricity.

“You’ll see more and moreproduct changing to get usready for 2020,” she said. “Thetechnology is going to be mov-ing faster.”

To understand how the ar-ray of varying technologiesmight grow and work togetheras part of Ford’s near-, medi-um- and long-term plans, though, Gioia participated in aspecial project at Ford. The au-tomaker used special modelingtools to map out the company’splan over time, by balancing en-vironmental needs, customer’swants and cost.

Gioia also wanted to focus onareas where Ford could lead, not just follow the pack, on de-veloping technologies.

“We asked, ‘Can we do this?’Second of all: ‘Is it the rightthing to do?’ ”

For now, Dearborn-basedFord, which is still trying tobounce back from a record$12.6-billion loss in 2006, isplanning a major productlaunch for one of those new in-

cremental engine technologies, starting with the Lincoln MKS.

During the Los Angeles autoshow in November, Ford CEOAlan Mulally said that the cor-nerstone of Ford’s near-termsustainability plan would be anew generation of fuel-saving,gasoline turbocharged direct-injection engines. The companyhas said the new family of en-gines would provide customerswith fuel savings between 10%and 20% without compromis-ing performance.

The new MKS, for example,“will deliver the power and

torque of a V8 engine with thefuel efficiency of a V6,” DerrickKuzak, Ford’s group vice presi-dent in charge of global productdevelopment, said in Novem-ber. “The beauty of gasoline di-rect injection is that it enablesus to both downsize and boostthe power of our engines.”

Ford is calling the technolo-gy “GTDI” for now, but giventhe high volumes that Fordhopes to achieve with it, the au-tomaker likely will brand thetechnology in an effort to mar-ket its benefits to the public.

And Gioia, who is also over-

seeing the launch of several hy-brid models, including the FordFusion and Mercury Milan, al-so will lead the charge to makesure the research, develop-ment and deployment of thenew technology gets off theground.

From law to engineeringGrowing up in Livonia, Nan-

cy Gioia never set out to be anengineer or to work in the auto-motive industry.

As the daughter of twoschoolteachers — Dad taughtbusiness and math, and Momtaught home economics —Gioia set her sights on becom-ing a lawyer. She was astraight-A student, a GirlScout through sixth grade anda self-described geek.

“Not a car geek,” she ex-plained, “just a regular geek.”

The year she was set tograduate from Livonia Steven-son High School, 1978, she got asummer job in advanced engi-neering at Ford. She was work-ing on mass airflow devices.

“I said, ‘Wow, this is prettycool,’ ” she recalled.

Gioia already had been ac-cepted into the pre-law pro-gram at the University of Mich-igan at Dearborn, but she de-cided to change her major toengineering, because she couldgo to law school later. She alsodecided to focus on electronics, which was undergoing a renais-sance with new computer tech-nology.

In the summer of 1980, sheworked at Ford again, in the de-sign analysis group, where sheinvestigated and analyzed acci-dents.

When it was time to gradu-ate with her degree in electricalengineering, in 1982, Gioia hadno intention of going back toFord. But the automaker wasdoing exciting work in electron-ics, and Gioia just couldn’t re-sist.

Gioia felt then, about elec-tronics, as she does now, aboutsustainable technologies.

“There’s a whole new agecoming,” she said.
