wouldbeahugeunderstatement.TheSunDevilsexplodedontothenationalsceneattheNCAAIndoorChampionshipswithathird-placenationalfinish.TheyfollowedthatbywinningtheirfirstPac-10Cham-pionshipbeforeheadingtoSacramento,Calif.,wheretheytiedforfourthplacenationally.Asthe2007seasonsapproaches,expectationsandgoalsarehighfortheSunDevilwomen.

“Weare lookingatmovingupon thenational list,which is a short list,”GregKraft, theprogram’s11th-yearheadcoach,said.“Wereturn29ofour30pointsthatearnedusathird-placefinishattheindoornationalchampionshipslastyearandalsoreturn27ofour37pointsfromtheoutdoormeet.Wehavema-turedandimprovedalotfromlastyear.LosingVictoriaJacksonwillhaveanimpactonusaftershewonanoutdoornationaltitleandaccountedfor18pointsatthePac-10Championships,butalion’sshareofourpointsarebackthisyearandIfeelallofthosewomen,fromthe100meterstothe10,000metersandallnineofthefieldevents,thatwearesignificantlybetterin2007.”

Aftersecuringfourtrophieslastyear(includingafourth-placeshowingatthe2005NCAACrossCoun-tryChampionships),thewomenhavenationalcrownsinsight.

“Wedefinitelyhaveteamgoalsthisyear,butitisacollectiveeffortbyeveryonetakingcareoftheirownbusinessandcontrollingwhattheycancontrol,”Kraftsaid.“Theonlythingtheycancontroliswhattheydo;theirtrainingandresting,etc.,andtheteamgoalswillbetakencareofiftheycontinuetotakecareoftheirownbusiness.”

Withsomuchreturningtalentontherosterandtheadditionofseveralkeycomponents,theSunDevilshaveputthemselvesinapositiontosucceed.

“Ithinkthiswillbeoneofthefirsttimesweentertheseasonwithatargetonourchests,”Kraftsaid.“Inthepast,wehaveplayedthe‘BoiseState-FiestaBowl’chipthatnoonerespectsusandweareunder-ranked.TrackandFieldNewscameoutinDecemberandhadusprojectedinathree-teamracewithSouthCarolinaandTexasA&Mforthenationaltitle,allwithinthreepointsofeach.Itisflatteringtheyarepayingattentiontous,butontheflipside,westillhavetocontinuetotrainandshowupreadytocompeteeachandeverytime.”

Asthefallandearlywintertrainingwindsdownandthecompetitiondatesdrawnear,theSunDevilslookreadytopickupwheretheyleftoffin2006.

“EveryonehasbeentrainingwellthisfallandIamveryexcitedtoseewhatwecandooncecompetitionbegins,”Kraftsaid.“Ilikethematurityofourteam.WhatIlikeaboutourwomen’steamisthatfromNo.1toNo.40,everyathleteiscompetitive.”

THROWSAllpunsaside,thethrowsgrouphascertainlybecomeastrengthforthewomen’sprograminrecent

years,especiallywiththeemergenceofAll-AmericansSarahStevensandJessicaPressley.TheduoearnedfourAll-Americahonorsbetweenthemin2006andwillbecountedupontocontinuetheirsurgestowardthetopofthestandingsagainin2007.

“OneofourstrengthscertainlyisthethrowingeventsandSarahStevensandJessicaPressleyreallydoleadthisgroup,”Kraftsaid.“StevenswasaPac-10ChampionandAll-Americanasared-shirtfreshmanandhasthepotentialtobeafour-timechampionintheshotputandnotmanywomencansaythat.RightbehindherisPressleywho,combinedwithStevens,aregoingtohaveabigimpactonwhatwedoattheconferencelevel,particularlyatthenationalchampionshipsindoors.Itwillbeexcitingtowatchthemcompeteafterthegreatfalloftrainingtheyhad.”

AlthoughStevensandPressleywillbecarrying the loadup front, theprogramhasanother talentednewcomerwaitinginthewings.TaiBattlebringssoliddepthtothethrowsgroupandhasthepotentialtogivetheSunDevilsextrapointsinthechampionships.

“Battle,atransferfromMoorparkCommunityCollege,isrightbehindStevensontheUSJuniorlistinthediscus,”Kraftsaid.“Thediscuslookslikeaneventthatwecouldhavethepotentialtofinish1-2-3andthatisreallyhugeforus,especiallyaswetrytodefendourPac-10title.”

Kraftalsolooksfortwootherwomentoaddpointstotheteamtotalwhilecompetinginthejavelin.“BeckyHolleyhasdoneanicejobandimprovedeachyear,”Kraftsaid.“Wefeelsheisreadytodosome

nicethingsforusontheconferencelevel.JacquelynJohnsonalsohasimprovedinherfieldeventsandwefeelshecouldpotentiallyscoreforusinthejavelinthisyearaswell.”

DISTANCE & MID-DISTANCEAbigkeytotheSunDevils’successfulruntoaconferencechampionshipwastherunningofthedistance

athletes,whoaccountedfor71oftheteam’s154points.“Thisgroupreallygotusgoinglastyearandcameintosavethedaywithagreat5,000mrunshowing,”

Kraftsaid.“Therearefivedistanceeventsandwearealittlethinonthe800mand1,500msideofthings,butthatwilldependonhowwedecidetouseourpersonnel.JessieMcLaughlinandWhitneyLemieuxre-allyneedtostepupandgiveusapresenceinthoseeventsandIfeeltheywilldoso.”

Theywillnotbealoneas the teamcouldalsosendoutJennaKingma, thecrosscountry team’s topfinishermuchofthe2006season.

“Kingmawasascorerforusinthe1,500mlastyearandhasevolvedafterexplodingonthescenesincethen,”Kraftsaid.“Shescoredindoorslastyearandreallyhelpedustoathird-placeteamfinish.Forhertoscoreinthe1,500mandthenruninthe5,000masaredshirtfreshmaninthePac-10Championships,thatisnoeasydoublebyanystretchandKingmashowedsheiscapableofcompetingatahighlevelforus.”

Depthiscertainlynotaconcernofthelongerracesforthisgroup,includingthe3,000msteeplechase,aneventtheSunDevilprogramhasdominatedattheconferencelevel,winningallsixracesrun.Andspeakingofdepth,fivedifferentwomenhavewontheeventforASU.

“ThesteeplechasehasalwaysbeenaneventourwomenhaveexcelledatandwehavethreewomenonourrosterthisyearwhoareformerPac-10championsintheeventinAmyHastings(2004),AnnaMasinelli(2005)andBrookeBennett(2006),”Kraftsaid.“Havingthepotentialtogo1-2tostartthemeet,justaswedidlastyear,andaddinanimprovedCoreyRandall,itisabigdealtoearn20-pluspointstostartandweneedtodothatagainthisyear.”

Anotherbigdeal lastyearwastheSunDevils’presenceinthefinaldistanceeventoftheconferencemeet,the5,000mrun.

DespitelosingtheconferencechampioninVictoriaJacksonat5,000m,theSunDevilsdoreturnthird-placefinisherandindoor5,000mNCAAChampionAmyHastings,alongwithKingma(fifth),Bennett(seventh)andRandall(eighth).Severalofthesewomenalsowillbecountedupontopickupvaluablepointsinthe10,000mrunastheteamlookstorepeataschampions.

“The10,000mwasanotherstrongeventforuslastyearandgoing1-2wasbig,”Kraftsaid.“CassieRiosfinishingfourthtoearnmorepointsfortheteamwashugenotonlyfortheteamrace,butitwasastepping-offpointforherthisfallincrosscountry.LosingJacksoniscertainlyalossforusandwewillhavetodothisbycommittee,buthavingHastingsupfrontandRioscontinuingtoimproveisgreat.WenowjustneedsomeonetostepintoRios’shoesandgetsomepointswemightnothavecountedon.”

SPRINTS, HURDLES & RELAYSThegroupintheprogramthathascontinuedtoimproveandappearsreadytomakesomenoisein2007

isthesprinters,hurdlersandrelays.Althoughthegroupdoesnotpossessthedepthofotherareas,theydohaveseveralkeycomponentsthatwillhelptheteaminitsquestforchampionships.

“Wehaveasimilarsituationtothedistancegroupinthatwearethinintheshortereventslikethe100mand200m,”Kraftsaid.“BridgetteWilliamshadagreatfallandIlookforhertodoubleforusatthePac-10meet;Iamjustnotsurewhattwoeventsthatwillbe.LatoyaImadiyihasreallyimprovedinthe100mand200mthisfallandwelookforhertobreakthroughandscoreinoneoftheeventsthisyear.”

Movingintothelongerevents,the400mdashandthe400mhurdles,thewomenwilllooktocountuponanimprovedLatoshaWallacetopropeltheteamon.

“Inthequartermile,Williamsisvastlyimproved,butWallaceisreallytheheartandsouloftheteam,”Kraftsaid.“Shehadanincredibledoublelastyearinthe400mhurdlesandtheopenquarterbeforerun-ninginthe4x400mrelay.Shewillhavetodothesamethingagainthisyearand,justlikeWilliams,shehasimprovedgreatlythisfall.Bothhadgreatjuniorcollegecareers,havereallyimprovedeverydaytheyhavebeenoncampusandIlookforwardtoseeingthemshineforusin2007.”

Althoughsheisconsideredtheheartandsouloftheteam,Wallacewillhavetwoyoungerathleteswithherasthecoachingstaffhopestoseethemlearnfromtheveteranleader.

“TruefreshmanJasmineChaneycameinundertheradarasamultiplestatechampionandwearehopingshecanbreakthroughtothefinalsinboththe100mand400mhurdleeventsthisyear,”Kraftsaid.“Shaun-telElcockcamelastyearasamid-yearstudentafterastoriedhighschoolcareerinIndiana,buttruthfullycameinoutofshapeanddidnothavetheimpactwewerehopingfor.SheneedstostepupthisyeartoreallyhelpusoverthehumpandIfeelshewill.”

ThesprintgroupalsowillrelyontheskillsofJacquelynJohnson,thethird-placefinisherinthe100mhurdlesatthe2006Pac-10Championships.

“Johnsonwasathird-placefinisherinthe100mhurdleslastyearandisoneofthetopreturninghurdlersintheconference,”Kraftsaid.“Thesuccesssheenjoysinthemulti-eventsreallystartswiththehurdles.SheisagreatcompetitorandIexpectnothinglessofherthantoearnpointsintheeventsagainthisyear.”

JUMPSLastyear,thewomenearnedseveralpointsfromthejumpingevents,includingthelongjumpandthe

highjump.Headingintothe2007season,thecoachesfeelthatwillbethesamethisyearwithmorepointsandtheadditionofpointsfromanotherevent.

“Wearethininthisarea,but,justliketheothereventgroups,goodupfront,”Kraftsaid.“JacquelynJohnsonisaformerPac-10championinthehighjumpandwastherunner-uplastyearfollowingamarathonjump-off.Shealsowassixth-placeinthelongjumpandthatshowsshecandoitall.Wecan’thaveherdoitallforustowinandIfeelthereareseveralwomenreadytostepup.

“StephanieGarnettwasanAll-AmericaninthelongjumpindoorsandaMPSFrunner-upindoors,buttiredalittleoutdoorsandonlyfinishedeighthintheconference,”Kraftsaid.“IknowsheisbetterthanthatfinishandIlookforhertomoveupthestandingsthisseason.”

Severalyearsago,theSunDevilsdidnothaveapolevaulterontheroster.Enteringthe2007campaign,thewomennowboastthreevaultersthatcouldhaveasignificantimpactontheteamraces,bothontheconferenceandnationallevels.

“Inthepolevault,wereturnadeepsquadthatisledbyAprilKubishta,whoseeminglyrecordedpersonalbestclearancesbyacentimetereachweeklastyear,”Kraftsaid.“Shewasinpositiontobeasignificantscorerattheindoornationalmeet,butareallybadillnesshitherthatreallyheldherbackmuchoftherestoftheseason.Forustoreachourgoals,shejustneedstodowhatsheiscapableofandthatisjumpveryhigh.IlikethefalltrainingshehadthisyearandIamexcitedtoseehercompete.SupportingherareCaraWalkerandAlanaWaterford,bothofwhichcouldbefour-meterorbetterjumpers.Iftheydothatattherighttime,theycouldscoresignificantpointsforus.”

MULTI-EVENTSJacquelynJohnsonreturnsforher junioryearandisholderofthreeNCAAtitlesaftersweepingthe

indoorpentathlonandoutdoorheptathlonin2006.Oneofthetopathletesinthenation,JohnsonhashersightssetonrepeatinghernationalsweepaswellasaddingathirdPac-10heptathloncrown.

SUN DEVIL COACHING STAFF“Thewaymymanagementstylehasbeeniswealwayshavebeen

fortunateatArizonaStatetohaveanincrediblecoachingstaff.Lastyear,bothLouieQuintana andDavidDumblewere recognized asUSTFCCCANationalAssistantCoachesoftheYear(women’sdis-tance andwomen’s throws, respectively).When I look at the jobstheyhavedoneandtheothercoachesthatIhaveworkedwiththathavegoneontodogreatthingswithotherprograms,IknowIamveryfortunatewiththestaff Ihavehere.TerryWinstonandDionMillerhavedoneaverygood jobwithour sprinters,hurdlers andrelaysandthequalityofvolunteercoacheswehaveinRonBarelaandDanO’Brienprovidesanoutstandingtrainingenvironmentforourstudent-athletes.WhenIlookatourprogram’spotentialforsuccess,itreallybeginsandendswithourcoachingstaff.WhenIseehowtheyworkandinteractwiththeathletesintheirareas,itgivesmecauseforoptimismontheseasonandthefutureoftheSunDevilprogram.”

SUN DEVIL MENHeadingintothe2007season,theArizonaStateUniversitymen’strackandfieldteamwilllooktorebound

fromadisappointing2006campaignbyrelyingonthestrengthofseveralreturningveteranswhilehopinganinfusionofnewcomers,bothyoungandold,willcreatetherightformulaforsuccess.

“Lastyearwasadisappointingseasonforusonmanydifferentlevels,”Kraftsaid.“IreallyfeelourmenaresomewhatundertheradarthisyearandthatwewillcompeteforaTop3finishintheconferenceandaTop10placementinthenationalrankings.WhatIlikeaboutourteamiswehaveexcellentbalance.Wehaveoutstand-ingsprintersandgreatdistancerunnersandwewillneedsomeguystostepupinthemiddle-distanceeventstoreallypushustowardthetop.CoachQuintanabroughtinanoutstandingdistanceclassthisyearwithfiveveryfinehighschoolathletes,butwewillredshirtthemthisyeartobetterpreparethemfortheyearstocome.”

LeadingthechargefortheSunDevilswillbefour-timeAll-AmericanAaronAguayo,whopacedthecrosscountryteamduringthefallandplacedninthattheNCAAChampionships,thehighestfinishbyaSunDevilmaleintheevent.SprinterDomenikPetersonwillbecountedupontoleadaresurgenceinthespeeddivisionandhelpputtheSunDevilsbackontopofthepodiumintherelays.Anotherveteranthatwillbecountedupontoshowcontinuedimprovementwillbemulti-eventspecialistJoshuaKinnaman.

“Themenhavesomesolidcompetitorsleadingtheway,”Kraftsaid.“Aguayo,PetersonandKinnamanareallverycapableofdoingbigthingsthisyearandIlookforwardtoseeingwhatisonthehorizonforeach.”

Butthattriowillnotbecountedupontoleadthewaycompletelyashighly-heraldedRyanWhitingwillheadintohisfirstcollegiateseasonafterredshirtinglastyearandwillbejoinedinhisfirstseasonbytwosolidtransfersindistanceathleteKyleAlcorn(Oregon)andjump-specialistMattTurner(CSFullerton).

Insimilarfashiontothewomen’steam,depthmayplayafactoronthemen’ssideaswell.“Manyoftheareasofthemen’steammaybealittlethinthisyear,butweareverystrongupfront,”Kraft

said.“Wewillcoverallofourbases.Thekeywillbeseveralindividualssteppingupandpreformingliketheyhaveinthepastandaddtothatthecontributionsoftheyoungerathletes.Ifwecanhaveathletesstepupandrecordthemarkswefeeltheyarecapableof,wewillbeabletoreachourgoals.Likethewomen,weneedtotakecareofourindividualeffortsandourteamgoalswillbeachieved.”

THROWSInrecentyears,themen’sthrowshavecontinuedtoimprovewithDavidDumbleatthehelm.Thisyear

shouldbenodifferentasseveralveteransreturninTomasNavarroandAndrewSmithwhileredshirtfreshmanRyanWhitingandJasonLewisalsojointhegroup.

“Ilikethedepthwehave,butwealsoarestrongupfront,”Kraftsaid.“ThePac-10Conferenceisalwaysthedeepestconferenceinthecountryintermsofthemen’sthrows,sopointswillbetoughtocomeby,butIfeelwehavethetalenttoearnsomepoints.”

OneofthosetalentedthrowersisWhiting,the2005GatoradeNationalHighSchoolAthleteoftheYear.“Ineverliketoover-hypeanathletethathasnotyetwornthemaroonandgold,butRyanWhitingisasgood

ahighschoolathletethatArizonaStateUniversityhaseverrecruited,”Kraftsaid.“Ibelievehewasjustthe12thhighschoolathletetothrow70-feetintheshotputandwasthefirsthighschoolathletein20yearstoberankedinTrackandFieldNewsintheshotputanddiscus.HewasalreadyagoldmedalistatthePan-AmGamesandisagreatcompetitorwhichmakesmeveryeagertowatchhim.”

WhitingwillbejoinedbyclassmateLewisandjuniorTomasNavarro,whohasbeentheleaderofthemen’sthrowersinrecentyears,placingthehighestofthethrowersontheconferencelevel.

“OneofthebiggestsurpriseswehavehadwasthedevelopmentofJasonLewisoverthelastyear,”Kraftsaid.“PartofthatishehasbeenabletotrainwithWhitingandheisanotherathleteweareexcitedtoseecompete.NavarrohasscoredforusinthepastatthePac-10meetandhasneverlookedbetterheadingintotheseason.”

ThejavelinlookstobeanotherstrongareaofthethrowswiththereturnofAndrewSmith,whoranksfifthontheall-timeArizonaStatelists.

“Smithcamebackafteralreadygraduatingandweareveryfortunatehedid,”Kraftsaid.“HeisourbigguyinthejavelinandwillbebackedbyBradRoth,whohasthepotentialtoscore.AnothertolookforasapossiblescorerisJoshuaKinnaman.Hehadsomeinjuryproblemslastyear,buthehasbeentrainingbetterthisfallandisimprovedtowhereIfeelhecouldbeascorerinthejavelinaswell.”

DISTANCE & MID-DISTANCEJustasthewomen’sprogramhashadsuccessinthesteeplechase,themenhaveenjoyedsimilarsuccessviaonerunner:AaronAguayo.Thethree-timedefendingsteeplechasecham-

pioninthePac-10,AguayohasbeenthefaceofSunDevildistancerunninginrecentyearsandwilllooktocloseouthiscareerontoponceagain.“IcouldgoonfordaysaboutwhatAguayohasdoneforthisprogram,”Kraftsaid.“HehaswonthreePac-10steeplechasetitlesandislookingforhisfourththisseasonandiscoming

offagreatfallwherehefinishedninthinthenationatthecrosscountrychampionships,thehighestfinishforanASUmaleintheeventever.Heisaguythathasimprovedeveryyearandhasalwaysbeenincrediblytoughthroughout.HiscompetitivedriveinspiresmeandIknowhehasaneffectontherestoftheteam.”

AguayowillhavetolookoutforfellowteammateKyleAlcorn,atalentedsteeplerinhisownright,whilegoingforhisfourthconferencecrown.“Heisatalentedrunnerandagreatfinisher,soAguayo’stryforfourPac-10titlescouldbechallengedbyAlcorn’stalent,”Kraftsaid.“AlcornwillbeabletofeedoffAguayo’scom-

petitivenessthisyear.Aguayo’ssuccessmightovershadowhimalittle,butIfeelhecanbeagreatsteeplerinhisownrightandshouldprovethatthisyear.”ThetalentofAguayoandAlcornupfrontnotonlyinthesteeplechasebutothereventsaswell,willallowforyoungerathletes,suchassteeplerDavidMehlhornandnumerousrook-

ies,totrainwithsomeofthetoprunnersinthenation.“Whenwelookatthe5,000mrun,AguayoandAlcorncontinuetoleadthatgroup,buttheguythatcontinuestoimproveforusisJoeyHeller,”Kraftsaid.“Heller’sdevelopment

isverycriticalforus,especiallyasIlookdowntheroadwhereIseehimcarryingthemantelforus.Hehadagreatfall,isverycoachableandcontinuestodowhatheneedstodotoimprove.”

DistancerunninginthePac-10,muchlikethethrowingevents,producesaverytoughfieldofcompetitors.Ifthemenhopetoclimbupthefinalstandingsatthe2007Pac-10ChampionshipsinPaloAlto,Calif.,theywillhavetoreceivestrongshowingsfromseveralindividualsintheshortestandlongestdistanceruns.

“Inthe10,000mrun,wehavebeenpushingtogetanypointswecansinceitistoughtodointhePac-10Conference,andwemayneedseveralpeopletostepupandentertheevent,”Kraftsaid.“WhenIlookattheroster,IknowEricDallisaguyforusthatcanstepupandreallyexcelintheevent.

“Inthe1,500mrun,JackMannwillbeourgo-toguyattheconferencelevel,”Kraftsaid.“Itishardtosaywhoelsemightdevelopintohelpinginthisdistance,butIamconfidentinMann’sabilitytoscoreforus.Ifwecangetseveralmentostepintothe1,500mand10,000mandscoresomepoints,thatcouldbethedifferenceinbeingthirdorfourthplace.”

Waitinginthewingsisanimpressivegroupoffreshmen,severalofwhomreceivedtheirfirsttastesofcollegiatecompetitionduringthe2006crosscountryseason.“WehadanoutstandingrecruitclassputtogetherbyCoachQuintanawiththelikesofBenEngelhardt,MikiasGelagle,JeffHelmer,GarrettKellyandPatrickMilloy,”Kraftsaid.

“Althoughtheyaretalentedathletes,wewantthemtodevelopandwillredshirtthemthisseasonandreallybeabletotakethetimetoworkontheircraftforthefutureoftheteam.WefeelthemorepreparedtheyaretocompeteinthePac-10Conference,themoresuccessourprogramwillhaveinthefuture.”

Individually,thetorch-bearerofthegroupisthetalentedPeterson,aversatileathletethathasexcelledinthe100m,200mand400mevents.

WhilePetersonandLoveJr.,havetheexperienceofcompetingattheDivisionIlevelforthreeandtwoyears,respectively,thecoachingstaffisexcitedaboutwhattwonewcomerscanbringtothetablethisyear.

“We also have two guys that really are interesting to me in Gordon and Kremer,” Kraft said. “Gor-doncameinafterflyingundertheradarincommunitycollegeandwasinjuredlastyear.Thewayhehastrainedthisfallandifhecanstayhealthy,IbelievehehastheabilitytobeanotheroneofASU’s44-point400mrunners.

“Kremerhasbeenadelightforusinhisshorttimehere,”Kraftsaid.“HecameherefromGrandCanyonHighSchoolwherehewonthestatetitlesinthe100m,200m,400mandlongjumpand47.91atthatstatemeetwhere52-secondswassecondplace,whichishardtodo.Whatpeopledon’tunderstandaboutKremerishishighschoolteamhadnocompetitionaswellasnothavingatrack.Itwashardtodowhathedid,especiallysincehedidnothaveatracktotrainonandwasbasicallyrunningbyhimself.”

Intheshortsprints,theSunDevilswilllooktoRodneyGlass,whoredshirtedhisfreshmancampaignwiththefootballteamthisfallasarunningback.

“ThewildcardofthisgroupisGlass,whofootballcoachDennisEricksonhasgraciouslyreleasedtousforthespring,”Kraftsaid.“HeisthereigningCaliforniastatechampionat100mandhadthetopmarkinthena-tionamonghighschoolboyslastyearat10.32.Hewillbeabletomakeanimmediateimpactonthisteam.”

Inthehurdles,MarquisProfitwillonceagainbecalledupontocompeteinthe110mand400meventsandcontinuetoimproveashehasdoneeachofthelasttwoyears.

“Lastyear,wesnuckapoint in the400mhurdleswithProfit,”Kraft said. “Hecontinues to improveandwelookforhimtobeaPac-10scorernotonlyintheintermediateevent,butalsointhehighhurdlesaswell.”

BrandonGlenn.GoneisPac-10triplejumpchampionRyanZimmerman,buttheinfusionofredshirtath-letesandthetransferofMattTurnershouldpaydividendsimmediately.

“WereturnanAll-AmericaninBrandonGlenninthepolevaultwhostruggledalittlelastyear,”Kraftsaid.“Hehashitithardthisfallandhasneverlookedbetterheadingintoaseason.Welookforhimtocon-tendforthePac-10titleandearnAll-Americahonorsatthenationalmeets.Hewillbebackedbytwofresh-meninJoeFazioandCoreyPhallen,whowefeelthat,intime,canscoreforusattheconferencelevel.”

TheadditionofTurnerwillgivetheSunDevilsasolidcompetitorinthehigh,longandtriplejumpsthisseason,somethingthecoachingstaffislookingforwardtoatthePac-10Championships.

“Inthehighjump,Turnerbringsapersonalbestof2.20m(7-2.50),”Kraftsaid.“Inmytimehere,wehavenothadadedicatedjumpertothiseventandhavingTurnerisgreatforusthisyearbecausethehighjumpwashithardattheconferencelevellastyearbygraduation.IfeelhecanstepinrightawayandcontendforthePac-10titlethisyear.

“Turneralsohasthetalenttocomebackandchallengeforthetitleinthelongjumpaswell,”Kraftsaid.“Hewas10thattheNCAAOutdoorChampionshipslastyearforCalStateFullertonandhashadanicefall.Healsowillcompeteinthetriplejumpforus,sowefeelstronglythathewillbeasolidcontributorfromdayone.”

TurnerwillhavehelpinthejumpsintheformoffreshmenKyleAndersonandJeremyEgborowhileJoshuaKinnamancouldalsoplayaroleinthelongjump.

“AndersonwontheindoorNikechampionshipslastyearandisaveryrawtalent,butisverycoachableandhasbeenapleasuretoworkwith,”Kraftsaid.“Inthetriplejump,Egborowillalsocompeteandwelookforbothathletestohelptheprogrambycontinuingtoimprove.”

MULTI-EVENTSInhistwoyearsofcompetingfortheSunDevils,JoshuaKinnamanhascontinuedtoimproveinthe

heptathlonanddecathlon,includingearningAll-Americaaccoladesinbotheventslastyear.Thetwo-timePac-10runner-upinthedecathlon,Kinnamanwillbelookedtoasagreatstartingpointfortheteam’shopesattheconferencelevelasthedecathlonisheldoneweekpriortothePac-10meet.

“KinnamanwasourmostdecoratedathletelastyearafterearningAll-AmericahonorsinthedecathlonandplacingsecondatthePac-10Championships,”Kraftsaid.“HehasreallydevelopednicelyunderthetutelageofOlympicChampionDanO’Brien.Hehasmaturednicelyoverhistimehereandheisincrediblygiftedasanathlete.Hehasdoneagreatjobforusanditwouldnotsurprisemeifhemadesomebignoisethisyear.”

On the strength of two individual national titles, the women’steam scored 30 total points to earn their first track trophy andthesecondNCAAtrophyoftheseasonfortheprogramfollowingthemeet inFayetteville,Ark.Afterplacingsecondasa freshmanin 2004, Jacquelyn Johnson won her second NCAA crown, thistimecapturingthepentathlon(4,287points)toscore10pointforthe team. Shewas followedbyAmyHastings,whowonherfirstNCAAcrownbytakingthe5,000mrun(15:51.63)toadd10morepointstothetill.Theteamearneditsremaining10pointswithsixfrom Sarah Stevens (17.91m), who finished third in the shot putwithherschool-recordtoss;threepointscamefromJennaKingma,whotooksixthinthe3,000mrun(9:16.13),withthefinalpointcoming fromVictoria Jackson’seighth-placefinish in the5,000mrun(16:14.90).

One month removed from winning their first Pac-10 teamtitle,thewomenonceagainturnedinastrongshowingonthenational level to garner their third team trophy of the year,tying for fourth-place with Nebraska as both teams scored 37points.A two-titlepeformance again led theway as JacquelynJohnson won her second NCAA heptathlon crown and thirdnationalmulti-eventtitleinarow,thistimewith5,939points,whileVictoriaJacksoncruisedtoavictoryinthe10,000mrunin a school-record 32:54.72. The indoor 5,000m champion,AmyHastings,placedfourth inthe10,000mevent(33:41.18)whileSarahStevensplacedfourthintheshotput(17.09m)forhersecondAll-Americahonoroftheyear.ThefinalsevenpointscamefromJessicaPressley,whoplacedfourthfifthinthediscus(53.64m)andsixthintheshotput(16.59m).
