Origin of the Tiger Nickname On March 4, 1918, the

DePauw “D” Athletic Association selected the nickname Tigers from student suggestions in a contest sponsored by the Association.

The final suggestions were Tigers, Yellow De-

mons, Yellow Jackets, Wasps and Fighting Parsons. The school colors of Old Gold and Black had already been established and they wanted to pick something to work with them, thus Tigers.
