INTRODUCTIONWhat exactly is modular fixturing? In many ways modular fixturing isjust like permanent fixturing, except for a few key differences. First, modular fixtures can be assembled entirely from reusable off-the-shelfcomponents, without machining. Next, many modular components areadjustable and universal. Finally, specially designed tooling plates andblocks, with a standard grid pattern, are the foundation of a good mod-ular system.
A VALUABLE TOOL FOR EVERYMACHINE SHOP:Most metal-machining manufacturers have good applications for tem-porary fixturing every day! The leadtime and expense required to builda permanent fixture are often difficult to justify. This is especially truewhen production runs are small and do not repeat on a regular basis.General-purpose workholders — such as vises, chucks, and tablemounted clamps — can be ready for production on short notice, butthey are primarily suited for short runs of basic parts. Fortunately, there is now another alternative: modular fixturing. When a companyadds modular fixturing to its options, even job-shop-type productioncan benefit from quality fixturing.
GOOD APPLICATIONS FOR MODULARFIXTURING:Modular fixturing is an ideal answer to many workholding problems.One-time jobs, found especially in job shops, are ideal for modular fix-turing; with modular fixturing, a workholder can be economically builteven for a one-part run. Jobs that do not repeat on a regular basis arewell suited to modular fixturing; modular fixturing permits rapid setupof short-notice production runs. Modular fixturing is also ideal for pro-totype parts; since prototypes are often changed or redesigned, thecost of building a permanent fixture for each new variation would beprohibitive. Replacement parts are another perfect application; modu-lar fixturing allows a company to respond to orders as they arereceived, instead of shipping parts from an inventory. Trial fixturing isalso an excellent application; modular workholders allow a designer tofine tune tooling ideas before a final production workholder is built. Finally, modular fixturing is valuable while permanent fixtures are builtor repaired.
THE WIDEST SELECTION OF TOOLINGPLATES & BLOCKS:Tooling plates and blocks are the main structural elements of anymodular-fixturing system. The type, style, and number of plates andblocks available determine the variety of fixtures that can be built, andalso the number of machine tools that can be used. The Carr Lanemodular system has the largest selection of tooling plates and blocksavailable anywhere.
GRID HOLES VS. EARLIER T-SLOT SYSTEMS:The two primary forms of modular systems available today are thosewith grid-pattern holes and earlier types with T slots to mount compo-nents. Grid holes offer many advantages over T slots. Modular sys-tems with grid holes have greater positional accuracy and strengththan those with T slots. T-slot systems permit movement along theslot, so nothing but friction holds components in place. Wherever Tslots cross each other, a weak point exists.
MULTIPURPOSE GRID HOLES OFFERMAXIMUM FLEXIBILITY:Grid-pattern modular-fixturing systems come in two styles: those withalternating dowel holes and tapped holes and those with multipurposeholes. The alternating-hole style does not offer as many advantagesas the Carr Lane multipurpose-hole style. Multipurpose holes haveboth an alignment bushing and threaded insert in the same hole. Thisarrangement permits each hole to serve as an alignment hole, mount-ing hole, or both. Multipurpose holes are laid out in a standard 1" or 2"grid pattern (depending on the size) to allow the maximum number ofmounting locations.
POWER WORKHOLDING CAPABILITY:The ability to use hydraulic power workholding is another considera-tion in the selection of a modular-workholding system. A modular sys-tem should treat power workholding as an integral part of the completefixturing plan. Instead of requiring special power components, a goodmodular system uses standard, off-the-shelf power workholding com-ponents. Adapting standard power components to modular workhold-ers both reduces cost and expands design options. SWIFTSUREpower clamps and work supports are the finest available, and workhand-in-hand with the Carr Lane modular system. Also, our HILMAprecision hydraulic vises work perfectly with modular tooling platesand blocks.
CHOICE OF THREE SYSTEM SIZES:A good modular fixturing system needs to accommodate a wide rangeof workpiece sizes. Only Carr Lane offers a full line of modular compo-nents in three system sizes. As a comparison to choose the propersystem size, the table below shows typical clamping force exerted byclamp straps in each size (2-to-1 lever ratio).

MULTIPURPOSE HOLES
Mini
Standard
Heavy
Every multipurpose hole on a tooling plate or block has a precision alignment bushing on top, with a threaded insert below it. Multipurposeholes will accept Locating Screws, socket-head cap screws, studs, and many other threaded components. The proper mounting screw foreach component is listed in its table of dimensions. Locating screws are used to locate and fasten at the same time. Note: mini-size systemsuse a Locating Bushing together with a socket-head cap screw for extra strength, instead of a Locating Screw.

GRID ADDRESS SYSTEM
Mini Standard Heavy
The grid pattern of multipurpose holes on every tooling plateand tooling block face is labelled with letters in one directionand numbers in the perpendicular direction. Tooling-blockfaces are numbered (counterclockwise) with Roman numer-als. This allows recording the mounting-hole location ofeach component (e.g., A2, B3, D7, etc.) as part of perma-nent documentation. See the bill-of-material sheet on page9 as a sample.
Multipurpose holes are spaced within ±.0008 inches of trueposition on all tooling plates and blocks. The mini system iseven more accurate, with all holes spaced within ±.0004inches.
CUSTOM TOOLING PLATES
To build your own custom tooling plates with multipurpose mounting holes, we offerprecision bushings and threaded inserts separately. See hole locations and toler-ances above (holes must be jig bored), and page 4 for proper counterbore depth toinstall bushings. The threaded insert’s locking keys can be driven down by thebushing as it is pressed into the tooling plate.

MOUNTING TOOLING PLATES ON T-SLOTTED TABLES
Standard and HeavyStandard and heavy Rectangular Tooling Plates areaccurately located on T-slotted tables using twoLocating Keys (page 166 of tooling-component catalogsection) in the center table slot. These plates are fas-tened to the machine table using four or six socket-head cap screws (page 32) and T Nuts (page 199 oftooling-component catalog section). Swivel Hoist Ringsare recommended for lifting large tooling plates (page32 of tooling-component catalog section).
Mini OnlyMini-size Rectangular Tooling Plates are accuratelylocated on T-slotted tables using two Sure-Lock FixtureKeys (page 165 of tooling-component catalog section)in the center table slot. These plates are normally fas-tened to the machine table using two or three socket-head cap screws (page 32) and T Nuts (page 199 oftooling-component catalog section). Alternatively, fourForged Adjustable Clamps (page 219 of tooling-component catalog section) can be used for greaterholding force.
Mini, Standard, and HeavyAll Rectangular Tooling Plates can be mounted asquick-change fixture plates on a subplate, as well asdirectly on a T-slotted machine table. Instead of theLocating Keys and Sure-Lock Fixture Keys used abovefor two-axis location, Subplate Locating Keys (page166 of tooling-component catalog section) are used forthree-axis location. A round key and a diamond(relieved) key are used together for precise locationwithout binding. The subplate hole pattern shown hereallows mounting any size and combination of standardor heavy Rectangular Tooling Plates, either lengthwiseor widthwise.

MOUNTING TOOLING PLATES & BLOCKS ON PALLETS
JIS MountingJIS-type mounting is the most-common way to mounttooling plates and blocks on a machining-center pallet. Here the plate or block is located from two preciselyground reference edges at 90° to each other. The plateor block is pulled against the pallet's edge locatorsusing three socket-head cap screws (page 32) andalso fastened down with four to eight socket-head capscrews, depending on the size. Swivel Hoist Rings arerecommended for lifting tooling blocks and large toolingplates (page 32 of tooling-component catalog section).
DIN MountingMost of our modular tooling plates and blocks alsoincorporate DIN-mounting capability. Here the plate orblock is located using a center hole, and oriented usinga radial hole. Two Pallet Fixture Keys, a center pin anda radial pin, are required (page 167 of tooling-component catalog section). The plate or block is fas-tened down with four to eight socket-head cap screws, depending on the size.
