THIMUN 2007 Deals With Poverty www.munity-online.net Monday, 22 January 2007 Volume 15, Pre-Conference Issue Year after year, the primary objective of the THIMUN foundation remains clear and unchanged, and that is to provide an organized forum in which the leaders of tomorrow may debate the topics being discussed by the leaders of today. Seeing that most of these ‘hot-button’ issues are subject to change, every year, the THIMUN Board of Directors selects one of particular interest to be the central theme of the conference. This theme represents a current global struggle, and is chosen based on its overall international relevance and influence. Hence, no matter what the topic, it is normally one that works in tandem with many of the issues debated in the individual committees. To set the tone for this year’s conference the Board has chosen the theme of “Eradication of extreme poverty and hunger.” They have chosen to keep using the Millennium Development Goals as a basis for the conference themes, a pattern started in THIMUN 2006 with the theme “Promotion of gender equality.” THIMUN 2007 Secretary General Thomas Hälsig believes that this pattern will most likely continue in future conferences. “As for the last two years the THIMUN themes are similar to some of the MDGs, and as far as I have information they will continue this pattern, since the MDGs resemble most of the world problems in short definition and achievements.” Though the annual theme may be considered by many to be the heart of the conference, some delegates may find themselves more involved with it than others. Such delegates may include those in the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and Special Conference, committees whose themes are centered primarily on the same MDGs. Delegates from other committees will not be left totally isolated from the conference theme, although they may debate it in less detail. Various other activities have undoubtedly been in the works to get the average delegate more involved with this year’s theme. More information about such activities will be announced as the conference unfolds. The conference theme itself means nothing delegates understand and appreciate its significance. So what do students really think about this year’s theme? “I believe that this is an excellent theme considering the current situation in Africa and other lesser developed nations and around the world,” says delegate Mathias Gelb of the International School of Panama. “There are a lot of problems in this world; however none are as devastating as poverty and hunger, and one of the best ways to attack them is through awareness.” Hälsig shares a similar view, stating that, “this year’s theme is the strongest we have had so far, since it clearly affects so many people and is a solution for so many world issues.” Only time will tell what affect this year’s theme has on THIMUN 2007 and how it might make this conference different from previous years; but with expectations running high, the prospects look promising.
