Dear friends,

Last May, the Pioneer’s baseball team participated in the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado. My wife and I were able to attend several of the games and proudly cheered for our team as they competed against public com-munity colleges with enrollments exceed-ing 2,500 students. We shared the joys of victories and bemoaned the agony of defeat. I am proud to report that our team finished third in the nation, losing twice to the World Series Champions, but handing them their only loss during the Series. I am very proud of the way that the student-athletes, coaches, and support staff represented our College during this exciting week.

Without exception, every team at Spartanburg Methodist College in 2006-2007 demonstrated a strong desire to win. Each team celebrated their victories and learned from the defeats in ways that proudly represent our College. In the spirit of a wise saying, “good is the enemy of greatness,” our student-ath-letes and coaches gave their very best to rise above “good” in their pursuit of greatness.

At Spartanburg Methodist College, student-athletes are expected to be role models for others, demon-strating good sportsmanship at all times. Without exception, our student-athletes pursue excellence in the classroom with the same intensity they do when competing in their respective sports.

I congratulate all of our coaches and support staff for their successful seasons, for their commitment to their student-athletes, for their devotion to their respective sports, and for ensuring that the women and men they coach understand the value that athletics plays in the grand scheme of life. As we engage in athletic contests during the current academic year, we stand behind our student-athletes and coaches expecting another successful year in our intercollegiate athletic program.

I “tip my hat” to everyone associated with the Spartanburg Methodist College intercollegiate athletic pro-gram. You make us proud to be a Pioneer!

Sincerely,

Charles Teague

Making a Difference in Just Two Years The first two years after high school graduation are times of self-exploration and exciting discovery. For most of us, the decisions during those two years are crucial ones guiding the rest of our lives. Who am I? What do I want to do with my life? What do I want to study? SMC provides a great place to make those two years count. For nearly a century, we've helped thousands answer those crucial questions and make life-chang-ing discoveries.

Tools to Discover SMC offers a full liberal arts academic curriculum. Instead of huge lecture halls where classes are taught by graduate assistants, SMC offers a student-faculty ratio of about 21-1. Our students and faculty get to know one another.

Discover the Leader in Yourself You don't have to wait until your junior or senior year to become a team captain, editor of the school newspaper, or leader of a student organization. Your two-year experience puts you on the fast track, allowing you to become leaders without competition from juniors and seniors.

Dicover the joy of service There's a lot to discover about yourself and your world. SMC gives you the place and the time to do so. Our students reach out to others in the community through a variety of ser-vice learning opportunities. Others benefit, and so do you.

More than 90 percent of our graduates transfer to other insti-tutions of higher learning. Hopefully they are better-prepared because they took time to make some important discoveries in their freshman and sophomore years at Spartanburg Methodist College.

Why Spartanburg Methodist College? Because the first two years of college are the most impor-tant years in college.

FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Welcome to Spartanburg Methodist College, home of the Pioneers! Spartanburg Methodist College has a strong history of excellence in athletics. SMC has approxi-mately 190 student athletes that compete on 14 athletic teams as well as Cheer and

Dance Squads. The SMC coaching staff is experienced and dedicated to their students and their sport, leading our teams to excellence in all areas.

SMC competes at the Division I level of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). As a two-year institution, SMC athletes have the opportunity to be leaders as soon as they arrive on campus both in the playing arena, around campus and in our community. SMC athletic teams have won National, District, and Regional Championships in recent years allowing SMC athletes to gain valuable competitive and life experiences.

Many of SMC’s student athletes have continued their athletic participation and education at four-year colleges and universities and have also gone on to compete professionally in Baseball, Basketball, Soccer and Softball. SMC athletes are also committed to the Spartanburg commu-nity, which is demonstrated in the thousands of service and volunteer hours they log each year with area schools and organi-zations.

As the only two-year, private residential college in South Carolina, SMC offers a unique opportunity for students to excel in academics and athletics. SMC’s focus is excellence in both areas: athletics and academics, to prepare our stu-dent athletes to move on to their junior and senior years at four-year institu-tions.

Our motto for 2007-08 is “Wholehearted”. SMC strives for excellence for it’s student athletes and it is our goal this year to have a “Wholehearted” atti-tude with academics, athletics, and life.

On the playing field or in preparation for a career, SMC is dedicated to the success of it students!

are actively playing and pursu-ing a shot at the Major Leagues.

In 2002, Coach Wallace had his first player reach the majors, 1998 graduate Orlando Hudson, with the Arizona Diamondbacks. A sec-ond Pioneer under Wallace, Lee Gronkiewicz, made an appearance at the big league level in 2007.

Also during the Wallace era, players have signed letters of intent with or gone to play at major NCAA Division I institutions such as South Carolina, Clemson, North Carolina State, College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina and Tennessee (just to name a few). Numerous others continued their careers at the NCAA Division II level.

Prior to his coaching career, Wallace was a standout player himself. A former second round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals, he played professionally for seven years. This included a two-year stint in Italy, where he led the league in hitting and homeruns.

While playing in the States,

Matt Williams, a former Pioneer left hand pitcher, returns for his third year as Assistant Coach. Williams also pitched for the Mid Missouri Mavericks. Since then, he has been Pitching Coach under Wallace for the American Legion Post 28, as well as having coached the team one year. Williams has also assisted in youth baseball camps at SMC during the summer and has been giving private pitching lessons.

As a Pioneer, Williams threw a no-hitter in the 2003 Region X

Wallace was named an All-Star for both the Appalachian and Florida State leagues and also was team MVP for the 1983 St. Petersburg Cardinals. This contin-ued a streak of team MVP awards that included two Lancaster High School, one Post 31 American Legion, one Baptist College and two Wofford College seasons.

It was at Wofford where Wallace attracted professional scouts. During his two seasons there he posted records for career bat-ting average (.456) and longest consecutive game hitting streak (37). He also led NAIA District 6 and the state of South Carolina in hitting as a sophomore. For his efforts, Wallace was inducted into

Coach

RALPH PATINRalph Patin enters his second year

as head coach of the SMC Women’s Basketball team in the 2007-2008 season.

For Patin, whose father coached basketball and football in his native Louisiana, coaching is a natural pro-gression. Patin’s father was also his high school coach at Lutcher High School in Lutcher, La.

Most recently Patin coached the Varsity Girl’s Basketball Team at Ridgeview High School in Columbia. Before that, he coached at C.A. Johnson Preparatory Academy and coached and played while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. Patin credits his father as being influential in his decision to become a coach.

Patin attended college at Jackson State in Jackson, Miss. He is mar-ried to Nalinee Patin, and they have two children: a son, Jamal, 14, and a daughter, Jasmine, 9.

“I’m a disciplinary kind of guy,” says Patin, who wants to lead the Lady Pioneers to a winning season, but also wants his players to be just as successful academically. “I would like to see a consistent graduation rate,” Patin says of his players.

JIM GREENEJim Greene says he was once told

that people should pursue their pas-sions.

He started that quest at age 8 when he first picked up a tennis racquet. After receiving two formal lessons as a child, he taught himself the rest of the way.

While in high school, he lettered on the Greer Yellowjackets’ tennis, foot-ball, and soccer teams. But tennis had proven to be his true passion.

Greene is a Greer, SC native who spent six years in the Navy as a Intelligence Specialist attended North Greenville College, and the University of Hawaii. He was on the tennis team at both schools.

The 2007 – 2008 season is Greene’s fifth at Spartanburg Methodist College. Prior to that, he served as Pro at the Westside Club in Spartanburg.

When he became Head Tennis Coach at SMC, the men’s program had just completed its first year. The women’s had been off the ground and running since the early 1990s, claiming Region X championships in 1994 and 1995.

Greene has grown to love teaching

the sport he embraces with vigor to new students each year. He sees his role as coach to be one which helps his athletes gain a further apprecia-tion for the sport and stresses that process is more important than out-come. He hopes that his athletes’ experiences at SMC opens new doors for them in the future, both on and off the court.

He says that a highlight of watching his players grow their skills is when they have a moment of epiphany when they do something or real-ize something that they never have before and have reached a new milestone.

But most important to Greene is serving as a mentor to his players and students, and helping provide additional support structure for them as their academic and athletic skills mature.

Greene has also been provid-ing professional tennis instruction for the past 11 years at various clubs throughout the Greenville-Spartanburg area. He maintains a professional teaching status with the United States Professional Tennis Registry (USPTR) and has been a member since 1995.

Greene’s goals for the 2007-2008 Pioneers Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams are to win 60 percent of their respective matches and advance to the NJCAA Tennis championships.

His 2006-2007 men’s team had one player named an Academic All American, who also advanced to Nationals. The team had four ranked in the Top 100 of men’s singles and two doubles teams in the Top 100.

Greene currently lives in Landrum with his wife Rhett and their sons Jay, 24, Jonathan, 14, and Alex, 10.

Spartanburg Methodist College’s athletic director Mark Perdue and his wife spent 10 days in spring 2007 participating in a mission to West Africa, helping educate and minister to local families.

The mission to the village of Cewo in Senegal was sponsored by the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention

The Perdues participated in a teaching of Rick Warren’s, “The Purpose Driven Life”, to adults and also taught bible lessons to the children of Cewo.

While visiting Cewo, the Perdues also presented the men’s soccer teams of the Cewo and Popenguine villages with Spartanburg Methodist College athletic jerseys. Soccer is the national game and is played widely throughout Africa. In honor of the Perdue’s, the villages of Cewo and Popenguine played an exhibition game wearing the SMC Soccer jerseys. Cewo won the match 3-1.

The Spartanburg Methodist College baseball team spent a day-this past spring visiting Jesse S. Bobo Elementary School, as part of National Sportsmanship Day, to meet students and talk with them about good sportsmanship.

The team spent the morning of March 9 meeting and talking with students at the school, participating in activities with them, and signing autographs.

Coach Tim Wallace told students that “you need to be respectful of everyone, on and off the field. There are always little things you can do that show that you are a good sport.”

He encouraged students not to quit, not to make up excuses, not to brag when they win, not to pout when they lose, not to cheat, have respect for their opponent, not to underestimate others, and not to overestimate themselves.

The 2007 National Sportsmanship Day, organized by the Institute for International Sports, was celebrated by colleges and schools nationwide the entire week of March 6. The event focuses on stressing good sportsmanship and ethics among all levels of sport-ing activities.
